The Prince Of Orange, Ashton Under Lyne

Since this pub has now re-opened, the only beers available when I visited last night were Unicorn and I predict another Riot. The only cider available was boring Strongbow - no Old Rosie or Rosie's Pig, and the guy behind the bar looked at me askance when I asked about them. The "8 real ales" promise never ever materialised and I have a nasty feeling this pub is going to go downhill fast. There were young kids outside banging on the windows and, as usual, hardly any customers. I bet Robinsons wonder why the hell they invested so much money on making the place look so good. There was chewing-gum stuck to the leather of the bench I was sitting on, no music, just Coronation Street on the telly. Very sad to give this place a thumbs down - the Baker's Vaults is a superb place and the Prince of Orange could do with a serious marketing campaign to give it a boost.

The Wheatsheaf, Leyburn

Stayed here for 3 nights recently and found the place to be excellent. The food was second to none, the staff were really friendly and there were 4 local ales on - Black Sheep, Theakstons Best, Jennings Cumberland and Semer Water. Couldn't have asked for a more welcoming and friendly place.

The Wrens Nest, Glossop

If you're looking for somewhere to have a roast and a good pint of real ale, don't bother going to the Wren's Nest. Despite the claims of its designated website, there are no cask ales on at all, although there are two pumps still in situ. I complained about this and the lady behind the bar said they had cask ales on until a couple of months ago and she would bring the website's false claims to the attention of the manager - watch this space. All my friends enjoyed the carvery and the salad and the mac and cheese. Because of the lack of a cask ale, I decided to try an over-priced bottle of craft beer - Three Creatures IPA or something like that, but guess what? Despite it being written about in glowing tones on the menu, they didn't have any of that either. Needless to say, I won't be paying a return visit. There are some great pubs in Glossop, but this ain't one of them.

Bucaneer Inn, Babbacombe

I visited this pub on my first ever visit to Torquay last week and found it to be absolutely excellent. The staff were friendly and accommodating at all times and the beer, well, for me as a first time tryer of Proper Job and Rattler cider, I was in alcoholic heaven and didn't know what to drink next. Usually went about six and the dining-room was always full until they stopped serving food at 9. All the food was home-made and absolutely delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone.

The Crown Inn, Stockport

I have loved this pub for the last 14 years since I started going in when I used to work in Bredbury. I live in Bolton and visit now every time I go to Stockport, which isn't as often as I'd like. The staff are really friendly, the beer is first class, and if you're lucky, you can even catch some ukulele playing on a Saturday afternoon once a month, some folk on a Sunday and some other live music. A pub that really knows what it's doing and is good at it. My favourite place to be.

The Spread Eagle Hotel, Romiley

visited this pub on Friday 28 Feb. It has recently been very nicely refurbished and specialises in reasonably priced carvery lunches, though they do have other food for those not wanting a roast dinner. More importantly, they had four cask ales - Black Sheep, which was excellent, Theakstons, Robinsons Unicorn, and an Adnams beer. This pub is owned by a family who owns several pubs in the area, including the Fletchers in Denton, but the Spread Eagle scores over the Fletchers for its variety of ales (the Fletchers only has Robinsons beers) and for the variety of food. A nice place to visit.

The Boundary, Audenshaw

as I have a friend who lives near this pub and use Guide Bridge train station regularly, this has become one of my favourite haunts. The beer (I usually drink the Champagne ale, but have had the Galaxy too) is always good and the quality never varies between visits. The food is good too, and the staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly. I would recommend this pub to anybody either to pop in for a swift one (or probably more than one) or to eat a great meal. If you're a rocker, however, note that Smooth Radio is usually the order of the day music-wise!!

The Ship and Pilot, Ilfracombe

To say I was disappointed in this pub is an understatement. I had found it in the CAMRA Good Pub Guide so was really looking forward to visiting. The pub itself was more than dirty with the carpets looking like they had been held together by spilled drinks and the walls, floors and cisterns of the ladies' toilets were a disgrace. As for the beer, although there was a plentiful supply of real ale, the vast majority of it was dark beer, not to my taste and the only beer light enough for me to try drinking was Robinsons Trooper, which had travelled down from Stockport - almost as far as me, so I wasn't inclined to drink something I can drink at home! I tried a pint of Armada and really didn't like it. My friend had a pear cider, and although I am no cider expert, it tasted sour to me. I won't be going back in this pub should I go back to Ilfracombe.

The Prince of Wales, Ilfracombe

Nice pub with flagged floors. Had a couple of good pints of real ale in there; nithing to complain about and there were loads of old books you could borrow for 50p which went to charity. Nice touch.

The George and Dragon, Ilfracombe

I have no adverse comment to make about the pub itself, except to complain that it is massively overpriced. I had a pint of Tribute, and a small bottle of Magners and was charged £6.17. This was approximately £1.50 more than I paid in the hotel in which I was staying. I guess I should have enquired the individual prices before ordering, but I would consider this pub a total rip-off - probably why it was empty on a Saturday night compared with others in the area.

The Three Legged Mare, York

Have to agree with everything good said about this pub. It's the first place I choose to visit when in York, mainly to sample York Brewery's ales, especially Guzzler, which is top-class. Well-kept beers and friendly bar staff. An excellent place to be.

The Gun Inn, Hollingworth

Visited this pub yesterday about half 2 and was delighted to find they had Moorhouse's Pride of Pendle on, together with two other cask ales. A fantastic and reasonably priced pint! Had a bar meal and my friend and I both thoroughly enjoyed the food. For those coffee drinkers among you, they also do a cracking coffee. Definitely worth a visit, though careful how you cross the manically busy road outside. I'll definitely be going back again.

The Bulls Head, Tintwistle

Followed a sign near the reservoir pointing the way to this pub and saying "food served daily between 12 and 9", so was more than disappointed to find the pub closed at half 1 on a Thursday. Is this winter, then? I think someone associated with the pub needs to either remove or change the sign to avoid other people being as disappointed to remain pintless as myself. Thought I would visit the only other pub listed for Tintwistle, but that too was closed! such is life!!

The Royal Oak, Chesterfield

Afraid I can't help with opening times as I visited on a Friday afternoon. However, I can advise that the quality of the beer in here is excellent. Had a pint of Chatsworth Gold and a couple of Jaipurs and thoroughly enjoyed them. Did not sample food so cannot comment.

The Magnet, Stockport

I have to agree with Nigelgain. This pub is a gem, like the Crown Inn nearby. The quality of the beer is excellent, and you can even take a carryout of your favourite ale home with you. I will definitely be going back there again when in Stockport and I would urge anyone who considers themselves a real ale fan to do the same and disregard some of the unintelligible and garbled comments made re this pub. Fantastic, and well worth a visit!

The Queens Arms, Bakewell

Had a few gorgeous pints of Jennings Cockerhoop and Tizzy Wizzy here yesterday. Beautifully kept beer and sat listening to the most bizarre but interesting mix of music on a very comfortable leather sofa. Pub was pretty empty but it was a Thursday afternoon. Would definitely recommend a visit to this pub.

The Peacock, Bakewell

Went in the Peacock yesterday. Had a lovely pint of Chatsworth Gold and another of Swift Nick; both kept excellently. My friend had a prawn sandwich with homemade crisps which she thoroughly enjoyed and which was very hearty indeed. Great pub.

The Porter House, Dublin

Deliberately went to find this pub as someone had told me it's the only real ale pub in Dublin. There were a few porters and stouts on and a beautiful pale ale I drank called Galway Hooker. It was the pub's birthday, so it was full of balloons, which was the only downside for me coz I hate 'em. Apart from that, it's a nice pub on lots of levels and the beer was great too.

Gravity Bar, Dublin

I absolutely loved the Guinness storehouse tour and my time spent in the gravity bar was some of the happiest I had in Dublin. I thought the Guinness was excellent and, disagreeing with some of the comments from other posters, I only encountered one person in the whole Guinness building who wasn't Irish, and she was the person on reception as we arrived. Definitely worth doing the tour. If you want more than a pint, though, there aren't many seats, so get your freebie in the Gravity Bar, then go a couple of floors down where you can sit and drink in comfort.

The Dawson Lounge, Dublin

Really interesting place. Dark and, as the tourist info will tell you, very small. However, great pint and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.

The Lowes Arms, Denton

Been here loads recently coz I have a really good friend who lives nearby. They always have different real ales in, which is fantastic; the food is always good, and the staff are always friendly. Make sure you go wearing something light though, as it's always boiling in here! Certainly one to visit.

The Falcon, Chester

Nice pint of Sam Smith's in here and another unusual and pleasant building. The only pub I've ever been in where someone came round offering us homemade fairy cakes. Bit bizarre but added to the character of the place.

4 May 2011 11:42

The Bear and Billet, Chester

Visited this pub recently on a walking trip round Chester. Had a sandwich that I thought would be a light lunch and it turned out to be the biggest and best butty I have ever eaten. The beer was spot on, the staff were very friendly and helpful and to top it all, this is a lovely building. Would recommend this pub to anybody, drinkers or not.

4 May 2011 11:39

The Peaks Inn, Castleton

Visited on 16 11 2010 in the morning and again at lunchtime. Two real ales - Black Sheep and Kelham Island Easy Rider; both beautiful. Had food, which was excellent and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Couldn't ask for better and would recommend this pub to anyone. Incidentally, my friend who was driving said the coffee was great too!

The Waterhouse, Manchester

This is my favourite Pub in Manchester. Great atmosphere, normally really good ales. An all-round nice place to be. Spent a lot of important hours in there!

23 Apr 2009 15:43

The Fox, Hanwell

Beer Festival at Easter 2009 was a triumph as usual. Thanks to Sarah for E-mailing me the list early so I could put it into Braille and me and my mates could have a fabulous day. Excellent beers; friendly staff; great place to be!!!

The Red Lion and Pineapple, Acton

I've visited this Pub almost every time I've been to london. I've never been short-changed, very rarely had a bad pint, and ALWAYS had good food and enjoyed myself. Granted, the queues at the Bar can get a bit long, but apart from that, it's a good place to go. Good selection of real ales, as with all Wetherspoons establishments.

17 Mar 2008 13:42

Owd Nell's Tavern, Bilsborrow

this is one of my favourite pubs and if I lived nearer (come from Bolton) I'd be in there every night. The selection of real ales is awesome and the guy behind the bar knows about them and can discuss them with you. When I've eaten in there, the food has been good too. The atmosphere is excellent, even when very busy. What more can you say - an excellent place to be.

27 Feb 2006 10:30

The Red Lion, Greenford

Pub has been refurbished and now has facilities for three real ales and when I visited had Spitfire which was really good and London Pride. Was very nicely refurbished and had very friendly staff. Also has a comprehensive and very nice-sounding menu, though haven't as yet tried the food. Well worth a visit.

4 Jan 2006 10:05

The White Hart, Hanwell

This pub is great if you like horse-racing, which is on the telly constantly. The London Pride on keg is good and the atmosphere is variable.

The Crown and Anchor, Chiswick

Visited 30.05.05. Very friendly staff, excellent atmosphere and lovely real ales. Is due to be refurbished again in the next six months and Landlady is looking to bring in more Real Ale. Can only be a good thing!!!
