Reopening in August, after refurbishment.

Classic interior but gave up on it - despite being only half as busy as the Angel trying to get served was a nightmare to such an extent I went elsewhere.
Must visit Manchester Pub on the outskirts of the City.
Beautiful building and great beer (as you would expect).
Visit blogged at http://bit.ly/2InlthU
Visited early on a quiet Tuesday evening. Broad selection of excellent beers.
Wonderful place - worth a visit just to check out the building, it's impressive high ceiling, colourful brick walls, real fire and overall charm. It's brewery tap for the Marble brewery and the beers are fantastic. Very expensive though, but you can't grumble at the quality. It's located in a grim part of town but great pubs abound. When we were in this place a chap came in wanting to use someone's mobile and was accused of being a junkie by someone at the bar and there was nearly some fighting but other than that it was great. Got chatting to some of the clientele, all very friendly as they seemed to be in all the pubs in the area.
Expensive. But this was probably not helped by the fact that a lot of the cask ales on offer on my last visit were higher strength. I had a half of the Earl Grey IPA, which I had been wanting to try for a while. We visited between Christmas and New Year so for once it wasn't heaving and we managed to get a seat. Being quieter it gives you more of a chance to admire the impressive interior without constantly shuffling to move out of someone's way. Several guests were available in addition to the Marble offerings. Staff were friendly and made suggestions while we were trying to make up our minds at the bar.
Fantastically impressive pub with equally impressive beer from the Marble Brewery. A must visit.
Fantastic quality of beers, great decor to the pub. Love it. Always a pleasure to visit.
I visited this pub early January for my friend's birthday. Sadly I noticed they've started serving foie gras, renowned for the cruelty involved in its production (& illegal to produce in the UK). Most food places with any ethics shy away from serving this so I was surprised that a Marble Beer pub (organic, vegetarian society approved beers...) would choose to go down this route. So although I used to be a fan of this pub, I no longer feel able to visit. I hope the chef changes his mind on the foie gras and veal front. Shame to see a pub like this lose its reputation. Thanks
Great pub marrying a traditional pub with fantastic food and an excellent beer selection. The always excellent Marble offerings are front and centre with nice guest ales and some top notch keg beers. Cheap? Who knows. Good value? Absolutely. My Manchester "must go" pub.
Before visiting I had the impression that this place was a bit up itself but it was a lovely, scruffy, backstreet boozer with friendly staff and superb beer. It was quiet when I was in but i can imagine it gets very busy . A couple of marks have to be knocked off for the prices, though.
A decent pub but always very busy, and when the tables are full there isn't much standing room at the bar so you're constantly having to shuffle to let people past. Definitely worth a visit if you have never been, lovely character inside, not to mention the infamous sloping tiled floor! It is a bit on the pricey side though and it's another place that now seems to focus on food. Never eaten here or even investigated the menu, but the meals being delivered to the tables looked pretty nice.
Just a general comment regarding BITE. Why have they stopped the comments from being uploaded on the home page - even on the live stream?
It shows on reflection how this place has priced out the ordinary Joe public, when regular 'Posties' are supping in the nearby Angel. It must be well over 12 months since I last frequented the Marble.
Not that I'm disrespecting the Angel- in fact it has become a firm favourite of mine in recent months. The standard of the real ales being in top notch condition with friendly staff.
The Marble Arch along with the Brewdog outlet in central Manchester, exceeds in being totally pretentious and out of touch considering the current economic climate, in my humble opinion!
Visited on 9 April to see the mighty Us hammered by the even mightier Bury. Had a couple of pints of Manchester bitter which was on good form, and the stout which was also excellent, gutted that again the Ginger went before I could get my hands on it. A note on prices, as I pay London prices for my ale i.e a minimum of 3.30 in the Edgar Wallace and up to 3.90-4.00, paying 2.85 for the Manchester bitter and 3.05 for the stout is pretty good to me. Have to say I agree with the comments about the food though, 10.95 for burger, chips and minimalist salad is taking the p somewhat especially when compared with the Basketmakers in Brighton. Overall though this pub is the reason I enjoy trips to see the Us in this part of the world. 8/10
My partner and I went here prior to a gig at Band on the Wall (about 10 minutes walk). I can see that it's a traditional pub that's been 'elevated' to sub-gastro status, which has obviously priced out previous regulars. That's a shame but it's also business - if the beer was rubbish, I'd understand the annoyance, but it is Marble Beer and it's reliably tasty and worth every penny. Believe me when I say that pubs in London serve piss for 4 a pint - you've got a range of great boozers in Manchester, don't knock em! The Marble 57 Thomas St and Castle being a case in point.
Visited the other day. Superb pub (been visiting for 25 years) but the prices are ridiculous now. Beer quality was excellent as was the food but even this is now 'masterchef' stuff ie small portions at ridiculous prices. Would seem its turned into a 'bankers/city workers' establishment who can afford these prices. Can we have our old Marble Arch back please ?............
I totally agree about the prices.I live in London but visit Manchester 4-5 times per year. The last time about 3 months ago I had a pint of Wheat Stout and it was 4.25!!!!
I queried this with the barman as I thought it should have been 3.25 ,but 4.25 was correct.
Living in London I am used to high prices but Manchester pubs in general are catching up quickly.
Still it's a fantastic pub and I'll be there again in 2 weeks.
Sadly my comments on 15/04/2011 were premature, prices have once again rocketed. The pub has its own brewery and is not in the city centre, therefore the prices cannot be justified.
Beer quality sound, interior wonderful, yet this nouveau riche desire to attract the "monied" flat dwellers nearby is quite disgusting. A rethink is needed.
Totally agree with arihall on this one. Owing to the prices I haven't frequented this place for a good 12 months now. It's such a shame because it is a diamond that should be available for everyone (not just the rich and well off). As regards the Angel I must admit that I'm not a fan. Smithfields on the other hand is a solid boozer.
Classic Manchester pub, but the prices are getting silly. 1.75 for a half of Chocolate Marble, and many other of their own beers above the 3 a pint mark.
Come on chaps, you've got the profits on the brewing and the retail profits. How can the Angel just down the road sell beer for 2.60?
The Marble is a classic pub, but sadly, a lot of people, myself included, are being priced out.
Going out of my way on a walk around Manchester. Yesterday, I googled "best Manchester Pubs" and this was one in a list of 5 that I haven't been to. Liked the sound of the Micro Brewery around the back. Liked the place a lot - great decoration, not a straight edge in the place and some extravagant tiling on the high ceiling. They had a beer called "Pint" and another called "Bitter". I had the latter and it reminded me of boddingtons a lot. Had a look around my taking a different exit and smelt the brewery part of the business. An experinece not to be missed.
Great pub, decent pint of "Pint" nice interior. Can't comment on prices as wasn't my round (phew).
Great pub with loads of ale on, most of it their own. A pint of Pint is great, not to be missed.
Had food on, menu we thought was quite gastro. I had a burger which was pretty good. My wife had a cheese and onion pasty with homemade chips, this cost over 9 which we thought was at least a pound more than it should have been.
Out the back there is a patio smoking area. Lovely tile work inside the main bar. Very accessable from the city centre, about 5 mins walk to Shudhill, and on several bus routes that stop outside on the Rochdale Road.
It is a nice pub but what about the pump prices ... I was charged 7.90 for two pints, sorry, let me just repeat that for you, yes, 7.90 for two pints. Going out for a pint will become an expensive hobby like yatching or motor sports if the landlord of the marble arch has anything to do with it!!. It annoys me that blokes like the marble arch landlord purport to be into saving the British pub institution, and are into all the camra stuff yet charge prices like these that are destroying that very institution. Come on ,marble arch landlord....... justify your eight quid for just 2 pints!!!
Was in here last night and i always go for the ginger marble ale but for some reason it wasn't on so had a go at the mild which was 6% so quite strong for a mild. Love the interior of this pub and the sloping floor. If you venture into the back room you will see where they brew some of the beer. All the beers are organic and they had 10 handpumps on last night which included one from Liverpool organic. The marble products are also sold in bottles for gift sets. A must visit pub on the outskirts of town.
Called in this evening, my first visit in a quite a while actually. Splendid interior as always, excellent range of beers and prompt service.
Drank a pint of Marble Porter and a guest beer called True Grit, both in superb condition. Prices seem to have stabilized here, which can only be a positive sign.
A+
We always have at least a couple of pints in The Marble when we are in town and we are never disappointed. Great pint of "Pint" followed by "3.9%". Food always looks good but as usual it was busy so we sat in the garden (it was not that cold even for March). I love the interior which is a "must to see" and with plenty of staff serving we didn't wait long for our beer so all-in-all a super pub. You can view the little brewery at the back.
A splendid place - I had a beautiful pint of Pint! Prices are a bit high - I've had cheaper Marble beers nearer centre of town but if it keeps the decor intact, it'll do for me!
One of the best pubs anywhere in the country. I love the look of the place, old-fashioned tiling. Marble beers are top notch, with Dobber and/or Lagonda IPA being my personal favourites. Always get chatting to people in here, just a really friendly, buzzing atmosphere.
I loved the interior of this pub, with its tiled wall and ceiling, its old wooden door and the curiously sloping floor. Its a classic city boozer. The real ales from both the Marble brewery at the back and from guest breweries are another reason to visit. During our visit yesterday, they had their own Stouter Stout, Manchester Bitter, Lagonda IPA, Organic Ginger, Best & 3.9% plus Summer Wines Diablo IPA, Pictish Claymore and Millstone Grain Storm. Broadoak Moonshine was the real cider of choice. I didn't stay long as I wanted to sample some of the other local hostelries. But I saw enough to warrant a few more return visits.
One of the best pubs in the country. The beer is fantastic as is the pub.
I am a reasonably frequent visitor at lunch as my best mate likes it a lot. The food is -interesting. Sometimes I've really enjoyed it, other times when I've been in an awkward mood I've found the range a tad limited. Good choice of beer, and I don't recall a bad pint. There's quite a range of punters at lunch time from workmen in dirty overalls to rather posh 'professionals'. Whoever you are, you won't feel out of place. I advise arriving by 12-00 to be sure of a table though as it is busy and popular.
easily the best pub in manchester on a recent visit
This pub is a belter of a pub.... often call in with my mates and have 4 pints of Lagonda, just enough to get your cheeks having a rosy glow... the food is decent to.. well worth a visit when in Manchester and if you can get one of the window seats thats even better !!
I have to admit I have never ever made it past 6 pints of Lagonda ever....
The best pub in Manchester (if not the UK).
I live in London now but I used to go in every day in the old John Worthington days when I worked at Thomson House.
Returning to the MA a week on Saturday for our annual real ale tour of Manchester. 4th visit and I love the place. Can't wait to get stuck into their beers.
Has the Lot- Great Beer, Great Food, Great Bar Staff
The Marble Arch has been an institution in Manchester for many many years. It used to be known and loved by beer worshipers but over the years it has matured into a pub that pretty much has everything. Without losing its old worldly charm the MA, as it is fondly known, is at ease catering for a bus full of CAMRA members and would be equally so for a couples night, lads/girls night out or family lunch. Unfortunately I live in Cornwall now and so only visit bi weekly when I am in town to watch City, I take my children who are made as welcome as fans of the opposition. Love the Lagonda for a sesh or Marble Ginger as a change. Why not ask them to brew a beer for your birthday/christmas/New Year/Just want a drink party they never let you down! Long live the MA and all who drink in her!

Pretty much peerless in Manchester.
Visited, not to watch the mighty Colchester but with Mrs Monk on a shopping trip to Manchester, who was most impressed with the interior, the best bitter, though not the Manchester, and of course the great food. Superb as ever, although the Marble Ginger ran out to my consternation due a coach party of CAMRA people descending on the pub. Had a very pleasant conversation with a postie and his family, who asked the very demure and shocked Mrs Monk if she was on a pub crawl! Wonderful pub. 9/10
I totally agree that this pub is super. However, the prices are very extortionate, so much so that my visits are very rare indeed!
Fantastic pub, one of the best in Manchester. Never had a bad pint here, and they serve some really interesting beers from their own brewery and elsewhere. Like others, I can't understand why the rating isn't higher.
Excellent pub with a really good selection of home brewed beers, highly recommended.
Wonderful pub, visited on the return from Rochdale watching the mighty Colchester. Lovely interior, great own range of beers including the Marble Ginger which is superb. Looking forward to visiting again in October, and having some of their good food. 9/10
It's the Marble. Beer fantastic, food out of this world, far enough out of town to keep the lazy sheep away, not much else needs saying.
A proper pub! Excellent range of beers.
If you don't like this pub you might as well give up on Pubs and start trainspotting Starbucks.
Great selection of beers, own brewed stuff was very good. Good atmosphere and decent food. Slope down to the bar could prove interesting after one over the eight!
What a great pub! Marble beers up to their usual high standards. Guest beers fantastic, staff helpful. Great surroundings, no your not drunk, the floor does slope. Everything you need in a pub. Perfect.
The best pub I have been to in Manchester and the range of beer second to none - shame it's out of the centre cos when you're with peeps they whinge if you have to go to far and are mostly happy with keg...slowly but surely they're converting though!
A quite stupendous range of beers available yesterday including a good range of their own brewery beers and a couple from Thornbridge. One of the best pubs in the country.
My wife and I have been up to Manchester the last three summers and I have yet to find a pub better than this one. Sensible prices, great local atmosphere and delicious food. Perhaps the best pub in Britain?!
Started off in the angel previously the beer house. Jesus there was more life in a tramps vest! Made a hasty departure to the marble where I had two excellent pints Manchester Bitter and Chocolate Marble. Decided to have a snack 'handcut chips' delicious as per. the garlic mayo dip was lovely too. The only down turn of this place is the volume level of the jukebox. You can hardly hear it. Good job I didnt put any tunes on.
This is such a good pub I can't believe the 7.2 rating. I have never had a bad pint in here, actually I have never had a less than perfect pint here. The food looks great, but they have not forgotten the beer. All round 10/10
This is a great pub for real ale and fine dining. The only concern I have is the price of the beer. Considering there are no transpoert costs incurred because the brewery is at the back of the pub. COME ON MARBLE ARCH, IN THIS TIME OF RECESSION SHOW SOME COMMON SENCE!!!
Without a doubt my favourite pub in Manchester. The beautifully preserved interior puts most other pubs to shame. A full range of their own beers is normally available with interesting guest beers adding to the variety. Prices are rather high for this part of town and it gets horribly overcrowded at the weekend but these are minor gripes on my part.
Worth a visit if you are coming to Manchester especially when a beer festival is on. Watch out for the sloping floor!
A classic pub. Great pub architecture, a dining area towards the back. Had a large selection of their beers in fine form, it was completely packed with a mixed crowd. When in Manchester again I will endevour to visit.
Always make our way up to this pub with its sloping floor and lovely interior tiling, but a little disappointed to find that every pump had a Marble beer on. OK the beer is fine but it is showcasing their own beers and no guests. Always packed so popular for both food and drink. Enjoyed our meal, fish and chips but a little pricey at almost 9. Had the Stouter Stout and Port Stout this visit.
I popped in here tonight on my own, whilst working up here after reading reviews on this site and I was not disappointed. The bar staff were friendly and helpful in their recommendation for which of the 9 real ales I should try first, and it was a cracker, in very good condition. the Marble Arch 'PINT'. I had a taster of some others and had the Marble Arch 'BITTER' and a guest ale. All the beers I had were in great condition, and the pub was a place not to be missed. I shall be returning regularly. I did not try the food and did not see any as I was in there quite late. I was there purely for the beer and for that it gets 10 out of 10. I will make more time for this pub in future visits to Manchester
Worth walking in just to admire the tiling around the front bar room. A remarkable contrast to the cafeteria like restaurant at the back. We liked all five available Marble beers but were surprised at the high prices. We were disappointed at the empties mounting up on all the tables while the barmaid preferred to go out for a cigarette rather than doing her job. Apart from these little gripes, an enjoyable visit.
Usual visit when in the area to this outstanding pub last Saturday. Busy despite the awful weather. Beers in excellant nick - particularly Marble's Dobber & Abbeydale's Moonshine. New food regime - menu's displayed on giant blackboards where the junkbox used to be housed. No food tried by me on this visit, though my friends Pheasant in pot au fier was described as excellant ( despite him grimacing a couple of times biting into bits of shot).
This pub is essential visiting when in Manchester.
Third visit to The Marble. Excellent as ever. Arrived here around 4pm and it was just right. Not too busy. Tried their Pint, Manchester Bitter and JP Best all spot on, although preferred the lighter beers (Pint and Manc Bitter). They do seem to lack a bit of body, having a slightly watery texture, but still good beer and always consistent. 3 or 4 other guests on, but given that wed been in the Smithfield, Bar Fringe and Crown and Kettle beforehand, we could only manage the three pints we were starting to slur at this point! A cracking pub with excellent dcor well worth a visit. Great pub to be in at dusk.
I remember the curries, I worked in Manchester in the early 90's when this and the Beerhouse were the best pubs in the ciry.
If I were to ask what happened to John Worthington and the curries, would anyone know what I'm talking about?
Went today with 3 friends and we were all in agreement that it was one of the best pubs we'd ever visited. I tried 3 of their own beers and they were all very different and all outstanding. Perfect beer, never had better.
Decent pints of Marble Pint and Manchester Bitter in this lovely, cosy, beautifully tiled heritage pub. Marble Ginger a bit of an acquired taste and can't help think that Sharps' Chalky's Bark pulls that kind of thing of rather better.
Made a return visit to the Marble Arch, looking forward to a pint of the pub's own superb Lagonda IPA. Sadly it wasn't on, so I had to make do with two excellent pints of Thornbridge Jaipur instead (slightly expensive at 3.20). I also had a very tasty home-made burger and chips (7.95). Other ales on were Marble's Pint, Bitter, Dobber, Ginger and JP Best. If you only have time to visit one pub in Manchester, this is the one.
Ok fair enough jodineild for you comment yetserday but I have just visited tonight and I can say this: Beer was absolutelty first class, spot on 100%, cannot be faulted on all beers tonight and congrats on 2010 GBG entry
and for any pub, anywhere, the beer is first and foremost. The beer is much before the food, the decor, kids and quizzes, games and jukebox and all that cr*p....beer first!
the food tonight was not first class. Only average. And the price they charge made it quite poor. But, even though there's the 'veggie' menu and 'organic' bullsh*t alleged boll*cks beers this place is....and lets never forget a first class run pub... a perfect capitalist venture! a superb marketing winner day in day out! it is absolutely not to be missed! They know exactly what they are doing in here and good luck to them, may they make bucket loads of money to continue to survive in these tough 'anti-alcohol' times. Forget the average food, ...it will probably get back to form soon and support this Great British establishment! now... rate highly f 10
This pub has been recomended to me many a time, for the beer and the food, but i was so unimpressed, the food was so poor!! The first thing off the menu was a big mouthful of dissapointment (the beef. After that the beer tasting was out the window with it.. tut tut tut what a shame the food was such a let down!
Fantastic beer. Food untested but does seem to have taken a front seat. Great jukebox has been moved? Hope the pub atmosphere is not under threat. That would be a shame but I understand the management's need to attract new custom
I have not found a better pub than this in any city centre. Excellent ales and wonderful ( though not cheap ) food. I look forward to my next trip to Manchester!
Probably the finest quality beer we've found in Manchester, and in one of the most attractive pubs too. It's hard to beat this place. Anyone who knows their beer knows that freshness is everything, and when it's brewed just a few steps away, you really cannot do better.
For my money, both the 'Pint' and 'Manchester Bitter' are superb lower gravity session bitters, but there are plenty of others to try to, such as the 'Lagonda' (5%) and the strange 'Ginger Marble', the latter not quite being to my taste. But there are even guest beers too, giving a superb range.
The building itself is a beauty to behold, with the old-world tiling around the walls & ceiling transporting you to another age. There really isn't much to fault here, it does get a little too crowded at busy times, made worse by tables being swallowed up by food service (truly unnecessary with beer this good) so anyone wanting to sit & soak up the atmosphere may want to avoid peak times. But all in all, this is the kind of pub which spoils most of the others for you.
Roy22 - 20 Aug 2009 18:02 |
Amazing pub! The beer was Exemplary! Please send some of your beers down London way.
If you visit Manchester you have to visit this pub!
Another visit last week, again superb. Beer 1st class and atmosphere excellent as ever, how this pub is only currently number 39 on the top rated section beggars belief.
Classic Pub That has survived being knocked down and flats built good selection of beers ,full of posties ( say hello to postie derek from alty )
An outstanding pub, ornate tiled interior, interesting sloping mosaic floor and the full range of superb Marble Brewery ales ,all of which were on top form. The Lagonda IPA was the pick , dangerously quaffable at 5% and among the guests the Phoenix White Tornado also got top marks. The cheese selection was also excellent and although we didnt try any main courses, the menu looked very interesting and prepared by the resident French chef.Best pub in Manchester, one of the best in the country ,I would strongly advise anyone visiting mancland to pop in and get quaffing.
Visited in May and had a great meal along with a couple of Marble beers. You have to go to see the beautiful and unusual interior with its tiling. The brewery itself can be viewed at the back of the pub. No problems with the beer or the food. Always like to eat here wherever I am drinking in the area.
A bit of a shock, after the quiet of the Crown & Cushion, to find this pub rammed around 4.30 on a Saturday afternoon, but it doesnt take long to see why. The interior hits you as soon as you enter the beautiful glazed tiling on all the walls and ceiling and the attractive mosaic floor, which unusually follows the line of the sloping road. On the walls just below the ceiling the brickwork is engraved all around the pub with the words Brandies, Whiskies, Gins etc. There are ten pumps selling a range of beers from the pub's own brewery, including Mild, Pint, Bitter (imaginative names there!) and Dobber. There were at least two guest ales, including Thornbridge Jaipur. I had a pint of Mild, which was good and two pints of Dobber which was strong but delicious. My friend and I had a steak sandwich and chips, which was nice, but expensive for the amount of food were given (7.50). Easily the best of the pubs visited on this trip and I would imagine a strong contender for the best pub in Manchester.
Fantstic pub and home to the Marble Arch Brewery. Ornately decorated narrow bar area, a small restaurant area next tot he brewing area and kitchen and a small beer garden out the back. We visited on a Sunday lunchtime of a bank holiday weekend. They had seven of their own brews on (Mild, Chocolate Marble, Bitter, JP Best, Lagonda IPA, Stout and Pint), four guest ales (George Wright - Drunken Duck, Thronbridge - Kipling and Ashford, Brampton Golden Bud) and a real cider (Moonshine Cider). Our group worked its way through several of them and everything we tried was in fine form. We also ate and the food was superb too (presumably all home-cooked). A fabulous roast with Yorkshire pudding and fresh veg. Food wasn't cheap but there were certainly no complaints about value for money from our table. Service was also very good. A little way out of the city centre and about a 30 minute walk from the City of Manchester Stadium but a very good place for a pre-match meal and pint!
Absolutely outstanding beer, decor and food. Its current rating of 7.6 by no means does it justice. It is probably the best real ale pub in Manchester, and not in the way that Carlsberg is 'probably the best lager in the world'.
With an appetising menu of both food, ale and a wide selection of international lagers this pub is a Mecca for real ale aficiondo's. The fact that it is always busy is a testament to this.
Finally managed to visit this place after threatening to for a while, fantastic pub with it's own micro brewery, enjoyed very nice pint of the home brewed JP Best, superb tiled interior a joy to behold! Pretty busy which is to be expected when there's a great pub pretty much out on it's own.
You jammy beggars, those who are lucky enough to have this place as a local. A visit yesterday had us on the Manchester bitter, excellent as usual plus JP Best which quite honestly, was out of this world. I barely have the words to describe how good it was.
One slightly sour note was that the folk next to us groused about their nosh in both portion size and that the meat was not cooked as to the request. It looked bloody good to me though..
Roll on another visit soon.
10 real ales, its own brewery, home cooked food couldnt ask for much better...and the MA Ginger beer wasnt bad either
Visited this pub a few times and it's excellent. I went to see the National Squash Championships in Manchester last year and me and a mate ended up in here. Real ale is fantastic, the food is homemade and good value and the atmoshpere is also great. It's also handy for the other M4 real ale pubs, although it's difficult to tear yourself away from the real ale! All in all a great pub, which has been a Main Entry in the Good Pub Guide for many years now. Enjoy.
'Great pub' sums up the Marble Arch. The organic Ginger beer is fantastic and they had a good range of beers on. If you only go to one pub in the area, this has to be it.
Fantastic pub, lovely interior, good jukebox, excellent range of local beers and brews it's own organic beer - what's not to like?!! My favourite pub in the north! Ps Seabrook crisps - get in!!
Visited on 7 March prior to watching Colchester United at Oldham. Marvellous pub, absolutely stunning interior. Beers were superb, tried the Manchester Bitter, Stout and the Ginger - I can still taste the ginger today! Food excellent and not overpriced, nor was the beer, plus a very friendly bunch from Accrington to chat to. Perfect. Just wish it wasn't 200 miles from where I live!
Best in Manchester by a mile. Great range of superb beers, friendly and knowledgable staff, lovely interior. Food looked good but didn't eat this time. A million times better than that feeble excuse for a pub that is the 'Jolly' Angler. Go here instead.
Great 2 see a pub so busy in the current climate, was directed here from the winter ales festival, and what a beautiful pint of hornbeam blackcurrant wheat beer it was, yum, 8/10
Called in while visiting the various festivals in the area, and enjoyed 2 of their own Marble beers and a Howard Town guest. Also had a lovely meal of steak sandwiches that were fantastic. Great atmosphere, and another not to be missed when doing a crawl in the area.
After a few visits, we have (unautorized) elected this pub as No 1 in the world... Well kept ales, nice food, and a fantastic atmosfphere
Stryn - 22 Jan 2009 14:14 |
Still the best in Manchester for both beer and atmosphere. It's got a great looking interior as well (beware of the sloping floor). Full of postmen from across the road at knocking off time and almost always busy. Great selection of cask ales from Marble themselves and several guests plus a decent range of bottled ones. Don't miss it when in Manchester.
Best pub in manchester, bar none
Great food, great beer all the time.
Only minus, doesnt open till 12 on saturdays, could do with opening at 11
One of the best pubs. For people like that like pubs. Simply can't fault it. Ten out of ten
Being a 10 minute walk from the centre of Town this is a great pub to start a crawl of Manchester from. If you don't think eating is cheating there is good food to be had and those who like a good range of well kept ales will not be disappointed. Not quite a local in the City but warm enough to keep you happy. Ambiance and surroundings score well too. And this is proper Manchester whilst there are some yuppie flats around their occupants don't frequent the Marble though if you want a change there are also great lagers and ciders to be had. Oh and Fruesili at 4 a pint not cheap but great drink to refresh the palate! Enjoy

Yes a pub as good as previous reviews have said. The ales were tip top. Beware of the step down on the way in more that the slanty floor I'd say. Jukebox too low for the injection of a quid, and even if it was turned the acoustics would make it inaudible. Nice plates of food were coming out but ale was a higher priority to our party.
Absolute Ale heaven, a beer festival in it's own right. Also did an excellent Steak & Ale pie with fresh veg and chunky chips ... yum. Bit tough to find as it's tucked away in yuppie-ville but well worth the ten minute walk up from Victoria Station. In short much nicer than Manchester's plethora of poncy wine bars and fizz holes.
With up to 12 handpumps this street corner gem of a brewpub offers the best range of ales in the city-something to suit all tastes, including novelty choices such as 'Ginger Marble'-very different, but nice. The tiled walls and floor are wonderful to look at, giving the pub a deserved place in CAMRA's National Inventory of pub interiors and the ambience is fantastic-always busy. Excellent food is served at reasonable prices- again, up there with the best the city has to offer. A bit of a walk from the city centre but it's a must if you're in Manchester, and there are other good pubs nearby so you can make a decet crawl. Only problem is, the place is now surrounded by soulless yuppie flats-but you don't notice when inside. Go there now!
Great pub. Stayed 4 days in Manchester and spent most of my time in thi gem of a pub. Well worth a visit.
Great pub - fascinating interior, friendly staff (especially the big lump of an Irish guy who looks like he'd be handy for keeping order, but without any attitude whatsoever)
Not a real ale afficionado by any means but I had a go anyway. A fine way to pass an afternoon.
Great range of beers. Attracts 'tickers', local PO workers, office types, students. Unrivalled marbled interior, good food. What more could you want?
Super beer as always and the largest chips I've ever seen. Brewery tours available on request. My vote for pub of the year.
excellant traditional boozer, gel boys stay away
Fantasic, well worth the short walk from the City Centre. Great beers from their on site micro brewery (the best Ginger Beer ever), good selection of guest ales, Ciders & Perrys; good food; good atmosphere; great building. Little sun-trap garden area out back. Hard to leave!
My only complaint is against myself - I love the Marble's own beers too much to try the guests most of the time. Excellent food (black pudding salad last time) to soak up the ever more excellent ales - Janine's One my current favourite. Why am I only allowed to mark it 10 out of 10 and not 11 or 12? Well worth the trip every single time
Being a hardened southern beer drinker I took the advice of my brother to seek out this boozer as I didn't know Manchester, and have to agree that the 7.3 rating looks considerably low to me. Marvellous building, brilliant own-brewery beer (Ginger Marble definitely better than the southern Blandford Fly from Dorset) and good guests - the Abbeydale Larceny was luvverly. We had lunch and were so impressed with the whole event that we had the chef over to yield the secrets of the sauce on the spare ribs... Magic pub, great atmosphere. Can't recommend highly enough.
Quite simply, Manchesters best boozer. Quality micro-brewery onsite, well kept ales. Lovely interesting old building, well maintained. always doing good trade. Nice outside area now too.
7.3 rating does not tell the whole story
Another pub on my visit list and I too love to look round the interior tile work. We had a superb meal too on our last visit, and the ale choice and quality is brilliant. Some good strong brews too.
i love this pub..always busy and the food..if a tad pricey always looks and smells gorgeous as its wafted under ya beaks while sampling the many flavoured beers...the ginger marble is second to none..even beating glasgows clockwork beer co...the sloping floor can be a bit hazardous if your a bit tipsy on the way in...they do a good cider from the barrel on the back o bar...anyone visiting manchester should include this on there stagger..short bus ride from shudehill interchange and the bus stops right outside the marble arch..always a warm atmosphere in here..worth a damn good visit.
If there is a better pub/pint anywhere, let me know. Good luck.
Incredible piece of "living Victoriana". Fantastic tiled walls and ceiling and mosaic floors, fireplace, mirror, hanging lamps etc. Manchester bitter a good session ale. Great atmosphere on a Sat night without being overcrowded. Returned on a Sunday for food:-fish and chips, good honest pub food, nicely presented, good value. A wonderful pub.
Words fail me. We visited last night and tried the Manchester Bitter, (1st class) and the other half tried the Ginger 6 (1st class). Enough said.
Best Pub in Manchester by a long mile Superb beer choice - their own Marble beer range on tap and in bottles, plus several guests. Gorgeous old tiled interior. Friendly staff and punters create a convivial atmosphere If you come to Manchester and love pubs, this should be first on your list
Great place, full of character, great selection of beers on good form. Will be back!
Best beer is GSB for me it's like old Boddies with Knobs on!
A first class pub with superb beer, highly motivated and inteligent staff and a wonderful interior. I shall definitely be back when next in Manchester!
What can I say. Paid my first visit there on Saturday during the winter ales festival. What a place! Cannot recommend it high enough. The beer was fabulous, the atmosphere brilliant. A really friendly crowd of beer enthusiasts, students and locals. A must visit place when you come to Manchester. The interior is unique and historic, and yes the pub slopes from front to back, something to watch out for if you've had 'one over the eight'
How I wish there were pubs like this in my town. Unreconstructed, superb beer & a good atmosphere. The Manchester Bitter I tried was excellent. Will return without doubt.
Used to find this place hit and miss but is a great old pub. I love Marble beers and really commend their efforts. Beats Sam Smiths and most if not all city micro brewers!
One of the Best Real Ale Pubs in Manchester, If not The Best
Traditional home-brewer pub reasonably close to Manchester Victoria B R. This is a large single bar pub with a fine ceiling and a deceptive floor that slopes down noticeably to the bar at the far end.
There's a old Harpurhey Brewery mirror ( don't know much about them )
Brewing takes place at the back of the pub and the equipment is visible from a small lounge at the back
As regards the various beers, the Lagonda IPA was a nice pale citrussy IPA, worth sampling. As well as the half dozen or so home-brewed beers, there were a couple of micro guests on when I visited
Brilliant place, always a port of call when in Manchester. Beers always on top form, food is always worth the wait. Decent jukebox Can get very busy. Love the slight slant of the place, especially after a few sherberts!
Truly remarkable and unique pub. Anyone visiting Manchester should check it out. Great beer, great food, great ambiance....nuff said..

I much preferred the Marble before it became a micro brewery. As a genuine free house its choice of guest was always inspired. Still a great experience to visit one of the finest pubs you'll ever visit but it's a shame their own produce will never be able to match what they used to bring in.
10 handpumps, including 4 beers brewed on the premises. Even some decent imported draught lager for those so inclined (but why not try the real stuff?). Great tiled interior. A good 'local' atmosphere, but any visitor to Manchester ought to seek this place out.
Pretty good pub with some decent beer. Try to get there before it's taken over by unMancunians going on and on on and on and on about their over-priced "lofts" (flats)in the Northern (ironic) Quarter and the merits of Arsenal's latest signing.
Just moved to the area and am delighted that Marble Arch is now my local. Good range of both draught and bottled beers (including the top notch Schneider Weisse). Friendly bar staff and relaxed atmosphere to boot. Highly recommended!
Fantastic traditional boozer, great beer, love the interior, love the atmosphere.I live in Brisbane now but someday I am determind to return!
Manchester Bitter superb as ever - even my lager drinking friend loved it. Food has gone more upmarket - good quality but more expensive than before. Great jukebox too!
One of the very best! The Marble pie is absolutely fab!!!!!!!!!
Beer (esp Ginger Marble), Food, decor and ambiance - superlative, best pub in Manchester bar none.
still is a rough pub, still have not got rid of the rabble that go in there!
still fantastic. Consistently the best in every resepct.
Superb in every respect. Fabulous interior, stunning range of beers brewed on the premises as well as five guests. Laid-back and very chatty atmosphere, impossible not to drop into conversation with your neighbours. In a city where there are many stunning pubs to visit (as well as some of the direst to avoid at all costs), this stands out amongst the very best. A pity the Beer House a few yards down the road has closed as they were the perfect double act.
Whilst all other traditional pubs around the Marble Arch fall, the Marble Arch provides the one good reason to take a trip up Rochdale Road.
Fantastic pub! Had a day out in Manchester city centre. Of the 5 pubs we tried this was our fav. The ales were top rate (according to my partner)and said it was one of the best pubs he has been into. We absolutely ADORED the food, the mushroom and avocado filled ciabata with chips was oustanding, gastro pub food in a very traditional pub. Top marks
My favourite Manchester pub. Classic interior, fairly laid-back bohemian atmoshphere, great range of beers both from the Marble brewery and other local brewers. Pictish Porter was particularly splendid.
Cracking pub and locals are always friendly, especially the posties! but bar always seems to be swimming in ale! Not good especially as they use those plastic backed "towels" that soak nowt up! Often visited over many years (from 1986 onwards) when in the hands of different landlords. Changed a lot over the years but tiled interior is excellent
Fantastic. Good atmosphere, great range of ales, good food. Could be described as heaven! Close!
Superb pub and beers.
This is top hole. I'm a sucker for that whole Victorian tile thing, which this place does in spades.
The back bar/eatery is a bit odd mind - puts me in mind of a 1950s fish and chip restaurant.
Not necessarily a bad thing, just saying.
And the beer and the food were all good, Fefinitely worth a visit.
Beers are home produced and exceptional - No sign of this pub disappearing in the medium term as it is a listed building. Make sure you try the Marble Ginger and the Lagonda.
Now this is a proper pub!
This is a seriously good pub. I thoroughly enjoyed the Ginger Marble and one called Lagonda. They were having a Celtic theme to their ales, with one from Cornwall, one from Wales (I think) and 3 from Scotland including a prize-winning one from Cairngorm. Food first class (portions legendary), staff hard-working and friendly. The high spot of a crawl round Manchester.
Cracking pub, best time to go is early Friday evening - great atmosphere with all the posties in from the sorting office round the corner. The micro-brewed beers can be hit & miss - but the new tawny ale is a tasty one.
This is a great pub - yep, one of the best in Manchester. The interior is pretty much unchanged from the last century and the building drips with character. Unfortunately, the beers, brewed in house, don't. The Marble Arch is a microbrewery, and also a vegan one, if memory serves me right. The range of home produced beers is somewhat lacking in character and taste - they're OK, but if you've just staggered back from a beer festival, you'd probably ask yourself what all the fuss is about. Nonetheless, recommended.
This is a truly marvellous establishment.Has its own brewery which produces high quality ale (Ginger marble is a must!) and theres also a selection of european beers.Theres a very distinctive sloping mosaic floor which really adds to the character of the place and ive always found the clientele to be very varied.Probably the best pub in Manchester
Excellent range of beers including own brewed and bottle continental. The food also deserves a mention - good quality and reasonable price. A little gem of a place.
Fantastic pub. One of the best in Manchester. Always has large variety of beer inc. marble beers which are always well kept.
Tony Blair would probably disapprove. Everytime I go to this pub I get bladdered!
Probably the finest pub in Manchester.
They always have a wide selection of beers as well as a couple from their own brewery. The Ginger Marble being my own favourite.
It's a little bit out of the way, but well worth the 5 minute walk from Swan street.
Very interesting drinking establishment. The choice of beverages is varied as is the clientele. Well recommended. Please take care of the sloping floor on your way to the toilets it's a bit of a laugh when you've had a few to many!!!!!
An excellent pub, try the honey beer it's lovely!
This pub is one of the hidden gems of the real ale world in Manchester. I meet with friends once a month and enjoy the many different beers and great Victorian interior. There are also 3-4 proper traditional pubs nearby. well worth a visit to this little know part of the city.
Just came up for the Semi final and thought this pub was superb, great beer .excellent interior and a good ambience, nearly made up for losing! Please dont let any scouser in here ,they will ruin it ,they were a right horrible lot!
Ive only been to this place once but it is now on my list of favourite Manchester pubs. The high vaulted ceiling, the sloping mosaic floor and the solid wooden furniture give it a bit of a beer hall feel. The beer was excellent on our visit and had we not been on our third day of drinking, with another three pubs still to find, we would have stayed longer. Will definitely pay another visit next time I am in Manchester.
a very pubby pub which brews it own beers in distinctive styles. A 'must' for any trip to the area.
I think this is the most fantastic pub in the world, 9 real ales (4 brewed on site) very friendly staff, good traditional food, and amazing unique victorian interior...its one of a kind, a gem!! well worth the trip...
Good beer, nice ambience, nice friendly staff, grotty enough to keep the pretentious out but not grotty enough to attract lager losers.
A must visit - superb tiled interior, sloping floor, great atmosphere and in house brewed beer.
I think this may be the best pub I have ever been to. The large windows, the high glazed ceiling, the sloping floor. Or was it the brewed on the premises beer, that were all very good. It may have been the cost of the beers (1.80 to 2.20 per pint). This is a very good pub and I want to go there again. Why doesn't London have these type of pubs?
Well worth the trip up Rochdale Road. Sadly the nearby Pot of Beer is no more. An architectural wonder with good food, a brewhouse (book your tour at the bar) and quality beers. Bring back the beer garden!

Beer very poor on my recent visit
Steve - 30 Aug 2004 21:34 |
If you only have time for one pint in the Northern Quarter make sure it's the Manchester Bitter at The Marble Arch !! Enough said.
bob mason - 15 Aug 2004 02:11 |
under par, good beer and building, but the management couldn't find a pile of hay stacks under a needle
dave - 30 Mar 2004 17:33 |
Ginger Marble is a truly wonderful Ginger Beer, as are all the other house brewed beers. Extended their range of other guest beers in 2003, following the demise of the Beer House down the road.
frank - 26 Dec 2003 13:47 |
cloudy marble fantastic. the chocolate brew is better. caution very busy near christmas due to post office sorting office next door. we all need a christmas do.
jocky - 2 Nov 2003 22:35 |
The "Manchester Bitter" is top notch, N/4 too is v.good. good choice, friendly staff AND locals. GO THERE.
Bill - 2 Oct 2003 14:48 |
The Marble Arch is a fantastic little pub - The usual Barman on Sunday's, Paul, is wonderful, and pulls the best pint of Ginger Marble - which I have fallen in love with
Aussie - 2 Sep 2003 09:55 |
The best pub in Manchester. The Pot of Ale just around the corner is also excellent. Shame that the Beer House just down the road is a shadow of its former self ....
Monty - 13 Aug 2003 12:17 |
This pub is a real find with its selection of beers and unaltered architecture and decoration, staff were also friendly. Recommended to all.
Les Laws - 11 Aug 2003 13:18 |
Brilliant mosaic floor, and the tiles [even the ceiling is tiled!]. Is the mirror real or repro? Ginger Marble most enjoyable
Superb pub, superb beer, superb decor, friendly bar staff - but watch out for some of the locals!
Andy - 9 Jun 2003 15:53 |
Superb pub! GO there!!!!!
