Efficient barman, 3 handpumps but only 1 ale on, Draught Bass [not bad], pub was quiet on our friday night visit.

Building of character, barman was friendly, beer garden at the back. Bass on cask, basic beer but well kept.

Dropped in here as it's one of the few pubs singled-out for a mention in the guide to the town and the wall paintings sounded interesting. What a disappointment - only one real ale (the ubiquitous Doom Bar), unnecessary anonymous vaguely-dubby piped musak, and done up in the sort of comfy lounge-bar way that unimaginative pubco's think will appeal to tourists. Shame - it's a lovely old building and could be so much better. Go to the Three Fishes or the Loggerheads to see how it's done!

on my way past to a real ale pub ( the salopian) i thought i would have a look and my i was surprised , we ended up having lunch of slinky sausage ( as the monument down the road is called the slinky) , local meats ,well priced , local produce , fresh and hot . I only drink real ale and was surprised to see a black sheep on the tap , nice and clean , tasty bar maid ,, i highly reccommend as i heard that it was new landlady

First port of call in my short recent short visit to Shrewsbury. From the outside it looked really enticing, as the old tudor style paneling promised a old worldy feel. Sadly once inside that's where it went wrong. It looks like they've modernised it to a fashion. In doing so they have taken all of its potential charm away.
As regards the beer offerings they lacked any imagination. A paltry three handpumps; two of them being Bombardier and the other a Spitfire.
Although I didn't try the food the menu looked very reasonable.

Great barstaff, shame about the landlady. She could learn alot about customer satisfaction from them. Definatley won't be returning to this pub after overhearing the way some customers who have a genuine complaint are thought of. Definatley nothing special don't base your whole opinion on shrewsbury just from this pub... Far better ones to visit!

I disagree with some of the comments about this pub. Yes it does get a bit quiet in the afternoons after 4pm whern the kitchen closes but until then its a very good food-oriented pub that serves grub ranging from bacon sarnies to rump steak dinners. Only beers available are Worthington's & John Smith's but I 've never had a bad pint here. The local radio station, The Severn, is played here and very good it is too. Probably not the best pub in Shrewsbury then, but there are a lot worse than this.

The photo image 1 is of The Crown, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.
Photo Image 2 is of The Kings Head, Mardol, Shrewsbury.
Archivist is correct about the interior, it was "modernised in the late !960s, although I prefer the term " corporate vandalism ". I have not visited it for many years simply because the exterior promises so much but on entering it is such a disappointment.

Don't know what Snaggie is on about. Clearly talking about a different pub.

This isnt the prettiest pub in the whole of Britain, its not even in the top 10 in Shrewsbury. See Loggerheads, Nags Head etc
The ancient painting of the Last Supper has a plaque underneath it that says SOME people have said that it MAY depict the last supper. Lets be honest its too faded to be sure what it shows.
Shrewsbury isnt in the SE of England.
Now lets have a reality check.
Its a pub with a great exterior with black and white timbers which overhang the street and mullioned windows. Sadly once you get inside its been opened out into one room from what obviously used to be at least two and possible three. There are low beams, lots of brass and bric-a-brac around the walls along with pictures of old Shrewsbury. For some reason the beams are all hung with fairy lights. There is blue covered seating to the left which is pretty decent and two dartboards to the right as you enter. On the bar are a standard range of lagers, there is a handpump but there wasnt even a pumpclip on it, so I have to assume its not used. Last night the clientele consisted of two p*ssed up old farts, swearing at each other and a slightly dodgy looking couple surrounded by shopping bags sat in the window seat. All this action whilst listening to the adverts played on the local radio station which was the background music. There is so much potential here, sadly its pretty crap all round at the moment.

Firstly, the photo is wrong ! This is the prettiest old Pub in all of Britain (really). It was originally the local Bishop's residence. Secondly, no commenter thus far has even been there, or they would have mentioned the ancient painting of The Last Supper on an interior wall. Thirdly, it has the most curteous proprietor (a lady of Czech origins) and easily the best food in the area. Fourthly, it is the pub of choice for the local Regiment (no lager louts in here).
I am a 60 something Aussie, who recently toured SE Britain with my wife and and sister-in Law. We ate almost exclusively in old pubs. This one topped our list, and they insisted we go back there most days we were in the area. If you like old Pubs, you are an idiot to miss this one.

Lovely wooden facaded Tudor styled building, indeed it has a picture of Henry VII on the outside as 'the king's head', presumably as he passed through Shrewsbury on his way to Bosworth where he defeated Richard III.
The interior is again, Tudor styled and a bit twee, but i didnt find it that run down, nor the bogs that pungent
Usual taps with no real ale, it did at least have M&B MILD, which was decent enough, but again, with a plethora of quality places to drink, why bother with this one

Don't be fooled by the beautiful exterior of this place, this pub is utterly dreadful! It has so much potential but it is run down & tatty. The toilets are disgusting & you can smell them from the bar. I didn't even bother trying their range of over-priced euro fizz & instead had a small glass of orange juice & left swiftly.
|
As mentioned before a totally great looking exterior greets you, its one of those buildings that has "moved location" in its time literally speaking. Expecting there to be a good selection of ales we were severely dissappointed to find GK IPA only on which was the most rancid putrid pint of GK IPA i have ever ever tasted, was happily swapped over though give them their due 4 a pint of fizzy stuff, 4/10 if just 4 the building!

Looks great from the outside but that's about it.
I was served a near undrinkable pint of Staropramen by a rather surly barman. I sat down in the rather unimpressive surroundings to hear a bunch of sad bores on the next table boasting loudly of their (imaginary?) sexual exploits. I drank up as quick as I could without vomiting and left.
Next time I'm passing, I'll keep passing.

Please note - the photo is not the Kings Head - it's the Crown on Abbey Foregate.

The last time I went in was about 6 months ago. The landlord was the most miserable so and so you could imagine. We drank up and haven't been back since.
It should be a great boozer, but the grimy interior and unpleasant landlord really let it down.
|
Nicely refurbished 15th century pub. Clean and well run. Some character has been lost in the refurbishment - the standard issue pub-chain upholstery is minus - but it's a pleasant enough place.
|
Just to let you all know, this is still a let down. What a wonderful exterior - but that's the place to stay.
|
drank in there last week, pretty characterless, compared to how it used to be in the mid 80's

Went in this pub as it looked fab from the outside but what a let down when you walk through the door. Its a cross between what used to be a fine traditional pub a workingmans club and a greasy spoon! I asked the old geezer behind the bar for some darts as there were numerous dart boards dotted around the place but was told ' oh no we dont give out the darts during the day because people are eating food'. It was 4pm and the only people in the place were a group of old men in the corner!!! Amazing. I drank in here a few times about 12 years ago when i lived in shrewsbury, its amazing how a place can change so drastically :-(

We serve traditional English meals with an excellent range of tap beers and fine wines
