| Great pub in a lovely part of England.. I'm a midlander, but, have have fond memories of various stays in an around Newcastle... Tynemouth is a lovely place, steeped in history and feels a little 1950's slice of England at times. Since our son went to Northumbria University we've visited often, and have nothing but kind words for the Geordies... so to the Cumberland arms.. cracking food and beer in lovely building.. north-eastern-brewery River-catcher plus the house Breetches bitter and Pentland ale.. all very nice and recommended. | Recently underwent a high quality refurbishment. The place has been opened up and is more spacious and airy. A couple of real ales on, I had the Great North Eastern Breeches Buoy which looks to be a house beer. Good quality beer. | It's not terrible but with so much competition it didn't rate very high on our tour of the Tyne area. However they did do food which is not easy to find in the evenings in the area. Having said that it wasn't great. When we arrived the place was heaving but seemed to be a stop off point to other evening acivities as about 50 people left whilst we were there. Onto the beers; given the choice in the area the selection was small and disappointing. Arundel Castle, Wadworth 6X, Greenjack Trawler and Allendale Gold. We had the latter and it was delicious. | This pub had gone downhill at my last visit, I was issued a guest ales collector card last Autumn which I was told would last a full year, when I tried to use it on a recent Saturday the young barmaid told me not only was it invalid at weekends - I only ever visit at weekends, but it was a 2012 card. The beer I selected was the first of the day out the pump - at 13.15, no wonder they had so few customers, I asked whether it had been pulled through that morning and was informed no, the pumps are cleaned every 2 days, she did however pull 1/2 pint through. The beer was very vinegary and the next customer asked for the same, predictably the cask ran out. The alternative we both got was very flat and dissapointing. All pumps should be tested for quality by the landlord or qualified staff every session, this barmaid was obviously neither. Loyalty cards should be honoured, the Ts & Cs made no mention of weekends.
