user reviews of the Prince Blucher, Twickenham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After years of wanting to visit this pub, I finally achieved it on Thursday 26/12/19!! I was not disappointed, it was just as I'd imagined. Just a quality 'drinking establishment'. It was actually larger than I thought as well!! The 'London Pride' was spot on!!! 9/10 from me!!!
wolvesfan - 27 Dec 2019 10:28
Fullers pub with a couple of TV screens showing live football and rugby last night. The interior is nice enough. But the Fullers ales - London Pride, ESB, Oliver's Island, Wise Men & Seafarers (Gales) were a little underwhelming. There is no real cider either. I was only here to watch the football. So it served a purpose. But if in the area, I'd otherwise choose to spend my time in the Sussex Arms opposite instead.
blue_scrumpy - 31 Dec 2016 19:40
Aaargh! What's happened to this place? Years ago you could have a reasonably quiet drink (apart from footy on the TV days). Went in last Saturday and there was a "band" playing excessively loudly. I couldn't have a conversation with my friends and the seating at the back of the pub has now been turned into a dining area so couldn't go there either. On the plus side the ESB was top notch although a bit pricy.

Nice traditional-ish pub a little way out of the centre - it's on the other corner of the Green from where the buses go. Had a pleasant drink here.
rainlight - 1 Sep 2015 09:00
agree with last comment but by far best pub in Twickenham.
thefruitbat - 29 Mar 2015 23:45
Nice friendly pub with friendly, efficient and attentive staff serving a good range of beers. Food is good, if not spectacular but then it's a pub, if you want fine dining go to a top end restaurant, more than adequate. The only thing that lets it down is that at the weekends and in the summer months it turns into a bit of a creche with out of control kids running around while their parents completely abdicate any sense of responsibility for the behaviour of their offspring. That's not really the pubs fault I suppose, it's a family pub with a playground area so you can't expect an adult only environment, but it would be nice if the parents would at least show some consideration for their fellow patrons. The rest of the time, it's great.

Good pub with nice range of ales. Popular, but plenty of places to sit if you include the restaurant. Loos at the top of a flight of stairs - so be warned! Bar staff very friendly, and informed us when the beer we wanted was back on. Food-serving staff so disinterested that we abandoned our plans to eat here and moved on elsewhere!
Trev - 2 Jan 2015 20:18
Good pub, helpful staff and cheerful locals. Great for watching sport.
New decor suits the place. Excellent real ales and a fine garden.
TheChairmen - 23 Jun 2014 16:25
unhelpful bar staff who seem uninterested and unwilling to help, this has been noted on a number of occasions.
ddddd3 - 18 Jun 2014 15:28
Went to the Prince Blucher last Friday evening hoping to have a quiet drink and unwind after a busy week. Experience totally ruined by a group of noisy, disruptive children running around the restaurant area screaming, fighting, out of control. Dad had abandoned them and was in the bar, drinking with his mates. The bar staff seemed completely helpless/uninterested in doing anything about it. This pub is aiming at the lucrative gastro-pub market and asking its customers to pay prices to match. The management should realise that adult diners and drinkers who want a quality experience will simply vote with their feet and go across the road to the Sussex Arms.

This is not the Prince Blucher in Devon (apparently closed). It's in Twickenham. It's a good if not untypical Fullers pub but with a good renage of their beers - e.g. limited edition Traitors Gate on my last visit.
MeurglysIII - 24 Nov 2012 09:05
Sad to report that the Prince Blucher in Tiverton, Devon has closed, after a number of erratic years. It is unlikely to reopen as a pub, now an antiques shop !

So I think your pub in Twickenham is the only Prince Blucher in the country.

I must visit again next season

shame, was a nice pub, still is in some ways but perhaps feeling the competition from the Sussex across the road. Had sunday lunch, unfortunately it was a bit school dinner like. Shame really as should be a better pub.
jeffandstack - 27 Apr 2012 20:13
3.85 for a Guinness with a 2 inch head! Tasted crap, left most of it and went back across the road to the Sussex. 3/10.

I must say that I find Orchard123's review quite upsetting, and as someone who really likes this pub and finds James and his team one of the best pub teams I have encountered, I feel I would like to set the record straight from some informtion I happen to know.

I have heard from a very reliable source that the prize for the raffle was being discussed, agreed upon and arranged by the female supervisor of the pub, through a gentleman who was invloved in organising the Charity Dinner.
From what I hear, the supervisor was extremely helpful and actually stayed in contact with the gentleman directly and instructed him to deal only with her as she was taking ownership of the prize (as James the manager had agreed the prize but had handed over the rest to her). She went through a lot of trouble to have a voucher made and instructed the gentlemen what time he could collect it on the day of the dinner, to which he replied and confirmed he would come and collect it.

After all of that, he never did collect the voucher and as far as I'm aware, he has not contacted the supervisior with an apology or an explaination as to why he did not collect it. The voucher was for a 2 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine... which I feel is a great prize in aid of the local charity. And a prize that now will not be used because of gross miscommunication between the organisers of the dinner. Perhaps only the one person should have stuck to dealing with one Prize Giver? No wonder James was confused and most likely taken off guard!

1 of my fave pubs in twickenham never noticed any of the things people moaned about. James the manager is the most helpfull managers around.when he trains a new member of staff he gives them a history of the pub and of fullers he is the longest serving manager i know he's been here about 25-30 years.
dougie59 - 22 Sep 2011 18:34
Just moved to the area and revisited this pub for first time in 20 years.Reasonable pint of Chiswick served by smiley barmaid.Garden area dominated by families with small children.Manager rather surly.Tried to book breakfast for Rugby World Cup match and was brusquely told by him that they weren't showing that game despite having been told 2 days previously that they were. Will try others nearby to settle on a regular.
Lennyq - 14 Sep 2011 11:17
This pub has always been a favourite of mine. We would normally go in at least once a week for one reason or another. Unfortunately James the manager was quite rude yesterday. After agreeing several weeks ago to supply a raffle prize for a charity dinner he then denied all knowledge of this and was cold, dismissive and very unfriendly. My friend and I then crossed the road to the very new, updated and trendy Sussex arms who could not do enough to ensure that not only did we get excellent service but also a very generous offer for our raffle.

So from now on I think the Sussex Arms will be my favourite pub in Twickenham!
orchard123 - 11 Sep 2011 13:42
ivor beer back in the area
service 6/10
house keeping 5/10
value for money 8/10
hospitality 4/10

same as my last visit manager on site been there to long and has gone stale needs to be moved on
bar staff unfriendly and would rather talk with each other than serve customers
toilets have had wet floor sign for at least four years you would think they would have sorted it by now
shame could be good pub but like many in twickenham survives and does not get noticed by fullers directors due to rugby
ivorbeer - 17 Jul 2011 15:15
Does what a pub should do well. Friendly staff, excellent beer, good layout and good mix of locals. Excellent place.
PeterClarke - 4 Mar 2011 10:57
still an excellent pub, one of the best in Twickenham
TheGP - 26 Dec 2010 19:41
second vist in a short while found the food on both visits substandard even served up on a wet dirty table and left it
The change in staff has gone down hill and very unfriendly now
typical fullers pub no sign of the management around, they can do there staff rotor sheets and there health and safety checks and hope the staff take the tasks to hand but, this is still a peoples business!!!
Ambience 8
House keeping 5 constant wet floor in toilets and smell
Service 5
Value for money 3 food let it down

The Prince Blucher is a Fullers pub situated close to the edge of Twickenham Green. A smallish frontage leads into a pub that is unexpectedly large with distinct areas extending back a long way and leading to a large child-friendly garden at the side.

The main bar at the front is L shaped and with low ceilings and, on my recent evening visit, was dominated by a large screen showing the Spurs v Arsenal game and with the usual customer base for sporting events such as this. Seating is a mixture of traditional seating and sofas. The areas at the rear are more comfortable, but with a rather generic chain pub feel to them, and it wasn't possibly to easily escape the noise from the TV screens and the oohs and aaghs of excited supporters.

The London Pride - 3.10p - was on form and this pub is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2010.

A pub is never at its best when there's a big football game dominating and leading the pub atmosphere, but I'm minded to come in again - albeit at a quieter time.

JohnBonser - 23 Apr 2010 13:33
First went in here in 1981 when it was a very smokey Keg pub and scored 0/10 on my list. Seen many changes over the years and is now an excellent venue. Staff very friendly and will lend you a Santa's Hat when you need one!
boriss - 7 Apr 2010 22:26
Still a cracking pub, cozy and friendly inside, staff are always good, manager very good, great food. The garden is quality in the summer, and the pub does not attract riff raff either, it always has a pleasent clientel.
justaquickpint - 22 Jan 2010 12:33
Solid pub - decent food, personally enjoy the Discovery ale here.

I have spent many a night here getting pleasantly hammered, and also done New Years eve a time or two, and have always felt comfortable.

Bar staff friendly, and great in summer or winter.
BigBadBilly - 3 Nov 2009 17:02
Nice pub. Good beer and Sunday lunch (only once) was great. Was in there tonight (Tuesday) and it's obviously popular. Good service.
thehonesttruth - 6 Oct 2009 23:20
To the staff of the PB and Fullers; thank you. The Pride was spot on, good service, nice pub and a good sized beer garden, which was wonderful to sit in on Saturday night after the rugger. Excellent.
ChrisM62 - 7 Sep 2009 12:36
Old-fashioned hospitality at its best.
bagrat - 22 Jan 2009 01:45
Ideal location ideal setting just cannot serve a pint worthy of the name. I have visited 4 or 5 times and the cellaring is inadequate and if it it is genuinely cask marqued then that is meaningless.

A total waste of a great pub in theory.
bedfont - 10 Aug 2008 23:16
Was very shocked to see a member of the bar staff who works here drinking in another fullers pub very nerby. He must of had 3/4 pints of lager followed by a good few brandy and cokes, and then returned back to work because i saw him behind the bar later when i decided to pop in for one. Cannot comprehend how this is being allowed by Fullers, it really is not a very good image for the company.
Twickers45 - 10 Jul 2008 10:42
Reasonable sort of battle cruiser. Friendly young bar staff. Fuller's Golden Pride is available.
threeravensmoor - 5 Jul 2008 09:55
A quality place to get the full range of regular Fullers draft ales. Good bar staff and a manager who clearly knows how to run a pub well. The food's pretty good too and is reasonable value. Watch out for the deceptive slope on the outdoor table football, depending upon which bit of the well appointed beer garden it's sited.
Dave_the_Bee - 1 Jul 2008 00:49
Great in winter or summer, friendly and well managed house with great beers
Noddy56 - 3 Aug 2007 16:03
Agree about the smokiness, but the beer is good. Very busy when any kind of football is on. Bar staff are friendly and generally a pretty decent place.
Oolybel - 2 May 2007 12:26
Visited early evening and it could have done with more than one person serving. But Chiswick and London Pride were pleasant enough and the food was good.
ed.spbw - 28 Feb 2007 20:02
Re-visited the Blucher on Christmas Eve after many moons absence... nice pub; small car parking area outside. There is a small 'no smoking' area at the far end to the right. But as 'GP' points out, i too came away stinking of smoke! Surprised the pub closed so early at Christmas! I will re-visit again as the Chiswick ale was good, but not until July 2007...! Happy New Year! TJ
TeeJay - 1 Jan 2007 18:26
Can't wait till they ban smoking - this is a nice pub, but I feel like I have smoked a 20 pack after every visit..
TheGP - 23 Dec 2006 11:25
Normally I'd be complimentary about this pub because it has quite good Fullers beer.

But it has been quite busy (i.e. noisy) every time I've been, perhaps because there was a football match on earlier.

And it has an interesting attitude to smoking - lots of people were puffing away in the no-smoking room (a defined room, but with pillars instead of walls to separate it from the rest of the pub). And the staff did nothing about it.

Even though there were places these smokers could sit outside the non-smoking room, they made an already unpleasant atmosphere completely unbearable.

So it's a good place to go when you have just been given three months to live with untreatable lung cancer. Otherwise, go somewhere else and live a bit longer.
EldridgePope - 3 Feb 2006 18:44
what is that smell?
julianna - 12 Jan 2006 13:31
Worth a visit and its got a cracking beer garden for drinkers, kids and all.

Could do with cleaning the loos though!
anonymous - 3 Jan 2006 22:41
Lovely pub for a quiet pint.
green - 22 Apr 2005 17:56
Living in Feltham and yet being a Gooner I desperately needed to find a pub that catered for the Red side of London as round my way you take your life in your hands if you point out Chelsea's inadequacies. Thank God for the Blucher - Arsenal fans - friendly, calm environment - Fullers Beer / Carling and good quality Plasmas. I can now arrange to meet my mates without worrying about getting stabbed etc for celebrating a goal - It's a lovely world we live in!!
clive12345 - 20 Apr 2005 15:32
My nearest local, with exception of the Sussex Arms which doesn't count. So it's a shame I usually have to avoid it cos I don't like football. If you do like football, you'll love this place. It's always on. Great in summer cos there's no telly in the garden so footy can be avoided.
Cleversaz - 11 Feb 2005 13:32
New Years Eve update - All other pubs as far as I know were ticket only - Not the Blucher, who welcomed all, including families, hence great atmosphere and the best new years in a pub in living memory - Well done!
TheGP - 2 Jan 2005 20:30
Not A comment but a question if I may ?

Any idea why it is called the Prince Blucher ? I know who he was, but why not named after the english hero of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington?

Hope to vist oneday.

A very nice pub, nice garden, good for watching sports. I can second Mikes comments about the refit, he is obviously a man who spends a lot of time in Pubs.

TheGP - 9 Aug 2004 15:42
I have now been back to this pub after the refurb. It has been carried out tastefully and not like the owners have been down to Ikea, like all the new identi-kit pubs that seem to be all over the place - that makes me mad, GRRR!
mike2004 - 3 Aug 2004 13:53
its not bad. being refurbished at the mo so we'll see after that what its like.

sally - 14 Jun 2004 15:55
This is one of the best pubs in South West London. Good beers and a superb atmosphere combine to make this a winner on many fronts. Something for everyone, a big TV for the sports and a massive garden great for drinking in the sunshine
mike2004 - 8 Jun 2004 21:07
this is a very relaxed pub, with a charming irish landlord!personally i think 5.7 is a meagre rating for this establishment.
Jack - 24 May 2004 19:34
A decent pub, serving some decent ales. A bit pokey around the big screen especially when a big match is on, requiring you to get there early else squint to watch the small TVs dotted around - could do with some repositioning there.
Jon - 24 Mar 2004 16:31
very good to see signs for no-kids zones in your pub - so many pubs ruined by noisey uncontrolled children. Personally i'd like to see a more comprhensive no-kids and no adult-goats policy, perhaps the garden only. I think there are a silent majority of us out here who start avoiding pubs that are crawling with lill' chilren - bless em. you never hear from us or get to take our money because we have given up. How many pints does the average three year old get through? Anyway, well done, we found your pub very tolerable on sunday because you showed consideration for the people who actually spend money in your establishment - keep it up. Oh and you might consider switching the muzak off, or find out if anyone really wants it.
