The Pineapple, Amersham Common

The Pineapple closed a couple of years ago, the building is now a Thai restaurant.

Four in Hand, Keswick

Bar staff seemed a little disinterested and I would describe the decor as "having seen better days" rather than grubby. These are the bad points.

On the up-side, the beer was very good, Jennings beers plus excellent Black Sheep. The food was also good, particularly the pies which were homemade (or if not, very good imitations of homemade). Chicken goujon starter was average but the main courses and deserts were very good and generous portions too.

Mill Inn, Mungrisdale

Had lunch here after a morning's walking on the nearby fells and it was superb. The homemade pies were absolutely delicious.......and you can buy them to take home too!!

Jennings beers were very good. Staff were friendly and service was good.

It was fairly busy on a weekday lunchtime.

Would highly recommend.

The Carpenters Arms, Marble Arch

Atmosphere: Friendly atmosphere but not too crowded for a West End pub, with a mixed clientele. Lots of TV screens make it a great venue for watching sport. Staff were friendly and efficient. All in all a very, very good pub.

Beers: 6 real ales available that change regularly. Harveys is a staple with other beers from small breweries. I sampled 5 of the 6 that were on and they were all excellent.

Food: No food available in the evening, but several customers brought in their own food from nearby take away outlets.

This is part of the small "Market Taverns" pub group that also own the Market Porter.

The Market Porter, Borough

Atmosphere: Despite being quite full of suits this place has quite a relaxed atmosphere and a bit of a buzz to it. Even on a November evening there were crowds of people spilling out onto the surrounding pavements and into the edges of Borough Market. Sometimes when a pub gets busy service can suffer, but not here. Plenty of efficient bar staff keep the beer flowing freely.

Beers: There were about 9 or 10 beers which kept changing as one barrel ran dry and another one was started, and that's just the bitter!! There was also a large choice of lagers for those so inclined.

Food: The pub doesn't serve food in the evening but right next door is a bistro/cafe that have a stall out front serving delicious sausage baps, what more could you possibly want?

This excellent pub belongs to the small "Market Taverns" group.

The Saracens Head, Amersham

I live in Amersham and this is my favourite pub here (although I don't visit it frequently enough to consider myself a "regular").
Very friendly place that serves good quality "pub food" both lunchtimes and evenings. As a previous review commented it is tied to Greene King so there isn't a large choice of real ales, but thet have a reasonable wine list & choice of malt whiskies.
It's fairly small so can get crowded, but there is a patio are out back if the weather's OK.
I would give a slightly higher mark if they had the odd guest beer.
