Great range of great beers, from fantastic breweries. I had a couple of different pints, both of which were very tired and way past their best. It seems there are just too many beers on at one time. A real shame as half the amount of beers could be twice as fresh. Still, there was a great atmosphere and I'd go back.

hmmm Is it me or does that review from ilovehove sound like a press release from the people that manage the Coopers Cask? All I know is my beer was off and I was too depressed to take it back...

The Lion And Lobster, Brighton
Sorry Sastrugi, this is one of Brighton's last Free Houses. There's no brewery to complain to.

Right I may owe this place an apology. 6 months after opening Zel are finally selling some ale at the alehouse. Had a decent pint of W J King Red River last weekend. They had Deuchars IPA on too.

The term 'student' can be used here. Not necessarily meaning someone in education, but meaning that largest of the Brightonian tribes, often called Crispin or Huw, spending their parents' money on daft haircuts, rare grooves and Marlborough Lights. You'll find them here talking VERY LOUDLY about the night they're going to put on at some grim club and the perils of globalisation (while swigging their multi-national owned global brands like Stella and Guinness.) They're easily impressed by the flowery language on the menus, and don't notice how ordinary the food is. Greene King's dull ales are available if, like me, you end up going there with a gorgeous girl who thinks it's great.

Imagine your gay uncle bought his tiny council house, spent a fortune on paint affects and stick-on-Victorian mouldings. Then he closed the all the doors and chain smoked Rothmans for 5 years. That's what this place is like inside, faux marble paint affects and brass guns on the wall. It's great though. Warm and friendly and the Badger Bitter has been fresh every time I've been in. If you can't face the crush of the Freemasons, nip down the side road and pop in here.

Sausage and mash is very good value, it might be a pound more than microwaved gonads elsewhere, but these are the real deal from Richardson's. The only Zel pub worth visiting. Not too keen on Badger beers but they're always perfectly kept. Gorgeous landlady.

Quadrant "Ale House" is open. Only it doesn't serve any decent ale. The same old stuff as all the other Zel bars all over town. Bomadier and Greene King Speckled Hen. No sign of any Belgian beer. Such a waste of a Free House. Refit is pretty good though. It might be yet another Zel bar but don't forget it nearly became rubble. At least there's hope someday it might be leased to someone else and we can have a decent pint.

Food is fantastic. Be nice if the management/leasees had the confidence to throw away the laminated menus and just go with their excellent specials. Shame it's owned by Greene King and you're forced to drink their bland ale. 10/10 food. 01/10 drink.

Part of the local Zel chain it looks like an improvement on the previous Polar Bar. Themed as a 'Real Pub' but the refit is only skin deep. My mate ordered a couple of pints of Bomadier, they were off and stunk of vinegar. Barman refused to change them saying 'you'll probably only complain about the Directors'. As is usual with Zel bars, lots of money and effort spent on decoration but no staff training. Avoid.

The Temple Bar, Brighton
No proper beer available yesterday, just the usual Luton-brewed bogus imports. Had to find another pub for a group of friends to meet in. The Temple Bar was as grim as hell but at least you could get a pint.
