Ale in tip-top condition and friendly, welcoming service. Quality pork pies on s;e. Well worth a visit - 9/10.

One of the 3 York Brewery pubs in town and a decent little pub for a quick stop while shopping with the wife.
6 pumps on the bar, that were offering 3 York beers and a guest ale. I opted for a pint of Centurion Ghost Ale @ 5.4%
The friendly barman helped the wife choose a beer as she couldn't decide what to have.
Old fashioned looking interior with a nook at the rear with a large open fire place.
Food served downstairs in the bar area and upstairs where there seems to be a restaurant, but I didn't venture up there.
Large collection of beer pump clips all over the bar and entrance hall.
Shop at the front selling York Brewery beers and merchandise

Surprised to see some of the negative reviews. I visited Saturday night ten o clock and it was absolutely fine. Good beer, good singer, and friendly staff and clientele. It may lack some of the wow factor of some of York's recent beer offerings but this is still a damn fine pub.
Considering the competion in York this place and possibly the brewery need to buck their ideas up. As with the previous reviewers it was almost empty and nothing said to me that I should return in a hurry. Shame I liked York Brewery beers a lot when they first came out. Was the acquisation by Mitchells when things started to go wrong?

Sunday evening, predictably less thanhalf full, but lively atmosphere of punters chatting, largely due to one group at the bar. Barman friendly and a good pint of Terrrier had. A coice of Guzzler and Ghost Ale also on. Previously visited a year before and recall it being just as enjoyable a place for a pint.

As one of my favourite pubs in York, i dropped in last night on my way from an excellent as ever visit to the Maltings & Blue Bell. It had been 4 weeks since i had been in here and had had a bad experience with the barman in this much changed pub. Oh dear........the place was empty, i mean empty, still gone were the friendly bar staff and in their place was some 'meathead' as my missus described him ....the same bloke as 4 weeks earlier... I had a pint of York Guzzler which was good although it was chilled and was served a good way short of a full pint. I asked it to be topped up and he reluctantly did so but made a grumpy comment.. During our 30 min he kept staring at us in a sort of scary way, my missus was very uncomfortable so we supped up and left. As we departed he just stared, never said thankyou or even acknowledged our presence ! Extremely rude. Whats gone on here ? This was a vibrant little pub with a great atmosphere and a regular clan of friendly barstaff. It's now dead and if this guy treats his customers the same as us, you can see why. Will not visit again. 2/`10

Walked into an empty pub, 2 hours prior to the torch relay, which passed a 100 ft away. Good pint of Terrier; but barmaid needed to drag herself inside from a fag to pull a pint and then quickly got out again smoking. I was probably there on the wrong hour on the wrong day.

I think literally, this pub was selected as the venue for a starter of ten (pints), and we weren't disappointed. Entered through a narrow corridor which one could easily pass by if not being observant, the pub is down-to-earth and friendly yet retaining a sense of civility and a well-heeled edge. There are various artefacts of breweriana in the front window, and at the rear 'comfy' seating is available as well as more traditional chairs 'n' tables.
Punters were mixed in both gender and ages, and it had a kind of 'catch-all' atmosphere about it which suggested it would suit one's needs irrespective of mood, purpose or occasion. Indeed, I made two visits whilst in York over the last weekend; the first on Saturday afternoon when things were gearing up - rugby was being screened but not too obtrusively. Both the barman and barmaid were informative and convivial - some London bar staff really could learn a thing or two from the way they operated here! All York beers tried - Guzzler, Centurion Ghost and Terrier - were splendid (as one might expect at the brewery's tap). A guest ale also featured - I forget which on the first visit though by the second on Monday it was a Bateman's offering and very tasty.
Sampled some of the food on the second appearance. A range of obvious but worthwhile pub grub meals were offered, with a couple of more-interesting sounding specials. I just about managed the homemade fish pie which was a delight, but served with cauliflower, broccoli (well-cooked), chips (chunky), and, er, gravy! A bizarre mixture but each constituent part was as it should be, so no real complaints. Didn't need to eat again until 8.30PM!!
This case well-recommended and certainly I would venture back next time I'm here. The only remaining question was how it could not be listed in the latest Beer Guide? One suspects CamRA politics or ridiculous quota rules may be at fault...

Still one of my favourite York pubs. Had the best pint of Guzzler I have ever tasted on December 2nd.
A small pub with friendly staff and very well kept beers from York Brewery and further afield. Pleasant, sociable atmosphere on a Saturday evening whilst Hen Party Hell reigned outside on Stonegate!
The front room is the shop for the York Brewery. You can either access the bar via the shop, or by the right hand entrance along a corridor. The bar has three distinct areas, and for a Sunday, when all the tourists were busily milling around outside, it was uncannily quiet inside.
There were four ales from the York Brewery, plus Skinners Splendid Tackle, Bowland Brewery Sawley Tempted and Holdens XB at an extremely modest 2.85.
Very good, friendly service and a cracking pint, but rather quiet. 7/10.
The only pub not rammed to the rafters on a Saturday night in the Shambles area (a good thing). The usual York range on, all immaculately kept.
Good range of beer (no Yorkshire terrier on our visit), unusual location, but didn't seem to be trying very hard.
This is an interesting little pub, of that there is no doubt. An L shaped room behind a shop front that's set up nicely for quiet conviviality and intimate conversation. If I remember correctly 9 pumps were on offer and I plumped for the fine York Brewery's First Light - I'm always intrigued by handwritten clips. This was a late Sunday afternoon so the atmosphere was a bit too low-key - perhaps unsurprisingly, and for a spell there were considerably more staff milling about behind the bar than there were customers. Also it seemed as though the only natural light was provided by a window that looked out on to the shop front. I may have misremembered of course.Would like to try it again later in the evening for a fuller appreciation.

Excellent beer!, friendly service...so..so.. food
visited twice late January 2011. Had been here several times before and love the place. The beer is always reliable and the place has that lived in look. Avoid the food though - there are lots of other better places in the locality. A total mix of people visit and everyone is always friendly. The only off putting thing is getting served. The staff seem to think they are as part of their social life and your presence is clearly an inconvenience.

visited after trying the 3 legged mare - once again bar staff very friendly - more good beer from York Brewery - we were there when it was very cold in December and could have done with a bit of heat to thaw us out - sofas were very comfy
Has Westons Old Rosie real cider - may be the only pub left in York serving it now the Tap the Ackhorne have closed. The Sunday dinners being served looked good. 10% off ales, cider & food to CAMRA members.
Popped in as recommended by the Yorkshire Brewery for its food. Mistake! Microwaved pies and soggy chips were all that was on offer. I liked it, but felt that it was getting a bit down at heel and in need of some care and attention. Friendly enough though.
Worth a visit.Avoid Saturday afternoons,because busy,busy.
Well worth a visit. It was quiet when we dropped in, though the beer was excellent and the service friendly. Floor and tables a bit sticky, but I suspect it was an off day. I like the beer shop out front. Nice.
Agree with everything said by last couple of reviewers, great beer and worth a visit.
Popped in for a quick one as a break from shopping/sightseeing on a day trip to York. Characterful place with a good range of ales. The "Taster Tray" idea -four third-of a pint samples of the York Brewery's real ale offerings for 3.55 - is a great way to promote their products.
Went here on a Thurs night last June and had a very enjoyable time. Like the Three Legged Mare it's owned by the York Brewery. Of the two I prefer this one. Most of the York ales appeard to be available. I had Guzzler and Constantine. It was a warm evening and sitting where I was could see the blue sky through the conservatory ceiling. Everyone was very pleasent a special mention must go to the Aussie barman. Took part in the pub quiz and felt we did ok considering there were only two of us! It's obviously quite a tradition as the place filled up considerably. Hope to return again this year.
York brewery's most recent pub is on the bustling, historic Stonegate in the centre of the city. At the front a shop displays the brewery's wares, whilst the pub is accessed via a side corridor. It's opened out and unremarkable, save for the conservatory roof (must be fine in summer) and wood-burning stove at the rear. Traditionally furnished throughout and unpretentious, it offers a very strong range of ales- all the York brewery ones, as you'd expect, plus guests from Tring and Tirril microbreweries making up the 10 or so handpumps. There is also an unpretentious, basic food operation, which is thoroughly on the backburner as beer is the main draw here. My pint of Guzzler was in fien form and very quaffable. This pub has a great range of beers and is less tourist-oriented than its near-neighbours on Stonegate, and is definitely worth a visit on an York trip.
Enjoyed our visit to this pub again. Good choice of their own York beers and plenty of guest beers. We enjoyed 2 York beers, Yorkshire Terrier and Guzzler, 2 Summer Wine beers, Dambusters and Helios, and Abbeydale White Xmas. Someone who asked for coffee was told they did not do coffee but could have Mulled Wine instead. A bit strange as most pubs, especially those serving food, do serve coffee. Think the chef had failed to get in so they were losing out on food as well. Good pub with a great atmosphere though.
Characterful gem of a pub located on Stonegate in the centre of York, only a short walk from the Minster. Been here a few times and never fails to satisfy. York Brewery beers plus guest ales all served in excellent condition by friendly staff, and on the one occasion I sampled the food (pie chips and peas) this too was superb. Pleasant upstairs room with large bay window which is excellent for watching the world (and the totty) go by. Toilets also upstairs very clean (at least the gents was), there is a stairlift for those less able to manage stairs. One of those places that it is a criminal offence to miss if you happen to be in York.
A great place to while away some time. The usual York Brewery suspects plus guests, the chap in the shop seemed a bit miserable though. Probably the best of the York brewery pubs, although it's close.
In my opinion the best of the Yorkshire Brewery pubs in York. Lovely pint of Terrier Bitter. Very friendly and knowledgable bar staff. Very clean and welcoming and a very unusal layout with the shop front. Good atmosphere and friendly clientel. Will visit again when next in York.
Initially thought that this place was just a shop selling York brewery carryout until, venturing inside, we discovered a fine little pub dispensing excellent quality ales dispensed by friendly, knowledgeable bar staff. Wouldn't hesitate to revisit.
Good beer and freindly staff. Shop is a bonus if you want to take some beer home without going to the brewery itself!
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this place is not a tourist trap, despite being on the "circuit" for visitors to York.It feels more like being in the back room of a shop (well, I suppose it is just that really).Full range of York Brewery Ales seemed to be on offer and sadly I hadn't the time to try more than two, both in excellent condition.
One of those in my "I wish it was my local" category.
The pick of the York Brewery affiliates. Even smaller than you might think from the outside, it's atmosphere doesn't feel in the least bit fabricated. The ale keeps its head better than anywhere else too. As if that wasn't enough, cracking little shop 'out front' too. Result!
A great little pub (converted from a shop, winner of CAMRA award for the conversion I believe).
Serves the range of York brewery beers in excellent condition as you'd expect. Bar staff were knowledgeable and friendly.
There are a number of different drinking areas, so each visit of the first few could give you a slightly different feel to the place.
Was full to rafters when I went on Saturday night - understandably so. Only downside was that it felt rather cramped - but for York, that's often the way things are!
Well-worth the visit.
Nice pub, well hidden from the masses behind the York Brewery shop. Several well kept York beers plus a guest or two, always a good atmosphere in here. Upstairs is another room that used to be the non smoking room. If you can get the seats at the table near the window you can watch all human life pass by on Stonegate especially on a busy Saturday night. We watched the bouncers at the Olde Starre trying to eject a drunk, the police arresting a beggar and about 20 girls wearing very little (probably from Newcastle) flashing their bits at all and sundry. It's great.
Late review from November and another York brewery pub we always call at when in York. The beer was as not well served as in the 3 Legged Mare, but they are good for choice so may have been a one off.
This doesn't look like a pub from the street, but is a great advertisement for the York Brewery. During my visit, they had Guzzler, Stonewall and Centurions's Ghost Ale. Very atmospheric.
Excellent pub. Wished I could have stopped for more of the excellent brew (on this occasion Guzzler). Was looking for this pub but dropped on it by chance. Was only in York for the weekend but this was the best pub I ventured into and well worth seeking out. A shop on the premises too.
Very nice pub. Good staff and good selection of real ales to choose from! Everything was in fine order when I was there last week. A fine real ale pub. Highly recommended for a stop if you are in York!
Lovely grub brill. selection of beers hard to fault it, been in 7 times now will always call in when in York.
Standard bearer for the York brewery - had a nice taste of Golden Harvest when in there recently. Golden with a hint of wheat about it.
Of all the York Brewery Pubs, I consider this one to be the best. Always a great selection of York ales backed up with a good selection of guests. The Guzzler is always spot-on and always a "must. Nice to see a blend of decor balanced between what a real pub used to look like and a more modern design.
Finally found a pub worthy of a 10 rating. What a fantastic bastion of real ale. Ooop noorf for a week's work and this became my home away from home. Ale absolutely perfect, every pint. Very very friendly. Not just the staff but the locals as well. As noted before Guzzling Guzzlers is the way to go. The Terrier is also a fine beer. I really recommend starting with the selection tray and finding your own favourite. Carried as many mixed cartons of bottles as I could handle back with me. All in all what a pub should be.
Great cosy little pub. Several ales from the York range; Decade, Centurian's Ghost, Guzzler, Terrier, Stonewall were all on when I visited. As were guests including Crouch Vale Essex Boys. They do sampler trays of 4 x 3rd pint nip glasses if you feel inclined to tick.... I downed a Decade and guzzled a Guzzler. The Guzzler really hit the spot.
There's a York Brewery shop in the front room that's open during the day.

If you are in York you have got to visit this place!
A really nice little pub, several different rooms with different drinking experiences, and the upstairs bay window is a great place to watch the world go by.
Greatly little pub, at the back of shop. Upstairs is like being in someone's house! Good selection of Yorkshire beers
Good pub, great service. Maybe a bit bright with the lighting! Good to see Stowford Press on tap. Definately worth another visit. 8/10
Another good York brewery pub with guests. Enjoyed the York Decade and Castle Rock Robin.
A secluded entrance ( a door next to a shop front) leads to a back bar. Whilst this is obviously a new or "made over" interior, it has all the best features of traditional Victorian/Edwardian pubs, at the same time having a light airy modern feel. I found Yorkshire Terrier to be a very quaffable pint, lovely and clean and tasty and "moreish". York brewery has two other pubs in the city which are decorated and fitted out in a similar (almost chain) way whilst retaining individuality. This one was my favourite, providing a nice cool holt to escape to on a hot afternoon. It was nice to see that these pubs (and their ales) were popular with young and older alike, male and female!!!
Incredibly characterful and very busy - beer good but not great, just another great York pub.
Great pub. I found it a lot quieter than most in that area. VERY good staff and landlord was very hospitable to us. Of course, the real ale selections at the bar were superb. York Brewery does an outstanding job with its brews. I must agree that Centurions Ghost is a great pint, but the Stonewall is worth a go as well. When we visited, the Terrier had a guest beer-Damson Porter-which turned out to be quite lovely.
Highly recommended so we thought we'd visit. It was suggested that with children we could use the upstairs room Empty, awful room we ate elsewhere.
I came back on my own a few days later and enjoyed a great Centurion's Ghost downstairs in the MUCH mmore appealing bar.
Except for the upstairs room this seems a great pub.
Agrre totally with the Centurion's Ghost...the best beer of the entire night on a tour of the city centre. A little gem of a pub.
I always eat at the Yorkshire Terrier when I come over to York from Leeds. The food is usually very good but the main reason for going is the York Brewerys very own Centurions Ghost beer! Got to be my favourite 'dark' ale, maybe even my favourite beer of all time! (Can't quite decide between CG and 'Cracker' by Barngates)
The only slight niggle I have is that it can sometimes be cold in this pub, there is a small fire but it usually has staff sat in front of it.
The other York brewery pubs in the town are worth a visit too.
Situated in the city serving excellent ales and not expensive for its location. Very quiet for a lunchtime but no food on owing to fire recently in the kitchen. It had a good range of ales from York brewery plus guests. My only concern was bar staff smoking in front of bar but I can accept a lot of customers would not be troubled by that. There is a no smoking area upstairs apparently which I did not investigate.
An excellent little pub. I must agree with steve below, and say, I have always enjoyed my visits. Great choice of beer (6+ on hand-pulled) and a few lagers and ciders. They do nice food, in nice surroundings, and have a great no smoking room upstairs. In response to the thought that its an expensive place, yes there are cheaper places in town, but it is right in the city centre, and there are bars with less going for them that are considerably more expensive.
Will need to get a bank loan to drink here. If you want warm over priced beer, this is the place for you.

Recently opened pub/bar in Stonegate. Owned and run by the York Brewery it has at least 8 of their super beers on tap. Visited on the 2nd Feb 2005 in the evening and was welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. Beer was superb and was offered a sample of the beers by 'Alex' who presumably is the bar manager. A most enjoyable evening and a 'must visit' when in York.
