The Lamb is a Proper pub.. Harvey's Sussex best in top notch condition. Lively, friendly bar to the left with lounge to right in a beautiful ancient building. You can also take your beer to the outside tables next to the church.

Can't believe this one not in Good Beer Guide 2012. Looks a bit foody but passed my ultimate test i.e. a spanking good pint first off on a lunchtime session, ideal temperature, great taste. Top marks.

Food is acceptable though I wouldn't say it''s good. Beer prices are 12-15% higher than other local bars

Yet again the landlord of this gorgeous building has put the prices up and yet again the ay he does it he flys of to australia. Not really surprised but atleast the customers once again know they are paying for it, this must be the 4th time its happened. No wonder the pub is mostly empty during the week

One of my favourite Sussex pubs - recently ate there with a friend early evening Tuesday. The Haddock in ale batter & chips went down a treat. Staff were friendly, as was the landlord.
The Harveys in this pub is always well kept too, so I felt it only fair to indulge in a couple of pints...

Good Beer guide???? Not any more

Great building but seriously over priced . Recent new landlord who is always abroad ,staff very cocky as a result .
circ 1180 pub that has been done up by julian clary lookalike (local council should look how this LISTED building has being treated)
Food 10.00 for a burger i kid you not , Carling 3.70 a pint need one say more apart from spend your money wisely ,SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I occasionally go to Eastbourne and would have reccommended The Lamb previously, but it has been degraded to a remarkable degree as I discovered recently after having not visited it for a few years. The interior has been altered out of all recognition and is grotesquely at varience with the ancient history to of the establishment which originated in 1180. It has all the ambience of a down-market pub in the East end of London and I honestly don't know how they got permission to do such damamge to such an historic building.

Another visit. I never find this pub at all welcoming. It seems more and more to be pushing the food and not the beer - mind you the drinks are almost expensive as a meal. Unfriendly and seems to appeal to Waitrose guys and gals. Suspect that there would be more atmosphere and welcome on the moon.

Unfriendly, expensive with indifferent service. A shme as the building and position are good. Beer OK but over-priced. Wouldn't rush bck.

Have visited this pub on a number of occasions since arriving in Eastbourne, so feel that I am now able to leave a review .
This pub is under new ownership and they have apparently spent quite a lot of money on a refurb, but I can't really comment on that as I didn't see the pub before the improvements.
A really nice atmosphere in the pub when I dropped in with a few friends just before Xmas, both customers and bar staff very congenial.
The pub was quite crowded when we visited, but aren't all pubs in the run up to Xmas.
Would really reccomend this pub if you want a drink in a unique setting-there was apparently a pub on this site in 1180!
Only one minor complaint, how about some good looking barmen for us girls-only appeared to be women serving when we there!]
I will have to try the food next time, as the food that I saw being taken to the tables looked really scrummy!!

Grade II listed building adjacent to the church: olde worlde feel with lots of rooms and plenty of genuine half-timbering (dating from the 16th century) above a vaulted medieval undercroft, probably contemporaneous with the church (hence the 1180 claim). It claims to be the oldest hostelry in England - doubtless along with many others.

The beers - Harveys - were well kept, and I didn't eat here, but the disinterested service during the middle of the day reflects others' comments. Not bad, but could be something really special.

Good range of Harveys beers & well looked after. Liver & onion mash had swede, broccoli & carrots - almost a nutritionally complete meal. Interior was worth admiring and plenty of places to sit. Slightly pricy compared to other pubs though.

A very interesting old pub (although the 1180 claims seem very dubious), with a good range of Harveys beers (including a nice pint of Armada). However, I thought that the bar staff left something to be desired, attitude-wise. Good, but could do (much) better...

Nice old warren of a pub a round a mile inland from the town centre. Only had time for one pint (Sussex Best in good but not quite peak condition), the full range of Harvey's regular and seasonal ales was available.

have been in here a couple of dozen times over the last two years. bar staff seem far more interested in texting friends than serving and on the lst visit the two of them virtually ignored one bar and concentrated on talking to the regulars. beer was good though which was why i have persevered. A pub who lives on its reputation, I'm afraid.

17 bell ringers on an outing, booked a week ahead and gave food orders in advance. Over an hours wait for average food on cold plates. Had to phone around to re-schedule afternoon bell tower bookings. Very poor considering we booked ahead. Sorry to people who came in after us, they're probably still wating. Well kept beer but staff didn't know prices, (I think they were regulars who felt sorry for the staff and wanted to help out)

This is an old pub with the vaulted cellar apparently dating back to 1180. The main bar is no spring chicken itself as you can see the beams bowing and the old subsidence. The olde world feel is topped off by the dark ornate furniture that is all around the pub. There is a Perspex covered hole that looks down to the old cellar, but the bulb had blown a while ago so it just looks like a bottomless pit. This is a Harveys pub so there were 3 Harveys beers available that were in good nick.

I found the barmaid to be very friendly and the regulars in pig corner polite.

My only gripe with this place is the lack of beer garden and having to smoke in the street or on the bench next to the pub. It makes it look like yobs are loitering when in fact they are just enjoying the evening with a pint and a demon cigarette. Maybe some of the carpark could be utilised for this.

All in all a great pub that I will be visiting again.

I'm not often in Eastbourne, and not familiar with its pubs, but I must say I was very favourably impressed on a chance visit to The Lamb recently.
It's a great big pub, with several different drinking areas; the atmosphere seemed comfortable and relaxed in all of them.
The beer was excellent -Harvey's Hadlow, Best and Armada on when I was there.
Altogether somewhere I'd be pleased to visit again when the occasion arises.

A bit disappointed with this pub on what was my first visit. Have to agree with 'leggless' in that it seems amazingly short of atmosphere considering the age of the place. Less than cheerful staff didn't help. On the upside was the food, which was superb. Conclusion: Not worth the 10-15 minute walk from the town center, unless you're eating.

Some comments slightly unfair.Nearly all pubs have realised that selling rubbish to rubbish is profitable in days when pub going has lost its appeal. The result ,of course , is that they spiral down in to "stews".

However the bar staff are great and the barmaids are the best and the most beautiful around !!

Good pint of Harveys, but soft drinks overpriced at 2 plus for a small Diet coke.Pub lacked atmosphere for its age and seems to have lost a certain mystic which was apparent on my last visit. The Prince Albert over the road seems a better choice when in area.
leggless - 11 Dec 2007 23:20
great looking pub from the outside but it was very quiet when I went on a saturday evening.
brightondrinker - 28 Nov 2007 21:05
Another brewery pub so a good range of Harveys and some great Harveys-related photos en route to gents (incl one of handpumps in the brewey shop, Lewes, which I missed on my visit). No chavs, although I appreciate they usually come out to play after sun-down, just locals watching the racing when we were there. Plaque on house opposite states that Dickens used to be a regular visitor, no doubt also to the Lamb for a tipple. Btw, what's that indoor well by the loo all about?
trainman - 29 Jul 2007 08:46
This used to be one of the best pubs in Eastbourne. Now it is just another home to the chavs. What a shame.

This pub seems to have lost alot of its charm in recent years. The customers are becoming younger which is good for money over the counter, but local-ness, if there is such a word, is lost completely. The food is good but overpriced. Not as welcoming to single ladies as my others in the area.
spritzerqueen - 25 Jul 2006 13:35
Terrific pint of Harvey's 'Tom Paine' but sandwich very average.

Fantastic pint of Harveys, but food I had was very ordinary and overpriced.
eastyboy - 6 May 2006 17:31
Oldest pub in town, full of oak and packed at weekends. Has an array of people. Comfortable and definetly worth a look in. If you like this, you'lll love the counting house round the corner behind Safeways.
