Has been opened up and freshly decorated by the look of things including Warholesque Lord Nelson pictures at the far end where I didn't go. Fairly basic (perhaps because of the opening up) locals' pub. Overcold Doom Bar was 3.60 a pint but 2.00 for a half, which is a creeping practice and discriminatory against people who prefer to drink a half.
|
An excellent tiled exterior to the pub, something worth looking at,unfortunately thats the only positive thing i can say about it. Inside seemed rather souless and the only ale on offer was the rather bland London Pride . I wont plan to return.
|
Friendly pub with a surprisingly good range of food and a brilliant "Open Mic" every Thrsday!
|
A fairly roomy pub on the main drag between South Wimbledon and Collier's Wood, The Nelson has a lot of character but seems to be rather quiet of late. I've passed it twice recently on a Friday and Saturday night when it should be busy and there's been hardly a soul in it which is a shame as it's a decent pub which serves a good pint. Five minutes' walk from Merton bus garage and Collier's Wood tube, it's worth stopping off for a couple.

We had an amazing time at our anniversary party here and would use again for any other party or get together.
|
Not at all bad...... My expectations where low and this place easily surpassed them.... competition is not too hot around here, but this place deserves support.
|
Popped in here last night as part of a mini-crawl - probably didn't see it at it's best at 10.30 on a Tuesday with only one other person (who at least resembled Murray Walker) in the pub. Hobgoblin was in good order - decor/promotional toot suggests that this is a good pub to watch rugby/sports in - probably helped by the whopping 60" plasma
|
There was a league dart match going on in here when I visited mid week before Christmas so there was a lively atmosphere which probably isnt always present, but I enjoyed it. A laptop was hooked up to one of the plasma screens which was showing the scores and players averages which Ive never seen before. It was good to see a dartboard as a feature slap bang in the middle of the pub rather than being shoved in the corner.
Two Hobgoblin ales were available along with Greene King IPA and a standard draught selection. My Guinness was on good form and the barman seemed friendly enough.
I wouldnt go out of my way to drink here again, but Im sure there is a good crowd when the football is on.

My apologies for not posting earlier. As I was working in London some time ago, I stumbled upon this lovely old traditional boozer. Not the run of the mill gastro pubs that have killed all the real haunts off. The beer is fresh as its turned over quickly. The ambience is lovely with all walks of life, from the lads who compete on PS3'S PES10, to the open mike nite on Thursdays. Superb sporting coverage for all Footie/Rugby & Boxing heads
Great service with a lot of thought put into the menu which is SIMPLY FANTASTIC. Cleaver Tapas menu beautifully presented. Great rib eye steaks. knock out sunday roasts. All to many to mention but the flavours still remain in my mind.
As I said to the owners Amit and Kel I'm no pretentious foodie I just love good food. This place should be rebuilt in South Bristol at the end of my street. I hope the new year continues to be a great sucess for you both.
c u through the window I hope

Went in not expecting any bitter, but they had 2 (although 1 finished after the first round). Nice tapas too.
|
Excellent place to watch the football, especially European nights as the landlord has 2 sky receivers so they show both games. I can also recommend the burgers - they actually have hand cut chips!
|
Not sure about this place. Seemed a bit mutton-dressed-as-lamb. Looks nice, but staff were a little funny with me for no apparant reason. Didn't really feel very welcome.
|
A great pub to go to just to have a drink or to have a nice meal! The staff were really attentive and service was swift and with a smile. Only living ten minutes away i will deffinetly be frequenting here as a regular, especialy as the owner said there's a loyalty card being introduced soon!! What a fantastic idea for a pub! I just can't wait to get there again soon, 10/10!!
|
We first discovered The Nelson when searching for a cool venue to watch the Hatton Vs Mayweather fight in Dec 2007 and havent had another local since! Fantastic food, a great atmosphere and the staff always take incredible care of us. We threw a summer BBQ this year and it was a hit with all our friends, who are now happy to commute from all over London here. There are so many bad pubs in London and its refreshing to drink in a place that gets everything right and where the owners actually care about more than just the bottom line.
If youre in SW London then definitely check it out!!! 10/10
|
Poor service as a chef myself I found it hard to eat the food thankfully i was ok
|
Nice place, friendly, good food and beer.
TVs in the beer garden nice touch especially when there is rugby on!
|
I've been a regular in the Nelson since it was re-fitted in 2006 and its a welcoming, comfortable pub, with a decent atmosphere. The food is good and there's plenty of drinks to choose from.
Its probably not an ale drinkers pub, although the hobgoblin is good, but if you like a friendly, fun place to eat and drink then you'll enjoy it.
|
Has an attractive Charringtons tiled exterior and I rather expected less than I got inside. It has clearly had some money spent on it recently and theyve spent wisely and created a nice bar. Two hand pumps one of which was serving Black Sheep Bitter. A bit expensive but Im sure it gets plenty of custom.
|
We held a 30th for two friends here, and it was a great night! Thanks to the Nelson Arms for organising everything so well! The food was brilliant and good value for money.
|
better when it was the old nelson
|
Spent a pleasant Friday evening in here. Prices a little steep but at least that seems to keep the riff raff out. Decent enough landlord and staff, couple of good bands, no pond life, no trouble, beer choice could be better but I guess it's mainly aimed at lager drinkers and the keg bitter was drinkable enough (also they have light ale so light and bitters were on the cards until the cost became prohibitive).
|
Good pub, nice atmosphere but The Tup rules hands down. Leagues above anything else in the area, though i do frequent The Nelson for a change now and then. Never seen an argument at The Tup let alone a fight, stay away from Blue, GJ's and kiss me hardy, unless you want to scrap of course.
anonymous - 28 May 2007 22:51 |
nice pub all round staff are very friendly and just about the only pub where it doesnt kick off in the area. needs to cater more for the younger ones though as its usually just karaoke or nothing but still worth going to.
|
The pub seems friendly as you walk in, but landlord tends to turn the heating up so you die of thirst and are forced to buy another drink. The food is extremely expensive for what you get, and totally not worthit when you can spend less on a large kebab and chips! Me and my friends also found as it comes to closing time, the landlord becomes rude, and kicks you out. Overall, wouldn't go back there, would prefer to go to the Tup

It's had a makeover and probably looks ok by it but it really wasn't a great place inside before. Looks great from outside as ever. they look to have quite a lot of interesting entertainment on. No ale as far as I'm aware but if you're into your beer you'd do well to head to the Trafalgar or Sultan instead. Would return for aother chance.

Went to The Nelson for their Charity Bash on Friday Night and had a GREAT time!
The atmoshere was rockin, the music was brilliant (the live bands were fantastic as they played varied music)
I was also really impressed because all the ticket and raffle money went to Cancer Research.
Thanks to The Nelson for a great night and I look forward to the Halloween party on 28th Oct!
anonymous - 5 Oct 2006 15:26 |
Last night the Nelson hosted a night of music with all door receipts and raffle proceeds going to Cancer Research. Well over 120 people turned up to see 4 acts (including myself, Cradle, Aylsa, SW20) take a turn on the stage. The night was the idea of a young band called SW20 (check'em out on myspace. The gig was a resounding success - the music rocked - the audience danced, clapped and sang along - in fact the walls of the old place trembled with the good vibes. While last night's gig was a bit of a one off - music continues to be a regular feature at the Nelson. If you missed last night and want to join in pop along on Thursday to the Open Mic night. Also at other times it can be a good place to just chill out.

anonymous? anonymous? anonymous?
If you are going to leave a comment like that about my local, you could at least have the decency to leave your real name. But your type don't have the guts. Do they?
You can say what you want but the bottom line is that the Nelson is a great pub. Ok, it has lost some of its 'traditional' touches, but this only has a positive effect. Comfy seats, a modern edge, a wider range of drinks all help to make it a great place to enjoy a drink at ones leisure. The new owners are really making a go of the music scene there as well and they have some great acts performing various nights.
The new Nelson arms is a pleasent, chilled out place with a friendly landlord and bar staff who are all willing to assist in any way they can upon my visit. I'm sure it will be no different and I think some people can get caught up in the past.
I don't know what pub that anonymous guy was talking about, but it sure wasn't the Nelson arms I know.
|
I was at the Nelson two weeks ago for my frinds 30th - Great atmosphere .. relaxed but fun, great staff and clean and classy surrounding - The new owners are really trying hard and very friendly and attentive to make sure customers feel good, comfortable and enjoy a drink with frinds. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I HAD WITH MY FRIENDS !! I agree its great to use sites like this to give open HONEST and deserving feedback - I'm not sure that the new owners deserve the feedback provided by ''anonymous''. Why ''anonymous''? As such I agree the menu could be better, but then I am convinced with the efforts of the new owners it will be! If I may add my comment, ''the most terrible thing to happen to boozers'' is actually unjust and undeserving feedback like this.. Good luck guys, please don't let disheartening feedback like this get to you.. you know who you are, what you are trying to do with this great venture and thats what counts... There is a lot of room for lots of local pubs .. each and every one has its place! Enjoy yours.... I hope many more poeple come and share my experience, best wishes...

Anonymous, what are you talking about?
This place has gone from being a total dive to somewhere that my friends and I feel totally comfortable and relaxed! I've been to the Nelson a few times since it re-opened (with different groups of people) and have always had a great time.
The Landlord (Amit) came over and had a chat with us the first time we went there and made us feel very welcome. He certainly does not have the "mercenary approach" you talk about.
I have lived in the area for 5 years and walked past the Nelson all the time because it was so un-inviting (most of the time it was empty and looked closed!). I guess the only reason you felt able to leave your wallet at the table was because there was never anyone else in the pub!
However, I do agree with you, this definitely isnt a local boozer and I for one am really glad!
Great Pub, Great Atmosphere
|
This used to have the best atmosphere before the changeover. You could leave your bag or wallet just sitting there on the table as you went to the bar or toilet, safe in the knowledge that it would still be there, untouched, on your return. Now it's had the big makeover, I admit it's more comfortable than the old incarnation, but the vibe is totally different, and I don't mean in a good way. The new air-conditioning system seems to only exist so that the landlord can turn it off on warm evenings and make people drink faster. This is no longer the relaxed, be-as-you-please place it used to be, and it's run by a man with an almost mercenary approach to simply getting your money into the till as quickly as possible. All the decent people who used to make The Nelson the beautiful, eclectic place it was are slowly moving on and I strongly advise you to do the same. You want a nice local-pub atmosphere? Go to the Sultan. You want comfy sofas? Head for GJ's down the road. The Nelson has mutated into a terrible generic wine bar with no character, bouncers who glare at you all night long and a landlord with the unnerving habit of standing close to your table, uninvited, for an uncomfortably long time. The most terrible thing to happen to local boozers since the threat of the smoking ban. Purely awful.

Went to the Nelson Arms for the frist time since it reopened last week. The new owners are really trying to make things work - just look at the long list of events each week. It's got a great atmosphere.
The decor is great, the staff are really friendly and efficient (with at least one really cute barmaid).
The bar isn't that well stocked - no real ale and limited spirits. The menu's a bit dull (and deep fried) - I wouldn't want to come here if I wanted a bite to eat with my pint. I hope these are teething problems.
Good pub. Will go again!
|
Does anyone know whatever happened to Hazel? Little Irish lady, she ran this pub roughly about 5 or 6 years ago?
anonymous - 22 Jun 2006 06:48 |
had an excellent atmosphere and bar staff before it closed recently for refurbishments, thursdays were legendary with the open mic nights, good luck to craig and ursula in the future the best f*****g landlady on earth. hope the new owners keep the open mic night when it re-opens next week or so. promises to be good for watching the world cup with extra large screens and cool decor. good luck guys.
|
Lovely appearance outside and the tiled pictures look great in my opinion. Horrible inside. Nothing much to recommend it. Looks closed now. For refurbishment?? Maybe someone will turn it into a decent pub.
|
Good pub, especially on music nights, I enjoyed seeing John Ozric and Ste from AMS (I believe) play there a while a go. Some very original music in a warm environment with good beer and staff.
|
I heard a rumour that the goldfish bowl was shutting down. No suprised judging by the beer they serve in there.
anonymous - 2 Dec 2005 09:56 |
Really enjoyed open mic night on Thursday, first visit. Nice friendly pub with a good mixed crowd.
|
thursday nights are great for open-mic. come on down and enjoy the varying talent.
friendly staff and nice pool table.
|
Dont know where Mr Anonymous went for a drink, but it couldn't have been here - The beer and guinness was good and staff very friendly. They also have some great live music here on Thursdays and Sundays - I would say the Nelson is far better now than it has been in the past.
|
This pub has rapidly gone down hill over the last few years. Beers terrible and it like sitting in a goldfish bowl. Perhaps they should invest in some net curtains !
anonymous - 25 Apr 2005 10:51 |
The architecture of this pub is wonderfull. friendly enough for a couple of pints before hitting the town.
boz01 - 15 Feb 2005 11:57 |
Under new management now, young Polish landlord. Hopefully it will improve with occasional live music promised and lower prices?
Andy B - 11 Jun 2004 16:24 |
A well run pub in a non descript part of Wimbledon. Overpriced but a decent place. Good for England games.
Bob V - 15 Nov 2003 20:43 |
agree with all previous comments, great pub etc. however the prices are a bit steep.
billy - 31 Oct 2003 13:44 |
Particularly superb tiled exterior - classic pub architecture matched by the service within it seems
patrick - 24 Jul 2003 16:35 |
I have to agree, the landlord here is a really good bloke. It is everything that the people who have already rated this have said!
playgirl c - 9 Jun 2003 12:42 |
Stumbled across this li'l gaff and had a peach of a time!! Have to agree with other comments, the guv'nor is top draw...pity he's a gooner. Drop in and lose a few hours, happliy........
|
The Nelson arms is one of the best pubs in Wimbledon and the landlord Stuart is probably one of the nicest guys I have met. Beer is good and prices are right.
Stuart Nicoll - 30 Apr 2003 21:43 |
Superb music on a Friday night if you like your funky house. Great atmosphere and WICKED sound system!
Alfie - 30 Apr 2003 19:40 |
This a great pub and when the candles are lit (nice touch landlord!) has a cosy, relaxing ambience. I would recommend you go and visit to find out for yourself. The landlords sexy smile tends to make you want to go back for more................!
|
Yep, a great place to get plastered, friendly people, a pool table with a mind of it's own, amiable landlord and scrummy Thai food. Nice.
|
this pub is haunted
|
Top pub - collectively known as HQ. Always a great crowd for football due to the large amount of t.v.'s - the only place you can't see one is in the bog. Go and say hello to Stuart who is the friendly landlord!
Ben - 23 Dec 2002 14:17 |
Great pub for watching footy as shows all the pay per view premierships games.
Russ - 30 Sep 2002 13:04 |
Looked like it was going to be full of unfriendly locals, but the people were actually really nice.
