The George Hotel, Castleton

I can't believe that other customers have enjoyed a meal at the George. We went there on the recommendation of our B&B and had the worst night ever. I ordered some chicken and chips which was so inedible I lost my appetite after 2 mouthfuls (and I like my food..). The chips were dry, the peas overcooked and the chicken looked uncooked. Pale, dry and tepid. Not the crispy, brown, and hot chicken you expect to get on your plate. So I sent it back and didn't order anything else instead(it looked like the kind of place where the chef spits in your food if you order anything else). Sadly there was no apology and the staff made me feel like I had commited a crime by complaining, and when we came to pay they had even added the 'chicken and chips' to the bill. When we refused to pay, the waiter told us he would have to speak to the landlord and said, I quote 'I wouldn't advise that'. What had we let ourselves in for? And lo and behold, the landlord sat down and instead of apologising, accused us of trying to get a freebie like the Americans who go there (to which I retorted that I had only had 2 mouthfuls which hardly constitutes a freebie) and threatened to call the police if we didn't pay. Such bad treatment. And the man reckoned his customers are always happy and the place is packed out. Funny then, that on a Friday night the place was virtually empty at 8pm!
