This pub is now called The Stage door... Its probably had a makeover since its buccaneer days, but whatever they've done it certainly works, as we found this a cracking pub with top notch beer. It's located in a lovely building next to Devonshire park and the famous tennis club.. You get great views of the courts from the bar. Beers were excellent, Longman long blonde and my favourite Rising giant. Also Harvey's beers, all kept well.

I've had many a good pint and chat here over the years, but it's perhaps best avoided when there's a tennis tournament on.

Friendly barman who lets us try some of the ales. Beer was good so was the atmospere. Very nice building from the outside.
The very big downpoint were the toilets. The toilets were infested by mould. Renovate the toilets and the pub would be a star in Eastbourne...

Agree a fantastic pub selling great beer. Mixture of locals, and visitors to nearby Winter Gardens and Theatre. Food available during day, and 5 real ales on offer when I visited including Buccaneer, Rev.James, and Harveys Sussex. Landlord knew his stuff and was happy to discuss beers and allow a sample before buying.

Well what a find! Wonderful and helpful bar man, good beer and good food, what more can a Sloven ask for?

Nice enough pub near Devonshire Park. Lots of interesting playbills on the walls but on a really hot day the beer not up to snuff. Maybe just unlucky.
|
Very ornate exterior from late 1800s, leading into a spacious and incredibly friendly pub. The barman was very knowledgeable about the Sussex beer scene and happy to chat about beers past, present and future - sharing a printed tasting notes guide that gets updated regularly. Both the Buccaneer Ale and the Harveys Sussex Best were in excellent condition, and we were assured that all 5 of the pumps are in use during busier months.

One of only a few DOG FRIENDLY pubs in Eastbourne. Glad to see they were doing a roaring lunchtime trade yesterday. Their Buccaneer ale was in very good nick too.
|
Last orders at 1045 on a Friday? Several local cask ales, particularly Arundel beers, available and in good form.
|
It was all pretty good until the staff of the local theatre turned up at 10pm and demanded karaoke. The novelty of these camp youngsters fighting to sing the next song off key wore off pretty quickly. The manager apologised about them as we left which at least put a smile on my face.

Good size, attractive building and part of the Orchid Group of pubs. Quite busy lunch time trade with a friendly vibe. There were four real ales on offer: Midsummer Madness, Bass, Doombar and Harvey's Sussex - I tried the Midsumer Madness and had a pint of Bass: unfortunately neither was in good condition. Seems like yet another pubco that's forgotten about the beer. Shame.

Well situated for theatre goers, and certainly a much better bet than the theatre bars fro pre entertainment drinks or (if you're quick) for interval refreshment. Also seems a pretty decent pub in itself. Only 2 ales on offer, but it seems there are usually more.

Wonderful atmosphere. Pint of Rev.James as good as you will get anywhere. Very good pub indeed with great staff. A must visit in eastbourne.

This pub is located next door to the Winter Gardens. The lounge looks small at first but extends well past the bar. Seating is reasonably comfortable with a good range of real ales including a Buccaneer Ale. It has a good atmosphere and is weel worth a visit.

Visited twice early July 2010, hoping the 1st visit was a 1 off bad beer day. Unfortunately it wasn't. !st visit had a pint of Bucaneer, hell if a pub sells a beer with its own name it's got to be good hasn't it? You would think so but in this case you would be wrong, it was cloudy and sour. 2nd visit decided to have a pt of Black Sheep, well it tasted good in Masham Yorks, but again it was sour. What was the problem, was it a warm cellar (it was hot week), dirty pipes, maybe the beers were past there sell by dates, or before there sell by date, or sold before they were settled. Who knows, but this is an ex customer.
The music and ambience were good though and the one meal we had was reasonable,

The Buccaneer is an open and friendly place with a good choice of food and an excellent choice of well-stored and well-served real ales - normally a choice of four or five at any one time. Nestled between the Devonshire Park Theatre and the Wintergarden Complex, and set back one road from the Seafront, the Buccaneer is a good place to meet. Although there is no terrace to sit on in Summer Days (front or back), the back of the pub has a gorgeous view over the Devonshire Park (and the Tennis Court Centre made world famous for its Ladies Tennis Tournament) and gets an astounding amount of sun hours. It's also a pub free of rough elements, so you'll feel safe and comfortable if visiting, and you'll feel very welcome. Highly recommended.

wat a lovely pub tucked away..very nice staff and very clean pub..certainly has the womans touch in here

Very nice pub, I often visit when I am on holiday in Eastbourne. We visited on 31st May 2009, and it was very busy. Noticed and got chatting to the bar lady - I think she said she was called Lisa. She was very efficient, and very friendly, even though the pub was very busy, she seemed to stay calm!
Definately visit again!

A curious-looking building, inside and out, with a reasonable selection of five real ales on including a tasty Itchen Valley Pure Gold. This was very lively and a bit hazy, but the efficient and helpful (if not exactly friendly) barman took care to point this out in advance in case customers wanted to choose something else. A strangely subdued atmosphere.

This is a large pub that was devoid of any atmosphere during my visit.
Black Sheep, Harveys Best, Youngs Ordinary and broadside were available and one pump was off and one unused. There were also four standard lagers along with Guinness, Strongbow and Tetleys Smoothflow.
The barmaids were very friendly, but I did get a hint of a Wetherspoons feel, even down to the cheap food. Some would say that this is a good thing and others would not. The Harveys and Black Sheep were good and for this reason I am willing to give this place another try next time Im in Eastbourne twiddling my thumbs at the in-laws. Maybe I'll take the laptop and make use of the free wi-fi.

This pub is excellent since a new manager has taken over. The staff work very hard and are extremely friendly and very helpful. I often visit the pub on Sundays and I have always found Lisa to be extremely friendly and always has time to chat with me. She works very hard and is an asset to the pub.
|
Very decent Tetleys (!) in a slightly haphazard-looking old building, with the most surreal customers I've ever seen - virtually all straight off the tennis courts and with over-complex drinks orders, so expect a wait !
|
Not a bad pub, one of the better ones in Eastbourne. Close to the promenade, theatres and tennis courts. Well kept, reasonably priced ales. Had no complaints about the staff on my visit.
|
Always worth a visit when in Eastbourne - six ales on, all well kept. The food's good, and the service is friendly. the place is clean and spacious, and very convenient for the theatre (!) or the ice cream parlour.
|
Missed this one on earlier visit to seafront so it became the last of the day and things are a little unclear. Big pub, high ceilings, good choice of beers, had to rush off for train.
|
They do a good selection of ales here, which are very reasonably priced. The only problem is the staff, who are really miserable and rude. That alone put me off going back for life.

I like this place much. Price, food, beers and wines are spot on. A must for visitors to Eastbourne.
|
Good clean pub. Staff friendly, beer tasty and reasonably priced. Unfortunately the staff smoke more than the customers so hopefully the pub will improve after July when the smoking ban comes in.
|
great pub great management!!!!

Large, open pub with plenty of wood and a solid feel of permanence and character. 6 casks, 3 of them guests; bar billiards; sky light; view of the sports field; warm, laid back atmosphere. Liked it.
|
A nice little pub, slightly off the beaten track. Complete with Shove Ha' penny board, which you don't see very often. Nice old posters in the hallway to the loos of old pantomimes etc at the nearby theatre. Always cheap booze offers on.
|
A very usefull pub when going to the threatre and shows .Good choice of real ales which are perhaps the best kept in Eastbourne. All drinks are sensibly priced with a number of special offers.Remarkably good value food with two main courses for under8!,however food is not served all day even at weekends. Can get crowded in the evening but always a pleasant atmosphere.
