user reviews of the Sligachan Hotel, Sligachan

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

May 2011. One night in the hotel followed by a few in the hotel-run bunkhouse.
It seems that the general consensus is that the hotel is in a great location but is sadly let down by everything else and I cannot offer anything vastly different.
The beer is not particularly great and is poorly kept. I had cloudy beer on more than one occasion, caused by the uptake pipe resting in the sediment. The whisky selection is utterly vast; you will be lucky to find a more comprehensive assembly anywhere.
Ther staff were perfectly attentive and friendly, but as they were all female, I would say that.
The toilet block is in a bizarre position in the middle of the pub rather than at one end. The smell, of both organic compounds and the chemicals used to destroy them, permeated pretty much all the bar. Not nice with your haddock and chips. The toilet block effectively creates a back room which contains pool tables and a host of arcade games. A total waste of space if you ask me. If I wanted arcades, I'd go to Blackpool, not Skye.
The food was acceptable but rather overpriced, although not scarily so.
The hotel itself is living on reputation and is massively overpriced. The rooms are nicely decorated and spotlessly clean but are really little more than travelodge standard, yet cost twice as much.
The bunkhouse is decent enough, but needs more toilets. Unfortunately, I had a bunk underneath the sleeping walrus from hell, so I can't comment on the comfort levels as I didnt get any sleep.
Overall, the Sligachan set up as a whole was rather disappointing and seems to be very aware of its captive audience. A pity really; I was expecting better.

An average pub with a - largely - captive audience made up of the people staying either at the hotel or at the campsite opposite. Would not recommend on a friday or saturday night with everyone getting pissed up and lairy after a days walking/climbing (I was doing the same, admittedly, but somehow can manage to keep my voice below 90db!) The food was good, plentiful and hearty and the beer was OKish - definitely not the best, but not the worst neither. Sunday night was altogether quieter and had a much better atmosphere. The place has the biggest selection of whisky I've ever seen too.

It looks as if this is the place that everyone loves to hate so I will stick my twopenny worth in on the other side. I spent a couple of nights in the campsite opposite last week and a couple of evenings in the bar. There were four ales on, all brewed in house and though perhaps not the best beer in the world I have certainly had much worse. Between us we sampled all four beers and thought them all good. I was on the Skye Ales and have no complaints. There was nothing homebrewish about them, It sounds to me as if the last reveiwer has an axe to grind. The food was a touch on the expensive side but not by much and the quality was good. The staff were helpful and pleasant and the atmosphere was good. It also stocked more whiskies than I have ever seen. I don't know if there have been changes to staff or management but I found nothing wrong with the place.

The comment submitted in May 2005 must have been referring to a visit over 2 years before as the Isle of Skye Brewery (who brew the excellent Red Cuillin) has not supplied this place since early in 2003. Sligachan now has its own brewery (The Cuillin Brewery - now why did it choose THAT name?) so please don't confuse their homebrew-like beers with the superb ones from Isle of Skye Brewery.

Not Impressed

This pub is in a great location, looks good from the outside, but from the moment you walk through the door it's all downhill. Real Ales are in poor condition, strange seeing they are brewed next door, service is poor and prices very touristy!! Cold inside with the meagre fire being hogged by wet day walkers. Toilets stink and their central location allow this smell to spread. Get a mortgage for food.

Very average pub. Two real ales on, neither kept well. Food looked okay but pricy but very, very midgey and beer disappointing given that I believed there to be half a dozen+ interesting ales on.

It boasts of home cooking but fails to say the homecooking is actually Hotel Caterers `instant mash` with consistancy of wallpaper paste and NOT real potatoes. Veg is frozen and bland. The Chilli con Carne was just a small portion of mince on a bed of rice..and certainly was NOT chilli. ( the rice was cooked to perfection though). I have eaten hotter ice cream. Prices are extortionate to a captive market, and attitude of staff really sucks big time. Very complacent staff and pathetic meals. DON`T stop here for a meal. Beer is almost 1.00 dearer than anywhere else on Skye. Whoever owns this hotel clearly isn`t customer focused. I urge you to drive past and try ANYWHERE else on the beautiful Isle of Skye.

Drove from Bristol to get here. Took us about 11 hours. We go to the bar and the following happens over a period of 2 hours.
1. My friend misses off a meal from our food order by accident and gets sarcasm.
2. My friend asks for a Whiskey, and I'm still decideing what to have and the guy says he hasn't got all day!!!!!!!
3. I order 2 pints of Guiness. The guy pours them(half way to let them settle) then walks away and starts collecting dirty plates and glasses from the tables, another bartender eventually comes to my rescue.
I guess the guy in question is Bar manager. He's grey haired, middle aged and if he asks are you being served I recomend you say yes thanks and wait for someone less poisonous to serve you.
Oh yes and they have the flags of all the teams England had to play in there group
during the world cup!! Yeah THAT CHILDISH. Might as well write no English on the door. DO THEY REALISE PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY HERE ON HOLIDAY!

Not quite the same place as I remember thirty odd years ago and I cannot comment on the food, but there wasn't anything wrong with the beer I sampled on a recent visit.

We were half way through our starters when our main courses were delivered, when I commented that it was the first time I'd ever been anywhere that did that the man said "fine" and snatched the plates away and stormed off to the kitchen - despite my protests that I still wanted the slice of toast he'd brought to keep my toddler occupied.

When I ordered Heather Ale for my husband someone came to the bar to complain that the beer was not cold and the barman said that it was just the temperature the taps were, and they were all like that.

My husband ordered spicy bean casserole which contained beans in no sauce and my mother-in-law had red veggie curry which consisted of liquid, grease with a tiny amount of veg.

Overall bad food, bad service & bad beer - would never go there again and would not recommend it to anyone. If it's a great location you're after you're spoiled for choice on Skye, so I don't see that as an excuse!

Anyone who moans about this pub is barking. Location is unbeatable - plus great ale and enough tables to get a plate of grub no matter how busy it is.

Yes, it's not gourmet fare, and teh bar is a bit pre-fab, but that is splitting hairs & missing the point.

Many a good night (and day, when the hurricanes come) spent in this place. Terrific.

I completely agree with philm, The place has no character whatsoever,if you want a good meal and a decent pint then go 9 miles northwest to the village of Carbost. There you'll find a beautiful lochside pub called The Old Inn.

This pub is a disgrace. The Seumas Bar is a large canteen style area completely lacking in character and atmosphere - its only purpose being to get as many people in as possible. One or two of the staff are friendly, but most appear miserable at best. The food can best be described as average, and when I asked for an extra piece of bread to go with my Cullen Skink I was told that it was 50p per slice. The only reason this place is busy is due to the captive market at the campsite across the road. My advice - stay at the campsite in Portree, and eat and drink at the Isles Inn.

Good selection of beers (hand pulled of course!). Brewed in the Isle of Skye. Red Cuillin ale worth trying.
Top range of whiskies all on optics (50+) around the top of the bar. Not cheap, but a long way from any civilisation.
Camp site next door. They also rent out cottages and have a bunkhouse. Spectacular views. Its the starting place for some magnificent walks into the Cuillin. There can be few better situated pubs in the world! Id avoid visiting in the summer school holidays though when prices are high and the place is packed.

Great kids play area, camp-site, the best setting in the world, even good beer. Let down by the modern, soul-less extension and the average food.
