| May 2011. One night in the hotel followed by a few in the hotel-run bunkhouse. It seems that the general consensus is that the hotel is in a great location but is sadly let down by everything else and I cannot offer anything vastly different. The beer is not particularly great and is poorly kept. I had cloudy beer on more than one occasion, caused by the uptake pipe resting in the sediment. The whisky selection is utterly vast; you will be lucky to find a more comprehensive assembly anywhere. Ther staff were perfectly attentive and friendly, but as they were all female, I would say that. The toilet block is in a bizarre position in the middle of the pub rather than at one end. The smell, of both organic compounds and the chemicals used to destroy them, permeated pretty much all the bar. Not nice with your haddock and chips. The toilet block effectively creates a back room which contains pool tables and a host of arcade games. A total waste of space if you ask me. If I wanted arcades, I'd go to Blackpool, not Skye. The food was acceptable but rather overpriced, although not scarily so. The hotel itself is living on reputation and is massively overpriced. The rooms are nicely decorated and spotlessly clean but are really little more than travelodge standard, yet cost twice as much. The bunkhouse is decent enough, but needs more toilets. Unfortunately, I had a bunk underneath the sleeping walrus from hell, so I can't comment on the comfort levels as I didnt get any sleep. Overall, the Sligachan set up as a whole was rather disappointing and seems to be very aware of its captive audience. A pity really; I was expecting better. Igwinder - 10 Jun 2011 10:33 |
| An average pub with a - largely - captive audience made up of the people staying either at the hotel or at the campsite opposite. Would not recommend on a friday or saturday night with everyone getting pissed up and lairy after a days walking/climbing (I was doing the same, admittedly, but somehow can manage to keep my voice below 90db!) The food was good, plentiful and hearty and the beer was OKish - definitely not the best, but not the worst neither. Sunday night was altogether quieter and had a much better atmosphere. | It looks as if this is the place that everyone loves to hate so I will stick my twopenny worth in on the other side. I spent a couple of nights in the campsite opposite last week and a couple of evenings in the bar. There were four ales on, all brewed in house and though perhaps not the best beer in the world I have certainly had much worse. Between us we sampled all four beers and thought them all good. I was on the Skye Ales and have no complaints. There was nothing homebrewish about them, It sounds to me as if the last reveiwer has an axe to grind. The food was a touch on the expensive side but not by much and the quality was good. The staff were helpful and pleasant and the atmosphere was good. It also stocked more whiskies than I have ever seen. I don't know if there have been changes to staff or management but I found nothing wrong with the place. gdm - 23 Aug 2010 21:41 |
| The comment submitted in May 2005 must have been referring to a visit over 2 years before as the Isle of Skye Brewery (who brew the excellent Red Cuillin) has not supplied this place since early in 2003. Sligachan now has its own brewery (The Cuillin Brewery - now why did it choose THAT name?) so please don't confuse their homebrew-like beers with the superb ones from Isle of Skye Brewery. scotsgrey - 1 Sep 2009 15:23 |
