correction - NO vertical drinking...
Reopening on 4th July - after the coronavirus lockdown.
Like the majority - though not all - of Wetherspoons.
The refitting (signage, partitions, sanitisers etc.) Is in progress.
Vertical drinking only!
Nog - why support a pub site, and rarely comment on them? Other than to remind us, for example, that one - which was posted as closed over 12 years ago - remains so.
Ahh! So you're the oddball that was sat in the corner counting the customers!
Visited here this morning around 10.30am - and counted 57 customers; these would have started arriving from 8am.
All having breakfast, coffee or alcoholic drinks - mainly shoppers. The only other pub, in central Redhill, hadn't opened yet.
Excellent food and beer quality here, at very reasonable prices - and served efficiently. To a captive market - with few other options to this Spoons.
Replicated in towns throughout the country, every day.
In recent years, 5 pubs in central Redhill have closed because of Wetherspoons' dominance.
Invisible management allows a few loudmouthed barmaids to converse with their local mates - to the detriment of customer service and efficiency.
Home to a band of regulars - individuals who sit daily in the same chair.
At the same table.
Virtually all day, drinking the same beer - and eating before they leave.
They meet their friends and keep warm. A series of little social clubs really.
Wetherspoons now have a significant place - in the lives of many.
The last 4 posts were written by the same person. Complete saddo. He has to talk to himself because he has no friends.
Until relatively recently, there were five pubs in the centre of Redhill - now there are two; and the Sun trades for 4 hours before its sole competitor even opens - and well after it closes!
Not just a pub - it serves breakfasts, morning coffees, lunches, afternoon teas, dinner etc. And it's busy throughout the day - with locals and shoppers (a massive new Sainsbury's is just opposite).
Food and beer are of good quality and the place is well run. Six nations rugby will be shown - as are other major sporting events. In this area - there is no busier pub/restaurant.
Pleasant Wetherspoons adjacent to large supermarket and town centre shops - with a betting shop next door. Redhill has excellent transport links and this pub is busy all day - with only one other pub in the town centre. Food and beer are good, and the staff friendly and efficient. Perhaps the busiest pub in east Surrey.
My last post is incorrect. There was no stabbing at the Sun - sorry.
Stabbing there late last night - Surrey Mirror website says.
Big enough that you can avoid any customers you don;t like the look of (and there are quite a few of those). Beer ok and cheap. Handy if you''re in Redhill.
Well run Wetherspoon - and busy all day. Coffees, breakfasts, lunches etc., in this town centre location. Trading for 4 hours before the other pubs even open! Near bookies, supermarket, newsagent - and more. Well run with good quality food and beer.
Ooh, Gamboozler, does Sadie still work there? Does she have eyes like sin. If so, I'm in.
The majority of people realise that Wetherspoons outlets vary greatly, sadly the Sun is a prime example of how not to run a pub, the customers are the type that are generally found in a park with a tin in their hand, strangely Redhill has an awful lot of this type. The Garland which is nearby has a far better customer base creating a pleasant atmosphere and is well supported even though there is a huge price differential. Constuctively the Sun needs to get their staff to work in a proper manner, they are a slovenly disaffected crew. The service is dead slow and random, their scintillating social life dominates their conversation and time. The bar is smothered in beer and is as good as superglued. The real ale that I bought but did not finish was Grainstore Gold, normally a very decent pint but served in foul condition. The range of ales was particularly poor, much better Breweries locally are available,Langhams, Dark Star, Dorking etc.The overall impression that I gained was that no one in the pubs heirarchy can be bothered to improve the place even in the smallest way.Perhaps the Area Manager or the Manager should visit the Garland and experience how a pub SHOULD be run.Very rarely does a pub earn a zero but there is no light in the bleak Sun. 0/10. Report this for removal slerpy - 23 Aug 2011 07:4 Still the same,a dump.
The previous poster should try a dating site - rather than a pub/beer one!
Well above average Wetherspoon, and well managed. Good location and excellent beer quality.
And a great full English breakfast for £3.09.
Tom does a decent job all things considered. Beer range variable but what is on is kept well. Adnams Ghost Ship and King Red River for example just now.
Spent most of the night marvelling at the wonderful Sadie, who served impeccably and also looked superb. Cheekbones like geometry. A much-needed touch of class to this otherwise ordinary venue.
For many of us, the GBG is a blast from the past. The Sun is a better Wetherspoon in terms of food and drink quality - and the staff are friendly. Everything works well under the watchful eye of Tom, the manager.
With a bus stop nearby - as well as a supermarket, bookies, cashpoint and newsagents - its a pleasant spot to pass a bit of time whilst keeping in touch with the world, via the excellent and free Wi-fi.
I believe The Sun makes an appearance in the 2016 GBG too. For all the place's unattractive aspects, it at least maintains a reasonable slew of well-kept cask ales. Okay this is in accordance with general Wetherspoon policy, but as we know, not all their venues measure up as well as they might.
This large ‘Spoons right in the town centre was the first of 2 pubs that I visited in Redhill from the 2015 GBG.
Just before noon on a Saturday and its pretty busy & raucous already.
One barmaid on but she was quickly joined by the manager who served me. 12 hand pumps across 2 banks of 6 with most of them being National brands. I went for a few pints of Conwy Brewery Surfin' IPA @ 4.8%.
Very large pub that used to be a Magnet & Southern showroom, loads of seating in an open plan manner therefore the pub does not feel cluttered with tables and chairs.
Mixed clientele, a decent ‘spoons that’s definitely worth a visit when in Redhill.
An acceptable Wetherspoon's outlet in respect of passable and predictable food, and similar with drinks choices, with the exception of the cask ale range which does change reguarly in accordance with the company's pro-ale policy.
Service varies but is usually favourable; beers are well-conditioned and in 18 years (weirdly, to the exact day - it opened on 15 August '96 - meaning kids born that day are now eligible legally to drink here!) I have only ever had to return a handful of pints, though I'm not a weekly visitor.
The trouble is the clientele - not always civilized and not always tolerant or toelrable. But also the sheer blandness of it. It was a Magnet Southerns kitchen showroom when built and despite interesting Redhilliana strewn around the walls, it is a barrack-room for boozers which generates little natural atmos. Liking the outside seating option though; one can at least watch the traffic pass.
Sadly, as a cask chap, in Redhill this represents a competitively-priced good option for variety and quality. Otherwise, I couldn't be arsed.
Too right tempest. Your last sentence accurately describes the OAP's recent contributions. Steve P should really concentrate on Croydon - where he is a well known (and avoided) bore.
If a freehold pub is owned outright (JDW now have many), no rent is paid or borrowing required - and it is noteworthy that this is the only (erroneous) dispute Slerpy is able to take with croydonpeer's comprensive post. So instead, he can only try to insult and sarcastically point out a typo.
Leasehold or Freehold both cost money, 'spoons either pay rent or borrow to buy the premises. Croydonpeer , "someting" do you mean Sompting near Littlehampton or something else? I have noticed that you only post after school or during the school holidays.
The place IS thriving - selling food and drink from 8am to 11pm; drink to an even later hour. I'm sure JDW will be greatful for your advice, but with a 250% increase in share price over the last 5 years, about 50% a year, they know what they're doing!
Prices vary on a successful formulaic basis from region to region - based on the cost of stock, transportation and overheads. Your assumptions on pricing are random and inaccurate; for example, you are unaware whether the premises is occupied as a freehold, leasehold or otherwise.
BTW, the premises was not a carpet warehouse and there is no JDW in Dorking. And Corals may just have someting to say about your plans to 'knock-through - JDW, also, would certainly be unlikely to alter the busiest pub in East Surrey.
I rather like this 'warehouse pub' with good food & great beer. But its prices irritate.
Why on earth does Wetherspoon consider that its huge, souless, beer hall at Redhill is one of its premium price sites? Why charge us impoverished Redhill folk abt 8% more than other local, more up-market, 'spoons?
Redhill's roast/steak & curry night prices are 50p more than other pubs in more expensive towns nearby. With 4 people eating & drinking, it's cheaper to drive to their more upmarket pub conversions at say Dorking/Purley/Oxted?/Croydon/Selsdon. We'd treat The Sun as our regular default canteen, but that surcharge does deter us.
Other Wetherspooons are in expensively converted buildings, on prime sites. This one is just a huge ex discount carpet warehouse below a concrete multistory car park, on the unpopular edge of town. (A town that's packed with unrentable empty shops). This pub's neighbors show what Redhill customers want. It is next to a Poundstretcher; a 39p birthday card shop ('to show she's worth it'?), a Next obsolete stock discounter; a Poundland, a 'mum saved at Iceland' & assorted sub-discount units.
It must be one of the cheapest buildings Wetherspoons lease, by volume. If they choose to drop the Redhill surcharge, the place would thrive. They might then knock-through to both neighbors & increase its warehouse chic.
I have been using The Sun regularly at Lunchtimes, and cannot fault it's value for money meals and very good real ales - where else can you get a well looked after guest ale for £2.15 a pint these days? I've just had a beautifully cooked Sirloin steak including a guest ale for £10.30 this lunchtime. Our Social club had our Christmas lunch here and we were treated like royalty. One of the critiscisms of the Sun tends to be that it is full of "low-lifes and alchies" - I suggest you don't listen to this crap and try it for yourself. My one criticism is that there seems to be a very high turnover of staff - it is a very busy pub/restaurant and even the long term staff don't tend to recognise me, even though I've been using this pub weekly for the past 2 years!
A Wetherspoons, with all the associated caveats, but notable for serving regional ales (Surrey Hills, Hammerpot...) and a genuine craft cider (Gwynt Y Ddraig Black Dragon) so clearly it is not just going through the motions.
For a Wetherspoons this is not bad. The manager takes an interest in real ale and supports the local breweries. Service is not too bad (especially when compared with the dire offering in Horley).
Well, service here simply couldn't go down hill, It is one of the worst pubs i've ever been in and the staff exhude a complete don't give a XXXX attitude but when you look at some of the idiot posters on here who are regulars then perhaps its reputation as a place for dossers and ne'er do wells is justified.
Sevice quality has improved here overall. But, when it was pointed out to a barman recently that he was serving people completely out of order/sequence - he replied that he had bad eyesight! Specsavers, maybe......
Well run Wetherspoon which I visit on some weekday nights; usually, a friendly staff is on duty and the pub is very handy for transport links. Beer and food are of a good standard, with a bookies next door.
He does seem to be a moaning barsteward.
However this really is a shit pub :-)
Over 40! negative comments on various pubs, by the last poster. Ill?
Very poor service and the regulars appear to be little more than simians break dancing.
Plenty of ice now! Good JDW - the busiest pub in the area, by far. Most staff are friendly and the Olympics will be on TV, every day.
Yeah, this place has been lacking ice for weeks. Some bright JDW spark today decided 'why don't we just ask the pub down the road for some?'
Problem solved
Not three bright in here, management-wise
Now they don't even know when they WILL have ice!
STILL, NO ICE
30c today
AND, the excuses have been proven to be lies
Simply bad/inept/uninterested management - who concentrate on the new football revenue.......
A month later - still no ice!
they have turned on another tv, with captions! the other one is still broken - no captions. just work out which way to face your head......
and, the barmaids and barmen are all falling in love! unfortunately, they have to visit each other when one is off duty and the other isn't - increasing waiting times.
its even worse when they chat together, on duty.
no ice today and the wifi is dodgy - on it now.....
Yes, I've noticed the constant TV news that only some lip-readers can understand and have asked for the captions to be put on - only to be told they're broken, about a year ago. Maybe, the local management think that regulars have no interest in the news? If so, why show it?
Showing Sky News - with no sound - is a good idea; but only if the captions show what's being said! For months now, the on-screen captions do not work here and one wonders why this simple, but very obvious, problem has not been rectified.
Clientele can be a little rough around the edges at times, but the ale quality is consistently good (and far better than most Wetherspoons I've been in). Seems to be a little quieter on weekend evenings now that Redhill's nightclub has closed.
Just another JDw unemployed and scivers club - must be avoided
love this pub
Yes, service (or lack therof) is still the problem. Now made worse by off-duty staff being served first by those on duty - slowly, because of the mandatory banter. At peak evening time: Not good enough really.
This barn-like former Magnet & Southern outlet is in an ideal JDW location with a station (bus and train), McDonalds, supermarket, betting shop, dole office - all nearby. But, standards are low in terms of staff/service and hygiene. Improvements are urgently needed for the Sun to achieve its potential. A 4ish rating is correct.
Even the dyed blond barman has improved, albeit from a low base! Charity events and music are now featured and the place has a better feel to it. With zero local competition (one recently had its opening hours cut and another was the subject of police activity - all on the local paper), The Sun still has room to improve its business levels - and service quality/speed.
I have visited this pub a few times at lunch time now and while I don't generally agree with the JDW ethos of sell it cheap and attract the chavs, I do think that as JDW outlets go, this isn't too bad.
I have read some of the earlier comments and would defent the staff to some extent as I have always found them friendly and helpful so Tom's work is paying off. On the down side, it can sometimes take a while to be served but I am not aware of being ignored in favour of regulars.
The selection of ales is excellent and there is always something different to try as well as a few regulars for the less adventurous. I have been offered tasters in the past and the ale is kept quite well so while the atmosphere isn't that appealing, its not a bad place for a lunchtime pint.
It is just a shame the bar staff cant serve people in the order they get to the bar, it seems the regulars get priority even if you have been waiting for ages they get preference
Credit where its due. The attitude of staff has improved in terms of service speed and general approach, but, still more work to do.
Thanks tradervic. Staff training and attitude is obviously massively important to me and everybody who comes in the pub, i have shown all my managers the comments that have been placed on this site because i think it is important they know how you all feel as well. I am working very hard on the staff and feel they are responding to me but as i said before this requires time and as the manager i do not accept a bad attitude and expect them to be friendly all the time so comments like this are very useful when it comes to me knowing what training is required so thankyou again.
Tom, I wish you well in your efforts. But, I feel the problems have been allowed to continue so long that they have become deep rooted and endemic; mainly, they relate to staff training - and attitude.
Just one example! A while ago, I saw a chap politely complain about his drink - to a barman who derided the chap for his comments and would not even acknowledge the possibility of a sub-standard drink.
It seemed as if the barman was programmed to defend JDW's honour - instead of either taking the customer's word for it - or going away to see what might have been the underlying cause(s).
At least Tom, you have acknowledged faults; that is a good starting point in your efforts to improve standards.
No this is the management response to you comments as i am the manager and would never try and hide behind a false name. I appreciate all the comments put on this site good and bad and do read them, what i would like to say in response is that although i have worked in the pub for 3 and half years i have only actually been the manager fo 2 and a half months and as anybody who works in this business knows it takes time to improve a reputation that has taken quite a battering over the last 18 months. A lot of these comments compare us against a pub that is 10 years younger than we are so it is going to be easier to maintain and look that bit tidier. Also the comments regarding the management not caring and being very bad etc i would also like to add that we have had quite a change in the management team as well as myself in the last few months. Although there is negative comments that i do agree with ie the tables being sticky and the pub looking dated, what i would like to say is we are trying to improve the standards ( slowly replacing tables and trying to smarten up the tired looking decor believe it or not on a challenging budget). What i would like to defend is the management attitude, i have a very good management team and we are working very hard on improving the standards, hygiene and trying to make your visits that much better. This pub is never going to be everyones cup of tea i accept that, but as a new manager just ask to be given a chance to make the required improvements, and belive it or not do appreciate all your comments good and bad. I am also always available in the pub so if you feel you want to pass your comments on in person then please feel free to come and see me.
very true, beer. 2363 after one visit in five years knows more about the place than the management!
After about 30 negative posts in the past 18 months, the last poster (who joined the site today and visited the pub once in five years) corrects and admonishes regular customers who criticise this awful pub 'sitting at your computers' - even The Sun provides WiFi!. Is this, I wonder, the management response !?
Think you lot need to put your glasses back on and actually go into the pub, rather than sitting at your computers. After visiting the pub after 5years on friday night i have to say what a nice pub this is. Safe and friendly. And the food is good too. The new management team are on focus to change the old image. (probably the one you lot cant move on from). Ok they cant change the interior of the pub thats not something that they can do. As we all know how big companies work. However it does look like they have got a new carpet so its a step forward. And with events like meet the brewer which i haven't seen done in a long time, being offered every week, and a live band coming in. Its surely stepping in the right direction. I had a long chat with one of the managers and he was very enthusiastic about the ales and how he has got all new cellar equipment to improve them. Overall such a lovely visit, so i will be visiting this pub again when i am next down, oh and yes this female will enjoy a quiet pint in a decent pub whilst all you males sit at home moaning on an internet forum!
In a town devoid of a decent pub, the local JDW management don't seem to even make an effort to run a reasonable outlet. The Sun is tired and dated, with a staff who have no interest. Standards are low and the place just ticks along because of its location near the DSS office, bus stop, supermarket and Corals. One of the worst JDW's I've been in; it fails under all headings. Those in charge (!) have given up the ghost and its seems ironic that JDW continue to rapidly open new pubs (though mostly away from the South East) when they are inept at running some of their current batch. Cheap beer isn't the only way to attract customers.
Now, this pub is even getting adverse comment on Wetherspoon's own website!
Management is very poor and a 4+ rating is far too high.
Slerpy is an odd chap.
On 23/5, he berates my comments about The Sun - of 23/4. Now, on 23/8, he endorses them!
Nothing has changed recently at the awful Sun, Slerpy - except that we've lost the lovely Emily.

I know JDW's are like Marmite and to be honest I am not a great fan.
However there are some decent exceptions to this, for example the Jack Fairman in Horley is a decent example of how they can be a good pub.
Sadly this brings me to the Sun, for gods sake how the hell can you get a pub so wrong. Poor hygine, tables which never see a clean cloth, beer which is at best below average. Then there is the very poor level of the punters, do they bus in the dregs of society????
Avoid, avoid, avoid. Even in a good pub desert like Redhill there are much better options than this hole.
A quick way to guage hygiene standards at the Sun is to go around and attempt to lift the glossy Wetherspoon magazines which are on each table. You will find that a high percentage of the publications are firmly stuck to the table top.
Hygiene (like tempest) was high on my priorities when I filled out the somewhat vague questionaire which I handed to a barmaid who didn't seem to know anything about it.
Other points made were - the personality bypasses of staff , even bearing in mind the clinical JDW approach. The utter tiredness of the place; nobody seems to care.
The nearest JDW's are in Horley and Leatherhead - maybe a sign that this part of Surrey is not their heartland; fine! Both these pubs are miles away (but far ahead) under every heading; perhaps a sign that the area manager - and managers - need some analysis and/or replacing.
Tom, the manager - when passing a member of barstaff (from behind, as friendly jokey type 'shock') put two empty/cold pint glasses on this same serving bloke's face. This attempt at a 'bit of fun' between mates was taken in good taste.
Sadly, two pints were sold (today) from those two shelf replaced pint glasses.
Hygiene ain't too good here - but what is?
yes this type of survey is a complete waste of time - a good example of the poor management in this pub. saw a couple of blokes (those limited to 2/3 pints a day!) having some fun completing a few forms the other day. to leave it to random is idiotic. as said already, surveys/questionaires must be targetted at a real cross section of customers to make them relevant and asking for staff names is just not on...
Whilst a questionaire can be an informative and helpful tool, many of the Sun's questions are badly worded - but the real mistake is to leave the forms on the counter. This method is unlikely to provide an accurate sample/result.
A cross section of customers should be approached - 'we would be grateful if you would help with our survey' - to ensure a broad range of comment. These individuals should include regulars, dinners, shoppers, office workers etc. - so that the end result will be meaningful.
Most organisations target their customers. The Sun just does it by lottery. At least, they seem to accept that improvements are required.
Pub is doing a questionaire on service etc. at the moment; it seems like the penny might have dropped! As said before, this place could be a lot better with some real management and effort.
A below average JDW with indifferent staff. Maybe with two nearby pubs completing major refurbishments, an effort might be forthcoming - little effort is currently evident with seemingly badly trained staff as the norm.
My comment was on this outlet's indifferent service; Mr Slerpy, you don't say whether you agree or otherwise.
I'm sorry but I've no idea what a Freedom Pass is; as far as I know, I'm allowed to go almost anywhere without any type of pass.
Wealdman, Why not go to another pub instead of bleating on,have you lost your Freedom Pass ?
Yes, complacent is the word for the Sun's management (and staff). JDW's formulaic approach often generates this attitude which incorporates boredom; the latter causes a failure to remember even small orders - just made - and to give the right change. Ross and Tom know that standards are not that important in a town where the competition is even more dire and customers are not usually too demanding (when a complaint IS made, the air of incredulity is almost palpable). A pity, because the Jack Firman (the Horley JDW) is in a different league.
Too right, fox. Because of the almost zero competition in Redhill, the management have become extremely complacent and great mates with their staff buddies. Nothing wrong with that but service standards have slipped. A shake-up in management (Ross etc.) wouldn't go amiss and, perhaps, breathe in some new life/enthusiasm to the place; this may be difficult because of the lack of competition, although a major refurbishment of the Home Cottage has started - to be followed by the Dog and Duck later this year.
The Sun's staff (some good, some bored/bad) all seem to have an inability to see who is next to serve - and just leave it to random or ask 'who's next?'
Even an effort would help; it can't be that difficult. Also, the staff have a tendency to chat together at the coffee machine end of the bar, leaving service at the other end an even bigger lottery.
Incorrect change is common and there is considerable scope for improvement.
Havent been in this pub for a long time but I popped in the other day quickly, looks very different since I last came in and it much improved. Like most older spoons though it could do with a bit of a refurb and clean up. Couple of the staff didnt seem that interested but good to see Tom still working very hard there and still a good range of products
Relatively good and very busy JDW - with some pleasant/good staff, but also a few with no interest whatsoever. Near the toilets, the tables seem utilised by the 'regulars' - many of whom virtually live in The Sun.
After all, prices are the cheapest for miles, literally. But - to many - it is God's waiting room, sadly.
Hi, sorry, panicky drinkers can stop writing to bewildered Geoff, about the 'boarded up Sun' (I posted to the wrong pub)
I immediately reported the post for deletion but I guess it may take time.
The excellent early morning breakfasts now available there seem to be served by the same people serving in day & evenings. Keep up the good work guys, hope more staff are on the way.
The last poster says that this pub is boarded up. It is not.
It remains a fine Wetherspoon and is - by far - the busiest pub for miles around.
Geofff should try a spell in a Home for the Bewildered!
Yet another local pub boarded up for conversion or demolition for yet more apartments.
Puzzled why our councils subsidises places for the community to get together, while at the same time encouraging our locals to be destroyed.
Unless planners stop treating a pub and it's car park as a brown field development site & give pubs some protection, few will be able to survive.
The Greyhound (next pub to the North) suffered an appalling bad conversion into flats & had all the character of the old building sucked out.
The Causeway (next pub to the South) destroyed to build 30+ apartments (how can profit from pints keep a pub going when it's car park is worth 7million as soon as planning permission is granted?)
The New Inn (the nearest pub opposite) The old landmark building that used to greet people entering Redhill from the North. is now a tatty plumbing shop
Puzzled why Wetherspoons keep their Redhill pub in their premium price category.
I love the way that Wetherspoons expensively convert old buildings, but this is certainly not one of them, it's just a beer hall made by sticking a bar along one wall of a huge warehouse under a multistory car park, that used to be a carpet showroom.
Why does the beer cost more here & the food cost 50p more that in the nearby Wetherspoons that are smaller, in far more expensive buildings, that have had costly conversions?
I sometimes use this large Wetherspoons when shopping at Sainsburys and have never really taken to it. It is very large and impersonal, and not a pub you can have a chat to the bar staff in. And of course cheap food and beer does tend to attract a certain type of customer, if you get my drift.
This 'spoons is strategically placed opposite the Redhill Job Centre, a wonderful euphemism for what is actually joblessness.whatever you care to say about wetherspoons they surely know their marketplace! Having gone in several of the VERY best pubs in Redhill the best pint by a street was here, a lovely pint of Brew Dog Trashy Blonde, the barmaid did give me a look as I enounciated the vowels of "trAshy blOndE" but she took no outward offence. On sitting down to read my newspaper the nearby tables were populated by various sub sects of Chavs boasting to their ilk of twocing, the obvious common sense in wearing a friends jacket ( suitably labelled with their name, the idea is that as the local constabulary " feel one's collar" they are left holding a jacket with a misleading name tag.A very nice outlet for real ale but sadly populated by an underclass that think Shameless( channel four) is aspirational !
Given the change of management here (okay, all 'Spoons change managers every 3 months but stay with me!) which actually seems to know how to keep cask beer and moreover is keen to further customer interest in it, I feel I should re-appraise this one. Yes, much of the comments regarding clientele, made by myself and others, sadly remains valid. However, the consistency in ale conditioning, and the breadth of range of guests, has improved markedly, and on my few recent walk-ins I've even found more efficient service. I am reliably advised by more frequent punters that the new chappie, Mark, has already run a successful jaunt to the Dorking Brewery, off his own bat, for free! All those who went along were singing his praises, so we can perhaps hope for more of this in future.
Then again, Mark may be a distant memory in a few months, as the usual Spoony management re-shuffle is surely due soon....!
This pub sells cheap beer. The real ale, can be great value, especially if you choose the 99 pence option which is sold in bucket loads. The other real ales are a hit and miss affair, which is similar to other Wetherspoon pubs. The decor, cleanliness, clientele and service match the low price point.

I have been to this pub four or five times now and on each occasion have enjoyed the visit and experience. I have only one minor grumble - like other people have commented I too find it irritating that the staff appear unable to clean a table with a cloth that hasn't already been soaked in beer. Nevertheless, this is a pretty good pub and worth a visit.

Good pub with good beer - simply the best value in East Surrey @ 99p a pint ! Food is cheap also and The Sun is undoubtedly the best pub in Redhill. The others - a sad lot - can't match the JDW buying power.
My information is (true, I believe) that this pub exceeds 60k a week, in takings ! They must be doing something right...
An about average spoon, but pleasant enough. I had three pints of well kept/top notch Greene King IPA here today for 2.97; this - with others - is a long term deal.
Not too far away, GK IPA is sold at nearly this price - for one pint !
One wonders how will this JDW price cutting will affect the very mediocre competition - in Redhill, and elsewhere ?

Went here a while back and all the toliet partitions and doors had disappeared with the just a row of "pans" remaining. Thought I was going to see Private Pile act out his swansong! Thoughtfully though the staff had put a toliet roll on the floor by each of the, rather exposed, loos!? Might pass as acceptable in France.
Situated far too near to the DWP office, but ok if you want a quick beer on your way to somewhere else and don't need a dump!
Love the white noise of hundreds of people chatting quietly over a good value, good quality bevys with no music/tv
Shame that over the years they've never managed to remove the beer stick engrained into their tables.
If you read a paper don't expect to walk home with the front page it'll be molecularly fused to the varnish.
Super-glue was a spin-off from the space race. Surely there's a world beating application waiting for the first person to register a patent on the gunk from a Wetherspoon table?
While in rant mode. I might add that they thoughtfully wrap a hygienic serviette around the knife & fork, or spoon - bizarrely all except the actual eating bit which they lay on the sickly, beer swilled table. Nothing kills the appetite for Wetherspoon grub quicker than the leverage needed to prise off the bit of the spoon or fork you are about to put in your mouth from the bacterial syrup that calls the tables home.
Bur if you think the build up on the tables is bad, spare a thought for the floor, they soak the table top in dirty water from an antique floor cloth & squeegee the resulting gunk into the carpet - hugely entertaining to take a house-proud female at 'carpet feeding time' & watch the horror in her face.

Guest ales rather hit and miss. Sometimes up to 4 or 5 on tap, sometimes lucky if there is 1. Could do with better management on this front
Imagine assembling all the crooks, alcoholics, tarts and rogues from the area and incarcerating them in one plca. Yep. The Sun o.k...... but was the beer any good ? I am really not interested in the clientele , what's the beer like ?

Popped in for a quick pint after work. The beer selection was not bad and the pint I had tasted OK. Like a lot of 'Spoons it's a bit soul-less. There were also parts of the pub that didn't smell fresh at all - I guess that's going to be more common now after the smoking ban.
A great barn of a drinking establishment that could be mistaken for the booking hall at Kings Cross with about as much atmosphere. The choice of guest ales was limited to Sheps Spitfire!
I'm afraid this is not one of your better outlets Mr Martin and would have probably been better off left as a Magnet store! On yesterday's showing I won't be rushing back anytime soon.
was in there for 2 minutes on thursday before a massive fight borke out lol not the best advertising but its still a great pub, cheap and relatively quick service when you take into account the amount of people they have to serve
Visited last Saturday lunchtime. Yes, it's a bog standard Wetherspoons, you know what you're getting. However, I didn't find the atmosphere "hostile and edgy" in the slightest - probably it depends when you visit. If you visit on Friday / Saturday evening when the psychos and meatheads are out - then what do you expect ?
I was disappointed with the beer range - Courage Best, Directors, Abbott and Speckled Hen from the "nationals" and only King's Red River ( Horsham Brewery ) from the micros, which was an enjoyable pint with a hint of berries.
It was certainly a cheaper and more enjoyable pint than either of the Youngs beers in the Home Cottage, I have to say.
Wetherspoons pubs for me are generally the Ryanair of pubbing: strong brand and cheap. You know that you are not going to get a unique experience. You know that you will have seen it a million times before even if the pub in question is new to you. But you will use them generally because it gets you where you are going: either on the way to somewhere else or on your way to get trolleyed. That said, I have to say that this Wetherspoons pub offers nothing other than cheap beer. The food is terrible even by Wetherpspoons' standards and the atmosphere is hostile and edgy. Located next to a bookie and over the road from the job centre, it is full of people who seem to spend their entire time in that exact vicinity. Just don't even think about going here. I rate this as 1, just because it is cheap.
went in last sunday. the food was ok but the staff were surly and uninterested. the girl behind the bar was away with the fairies and seemed to have no customer focussed training. still it was cheap beer and food!
Not too bad when last visited on a late weekday afternoon. Two excellent local beers from King's brewery in Horsham. Planned to have a quick pint and head for the station, but stayed for another...
Food is sometimes slow. Busy place and reliable standard in food and beer. Best part, not very smoky. Reminded us a bit of Aussie clubs. And we don't tend to like clubs.
Not perhaps one of JDW's most impressive outlets, either in terms of its service, regular customer base or its architecture. However, it isn't all bad at the Sun. Even if you're a devoted beer lover, there are usually a reasonable selection of ales in good nick to be sampled as in most Wethy's; certainly more than in most other pubs calling themselves free houses in the area. The food is no worse than any other similar pub, and depending on the time of day, the clientele can be surprisingly mixed. Yes, old alcies on cider in the morning and loud boys 'n' girls on alcopops and lager of a weekend evening, but afternoons and some weekday eves can be more moderate! Have a quick one, and move on.
It's a bit vulgar to post comments according to where people should drink depending on what they earn - it's offensive to the people who drink in there, and. No wonder you've remained anonymous...
If you earn more than 10,000 a year, you have no excuse to be drinking in here.
"Yeah, but it's cheap innit?"
So is heroin.

yeh the sun is crap, full of alcies queing outside at 9 in the morning and are there all day. yeh its cheap, and nasty. wot more can u exspect. i feel for the staff.

Just say I liked the pub for the range of good cheap beers but had 2 pikey/chav/social security vermin "birds" nick the money from the bottom of the fruit machine when I wonthe jackpot. When I tugged them about it "scar face" Gary and his loser mate threatened me. OK if you can put up with the pond life (not all the clientelle I hasten to add, good guvnor though)
Welcome to Redhill. The usual pillocks will be about causing trouble, however the Sun is considerably safer than certain other venues. Busy atmosphere at weekends - the place to hit before Liquid for a few cheap drinks. Cant really knock it compared to everywhere else
A rubber stamped JDW. Wide open space. Long bar. Bookcase in one corner to add character. It's not great, but it serves food and beer.
Large typical Wetherspoons pub, has all the usual selection of affordable beers & fairly good food. Ive been in this place more times than I care to mention, & despite all the talk of redhill "pikies", "chavs" etc I rarely see that much trouble. Good place to get hammered cheaply before a night out
Iz wikkid, innit mayte? Yeah? Wanna shag?
Cheap beer, cheap food.
Cheap women.
Wasn't sure if the menu was for food or the tarts sitting at the table.
And how the hell does a place with 5 bar staff at any given time take so damn long to serve you?
Walk in, spend 10-15 in 30 minutes, go elsewhere.
Or pick a random bird - preferably one with scraped back dyed blonde hair and gold loopy earings - and treat her her like the lump of meat she is.

Boring pub, no atmosphere, no music and the sound of people talking gets quite annoying! cheap drinks so yeah you can get pissed quick, thats how we get binge drinkers!!

Great for throwing meus out of the windows and cheap beer... I was very very drunk
anonymous - 12 May 2005 23:49 |
Tramps, alcoholics, gypos, and students.
Can knock it - you can get pissed on fifteen quid.
One of the better places to go in Redhill. Very much an open area pub which makes for a good atmosphere. Good place to people watch as well
Some characters in here. A bit like the Red Lion in Godalming, but I quite like that

Well what can i say, the sun, its awsome a good night out and within 2 mins of all the popular redhill night spots cheap wetherspoons prices whenever in in the area its my top pick, i love it.
It's cheap as chips, the bar staff are ok, and the food ain't bad either (although the service can vary). Hosts a special night for deaf customers every now and then which is a nice touch.

great food
Batman - 17 Jul 2004 17:06 |
the sun is great. everypone is so friendly, food and drink are good too
Everyone hates it, and evryone still goes there. Do not go if you want a) atmosphere b) class c) nice clientele. however if you wana see loadsa old mates, get battered for 4 quid and then move on to a better place, you will love it. My advice: join the 'Monday Club' - have every drink on their offer list (each 1.09) theres ten of them. You will never get so wasted on a tenner.

Lots and lots of gyppos and kevs. As all other Wetherspoons there's a good selection of food and beverages at reasonable prices. It's nicer than other pubs in Redhill but it's still not a nice place to be unless you like getting into fights. Very busy at weekends. Staff are OK but it can take a while to get served on Fridays and Saturdays.

i love the sun!! everyone knows ya name, they sell cheap beer(especially stella) and it is close to one of the souths premiere clubs, the british embassy, what more could you want.
whoever thinks the sun is full of inbreds can answer to me! i live in redhil and luv it.
the sun's cheap, has a wide range of beers, ales, spirits and girly drinks, plus filling food and quick service

A nice pub, good prices and fiendly staff but they should play music. Good location.
Milja Mannstrm - 21 Dec 2003 16:29 |
Beers aren't too bad as they sell so much (the only way pubs in Redhill keep the pipes clean). Shame the clientele are all scum, then. Very good place to witness the phenomenon of guys with girls who are out of their league, and then the guy leaves them on their own while they play on the fruit machines for the whole evening before they go to the Abbott where it's okay for them to scream at each other. BRADLEY YOU CAAAAAANT!
Chris - 14 Aug 2003 13:27 |
Horrible atmosphere when sober, but its a great place to see old school friends and such, and the drinks are so cheap you can't not go in there on a night out in Redhill(!).
Oh and Curry Club on Thursdays is becoming a religion to me.
Kat - 30 May 2003 12:02 |
Loads of space is packed on weekends and is popular with us students as it is so cheap. Great warm up before going to The British Embassy Night Club.
Phatboy_Jim - 29 Apr 2003 16:40 |
Standard Wetherspoons, quite large, no music no atmosphere, cheep booze.
