Pub goes quite a way back, good beer garden/smoking area at the rear, staff friendly. I had pints Windsor & Eton ''Guardsman'' [quite tasty] & Emoor ''Silver Stallion'' [pleasant smooth ale].
|
reasonable selection of ales - Brakespear was good - if you're peckish and don't fancy full blown meal go for the Scotch Egg...top draw.
|
Visitors to the area may be pleased to note.... this pub is in an historic area, and no more than a few yards from the front door of this fine drinking establishment, is a set of ancient stocks in the pavement..!! You may not notice them, as they appear part of the frontage of the shop they are outside. Take a look next time you're down Eton high street. :o) 6/10

I called in at the ol' Henry 6th midweek to catch the Champions league footy match, but unfortunately they don't show sport here. Which is probably why I was the ONLY customer in the place at 6.30pm....!! Quaint. Lovely pub, friendly landlord (well, he'd have to be...I was the only person there....for half an hour or so. Which the locals might like, a few (....5....!) came in around the 7pm mark. You wonder how a business can survive? But maybe its rammed at weekends and on warmer days. I will return another time, but its a bit of a hike from Windsor train station, and there are SO many other pubs along the way, I may get distracted (sorry cfc Shed man!) :o)

Very quiet on a wednesday. Looks like the weekend is the time to go, when it all kicks off at kempton.
|
A bit soul-less and cold . But I was there on a (very quiet) Thursday night
|
Atmos ok and beer fine but wish I'd eaten my Sunday Lunch at the Christopher accross the road. 1 slice of leathery beef for me and a mieserly portion of chilli con carne to accompany the huge bowl of rice for my girlfriend. Perhaps they thought we were tourists. Definately taking our next guests somewhere else.
|
I have been using this pub on and off for the last 8 years. It is very friendly, with a lovely group of people. I have read the other reviews and totally disagree. A lovely pub with live music.
|
sterile, cold, a place for lager-boys on the pull in cheap cologne to gather before heading into windsor. it's all hair-gel, and lynx. avoid if you want a drink in a pub, or don't avoid if you've had a bad day, and you need to look down on everyone to cheer yourself up!
|
Pub with updated decor, probably trying to appeal to tourists but it was pretty empty when we were there on a Saturday lunchtime. Only one cask ale on (Brakspear's Bitter), and while perfectly drinkable it was in below average condition. Pints were served very short, but to be fair, on request were topped up to the brim without question, with the comment that many customers like a big head. (It's annoying when you ask for a top-up of 85% of a pint, and they top it up to 90%).
I see no reason why I would return, but it's not my sort of place - others will no doubt like it a lot more than I did!

Following the review of Ron55 (a self confessed regular), I thought I would try to update on my prior review from a more impartial perspective.
The beer choice is still shocking and the landlord knows as much about keeping real ale, as I do about astro-physics (nothing just in case you wanted clarification). The staff are (on the whole, not all of them), ignorant . The interior is still very comfortable and the food, as Ron55 says, is excellent.
Beer garden still fails to inspire.
As for Ron55's statement that this is the best pub in Eton and and possibly Windsor - sadly, I, and many others, would beg to differ. Probably suits the regulars, but I find it rather unwelcoming and only visit now if I have to.

I am a regular at this pub which is why I am appalled at the last two very incorrect reviews. The pub was recently refurbished in January, note Drunken Ducks previous review stating the smell of paint then in his latest review he claims it needs a refurb! The pictures of the pub are out of date. The food is great, so much so it has had great reviews by Giles Coren in the Times Magazine. It is most definitely the best pub in Eton and I would go as far to say in Windsor. It is always busy with a very nice mix of people. Anyone in the area will always say there is a good buzz about the place, and at weekends it most definitely comes alive. I recently went to their 70's night which was absolutely packed. What a fantastic night, most people dressed up including the band with prizes given out at the end. You get much more than just a pub from this place. The new owners have really turned this place around and I would certainly recommend this place for a great night out at weekends along with a lovely place for a bite to eat. Don't be put off by the previous reviews.

Have not been in this pub for ages - but last time I was there the Toilets Stank and are less than adequate for a Pub hosting live music in Eton. I agree with Screwedover about the need for a refurb. The Manager who had been there for years left recently so that could account for the amatear and slow service. Try the Two Brewers by the Castle (top of the long walk) in Windsor. Much better.
|
Hated it!! Food was terrible and expensive for what it was. Very amateur. Service was slow and management rude. Small and pokey. Can never get served quickly at the bar and the toilets are smelly, unclean and to be honest, need a good refurb. The garden is okay but full of young kids being rowdy - There are many decent places around Windsor & Eton - This is just not one of them. Id steer well clear.
|
Great atmosphere, great food, great decor. I stumbled across this place with some friends and now can't keep away. The atmosphere at the weekend is brilliant, especially when live bands play. Definately recommend.......what a find!

This is how I imagined an Eton pub would be like - overpriced, wooden floors, snooty looking babes wearing clothes far more expensive than my entire wardrobe
The pint I had in here was very pleasant to be fair, so it's not a bad pub
|
I have visited this pub on several occasions for both food and for just a night out drinking. I must say that the food has always been excellent and it is often very hard to get a table especially on a Sunday lunchtime when their roast dinners are exceptional. They also have live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings which means a very busy and fun atmosphere. I would definately recommend this pub for anyone who enjoys good food and a great atmosphere!

Been shut for about a week for a Paint Job. Re-opened last night and was packed a Local Group "Million Dollar Bash" was playing. However the smell of paint was off putting and did not stay.

This pub is very close to my house, but after my last experience I will not be returning. I took some friends here, telling them it was a nice place where we could have lunch. The waitress was surly and it got to the point where we were too afraid to ask for anything else from her. I ordered a small orange juice with my lunch, and I got no more than 100 ml of juice in a glass. Noticing that all my friends who had ordered small soft drinks had managed to receive a full half-pint's worth of beverage, I took my drink to the bar to query my drink with the manager. He treated me with total contempt for even wanting to discuss it, explaining that the orange juices come from 'special' small bottles, so there was nothing he could do about it. He said that if I wanted he could fill my glass up with ice so it looked like I had more juice than I really had. I told him that I didn't realise that I couldn't just order a standard juice, and came from a special gourmet bottle, as he was so keen to emphasise, and as I didnt want to pay 1.65 for 100 mls of orange juice I would like to return it and have it removed from the bill. At this he became ruder and ruder, and the surly waitress was also standing beside him scowling at me, as he argued that that was 1.65 that I'd just cost the pub.
I'd noticed the rudeness of the waitress I mentioned before on previous visits to the henry, but had shrugged it off. But after discovering the attitude even the manager has towards customers, I have lost all respect for it.

Warm, welcoming and certainly a good deal more pleasant than the New College Arms just along the road.
|
This is a pub that could do so well, but disappoints. Over priced in all areas and a poor beer choice. Found some of the staff to be ignorant and lacking knowledge too. At weekends, they plonk a live band in the narrowest area possible. Saying this makes is cosy is an understatement. Beer garden is spacious, but a huge brick wall bordering it makes is unappealing.
|
Very friendly atmosphere didn't feel unwelcomed but is one of my cousin's locals was welcomed by a number of people old and young. Drinks were ok happened to be a live band on stage which was quite good, does lack in space I feel but couldn't complain. Nothing outstanding about the place but no complaints I wouldn't say no to going again so give it a try 5/10

well i went back to this pub and i must say, wasn't as impressed this time.
i dont know what has happened to the food - or the chef, but it was awful. It took over 45 mins to arrive and after al that, was cold and didn't taste that great. The pub was full of football fans drinking noisily, pushing and shoving so i must say i didnt enjoy this experience at all.
I dont think i would go back again. A shame after being quite impressed the first time but after having such an awful experience, i just dont think id risk it.

My partner and i have visited this pub on a few occasions and must say, our last visit was fantastic. We wanted to take our parents out for a quiet sunday roast and wanted somewhere that wasn't too commercial, neither did it have screaming kids. We instantly thought of the Henry and i must say, we all had a fantastic time. So much so, we stayed all afternoon!
The food was excellent. Real homemade yorkshire puddings (Which my Dad loved!) and the sticky toffee pudding was a great end to a fantastic meal. Although it was quite busy, we found a table quickly but we had to wait a little while for the food. The atmosphere was very cosy and relaxing so it didn't bother us..
The only downside i would say is that the toilets could have done with improving. They were a bit grotty and a bit smelly from the gents. I would have been nice if the fires were lit, however, it was a lovely afternoon and my parents have already asked when we can all visit again.
I would certainly recommend this pub for families without children or for those who enjoy a good independent pub with great food and atmosphere.

I used this website to find a nice place to go whilst staying in Windsor for our Christmas party and tried a few places mentioned in the high street. We had trouble getting a table on Sunday afternoon for lunch but hung around as we loved the ambience of the place and especially christmas decorations and winter pimms. The menu was fantastic (especially the crab cakes) and good value and well worth waiting for all though it was slightly noisy from the football being shown at the opposite end of the bar. We ended up staying another night at the hotel opposite after enjoying a wonderful night of live music with a Irish band. I will be coming back again. Great place

What a pretentious pub. This used to be great. What happened? Over priced but not bad beer.
What's all the sofas for. Landlord..THE PLACE ISN'T BIG ENOUGH !
It's now a pub that is trying to be something it's not.
The heart and soul has gone from this pub !
|
not a bad boozer but i get the feeling its the best of a 'ok' lot in the area. Its good, but not great and the service was pretty slow. Tight in there when it gets busy, the bands play in a tight area which is quite frankly in the way so the enjoyment of watching them is not as it could be. That said, its not a bad choice if you want a pint in the week and want to go somewhere that looks nice and is a no brainer.

Recently popped in here on a Saturday evening after being at the races at Windsor. There was no one behind the bar and after waiting 5 minutes only to discover the barstaff were sat on the couch watching the sports and were in no rush to serve. Obviously didn't bother staying.

Cracking boozer, decent ale, great live music from the fabulously versatile Steve on Sunday nights - ranges from 'Carrickfergus' to Green Day, Gershwin to the Jam, Billy Joel to the Pogues. A splendid night out.
|
This pub has been tarted up since I was last visited, its food and decor has gone a bit more upmarket. The lunchtime food menu is good if a fraction pricey. As a guide to main couse sausages and mash in onion gravey costs 8.99 although it does have a 4.50 sandwich menu.
The Pub used to be buzzing in the evening, with 30+'s buzzing to live music over the weekend. I don't know if this is still the case.
|
Great all round pub, shows appropriate sport on the flat screen and goes to town when there's a big fixture or a big event. Food is superb, staff are friendly and the beer garden since the refurb is quite excellent. Wish I lived a bit nearer to it as it would definitely be my local!
|
Very busy pub when live Music is on, If you want a seat or hear yourself talk get there before the music starts at 9pm. usually have the same acts on each week which is OK, but you tend to get the same music set each time you go in. Greatly improved since this years re-vamp. Great beer garden for the Summer nights. Has flat screen TV for Sports but no sound when I was in there. Good Barman in Eddie who seems to have been a fixture in several pubs in Eton for many years and is backed by several female friendly staff.

This used to be the best pub in Eton, until it changedThis used to be the best pub in Eton, until it changed hands about a year ago. It now cannot decide whether it's a pub or a restaurant. Still, Tony (The manager) and the rest of the bar staff are very friendly and the sandwiches at lunchtime are superb.

Good all rounder, massively improved with the new, very large beer garden at the back, friendly chatty staff and some great live music. Also cater for all important football games without accomodating lad culture. Won't let me take in my little dog though which I suppose is fair enough, but will always go back when I don't have her with me. WELL DONE !
|
Live music, a beer garden, and a good crowd. Beer choice not great, but had good cider available.
|
this pub is great for familys. live music big screen tv nice drinks 5 star service
|
My favourite pub ever!!! Friendly place and great live music.
anonymous - 7 Apr 2006 11:35 |
Friendly Staff, and although the beer selection is seriously lacking, the Bombadier they sell is probably the best pint of it i've ever had!
|
Good all year round pub. Cant complain on anything really.

Great staff. Friendly Irish pub. Lack of choice of proper beer, the only problem. Live music available Thursday to Sunday.
|
Great pub great location. For those of us who live near Slough but don't like drinking there this place is brilliant. Great Guinness and live music is good. Only downside is that it is the place to be on a Sunday night and as such gets very very crowded. this sometimes can be a bit much (How old am I ???) Food is reasonable and if I remember rightly a BBQ is usually on offer during the Summer. A great garden with lots of extra seating and lovely for thos summer nights drinking Guinness with your friends.
Meach - 20 May 2005 21:30 |
Always has a good atmosphere with some good live music. The only let down is poor selection of ale.
Kevin - 19 Nov 2004 10:46 |
Live music every weekend night, food served daily,Plasma wide screen tv. Must get there early on the weekend for a table. Garden with additional outside bar and BBQ. unfortunately NO children.

Great pub for all year - cosy in the winter, big decked area with outside bar in the summer. Fab atmosphere and good live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Worth the wander over from Windsor if you're in the area.
