The Old Swan, The Lee

Recently visited this place and was SO disppointed. In theory it has everything going for it - beautiful location - a proper pub!

BUT - we really felt there was an arrogance about how it was run. Feels like it is concentrating on the unimportant things i.e. it had a really whizzy frothy coffee machine - but - when I asked for a ham ploughmans rather than one of the 3 cheese ones they offer, I was told flatly 'no'. Was very disappointed! They had hand carved ham on the menu - but would not do me a ploughmas! Ended up having a salad - but had to pay extra for 2 pieces of regular sliced bread. Husband had underwhelming cheddar ploughmans. We had to wait around 25 mins for these two salads - surprising as it wasn't that busy.

So our high hopes of a good lunch really were dashed! We won't be returning - there are heaps of better in the area. What a shame..

The Dolphin, Robin Hood's Bay

Stayed in Robin Hood Bay last weekend and made this pub our temporary evening home. Made to feel very welcome - excellent beer and wonderful food! Chunky chips to die for (more like roast spuds!), very fresh salads (always rare in pubs!) - generally delicious food!

Only negative thing I could find to say is that it got very smokey which was a problem (for us at least) when eating in the bar area - but guess that won't be an issue for much longer!!

Wonderful pub - make sure you hunt it out!

The Clachaig Inn, Clachaig

Visited the Glencoe area last week - was looking forward to sampling this pub - but VERY disappointed. Terrible service I'm afaid and an uninspiring menu led to us scarpering after just one drink. What a shame!

The Stackpole Inn, Stackpole

Escaped into this lovely place to escape the rain last weekend. Very nice roast beef with all the trimmings. This place has definitley ventured into the 21st century and offers a welcoming retreat from the elements.

The Walnut Tree, Worlington

Visited here a couple of years ago. Was staying at a B&B just down the road. Didn't look much from outside but we were glad we ventured in. Nice menu, excellent service - really enjoyed our meal and evening in general.

Ostrich Inn, South Creake

Stayed in a cottage in South Creake February 2005. Nice to have such a good pub to eat out in!

Young, freindly, energetic hosts who were balancing their successful business with a new born baby and a crazy beagle called Boo!

Very welcoming locals. Delicious food (mussels were fabulous). Nice local photography on the walls which is for sale.

Dog friendly.

Seem to remember that they do accommodation too. Looked nice.

Highly recommend this place!

Three Crowns, Brinkworth

mmmmm - fooooood!!

Fantastic, imaginitive menu. Not sure if they are still on there, but highly recommend Pork Medallions with Crispy Cheesy Dumplings!

Dribble......

The Five Bells, Wootton Bassett

I lived in WB back in 1998 which is when (I think) the current landlord & landlady took it over. At least I think that it must still be them there looking at the comments posted.

It is a fabulous pub! A real locals pub, yet it doesn't reject newbies and passer bys!

Wonderful food using local produce and ideas from around the world.

I remember it being dog friendly - this may have changed though! I've fond memories of Dolly the bulldog (is she still resident?).

I miss though WB days! Make sure you hunt this place out!

The Cock and Rabbit, Great Missenden

Wonderful location, nice garden, Italian food by real Italians (stick with the pasta and you shouldn't be disappointed).

The Queens Head, Chesham

Def the best pub in Chesham - but plenty nicer elsewhere me thinks!

Thai food is OK.

Nice atmosphere (bit smokey at times though) - friendly locals.

The Vansittart Arms, Windsor

Sorry to hear this place has suffered recently. I worked in Windsor up until around 3 years ago and this was a regular spot for a sunny lunch time.

Hope it has a revival!

The Two Brewers, Windsor

One of Windsors hidden gems (perhaps the only one!). Tucked away by the top entrance to the Long Walk.

Food is wonderful but you really need to book ahead. Really lovely atmosphere and is nice to be tucked away out of the hustle & bustle of the crowds.

Def the best place to drink in Windsor - but don't tell everyone! ;o)

Sinnott's, Dublin

Great place to while away an afternoon. Excellent place to watch any rugby that's on. Friendly service, great bar food.

Worth being brave enough to poke your head in the dark doorway and wander down the stairs!

Ferryboat Inn, Helford Passage

We inched the car through the narrowest of lanes (didn't know there was a wider route!! D'oh) and traversed down the steep slope to get there on a mild, clear sky evening in February this year.

What a fabulous location! Literally on the beach/riverbank.

Staff couldn't have been more welcoming. Food was lovely (massive portions). They do special 'meals for 4' which looked great - massive bowl of curry - unfortunatley there was just the two of us though!

Think the place had just been done up - felt really fresh.

Didn't experience any of the issues the other reviewers did - perhaps we got lucky?

We would definitly return though! Give it a go!

(Steep climb back to carpark was compensated for by the incredible starry skies!)

The Kings Arms, Tring

OK - I know I'm biased as this is my local - but the KA is something special! A PROPER pub! Not a jukebox or 'big screen' or a chip in sight!

Instead - excellent company - fabulous food (their hot beef sandwich, served with gravy is legendary!) all homecooked - great beer/cider - the most wonderful homely atmosphere. We very much think of it as an extension of our living room!

Lovely cobbled yard with gas heaters and canopies.

Just the nicest place! I could go on!!

The Piddle Inn, Piddletrenthide

Another Piddle Valley Gem. Smaller than the nearby Poachers but again wonderful company, great food and good drinks!

I've several years to go - but if I ever look to move to retire, it will be to the Piddle Valley!

The Poachers Inn, Piddletrenthide

This is a truelly wonderful place. Stephanie has worked wonders in creating such an idillyic (sp!) place.

Fabulous food! Wonderful beer and wine. Fantastic atmosphere. Really couldn't say enough good things!

Oh and they have renovated all of their rooms too - so you could always book in for the night!! Then you can eat and drink to your heart's contentment!

Please do go here! Wonderful walks over the hills or along the river.

Enjoy!
