The George Hotel, Castleton
I called in Sunday lunch on 15-Sep, whilst on a tour of Derbyshire.
I asked for a pint of Youngs Bitter, poured without the sparkler. The barman refused the 'sprinkler' request, saying it was house rules and made the beer look bad; he said it may be the way it was serverd down south, but not here.
There seemed to be no point in arguing with someone who didn't understand beer... I mean:
1. I am from the north
2. the beer is brewed in the south
3. the customer is always right (beer is better from the barrel, if you can get it ike that); when I worked in a pub, so long as the customer wanted the beer in a legal glass to the legal amount, and was going to pay, we served it.
On a recent tour of N Yorks, every pub was happpy to serve 'sans sparkler' as they are mostly everywhere; why does a pub have to be prescriptive on a matter of how the beer is served?
