Cosy pub - closest to Peveril Castle. Multi roomed around a central bar.
Fire.
Black Sheep in great condition.
There's a lot of choice in Castleton and the competition is maintaining high standards.

I called in Sunday lunch on 15-Sep, whilst on a tour of Derbyshire.
I asked for a pint of Youngs Bitter, poured without the sparkler. The barman refused the 'sprinkler' request, saying it was house rules and made the beer look bad; he said it may be the way it was serverd down south, but not here.
There seemed to be no point in arguing with someone who didn't understand beer... I mean:
1. I am from the north 2. the beer is brewed in the south 3. the customer is always right (beer is better from the barrel, if you can get it ike that); when I worked in a pub, so long as the customer wanted the beer in a legal glass to the legal amount, and was going to pay, we served it.
On a recent tour of N Yorks, every pub was happpy to serve 'sans sparkler' as they are mostly everywhere; why does a pub have to be prescriptive on a matter of how the beer is served?

Excellent.Possibly the best place in Castleton, which is sayng something as the standards are veryhigh. Superb home-cooked food, good choice of beers. It does get busy, the sign of a good place, so get there early!!

Visited castleton from America with my wife. We spent 2 weeks in London and decided to visit a different part of England. We looked online and saw castleton. we decided to book 1 week at The George. When we arrived we were welcomed by the staff. We received our room key and got a tour by one of the staff members named kaylie. she was kind and made us feel welcomed. When we opened the door to our room (room 4) we were amazed! the room was incredibly large, spacious, and clean as can be. After unpacking we planned to visit all the pubs. After going downstairs to have a quick drink we enjoyed it to much too leave. we spent the whole day here having a laugh with the landlord and locals. One of the staff members was quizzing some friends on his break and he gladly let us join in we enjoyed our first day beyond expectations. The next day we went around the village visiting the other pubs they were all disappointing bad ale,bad service, and not very warm or cozy.our third day was spent seeing all the caverns and sights castleton has to offer ( highly recommend blue John mine). We spent the rest of our time at the George along with sightseeing. I have no complaints and neither did my wife( that's a first) castleton is a great place to visit. All the caverns and mines which castleton is know for. If the George keeps it up it will be more popular than the caverns itself.

Very good pub, with excellent food and some good beers too. Deservedly popular, so get there early on weekend evenings unless you want a long wait for food.
We visited here once or twice over Christmas & New Year 2010, as as usual was impressed with the beer quality, price and staff although Chris could do with a "keeping the fire alight course". This is a really great traditional english pub and well worth a visit.
Nice friendly pub with welcoming staff & atmosphere enhanced by good well kept beers and blazing fire in iron stove. Did not try the food but I expect to go back soon so maybe then. One of the best in the Hope Valley. Cheers.
Everything from food to service to staff to prices to rooms to beer to owners was absolutely amazing
This pub is everything you would expect a pub to be. The food here is delicious and you get a lot of food for a little amount of money. The staff here was kind to me. After staying their for only 3 days they all knew my name and I knew there's. As soon as i walked in the door I was greeted with a smile by Richard Symonds the pub owner. The rooms (which were amazingly spacious and fairly cheap per night) was clean and nice. The owners here Ann & Richard Symonds are 2 great people that make sure that your time spent here is perfect.

Food excellent in this place. I had a rabbit pie which I hadn't had before and my associated teenagers went for the gammon steak which was huge. Enjoyed by all. Beer very good and waitresses efficient and friendly even if they did get the bill wrong! All rectified in the end as easy mistakes usually are. Worth a visit again.

Came in here after asking after an old friend in The Old Nag's Head, and was delighted to see, after almost 30 years, my old mate pulling pints behind the bar. Unfortunately it was an extremely busy lunchtime and we couldn't have a proper catch-up session, but the pub was as brilliant as all the other reviews suggest, and what other reasons/excuses would I need to go back there asap???

We spent a couple of weeks in Castleton in November & used the George most days. Most excellent beer, & Chris ain't a bad lad. Highly recommended.
The George is everything you imagine a good pub should be and much more! Pleasant staff, great food, excellent ale and cosy, friendly atmosphere...Perfect!
Although I cannot comment on the accomodation I felt that the food definitely warranted a mention. My party of three all had a different meal at lunchtime on 19th November 2009 in what I would call the Bar; cosy atmostphere, real wood fire, plenty of room and proper stone floor. All meals could not be faulted;not cheap but damn good value for money and the next time that I am in Castleton it will be the George that I will head for for my lunch. Thanks,it was very good.

Went in there on Monday evening for one pint.......but stayed all night! Great little pub,we cleared up on the quiz and other prizes.Real ale was very tasty, well kept and served by very welcoming and friendly staff.Well recommended to all! This place made my inlaws 60th extra special!
I drink in the George regularly and eat there frequently. With five other pubs within three or four minutes I never consider going anywhere else. This a great British pub - good food, good ale, friendly staff, and good value for money, what more could anyone ask?
Good little pub. Beer well kept, if a little slow to turn around. Friendly bar staff who are always willing to stop for a chat.
Fantastic place! The customer service is absolutely outstanding and the food is amazing. You'll pay 9 for a main meal and it's worth every single penny! I would recommend both the rabbit pie and lamb & black pudding pie. The beer quality is great too. An absolute pleasure to visit, I will certainly be going back there and would recommend it to anyone!

Visited Castleton over Bank Holiday 30th April to 4th May 09. We stayed on a local farm campsite and spent hours walking the beautiful countryside. We stopped at The George for a pint and some food and we were really happy with the quality of service and the grub...I had Rabbit Pie and the girlfriend had steak...it was ..lovely.Coming from Darrrrrrrn Saaaarrrf we were really impressed at the value for money ...and the excellent friendly service and quality food..so much so we went back the next day for more after 6 hours of hard walking.....We were told all the local pubs were of a similar standard..we didn't have a chance to check em all out but can only compare to many we visit at home....and The George is excellent.

This is a marvelous pub, hasn't been poncified, good ale and really nice wholesome food.
The rabbit pie was tremendous.
A great pub!
Again, a jolly good pint had, but a little expensive
I was drinking there for a couple of weeks from end Sep 08 & found the beer to be excellent. I didn't eat there, but the food looked fine. Will be there for Christmas.
Me and my wife decided to eat here and although the pub was quiet the staff were friendly and the beer good. I had a rabbit pie which was very tasty if a little on the small side. My wife had steak and ale pie which was ok but nothing to rave about. The chips were not very good ( ye old nags head do perfect chunky and well cooked chips). For almost 10 per meal it was a little on the expensive side for what you got. Still it was a whole lot better than the old nags head burnt steak and ale pie.
I visited the George two or three times during my two day stay in Castleton this week. I did not eat there, so I cannot comment on the food, but the bar staff were very friendly, there was a large selection of Malt Whiskies on offer and two real ales. We took part in the Monday Night Quiz, which was great fun and organised by one of the friendly locals. A proper, traditional pub offering a friendly welcome to locals and tourists alike.
My wife & I and our 2 friends were staying in Castleton for a few days. We had enjoyed a beer or two in the George on the previous night, so decided to eat there the next day. What a mistake! My wife's meal was OK, but the other 3 of us had different pies. The steak & ale pie smelt off, and the rabbit pie was almost inedible. The lamb & black pudding pie was not much better. The vegetables were completely over cooked, and without doubt the worst chips we've ever had anywhere. We complained and asked to see the chef, but he wasn't willing to see us. They reduced the bill by the price of one pie. The "front of house" staff were friendly & understanding, so we didn't give them too much of a hard time as it wasn't their fault. My wife also complained that the ladies loos were not very clean.
A friendly welcome, great beer and fabulous lamb and black pudding pie with fresh veg. My fella raved about his steak and kidney pudding too. The pub was full, with a combination of visitors and locals. The locals were clearly regulars and it is easy to see why.
I can't believe that other customers have enjoyed a meal at the George. We went there on the recommendation of our B&B and had the worst night ever. I ordered some chicken and chips which was so inedible I lost my appetite after 2 mouthfuls (and I like my food..). The chips were dry, the peas overcooked and the chicken looked uncooked. Pale, dry and tepid. Not the crispy, brown, and hot chicken you expect to get on your plate. So I sent it back and didn't order anything else instead(it looked like the kind of place where the chef spits in your food if you order anything else). Sadly there was no apology and the staff made me feel like I had commited a crime by complaining, and when we came to pay they had even added the 'chicken and chips' to the bill. When we refused to pay, the waiter told us he would have to speak to the landlord and said, I quote 'I wouldn't advise that'. What had we let ourselves in for? And lo and behold, the landlord sat down and instead of apologising, accused us of trying to get a freebie like the Americans who go there (to which I retorted that I had only had 2 mouthfuls which hardly constitutes a freebie) and threatened to call the police if we didn't pay. Such bad treatment. And the man reckoned his customers are always happy and the place is packed out. Funny then, that on a Friday night the place was virtually empty at 8pm!

i realy like this pub the staff are realy good.meals are excellent.the landlord is helpful and friendly.the whole pub runs good.and the staff treats each other like family and wont hesitate in having a chat with custmers. this is a 10 out of 10 pub top quality public house i would recomend this pub to anyone
Lovely welcoming pub with a good selection of good home cooked food and 3 ales. Our group loved the food and the pub and the way we were looked after. The only gripe I have is that where I live all the real ale pubs do not have sparklers on the pumps. I noticed this and asked politely if he would remove for my pint. At this the landlord was quite offended and said that he would not pull a flat pint and refused. If I had been on my own I would have left to go some where else where the customer is respected. In my opinion my taste is more important than the landlords aesthetically pleasing looking pints.
Lovely roast dinners Would have tried a pie but they hadn't any left. No horseradish sauce either but the mashed potato was magnificent. The Spitfire bitter was excellent so I had 7 pints of it as it would have been rude not to
Great beer, extensive range of malt whiskies, friendly and attentive staff. Good pub food, the lamb and black pudding pie is a gastronomical treat.
very good pub.enjoyed the light show the other week(indoors)
the best pub in castleton without a doubt. good home-cooked food and fantastically well-kept beer. if the locals frequent this pub more than any other, it has to be a good sign. they also allow dogs in the bar side. however, some comments have been made prior regarding a tall builder: you can leave this over-sized chap and his lighter thievery behind, the real looker of the establishment is the tall, dark and handsome barman chris
Some of the best home-cooked pub grub ever. What better to go with well looked after real ale than a home-made pie. The landlady is a jewel and every pie coming from her busy kitchen is a pure diamond.

A fantastic pub set in the heart of the Peak District. We just had a marvelous week in Castleton and spent every evening in the best pub in the valley. Great home-made food, well kept beer and the most entertaining Landlord you'll ever meet. My wife did notice the good-looking builder that is often in the bar and thinks he said his name was Johnny.
Castleton's local pub. Good atmosphere, great beer and a real character for a landlord. Once seen and heard never forgotten. As for the tall builder propping up the bar!!!!!!
By far the best pub in Castleton - Some would say it's the only "real" pub, as it's not a refurbished mess like the others (I'm not counting the Cheshire Cheese on principal).
The landlord, Richard, is a good laugh & can always be found sitting on "Richard's chair" (purchased for him by the locals) at the end of the bar.
The staff are all friendly & the beer well looked after.

the most welcoming pub in castleton by far. find the castle to be a bit stuffy.
Fantastic pub. After a long walk it was great to find a pub with local, well kept beer (on this occasion, Blackthorn Ale from Thornbridge Hall Brewery), very good food and friendly bar staff. Ten out of ten! I will return on my next trip!

Had a fabulous week-end with Richard! Neil & Jess & Chef? You are stars, we will be back, thanks for the lovely bed, service and food. Nothing was too much trouble, it was home from home for me & my sister, not to mention our new friends Gloria & Ian from Newcastle & Barnsley. The Glayva was excellent, drinking games fun!!!! Great walks to excercise off massive breakfasts. Then return for the warm log fires and atmosphere a plenty. I am still recovering, keep the good work up, keep smiling and be happy. Love ya Jo

We stayed at this pub in may.It is under new management. We found the proprietors very welcoming, and very accommodating. The food was exceptional, the room and facilities very good.
