Refurbished at considerable cost since the last review and now looks much more like a classy hotel than the slightly shabby mishmash that it once was. The Ludlow Best was in fine order on Boxing Day and the restaurant food was equally as good.

Discovered really good selection of ales here. Ludlow Brewery Best and Stairway, Hobsons Twisted Spire and Old Prickly. Well kept. Service was also good. Taster and advice given.
|
Went for a drink in what is obviously a newly-fitted bar in an ancient hotel. Three real ales on offer from the Ludlow stable: Best, Boiling Well and Old Prickly. Don't usually like blonde beers but the last-named was uncharacteristically sweet and very palatable. The barmaid was very polite but reminded me of nothing so much as a hotel receptionist in her starchy efficiency. This impression was enhanced by the large couches that would not have been out of place in a hotel foyer. So, nothing wrong with it but I prefer earthier surroundings.

For beer, quite simply one of the best.
Staff attentive and helpful.

Having seen all the recent activity on here, it was an ideal opportunity to have a look yesterday whist visiting Ludlow for the Spring Festival. What is most annoying is the pathetic attempts being made recently by some to manipulate the system, especially when it's quite clear that they've never been! Stop being idiots. Decent enough bar (yer it's a hotel, so what get over it!), the barman was very helpful and attentive - even offered a free taste of the ale so I could make a choice! Also offered an ale bat 3x1/3 pint. Great to see a relaxed atmosphere - no tv or thumping music just a good choice of well kept REAL ALE! The food was excellent - the quality of the meat a real surprise - delicious. Just wish I had eaten less through the day so I could have sampled more on the menu! Well done folks. Word of advice to some people on here, visit a place before you post a comment, otherwise keep quiet.

I'm sorry to see what's apparently going on here with the reviews. I thought the place was decent enough, the beer was on good form, and it doesn't need apparently non-genuine ones. Whether some of these are "false flag" postings by rivals is equally hard to say. It just happens from time to time on this site but does no one any favours. The missus and I were looking forward to an overnight at the Feathers a few weeks ago, but alas it hadn't a double room left. We'll certainly try again next time we're this way though.
|
There's only one person who can give this place a decent review step forward arsenal fan 36.
|
The fact that most of bogus reviews have used to same double spacing strongly suggests that they have all been posted by the same person, almost certainly the owner / manager. They are all written to the same format too.
|
The next time I am in Ludlow I will walk into this pub, fart and then leave without buying a drink. I would urge other people to do the same.
|
Shameful manipulation of scores by the owner. My 0/10 should redress the balance abit :)
|
Two reviews at an unearthly hour this morning from two new reviewers registered only yesterday. Coincidence or what? The ratings for the Feathers obviously have to be ignored. If I lived closer I would check the place out for myself to see how good it really is but it doesn't justify a 2 hour drive.

We found the Feathers to be a great bar with fine surroundings.
The beers from the local Ludlow brewery were of superb quality in very good condition. Really well kept beer.
Service was very good. Nothing was too much trouble. The staff were really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
We will definitely return again.
|
What a great find. We were very impressed with the Feathers it was a beautiful old timbered inn.
The service was first class and the food was excellent quality and expertly prepared.
My pint of Boiling Well was probably one of the best I have sampled.
|
We called in on Friday evening. Liked the place, really enjoyed the beer, and got good service. No axe to grind. No manipulation. Genuinely!
|
This is a great bar serving terrific quality real ales. Called in on Friday for pre-dinner drinks. The beer was on format, especially the Ludlow Best and Hobsons Old Prickly. We kept, good flavour, excellent clarity. 10/10.
We liked the relaxed atmosphere and surroundings, plus the pleasure of no damned background music!
Great beer and staff who know how to keep a good beer. We'll be back next time we're in Ludlow.

I completely fail to understand why so many people apparently think this place is wonderful. For a start THIS PLACE IS NOT A PUB ! It’s an upmarket cafe-bar attached to a hotel. [not that that disqualifies it from BITE ] So, why do people rave about it ?
Is it the building ? Well the hotel is magnificent, but unfortunately the bar is actually in the plain Georgian building to the right.
Is it the range of beer ? Well there were only three beers available when I was there.
Is it the beer quality ? I had the Hobsons Old Prickly, and this was reasonable enough, but nothing special. [ To be fair they have won awards for beer quality ]
Is it the atmosphere ? Hard to see it – it’s a bit genteel for my liking. It took me two visits to get served, because the first time there weren’t any vacant tables, and drinking standing up / at the bar is not encouraged. When I did find an empty table, I noticed that most people were only drinking soft drinks or halves.
Is it the food ? Well I didn’t eat there, but my fellow diners weren’t so keen on it to eat every last mouthful !
To sum it up, whilst this place is Ok, I went to 5 pubs in Ludlow, and this place was definitely NOT in the top 3 !
5/10 – adequate but nothing more.
|
I honestly cannot see why this is currently rated as the top pub in Britain – and by such a large margin. In my book, it is NOT even the best pub in Ludlow, never mind the rest of the UK.
Yes, the frontage of the main building is architecturally outstanding, but the bar is located in the plainer building next door. The bar itself is clean and comfortable, but beyond that, it NOTHING special. The same goes for the beers. I tried two out of the three beers - a pint of Hobson's Old Prickly and a pint of Ludlow Boiling Well, which were both OK, but not outstanding. This is just a VERY average pub, which for some reason seems to be being over hyped … 6.5/10 would be a more accurate score.
|
Heard and seen things, and it's an example of not believing everything you read or hear.
Great beer, great craic and friendly service.
Yes, it's not a conventional pub, but it's alright. No irritating background entertainment, idiot free, and relaxed feel.
Here and Brewery Tap served by far the best beer we found in Ludlow. Also, despite being a hotel prices here were keen.
Agree, this is surprisingly good!
|
Wasn't sure what to expect. 5 guys after beer and this place?
Pleasant surprise. The guy behind the bar was welcoming. Have to say, nice place.
Three pulls. Best beer we found in Ludlow.
Told they try to serve only local ales. The Hobsons Old Prickly was perfect. Nice mix of locals and fellow tourists.
Beers on offer on our visit, Ludlow brewery Best and Boiling Well and the Hobsons. One of use tried the Feather bat, 3 beers for £3.20. Brilliant!
|
I visited the Feathers today whilst in Ludlow on business. Having never been to Ludlow before, it seemed obvious to call in.
Outside the facade is amazing, real history. Inside the old part of the building is pure history, lots of timber and lots of atmosphere.
Unfortunately the bar is newer, but pleasant enough. No irritating telly or background music to contend with.
The Feathers provide a good location to meet with a client. Good coffee and biscuits, followed later by a pint and sandwiches. Three ales were on sale, the Hobsons Old Prickly proving very good, at reasonable at £3.20 a pint.
Decent service certainly concluded a good experience. 10/10.
|
Was very busy when I was there on a Saturday evening. Real ales on, including Ludlow Boiling Well and Best. Boiling Well - tasty, strong, well-rounded beer 9/10. Staff extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. This place is a must.
A really nice pub with friendly staff. Will definitely return when in Ludlow next.
|
The amount of effort that has gone into all these eerily similar reviews (including the ones for all the other pubs in the fake profiles) is quite astounding! I'm genuinely impressed...
|
Now I'd say one of the best places in Ludlow for a pint. Ales from the Ludlow brewery and Hobsons available. Well kept and in very good condition. Lovely pale ale from Hobsons called Old Prickly. Nice relaxing surroundings, good service.
Here and the Ludlow Brewery are becoming the two places in town for real ale.
|
We found the Feathers great. Nice bar with a great open log fire!
Three beers (proudly promoted as all local) and really good. We tried the Hobsons Old Prickly first, and would say it was the best we'd had in Ludlow. We decided to also try the Ludlow Boiling Well, and again were impressed. Really well kept beer.
Service was friendly and it appears someone here is making an effort with the beer.
|
By far the best beer we found in Ludlow.
Bar is clean, tidy and comfortable. Service the evening was good - friendly and informative.
Three ales tried - Ludlow Best, Ludlow Boiling Well and Hobsons Old Prickly. ALL served at good temp, excellent clarity, and in good condition.
Very impressed. Definitely recommend.
|
More of a smart coffee shop / bar on the right hand side, but we took our beers through to the more atmospheric Hotel lounge which is very nice.
Still the 3 ales mentioned below, Hobsons Old Prickly 4.2% pale ale (5p out of every pint goes to the BHPS; British Hedgehog Preservation Society) along with Ludlow Brewing Co. (Best and Boiling Well).
Definitely recommended.
|
Very impressed.
3 ale, from Hobsons (Old Prickly - delicious pale ale) and Ludlow Brewing Co. (Best and Boiling Well).
Beer served at good temp, nice condition and clarity best seen in town.
Service good, pleasant bar and surroundings.
Will be back for more!
|
Group of us visited Ludlow for the first time. Hotel bar is pleasant and has a lovely courtyard terrace.
Surprised to find 3 local ales, all excellent (Hobsons Old Prickly 4.2% being best pint of the day). Prices good and very friendly service.
Recommend a visit.
|
Relaxing comfortable atmosphere. Beer really good. Boiling Well (Ludlow Brewing Co) excellent. Good service. Would recommend.
|
Good beer. Nice surprise. Don't be put off it being an Hotel.
|
Good beers, especially enjoyed the Hobsons Old Prickly, a surprising gem. Friendly staff, comfortable bar/lounge (great open fire!). Definitely will call again. Worth a visit.
|
Visiting Ludlow for first time on business, following BITE reviews tried the Feathers.
As a bar to an hotel, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it really fits as a both. Found the bar staff friendly (and helpful on local knowledge!). The ale excellent, and well kept. The surroundings very pleasant (if a little tired and aged).
Would definitely include in a visit.
|
Warm friendly welcome at the bar. Very comfortable and relaxed. Only three ale, but told all are local, and we found them excellent. Didn't eat here but food looked good. Didn't know Ludlow so thanks to BITE reviewers we found the place.
|
Seeing the Feathers reviews on here, decided to give it a try. What an amazing building! Sitting drinking pints of good ale around the log fire on a cold wet day... perfect. We tried all three ale and found them all very palatable. Friendly service, fantastic building, good beer.
|
Very pleasant, lots of history and character. Three local ale (all sampled!) good and well kept. For a hotel, found beer prices competitive. Friendly bar staff. Woold recommend a visit.
|
Revisited this weekend. Standby what we found last time, very good well kept ales and friendly staff. Worth including in any visit to the town.
|
For an insight into the reasoning for my concerns, see the thread for the Volunteer Riflemans Arms in Bath (another good pub), and what happened there.
As I say, the Feathers is fine, and so are other places in Ludlow.
|
Seeing reviews on BITE we visited to sample the Feathers.
Warm, friendly welcome. 3 ale available. Tasters offered. Service good. All ale well kept and served.
In a nutshell previous positive posts seem fair and right. To be honest, the Feathers has been the best experience for us this weekend.
Beer prices are OK, but even better for us they have recently dropped them as part of an event!
Worth a visit.

Visiting another Hotel and reviewing it today, remindeed me of my visit to The Feathers. Just checking the posts, good to see others find this bar good. Don't be put off by the "Hotel" tag ( or comments about posts made), as far as Im concerned its well worth a visit.
|
Visiting Ludlow for the weekend, couldn't help but notice the posts about The Feathers. Having now tried a reasonable number of places in the town it was interesting to see how well this bar was reviewed (except for the last post?).
All I can say is that I have to agree 100% with the comments previously made. Whilst it is a hotel, and slightly more expensive (not much), it is a perfectly good venue, and in my opinion excellent.
To be honest, during this weekend I have experienced ale from poor to average to good. The Feathers prove to be very good.
I don't really understand the point of the previous post. The Feathers should be celebrated for what they're offering.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to another weekend away in Ludlow at some point.
|
I note that most of the other posts here are single-hitters, or either Ludlow-only with an unfavourable review of another place.
The Feathers is a perfectly good venue, and does not need what sometimes happens on this site.
I'd keep an open mind, as to how it might compare with some of its celebrated rivals mentioned in other reviews though.

Three of us having been walking in the area for the first time, decided to visit this famous hotel for a very enjoyable lunch stop. Ludlow Best, Boiling Well (an ale the bar recently won with at the Food Festival Ale award) and Hobsons Twisted Spire were all tried by various members of the party and all declared very fine. The food was as good and service friendly. Marvellous place.
|
Called in during the Ludlow Food Festival weekend. Very busy, but received good service and the beer was excellent. Taking part in the Festival Ale Trail it was by far the best beer sampled. Hope to come back to Ludlow and The Feathers at a quieter time.
|
Pleasantly surprised by The Feather’s. The place is very comfortable and inviting with friendly staff, whilst the beers are well kept, Ludlow “Boiling Well”, Hobsons ”Twisted Spire”, Ludlow “Best” and Ludlow “Gold”. The food in the bar looked fabulous! They also have a nice enclosed courtyard garden. Definitely worth a visit.
|
Great place to go for a relaxing pint. Real ales all seem local, and well kept. Good service and bar menu.
|
Fantastic building. On visiting the Bar, I discovered they offer three well kept local real ales (if you like real ale it's well worth a visit!) as well as local cider, wine by the glass or bottle etc. The Bar menu offers great choice and value with something for everyone.
|
The ancient facade of this hotel/restaurant/pub supports a large modern extension at the rear, but is fascinating nonetheless.
It's something of a gastronomic destination. As I recall the drinks prices were typical of those in a hotel bar rather than a pub.
