The Black Lake Inn, Meir Heath

Always been nice here for just a drink, comfortable sofas etc but I have eaten here a few times recently after hearing good reports.
Food is good quality and reasonably priced with great thick, crispy real chips. Service is good as the pub is well staffed friendly too.
On each of three occasions everyone in our group (5 or 7 people) said the food was excellent.
My one gripe, really petty I know, is in a pub where they take care in what they serve and that goes to the trouble of making real chips, why do they serve those disgusting frozen onion rings that are made from mushed onion. It surely can't be too much trouble to cut and batter a few fresh onion rings to go with a steak. If it is just leave them off.

Rated 8/10 (1 off for the onion rings)

The George and Dragon, Rough Close

Used to use this pub all the time with large group of friends either dining inside in winter or using the then excellant beer garden in summer.

The pub went downhill after owners sold to small chain and managers didn't put much effort in so we all stopped going.

After hearing the George had changed hands again we tried it again and we were really disappointed, The pub was dirty, the beer garden was a mess with litter that was weeks old, the grass although recently cut in the centre was 2 foot high around the edges abd complete with nettles.

We were going to eat but decided to go somewhere cleaner.

A real shame for what was and could be again a great pub.

The Burton Stores, Hanley

Known tto locals as "The Pig Pen" you'll have to go to find out why.

The White Lion, Knighton

Real country pub with real log fires, a very friendly atmosphere and great food. Three real ales Bombardier, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Pedigree, alll kept superbly. Food and service was top class great quality and value for money will certainly go back soon.

The Swan Inn, Stone

Excellent drinkers pub. Joules Priory Bitter is superb. On the negative side other beers are all from micro breweries and if Priory is off (which is a regular occurance I have to go elsewhere. For me and several like minded friends this pub would benefit graetly from having a main stream real ale guest for us disappointed Priory drinkers such as Wadworths 6X,
Fullers London Pride, Mansfield Old Bailey, Everards Tiger or Old Original, Camerons Bombardier or even Pedigree or Bass.
Sorry for the moan only do it because I want to drink in the Swan more often

Post Of Stone, Stone

Everyone knows what Wetherspoons are like but unlike most others this is clean without the normal tramps in there all day.
Food is better than other Wetherspoons obviously the same stuff but better cooked and presented. Friendly staff but not enough of them at busy times which is usual for Wetherspoons.

Black Cock Inn, Blythe Bridge

This pub is now completely non smoking. A brave move which should be supported by all non smoking real ale drinkers.

The beer is still excellent especially Joules Priory and Camerons Bombardier.

Food is also excellent try the "two beef baps with roast potatoes and gravy" for 3.99!

Red House, Caverswall

Nice pub. Excellant "Real" food highly recommended.
Real ale kept well, always one guest beer.

The Huntsman, Cheadle

A decent pub reasonable cheap food, good beer and pleasant service.
Real fires for that winters day.
I think I'll go there now!

The Smithfield Hotel, Blythe Bridge

Changes manager every other week so never know if its open or not.
Good if your trains late or cancelled (as often happens) as its about 50 yards from Blythe Bridge station and from several such experiences you have enough time to sink your pint and stll catch your train as you see or hear the level crossings drop!

The Duke of Wellington, Blythe Bridge

Typical village pub a bit unfriendly at times if you're not a regular.
London Pride always good regular guest beer a bit hit and miss so if you go just for the real ale use the Black Cock just up the road.

The Mainwaring Arms, Newcastle under Lyme

Paul (comment below) is talking about the Sneyd Arms in Keele not the Mainwaring Arms Whitmore (he must be a Sstudent durh!)
Both pubs are excellent though with well kept real ales, real fires, good food and pleasant atmospheres.

The White Cock, Blythe Bridge

Closed at present (17/11/04) but should re open soon.

The Roebuck Inn, Forsbrook

Proper pub.
Recent refurb improved this small pub no end.
A Bass house it also boasts 4 or 5 guest beers at a time which are kept well but not great.

The Black Lake Inn, Meir Heath

Very very expensive food, good quality but very very expensive.

Beer also at premium price but on the plus side a very comfortable pub with leather sofas and "real" gas fires.

The Weathervane, Meir

Typical chain pub. Good for people with kids even though there are no facilities for them.

Beer ok.

Can be very rough especially since change of manager
