Oh Dear.....What has happened to The Boot? On my first visit for some time it is now apparent that the "chav" element are encouraged along with a lot of gratuitous bad language and indifferent service. Coupled with Ringwood tampering with Thumper I now see why so many regulars have decamped to the Globe!

Cracking pint of Funky Monkey.........but Oh Dear!! Totally gratuitous effing and blinding from a couple of lager swilling locals.......All so unnessecary!

Sorry to read the rather mixed reviews of the good old B and C. This was my first "proper" local back in the 1960s (I wasn't quite 18!!). Sticky and Olive Smith were the licensees and ran a very tight ship. Ushers "Boys bitter" was 1/2 a pint and I don't think they stocked any of that new fangled lager!! Must call in again next time I'm passing

0600 Sunday 14th May 2011 - Most of Weymouth Police dealing with the usual crowd of drunken louts that seem to be the only customers these days!

A gem of a back street local! Friendly staff and with a couple of well kept cask ales on at 2.65 a pint.

Three Horseshoes, Watton at Stone
Visited as a useful RV before a funeral at Harwood Park. As a visitor it was good to try the three McMullens ales on offer; the AK was my favourite. Returned later for an excellent meal. Staff very friendly and reasonable prices

The Crooked Billet, Leigh on Sea
I thoroughly endorse the previous reviews about it being the best pub in Leigh. Seems to have got a bit more "Pubcoish" recently; They used to run a beer festival years ago which was interesting given the size of the place!

Nearest pub to the inlaws so I invariably get in there whenever we are visiting.........Beer always reliable and the food is excellent as well
12 Sep 2010 03:38
The Clifton marketing campaign seems to be to put shoddy hand written signs all over the island........just about sums up the place really!

The Clissold Arms, East Finchley
Paid my first visit recently for many years having heard all the dire warnings but wasn't too disappointed. Timothy Taylor Landlord was on handpump (one of my all time favourites). A bit pricey at 3.40 but also had a very reasonably priced dinner served by efficient, friendly staff. Ended up spending most of the evening in their garden and made sure the TT quality remained consistent!

Called in here entirely on spec while in the smoke to visit the British Library. Wasn't expecting much but was very pleasantly surprised. Beers on offer:- Youngs Bitter and Golden, Bombadier, Deuchars IPA and Brains SA; all in good nick and dispensed by a very knowledgable barman. The Youngs Golden was only 2.75 a pint (Cask ale at least 2.95 at home).

Just been refurbished and its going from strength to strenght! 3 ales on stillage plus 2 handpumps allow an ever changing range of guest ales.
Basic pub food available Thursdays to Saturdays and its very family friendly.

So glad the Standard is re-opening. I look forward to using it again and the very best of luck to dazd1970 with your new venture. Please don't change it too much and recommend you get in a pub ferret!

After many recommendations finally made the Stars. 7 cracking beers on ; the three we tried were in excellent condition. All that it needs to be perfect is to lose the TV and poole table

To add to what Roarth reported: beer improved overnight, new tenants very pro-active and are in the process of gaining cask marque acreditation. Abbot and Speckled Hen on hand pump. Further stillage will be on stream later in the year

Why do people have such high expectations of a Wetherspoons? They are a cheap, bland chain with micro-wave based cooking and poorly paid staff. The only possible reason for going in one is the cheapness of the beer (don't expect the bar person to have a clue what they are serving!)

Generations of Portland based sailors will remember this as the good old Harbour Club otherwise known as the "sticky carpet". Not worth bothering with any more!
6 Nov 2009 04:05
After an all too brief dalliance with cask ale now reverted to the usual range of tasteless fizz
6 Nov 2009 04:01
Why anyone would actually volunteer to drink in this dump is beyond me!
6 Nov 2009 03:55
If you value your health then for Gods sake don't eat anything that has been prepared here!!

Stop Press! New landlord arriving in November. I eagerly await an improvement!!
24 Oct 2009 13:34
Very pleasant pub: friendly staff, good reasonably priced food and superb ales
19 Oct 2009 15:35
Just spent a weeks holiday nearby. Visited the Ox twice and I can only echo previous reviews. Great food and one of my all time favourite beers Timothy Taylor Landlord in superb condition. Staff all excellent; wish it was my local!!
19 Oct 2009 15:33
The "Mucky Duck" a Wetherspoons!!!! You'll be saying next that Brickwoods has closed down!
6 Oct 2009 14:47
The Hunters Lodge Inn, Leigh Common
This was a fantastic pub when run by the Simpkins in the 60s and 70s.
Visited recently "for old times sake" and what a change for the worse! Grubby, disinterested staff, indifferent (and expensive) beer. Its true what they say.....You can't go back!!
6 Oct 2009 14:32
This was one of my favourite local haunts back in the 70s and 80s and it sounds like its gone from strength to strength. Will certainly be looking in next time i'm in that neck of the woods
6 Oct 2009 14:29
Does anyone remember the Dolphin when Mick Taylor was mine host? Happy Days!!
6 Oct 2009 14:23
The Woolpack Inn, Tillicoultry
Always make a point of caling in when we visit friends in the village. Usually 3 or 4 ales on; generally in good condition. Very friendly locals - you won't be short of someone to talk to! Recommended

Headstandking: The reason I patronise a pub is so I am not surrounded by kids!! Bring back the law banning under 14s. Wish there were a few more enlightened landlords around!
5 Oct 2009 05:47
Well known locally as needing a second mortgage to buy a round!!
5 Oct 2009 03:19
With regard to the comment by Steve45 re inclusion in the CAMRA guide....It has now been dropped for the very reasons he cites. Due, it seems to a change of landlord
4 Oct 2009 19:59
The Masons and Mariners, Portland
No real ale so forget it......When it was the "Viccy Lodge" it had the distinction of being out of bounds to RN personnel!
4 Oct 2009 19:55
Best to visit out of season when its not full of yobbish, foul mouthed divers!
4 Oct 2009 19:51
The Rose and Crown, Huish Episcopi
So glad to read that "Eli's" doesn't appear to have changed much since my last visit. Does the flock of geese still live in the gents?
4 Oct 2009 19:47
Glad to read that it doesn't appear to have changed much since I did my courting here in the 80s! Got engaged one evening after about 8 pints of Pride!! (Still going strong after 23 years)
4 Oct 2009 19:35
The Spread Eagle Inn, Stourton
This used to be a good old local but is now very foody. On a recent visit I felt uncomfortable just supping a pint at the bar. Incedentally their claim to fame is that David Niven scratched his name on the window to the left of the door (He was stationed nearby during the war).....Do hope hasn't been restored away!!
4 Oct 2009 19:23
With regard to the Ruth Ellis connection: When I was last in that neck of the woods the bullet holes from shooting her lover were still visible in the external wall tiles....Uh Uh I suppose neck of the woods is an unfortunate euphonism in view of her fate!!!
4 Oct 2009 19:18
Thoroughly endorse previous reviews. Great drinking pub with very well kept cask ales and friendly landlord
4 Oct 2009 05:23
Glad to hear that the dear old Bush is still going strong since we lived next door from 1958- 1964. Basic food then and exclusively Ushers beers. Chickens used to live in one end. Will make a point of calling in next time I'm passing
4 Oct 2009 05:18
My grandparents were the licencees here in the 1930s and our family used to call in there during the 50s and 60s. Exterior still recognisable from phots of the 30s although the orchard is now the car park and they have put in mains water and electricity! Apparently was very popular with cyclists before the road became so busy. Judging by previous reviews things have gone down hill!!
4 Oct 2009 05:10
This was one of my first regular watering holes in the 60s. Single stone flagged room with fire place and the bar was a hole in the wall. Don't recall that they did anything as poncy as food! Gents was a screened off part of the yard with a hole in the ground - raining and you got wet! Used to be good for "lock ins". Gradually "gentrified" over the years but was still OK last time I was in.
4 Oct 2009 05:01
An oasis in what has become a concrete jungle! Full range of "Hidden" beers all in good nick and friendly, knowledgable staff
3 Oct 2009 23:59
The only pub I know with a resident ferret! Great beer and friendly landlord. A truly quirky local!!
3 Oct 2009 23:40
For years has been the home of the best kept ale on the island. A proper local with friendly landlord and clientele and a great pint of Tribute
3 Oct 2009 23:33
Oh Dear!
Real Ale very indifferent and expensive, no one else in and truly hideous pumps on the bar!! A great shame as it could be a little gem.
3 Oct 2009 23:30
The best pub in Weymouth bar none!! Don't go for the canned musak, the wide range of alcopops or the smoothflow...........Because you won't find them! You will enjoy the superb beers, very convivial atmosphere and the craic
3 Oct 2009 23:27
The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers
If you enjoy Wetherspoons, Brewers Fayre, Theme type pubs then you won't like the S and Q. Wish it was my local!
3 Oct 2009 23:21
The Kings Arms, Weymouth
Popped in for a beer recently......but no luck. Chronically understaffed the two young ladies behind the bars were more interested in chatting to each other and their mates than serving customers. Gave up eventually and went along to the Red Lion!!
