Otter, Derbyback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Not sure if the posters below just visited on bad days... This is a Vintage inn chain pub (used to be called both the Navigation / White House many years ago) on the A6 between Kegworth and Hathern. As far as these pubs go, this is a very decent one… Beer was Sharps Doom Bar, Fullers Jack Frost & Red Squirrel Scottish ale. Staff were polite, food was excellent, if slightly overpriced... I personally prefer a "proper" pub, but as we were eating @ 6pm Sunday evening this served the purpose very well.

The Kegworth Otter looks nice from the outside but dont bother going here for Sunday lunch unless you have the appetite of a small sparrow ! Its not cheap , around the 10 mark for the main course . What little we got could have fitted on a saucer [not joking] , I had 2 small slices of COLD beef, a shred of cabbage ,a parsnip thinly sliced , a spoonful of hard carrots and 2 halves of roast potato [no mash]. All this served on a cold square plate . The gravy was nice , but failed to warm up this tiny offering . In short this meal was appalling ! I should also mention the staff are not very friendly either. I was taken there as a guest so did not like to complain at the time, this meal was embarrassing.

Superb location, good menu and in the past have had some positive dinning experiences but the last one will definately not be repeated. Which is a great shame, once beyond the frontage the interior falls short of expectations. The toilets are dirty, its shabby (tatty) and the staff have a serious attiutude problem, to the point of my family and me walking out in disbeleif and disgust at the general standard and approach offered by both management and waiting staff. They were sullen, unfriendly and really couldn't be bothered which was very evident from body language, (a shrug of the shoulders when pointed out that a starter was meant to be one for sharing, yet no second plate was offered). We were told to "wait" when we asked for a jug of water to accompany our meal, after waiting over 1/2 an hour to be served. At this point we left having suffered enough humiliation.

We called here after dropping a relative at the airport. Our drinks were fine as was my husbands steak. My beef and guiness pie looked enormous but contained a portion of very tough beef covered with a very thin overcooked pastry lid. We ordered coffee "floaters"which from our position , i could see being prepared at the bar. I witnessed the barman whipping the cream and our waitress dipping her finger in the cream and sucking it, then nodding her head.I presume that she was testing to see if the cream had gone "off". I visited the Ladies toilet before our departure - they were disgraceful. Seats and outside of pans needed a good scrub. We visit the airport on a regular basis but will not be calling at this pub again.

Nice looking location near river, prob great in summer on the deck, but the attention to detail needs adressing - the male toilets need a serious clean not a once over; the food is ok but the prices would imply it is excellent. I had a mixed grill with the steak ordered well done. The blood from my "well done" steak ruined the chips; the black pudding was dry; the bacon and the white pudding was good but the whole thing was not great. 3 real ales on in good form was a big positive though. On the whole i will not be sampling the food again; trying to avoid the toilets; but reckon the beer in the summer while sat outside would be good..

The Otter is nicely situated and is very enticing. Inside the pub is very nicely laid out with great views across the river. It is warm and friendly inside with good seating arrangements. I have visited three times in the last 6 weeks. The menu is attractive. However, the overriding theme is 'cold'! Maybe I was unlucky, but my main course has always been cold. On my last visit the meat was hot and the mash was cold. Even the red wine was freezing! On one visit, several other diners sent their meal back because it was cold. If this could be addressed I'm sure the Otter would go from strength to strength. I won't be going back until I can be sure hot food is being served consistently. If they can achieve that, I will visit regularly.
The deserts are usually excellent. Staff efficient though slightly charmless. Good range of beers but serving cold red wine in my opinion is inexusable.

I am not from this area and was passing by when I saw this pub, very nice and appealing from the outside so we stopped and went in. Very nice inside also and was busy in the early evening. My first ale was good but the second, pulled by another member of bar staff, was terrible, she didn't seem to know how to pull a good pint. As for my meal, the starter was OK but the main meal was absolutely terrible. The overriding taste was of salt, as though the chef had accidentally tipped over the salt pot onto my meal and stirred it in, not very adventurous I know but we both had the same meal and both were affected by this. I explained this to the lady behind the bar who I assume was the manager but she just said, almost inaudibly and insincerely, "oh sorry 'bout that, bye." We had to stop on the way home and buy drinks, my tongue was like a dried up slug in my mouth afterwards! It was the first (and last) time I had ever visited this pub so can only comment on the one visit.

Big rambling place where its continuing popularity (always busy whenever I've called in) is a reflection of the excellent food. It's basically a dining pub but the service is friendly and good and although the real ale selection is very limited (Pedigree) the beer is well kept. Whilst it can get busy the atmosphere is alweays relaxed. Its riverside situation is also a bonus.

This pub is like your usual harvester type place, but food is cheap and very good. The staff are very friendly and helpfully, especially with trying to read the menu when you are my age! The barmaid is especially fit with a nice rounded rear, would definetly go again for the views in and out of the pub!

The pub is situated next to the river soar and has very good views. The food was tremendous and waitress service was also very good.

Good beer, excellent food, friendly staff. Situated on the riverside. Will return to sample more of the menu.

A Vintage Inn pub, so you'll know what to expect if you've ever been to any of the chain.
Still a nice pub, very relaxed atmosphere, good food and also some good beer usually available. Good to watch the river in the summer.

The Otter is a standalone pub out in the countryside. No houses nearby. Its sitting on the banks of the river Soar and in the summer, you can sit in the beer garden and watch the boats go by. The place is big and the food it serves is very very good. There are true chefs in the kitchen. The staff are very friendly. Not a big choice of beer but plenty of wines/spirits. Its a more traditional pub where you can sit, enjoy your pint and watch the world go by.
