user reviews of The Enterprise, Holborn

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Ornate Victorian pub. Great pint of Pure Ubu. We visited on a Saturday afternoon when pub pleasantly quiet and very relaxing.
Realalecat - 6 Jun 2016 17:12
The dark wood and ornate tiling are certainly an aesthetic boon for this pub just off High Holborn. Purity's Pure Ubu was in great form and made 'Non-Alignment Pact' course through my head during my brief visit. The WWI-era scale airplanes hanging from the ceiling evoke Oxford's (Jericho) Victoria, but are more than likely in homage to the major event suffered by the Dolphin Tavern opposite, in 1915. Good, but not great.
Komakino - 28 Mar 2015 13:40
There are many pubs in central London arranged this way – long, rectangular, bar on the right, toilets towards the middle and back. The Enterprise bucks the trend with a fussier, more ornate interior décor, almost of the kind you might expect to find in Madrid. There's a delightful drinking area out the back, and plenty of room generally. That all said, it's not a cheap place to drink and can often be found bursting at the seams. 7/10

This is a smart pub which on a Friday afternoon was sadly over populated with shouty office types. Which when you add the unidentifiable music "beats" being blasted out was for the benefit of whom ? (the staff i guess) made for an uncomfortable ambience. There were three ales on offer of which the UBU Purity was in perfect condition. 4 a pint though is a big ask for a beer not much more than 4% but that seems to be the going rate around here sadly. The other two ale offerings were from Sharps including the ubiquitous Doombar which seems to pop up everywhere these days, a bit like a Tesco Metro.
The menu looked interesting and the cheese boards quite tempting. But, to be honest there is nothing to differentiate this pubs from 100's of others in London and so i dont really feel any urge to go back. For ale lovers the nearby Penderel's Oak is a far better option and perhaps even better the newly opened Holborn Whippet which was far more choice at much more competative prices.
moclips2002 - 19 May 2012 11:47
Nice pub, smart and reasonably spacious. Decent range of ales (3) and reasonably priced. Probably wouldn't do a session in there but good for a couple of sharpeners.
Dylarolla - 17 Feb 2012 10:53
Nice pub architecture. Green decor goes into Yellow as you proceed down the pub. A relaxing place to while away an afternoon. 3 real ales, UBU purity being the most interesting one, beer was in 'OK' condition and a little pricey.
Abteilung - 15 Jan 2012 15:01
Nice pub with real victorian style. I like it here. Just of the beaten track enough to get a few tourists and a few locals on a saturday so there is always a good atmosphere. Plus the didn't charge a non drinker for his soda water. Bargain.
mr_mro79 - 22 Jul 2011 09:48
Visited here on the 2nd of December after a very poor visit to the Cittie of Yorke around the corner.
This is a nice pub to be in, its clean and comfortable with nice decor although looks a little less like a pub than some in the area.
It has a little courtyard at the back .
There was a selection of 3 real ales which is about normal but the price is a little over the top as I tend to draw the line at 3 a pint for ale.
May visit again if passing the door but would not go out of my way to get here when there are so many other choices around.
CambridgeBlue - 3 Oct 2010 11:42
Let's do the positives first.

Very nice inside, although they have gone a bit overboard with couches and lamps making it appear like someone's front room.

A massive plus is Addlestones Cider on draught and at 3.60 a pint it's just verging on not too pricey.

The courtyard out the back is peaceful and relaxing ... a nice spot to read the paper.

On the negetive side, it doesn't really feel like a pub, when the music being played in Classical Violin.

It could be a great pub, but for me, feels a bit too gastro/restauranty.

Having said that, the food was a sensible price, but I didn't eat.
Pat_Bateman - 16 Aug 2010 13:46
Attractive-looking pub from the street, with a bay window set between the two doorways (one of which would probably suffice, given the narrow frontage). Inside, it is light and airy near the front, with plenty of interesting features - especially the tiled and mirrored walls, some of the lighting and a rather grand bar which takes up most of one side wall. It gets rather dark as you move further in, but then lighter again towards the back in what was presumably a separate room before the interior was opened out. Three beers on handpump - Deuchars IPA, Old Hooky and a reasonable pint of Black Sheep (but a bit steep at 3.50).
rpadam - 17 Jun 2010 20:41
Just to let you know that the gents toilets have been completely refurbished. The drains have also been jetwashed and should not cause a problem again however they are over 140 years old and as such are prone to block up occasionally, short of digging up the floor there is not much I can do about them but I hope your washroom experiece will be greatly enhanced. Kind regards

Nick
ncahill - 18 May 2010 13:47
Walk to the bar and ask "Have you sorted out the bogs?" The stench of ammonia in the pub was overwhelming and a trip to the gents confirmed all suspicions. The floor was swimming in a combination of urine, bleach and a cover up disinfectant. The smell in the toilets was making people heave! I spoke to someone who allegedly was the Assistant Manager who said it happens from time to time and dont worry it wont go over the step! When I suggested that a plumber should be called what now? was the answer. I politely said no, as point of course if this happens on a regular basis! Very little interest was shown. I had the misfortune to need a leak one more time before leaving and the Manager was making some effort to mop up the Tsunami that was now threatening to take over WC2 and he mumbled some bollocks about it being a one off, clearly a pile of shit (excuse the near pun!). Any way I will continue to use the pub on a lunchtime basis as its near the office but make sure I get in early before the miniature Boscastle re-occurs!
Thespudman - 1 Apr 2010 23:09
Smallish Victorian boozer which has suffered, though not too seriously, at the hands of the gastrofiers in recent years. The narrow, bay windowed front remains quite attractive and pubby, there's still a fireplace and many of the original features remain. It goes down hill as you go further back. Even further back there's a yard for smokers. Thanks to the bare boards and overloud music it gets very noisy even when not too busy, meaning conversations become shouted. Not a relaxing experience.

Deuchers IPA, Old Hooky and Black Sheep bitter seem to be permanent fixtures judging by comments below, as does the noise level.

Pretty average then, you can find better round here.
nickdavies - 29 Jan 2010 13:01
Im not a big fan of gastro pubs, but I think that this one has been tastefully decorated in a Victorian style and is a very pleasant place to have a beer. There isnt that big a choice on the draught front with Carling and three premium lagers along with Addlestones and my trusty Guinness which was well served by a very friendly barmaid (that chat that the owner had with the staff must have worked, although I cannot comment as this visit was my first). There are also three hand pumps which were pouring Black Sheep, Deuchars and Old Hooky about three weeks ago.

The music was a bit loud for my liking, but there were a lot of young drunk woman at the rear of this long pub that seemed to be enjoying it so who am I to complain!

As I mentioned before, this isnt really my sort of place, but I have friends that would like it in here and I would recommend it to them.
Strongers - 23 Dec 2009 21:38
Hi my name is Nick and I am the owner of The Enterprise. I would like to apologise to the last few reviewers for the experiences that they have had at the pub. I have been away for a bit and unfortunately did not realise that we had such a problem. I have had a meeting with the managers and staff and have hopefully resolved these issues in particular the 'Friendly' one. I do take the reviews on this site very seriously and hope that anyone who visits from now on will have a very pleasant experience however if they dont I would be very happy to hear about it. Apologies once again for this unfortunate and uncharacteristic lapse. Kind regards Nick
ncahill - 16 Aug 2009 16:09
I've been drinking in here for a couple of years now on and off and I've got to agree that it's not that great anymore. The staff are so moody, there's a big guy behind the bar who has obviously forgotten how to smile and several female staff who seem to have attitude defects of some kind, just rubbish service, not enticing, not friendly. In my oppinion service makes a place, you can throw up as many cherubs and cool pics as you like, but with that kind of service, it's worth nothing.

I've always enjoyed the loud music and party atmosphere within the fantastic interior but something's changed and I deffinately wont be returning, or recommending this pub any time soon.
architype2 - 7 Aug 2009 12:18
Staff need to learn how to smile and be pleasant..... Otherwise just going to turn away customers
jonbarratt - 15 May 2009 09:25
not my cup of tea.....
jennymiddleton99 - 11 May 2009 20:55
Went there purely on the rating from this site. Closed to the public on a Saturday night? Shouldn't have deviated from The Harp...
T_G - 10 May 2009 03:09
I have been here a few times and most visits dissapointed.

First time was on a weekday evening and found it understaffed for demand and the music too loud to hear myself, Tables and chairs all over the place and hardly a dry spot on the bar....

The second time i went was with my girlfriend for lunch, one girl and manager on duty, the girl was rude, did not seem that she wanted to even be there, no eye contact and messed our food order up - supprising as it was 2 sandwiches - instead of the fish finger and club, we recieved a ploughmans and a cremated fish finger sandwich. Wont be returning unless staff pick up their ideas......
rex_edwards - 6 May 2009 16:22
Knowing how busy pubs in London can be on a Friday evening we reserved an area in this pub to at least be able to talk to each other. We stated it was for eight people and were advised this would be no problem. On arrival we found we had a table and four chairs put aside in a small area to the rear of the pub. We were also surrounded by other tables with four chairs also reserved for other people. When the manager was spoken to re the other chairs he just said that four was all they could do because it is busy on Fridays. He made no effort to resolve the situation and displayed a "did not care" type of attitude. It transpired at least 3 surrounding tables had all asked for larger parties than they had chairs for. This area is also located next to the Toilets and coupled with the fact that no consideration had been given to numbers led to a thoroughly miserable and outrageously overcrowded evening. Obviously we could have just left (and we did when everyone arrived) but due to the staggered arrival times of our friends and presented with the fact we stood no chance of getting a table elsewhere. My friends and I will not return.
Beerkeg100 - 11 Feb 2009 18:47
Just an observation: after the management comment, there were suddenly five extremely positive reviews within two days, all by people who have only reviewed this pub. That's just enough to push the negative reviews off the main page.

You might want to click through for a more balanced impression.
ribat - 11 Jan 2009 11:34
Shirley thought it was a very attractive place. I found it expensive but ok
becks007 - 31 Dec 2008 15:15

A really classy pub. I can only agree about the staff being amazingly friendly and open. I don't know about the food yet but the pint is always tasty! :)

Dear camraman123, Im sorry to read about your recent experience at the Enterprise, after reading your comments on other pubs in Holborn it would appear you didnt have good evening at all. I cant speak for the other pubs, however if you would like to contact me regarding the service in the Enterprise, I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the matter further. I am always looking to improve our service further.

Regards,

Nigel

Nigel123 - 25 Nov 2008 15:19
Looks spectacular, the frontage and colours are class. Its very well lit, so inviting. But if you go in you'll realise its shite. If i wanted to be insulted whilst spending money I'd get the tube.
camraman123 - 24 Nov 2008 01:57
I've been going to the Enterprise since it was re-vamped and under new management. I love it! The bar staff are always friendly and eager to serve. I've never had a bad pint! In fact a group of us were there last night to celebrate a colleagues impending marriage. We were a little riotous but the bar staff were amazing! The service was great. Food Excellent. The smoking area at the back is fantastic and so rare in a central London pub. I highly recommend that you go there!
Azra - 21 Nov 2008 12:44
I was talking to my college at work and they said I should see the beer in the evening review site and see what some people were saying about my favourite pub in Holborn. I was horrified. Therefore I thought I would say something about this place as a pub that I love going to and have for a number of years.

They seem to have a good sense in the mood of the people. If you go in early in the week then the music is subdued (for when we have to work the rest of the week) and on Friday when we want to let your hair down then The Enterprise is the place to go. (If you do not want to let your hair down I suggest that you should go to a number of pubs in the area that do not play music. (e.g. A Weatherspoon or home).

When I go there I do like a drop or two of red wine and unlike andrea01 I am not a big red wine drinker however the pub has a nice range of wine (my favourite is the Rioja). I have never tied the house red wine and therefore could not comment on this but with a very nice wine list why bother! (unless you are a cheapskate).

With regards to beer I am not an expert but the guys that I work with do find that the bitter that they serve are good and they tell me that the pints are good with the right amount of head (I not sure that they are kidding with me sometimes!)

Sometimes you go in there on Thursday/Friday night and think that you are never going to get served because the bar is busy, but always somebody from the staff asks Are you being served over the head of the people in front of you, and therefore the management have the right amount of staff for right day, in my opinion.

sfiles - 18 Nov 2008 23:11
Hi andrea01, moderate nige and steve cole. I was very sorry to see your reviews and I apologise for your experiences, We have reviewed the way we do things now and I hope that if you ever visit again, which I hope some day you will, that you will not have the same experience. I do take a lot of pride in the fact that the service here is usually excellent but am grateful that you have bought these matters to my attention. kind regards. Nick
llihkcin - 18 Nov 2008 18:11
After reading the reviews below, it appears I am not the only one who couldn't believe the cheek and rudeness of the bar man (late thirties/ early forties, balding, slim). I used to go in this pub when I was a bar school down the road, and it was a pretty good pub with potential to do a bit better. I heard it was taken over by new management a couple of years ago, and so decided to go back last week as I was in the area and feeling nostalgic. But I wish I hadn't. I had a glass of house red, which, when I took a sip, immediately thought, 'yuk, this tastes so acidic'. I am a big red wine drinker, and know what a disgusting glass of wine tastes like. At this point the pub still had a chance to redeem itself, by dealing with my complaint appropriately. So I took it back to the bar and told the aforementioned bar man it tasted horrible. He looked at me blankly, took the glass out of my hand, stuck a straw in it, pulled it out, dropped it into his mouth, shook his head, and said "this is a cabernet-merlot, that's what it's suppoed to taste like". Arrogant sod. Huh, hum, but NO IT'S NOT! So I asked if I could have a different wine and pay the difference. His response? "Yes, sure, if you want to but a whole new glass of wine". The cheek of the man. What ever happened to customer service? Appears it by-passed this man altogether. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT GOOD SERVICE. Oh yeah, and the music was alright, but WAY too loud (night club style).
andrea01 - 8 Nov 2008 17:18
Deuchars IPA, Landlord and Black Sheep Bitter on. The Landlord was 3.30 a pint, which is a bit steep for this area. Now floor-boarded throughout, but still retaining what appears to some original Victorian tiling along one wall. The two large models of Great War bi-planes suspended from the ceiling appeared somewhat incongruous in a pub that clearly has gastro-pub aspirations (buffalo mozzarella, ripe vine tomatoes, fresh basil and Tuscany olive oil in a granary baguette = cheese and tomato roll). But who really cares? It has been tastefully decorated, is quite comfortable, and is a decent enough pub if you dont mind the prices. They even have a few seats outside at the back for smokers.
RexRattus - 10 Oct 2008 21:34
Lovely Pub- Decent grub. lovely drop of Black, we'll be back. Outside yard, is the real trump card.
PaulMeoff - 17 Jul 2008 15:43
Should be a good pub but it aint. I was overjoyed when I saw Black Sheep on tap. But sadly the barman tried to get away with topping up a pint glas that had been sitting there. A cardinal sin! To make matters worse he tried to justify himself
stevecole - 24 Jun 2008 18:46
I'm liking this pub more and more. Staff are friendly, food is OK although the beer is a bit hit and miss which really lets it down. Good hide away from the office.
little_alec - 6 Jan 2008 15:07
The last time I came in here was prior to the recent refurbishment. The basics were intact but the place was rather tatty with worn seats and a rather tired feel. The sympathetic refurbishment has given the place a modern trendy buzz without ruining the historic ambience. The elegant main bar area has a dark and rich feel to it and features some superb Victorian tiling, large mirrors and a fireplace with an ornate wooden surround. The pub narrows to the rear where the dcor is a bit lighter and doubles up as a photo gallery. A couple of model WWI biplanes dangle overhead between a couple of coloured glass skylights and at the rear a small, bright, open courtyard is ideal for the nice weather that we frequently enjoy! The beers (Black Sheep, Old Hooky and 1 off Pride looking at the shape of the clip) are well kept (they are cask marquee accredited) although you will experience the steeper end of London prices. The ambience is generally relaxed with easy going music and when it isnt too busy, it is a great place to while away a few hours. Definitely recommended if in his area.
RogerB - 1 Aug 2007 12:46
The decor is very nice, spot on, not too tarty.

They have a little sun trap out the back, but if you want to get a seat out there this summer you will have to be there about five o clock to beat the office rush.

Good place for a lunchtime beer. The food is nice, the beer is good and the barmaids are spot on.

My current favourite Holborn watering hole.
Mathew26 - 15 Jun 2007 14:09
The ale was good Old Hookey and Deuchars IPA although very busy for a Tuesday and nowhere to perch inside other than by the bar. As such, we were forced out onto the street like dogs.

When I went, it seemed to be full of Hooray Henry students, which wasnt too appealing.

Even so, a pretty decent place and a solid six, assuming Im not standing in the street engulfed by the posh unwashed.
AleKing - 24 May 2007 16:55
Visited on Saturday 17th Feb. Hook Norton Old Hookey was in great nick. The other two beers available were London Pride and Deuchars IPA.

No intrusive music on my visit and the staff were pleasant and efficient.

As many other posters have pointed out, the refurb is pretty good and hasn't devastated the old victoriana.

Hope to visit again late March.
johnkn7 - 23 Feb 2007 16:55
I have to agree with wordhard. Nice enough pub outside and in, but even when you expect a busy, noisy pub on a Friday, this was way too much.

I have never been in a pub where the music was that loud (or that bad actually: Tina Turner, Take That, not sure what else - I ended up standing outside in freezing December just to hear someone talking). It's nightclub volume, yet the punters seem to put up with it (though most are office-types drinking alcopops and lager).

When will pubs realise most customers are there to drink and either chat, or have a quiet read etc. Not listen to your appallng music.

(Before you dismiss this as the whinging of an old man, I'm under 30 and work in music).
ChapmanBaxter - 17 Jan 2007 21:02
Agree with the refurb comment.Yres,it looks contempary, but retains the victorian look of a city of London pub.Guinness superb, service very good(and with a smile)Crowded, but a fun type ,wind down on a friday type crowd.A good pub, would definatly go back.
tottenhamsean - 4 Nov 2006 10:23
I hadn't been to the Enterprise for a while and, whilst I generally loathe refurbs, I must say they've done a top job. They have an evening tapas type menu which looked appealing and we had a very relaxing evening. However I returned two nights later and it was a completely different atmosphere with some sort of annoyingly loud dance music and full of city types falling over (to be strictly fair I only witnessed one calamity but we left early, tired of the shouting). Seems to depend what part of the week you visit to what kind of evening you'll have. Overall though, good service, good beer and plesent surroundings.
eddieframpton - 1 Oct 2006 10:28
Visited The Enterprise for the first time last week, on the strength of the reviews in BITE. Really, REALLY good pint of Broadside, decor impressive, atmosphere welcoming despite the lack of lighting and staff charming. Seems to be very popular with couples.

But why the DEAFENINGLY LOUD music? Fair play, by sitting inside but as far from the bar as possible, my friend and I could just about hear each other talk (loudly) but it wasn't condusive to conversation.
workhard - 4 Sep 2006 13:37
I went in this pub for the first time in about 6 months last Tuesday and I was stunned at the changes. It has been beautifully done up with the victorian features kept instead of being ripped out like they seem to be in old pubs these days. It has a wonderful cosy atmosphere and makes a nice change from all the bland looking gastro pubs with their modern usually uncomfortable furniture, which all look the same and seem to be springing up everywhere. I found the Victorian features quite stunning especially the old tiles and ceiling lamps. It was a lovely hot day and sitting out in the garden was a real treat. I like the small fountain on the wall. I felt like I was on holiday sitting out there. The owner was extremely pleasant as were the staff. Also as a woman on my own I felt very comfortable going in there. The wine was tasty as well. I really think this pub deserves 10 out of 10. It has been very lovingly restored and it shows. I will most certainly be going back there again many times! In fact next time I will try the food.
Alex6 - 14 Jul 2006 22:05
Refurb has been very sympathetic and brings the best out of the place. All the victorian features are there - the place is just a lot cleaner.

Perfect pint of Adnams Broadside. Nice landlord. Classical music created a nice atmosphere on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
anonymous - 27 May 2006 21:14
I wouldn't have thought so Stonch, as I believe the pubs you mentioned are managed houses, whereas following the change from managed to franchise, M&B are no longer the driving force behind the direction of the business. The new host is.

The thing to bear in mind is that pub franchises are completely different from fast food & high st. retail franchises. They are not uniform. It's only really in terms of the office side of things that there's any involvement with the company.

It's not my place to say what Nick may or may not do, as I no longer work there. Having met the man though, I'm confident that any changes he might make will benefit, rather than detract, from the pub and its character & atmosphere.

James_Enterprise - 6 Apr 2006 18:21
OK. I am quite a fan of certain Mitchells & Butlers pubs - the Crown Tavern (Clerkenwell), the Castle (Farringdon), the Island Queen (Islington), the Eagle (City Road) and the Crown & Sceptre (Fitzrovia) are all favourites of mine. Will the Enterprise be receiving the same kind of "shabby chic" make-over as those pubs? Not sure if that would be appropriate.
anonymous - 6 Apr 2006 17:17
Mitchells & Butlers. Don't worry about this changeover impacting on the atmosphere though. It won't become more chain-like, in fact this is good news for the pub because Nick, the new host, has total autonomy in how how he does things. For example, it is his choice as a franchisee which ales he offers in the future, whereas as a manager, I was told what to offer.
James_Enterprise - 6 Apr 2006 15:41
A franchise of what pubco exactly?
anonymous - 3 Apr 2006 08:30
Last week the pub changed hands. It will now be run as a franchise operation. That means the new host will be able to operate as he sees fit, rather than having to follow a rigid set of guidelines.

Thanks and farewell to you all.
James_Enterprise - 3 Apr 2006 03:35
Yes, unfortunately that's exactly the case Stonch. For example, Hen will be replaced with Bombardier shortly after the 15th, and I have no say in the matter. The reason for it being so tightly controlled is that we are not only a managed house, but branded too.

If it were my choice, I'd have Adnams as the house ale, and two regularly changing guest ales, one weak and one strong. I'd also stock one or two bottled ales at times, from the Shepherd Neame's Christmas variety for example.

Afraid the best I can do is to ensure the quality of what I am given, and try to have all three on without significant downtime. Others have said to me what you have, and I'll pass the feedback on in the hope it might cause a ripple in the corporate pond.
James_Enterprise - 10 Mar 2006 01:01
Hi James. Out of interest, when you say you can only offer guest ales in accordance with your pubco owners, do you mean they tell you specifically what beer you are getting and you have no say? I thought that publicans were generall given a beer list and some guidelines but as long as they chose a good rotation from that list they were ok?

If this isn't true, it should be! Not your fault obviously, but I do think having "guest ales" like Bombardier and Old Speckled Hen which are unexciting and very widely available is not a good way of providing customer choice or getting more people into drinking real ale.

Surely a better strategy is to do what, for example, the Island Queen in Issy does - have on TT Landlord and Pride as standards, but usually have something very unusual as the guest ale - Blackadder stout last time I was in, a very welcome discover for me.

Just my view obviously but interested to hear from a publican like yourself what the policy is.

Cheers.
anonymous - 9 Mar 2006 15:10
Stonch, we now have Speckled Hen as an alternative. This is part of a year-long guest ale plan the brand recently decided on. As I understand it, we'll have a new one every two months. I'll see if I can find out what the next ones are, and in what order they'll arrive. (I have a feeling it'll be Bombardier next, but I'm not certain.) Afraid I'm not allowed to offer any ales other than in compliance with their plan though, sorry.

Update on the lighting: no luck finding the mantles, but I've heard murmurs about replacing the gas lights with electrical replicas sometime later in the year as part of a small tidy-up.

James_Enterprise - 21 Feb 2006 00:45
Nice locals pubs. Friendly and service was excellent. Pub you wouldn't mind to live next door too.
TheHorsesMouth - 16 Feb 2006 14:16
James, any chance of having Adnams Broadside along with the bitter? Its a great beer that always seems to sell well in pubs that have it. Although I am sure you keep both your cask ales perfectly, at the best of times Pride and Adnams bitter are rather bland.
anonymous - 6 Feb 2006 14:49
Thanks for your kind comments George and John.

I agree that the walls are in need of work. I'll have a word with my boss, see if we can sort out something in the near future. The lighting should, in principle, be easier to address. I've been trying to source some mantles which our out-of-service gas wall lights need. (They safely contain the naked flames, and also prevent the glass shades from cracking due to overheating.) That is the reason the rear half of the pub has been dim in recent weeks. I was recently informed of a company that supposedly sells them though, and I'm hoping to get hold of some by the end of the coming week.
James_Enterprise - 1 Jan 2006 14:05
James, you're doing a cracking job so far - The Enterprise is used by my firm as its watering hole, and slowly you're luring back the drinkers who headed to the Old Nick.

The whole atmosphere of the pub seems so much brighter after the previous cretins behing the bar departed. The service now is far more cheery and efficient, and devoid of extremist rantings from previous, oh-so pleasant barman. The Adnams is great, and I now look forward to heading to the Starship after work.

A lick of paint and some better lighting would be great though, if you're making any headway in your battle to improve the feel of the pub.

Quite a pleasant visit yesterday evening for just the one pint after work.

Nice ornate bar back and wall tiling, which is always a plus with an old school traditionalist like me.

There were several large Xmas party office groups in the pub - but they were fairly civilised. This pub is much bigger than The Dolphin over the road, which is also worth a visit.

Yes, I'll definitely pop in again when I'm next in the area

Forgot to mention that we are no longer part of the Nicholsons chain as it says above; we are now part of London Pubs, which is a more subtle brand, better-suited to this type of pub.

Hello I'm James, the current host of The Enterprise. If you have any questions please ask.

In response to the previous comments, we have not had fruit machines for over a year. We have a SWP quiz machine, but it is kept in an unobtrusive corner and it does not emit sound.

Our current selection of ales consists of Adnams and London Pride. I am pushing for a third, rotating guest ale, but am currently meeting resistance (this is a managed house). Both ales have the Cask Marque mark of excellence, and I was trained in cellar management by Fullers of Chiswick.

The pub is indeed closed on weekends, because the bulk of our trade comes from people working in the area. We are willing however, to open on the weekends for private parties.

We provide the pub to your group of friends/colleagues exclusively for a Saturday or Sunday evening, free of charge. We ask only that you guarantee a minimum of fifty people. We will be able to provide 12 o'clock closing automatically for these events after 24th November, and would be willing to consider applications for later closing depending on the circumstances.

There is still much to be done to allow this pub to reach its full potential, and I am trying to achieve as much as I can, despite it being the age-old uphill struggle of manager vs company.

Used to be run by a (plainly open about his political views) neo-Nazi, nicknamed Gollum. As such, you would expect brutally efficient service, but that was never to be.

Now it appears to be run by a much more genial, if ponderous chap, who's doing well at regaining disillusioned ex-customers. The place has also been cleaned up, although the fruit machines remain. Can get very crowded in the evenings, what with the law schools and barristers turfing out. Couple of good beers, notably the Sussex.

Fairly cosy but unsurprising Central London pub which serves the ubiquitous London Pride and Bass. It was either this one or the Dolphin opposite that was hit by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin in WW1.
