Excellent pub. Four hand pumps, one of which is an ever changing guest ale, always kept in top condition. Good selection of draught and bottled continental lagers also. No food (just crisps, nuts etc) but there are a number of good restaurants close by. Convivial atmosphere whether busy or quiet, and always a friendly welcome. Plenty of extra seating upstairs with some comfortable sofas surrounded by what could possibly be original Tudor decor. Some background music but this is low level and non intrusive. One of the best boozers in Ipswich.

Sat in this gem of a pub as I write this. I tried the Harvey's Dark Mild, Lewes Castle Brown Ale, Sussex Best Bitter and Armarda Ale - all were in top condition. I also had a chicken and stuffing baguette which was decent.
Yes the pub is tatty and could do with a lick of paint and perhaps a new carpet. But those are the only changes I would make. The staff are friendly enough and it's always nice to see a pub full of regular drinkers in this day and age.
This place blows out of the water the theory that pubs close to railway stations are not worth the bother. Will definitely be coming back.

Had a couple of meals at this place recently and both were of an excellent standard. Didn't try the ales but they certainly looked in good condition when served to other customers. Was impressed to find four ales including a mild on handpump in such a rural location. Service was generally excellent (save for a rather over-friendly barman on the second occasion - though this wouldn't have been a problem if he'd had a few more customers to be dealing with - midweek in December should explain it) and none of us could have any major complaints. Recommended.

The Three Horseshoes, Charsfield
Just found out that this pub has closed after the owner refused to renew the lease or something along those lines. A great shame, as this place served some of the best food and ale I have had for some time, and I always received a friendly welcome from Martin and Emma. They really did put a tremendous amount of effort into running the pub.
I have seen this kind of deplorable behaviour from pub owners all too often. I just hope that Charsfield is not destined to be yet another rural community permanently deprived of its local pub. Pubs are one of the few things that are still iconic of British identity, and they are disappearing at an alarming rate.

This pub has just staged its first beer festival, with around 15-20 beers on offer, good for a rural pub with few chimney pots around it! Before last night I hadn't been in for a good few years but was made as welcome as ever and found the quality of the ale to be tip-top. They were serving food (which looked superb) and there was a bit of live music in the beer tent round the back. This is still a boozer worth visiting, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Again pleased to report that the pub is steadily improving under the new tenants, both public bar and lounge have been repainted and have benefited from some new furniture. Darts and pool teams seem to be taking off, and some of the old regulars have started to return. Occasional music nights proving popular. Current guest ale is the marvellous St Austell Tinners, almost unheard of in this area. Homemade pies and pasties are available along with the main menu. The old-style 2-room set up of public bar and lounge has been retained, which I like. Still has an atmosphere conducive to a quiet pint and a good conversation, something the other pubs around here don't have. Open all day every day. Looking very promising...

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Tattingstone
Visited this pub for the first time today having heard it recommended by a friend. I wasn't disappointed. The place appears to have been recently redecorated with a complete new carpet and what looks like new furniture, but this has been done quite tastefully and the pub still has the feel of an older building. Two ales were on, the Adnams Bitter was most agreeable, the other ale being Courage Directors. I ordered Game Pie from the menu, which appeared to be home made and was served with roast potatoes and veg - very good. Also a very friendly welcome was given by a the barman - who I assumed to be the landlord. An enjoyable visit.

The Three Horseshoes, Charsfield
Went to the Three Horseshoes for lunch today, purely for the sake of going somewhere other than our normal favourites. We were not disappointed. Two ales were available (suppose in a rural area they can only offer as much as they know they will shift - well we wouldn't want any beer wasted now would we?) Although I could only drink Pepsi (the police tend to frown on drinking and driving) the beer I saw being served to others certainly looked in good condition and wasn't staying in the pint glasses long! The food was utterly superb, well cooked and hearty portions for a reasonable price. A real log fire added to the atmosphere. A very nice pub.

Great pub. Friendly owners and staff. Adnams Bitter and Broadside always available, usually along with one of their seasonal brews (the very delicious Old Ale at present). Warm and welcoming atmosphere, even if there are few customers. Food is good and all home cooked - the fish comes from the fishermen on the beach opposite so is always of the best quality. Accommodation is also offered but I've never tried this as I live fairly locally.

Pleased to report that the Dales has indeed reopened - and the pool table is back! (Should never have been removed). It's a bit of a shell at the moment but the new owners must be given plenty of time to settle in and build the place's life again. Two ales on at present including Hancock's HB which is rare in this part of the world. They have just started doing food again which includes fish & chips to eat in or take out.
I hear that both pool and darts teams have been formed which is exactly what a local pub needs. There is a small child's picnic table in the lounge which would indicate that children will be welcomed, (although I never had any trouble taking children in there before - even toddlers). Here's hoping the new owners succeed...

Love this pub, and visit every time I'm in Penzance. Can't understand Steveexpopes comment - this pub is nothing like Wetherspoons - no sticky tables for a start and no drunken tramps loitering about! Food is always excellent for me, as are all the ales - never had to take a pint back here. Staff friendly and efficient. Good location for a post-dinner walk along the seafront and only about 10 minutes walk from the railway station. Recommended.

Arguably one of the most famous old road houses in Britain - there are not many famous enough to be marked on AA road atlases...
This is one massive pub, mainly catering for restaurant custom, presumably during the main summer season. That said, it was still warm and welcoming when we visited in November, with a very nice open fire in the front bar.
There were three ales available, all of which were tried and kept to a satisfactory standard. The food wasn't the best I'd ever had (steak and ale pie), but certainly not the worst either, and definitely not so bad that I wouldn't go back. Portions were of a good size.
Unable to fault the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. I would also say this is a convenient place to stop off if you have children. As mentioned in previous reviews, it's only around 30 seconds off the main A30.

This is a pub you'll either love or hate right from the start. It is indeed dark inside and filled to bursting with artefacts and oddities. However it appears to be well kept, toilets were a little old but clean, and the roaring log fires in both bars when we visited in late November were most welcome. Several ales are available including St Austell Tribute and Sharp's Doom Bar, as well as some from local craft breweries. All appeared to be well kept, the Doom Bar in particular going down a treat. The Cobweb seems to be the 'local's pub' in Boscastle, and some of said characters are could indeed be percieved as being a little inhospitable - just ignore them and they shut up, I've found. We didn't try the food so can't really comment on that, except to say it certainly looked and smelt nice.

The Port William Inn, Tintagel
Visited this pub again twice last week whilst on holiday nearby and could not fault it. First night we went in but I was driving so asked them if they would mind filling my 4-pint take-out carrier (which I had got from another pub) - no problems at all and the resulting 4 pints of St Austell Tinners were superb. Also there was no quibble over my request that they remove the sparkler from the handpump before pouring - if this doesn't happen then you get 4 pints of foam, but some pubs seem to have a problem with removing sparklers...
On the second occasion we had a meal and a few drinks, both were of a very good standard and the food was served quickly and with good portions. Again the ale was faultless - and all three working handpumps were tried! Even the pub quiz was well managed and very enjoyable.
Those people saying that this pub is expensive have obviously never been to many pubs in London and the South East...
23 Nov 2010 17:06
Just a note to say the ale selection is now back to Greene King IPA or Greene King IPA. Staff said they couldn't shift any of the other ales. To be expected in what is mainly a lager pub. Food is still good though, and cheap.

As a rule pubs found directly outside railway stations (in towns that is) are generally rather mediocre. This is one of the exceptions to that rule. Atmosphere and staff friendly, family room for kids, 8 very well kept ales on handpump from many different regions, plus handpump cider. Didn't note much in the way of food (except snacks) but could well have missed it. Doesn't matter - supermarket across the road sells very nice sandwiches and cakes and there are fish & chip shops and a branch of Subway very close by. Would recommend this place to anyone.

The best pub out of all I've visited in Liverpool. Cain's house serving there Mild, Bitter, IPA, Autumn Leaf (seasonal) and the legend that is FA (Formidable Ale). Well designed pub with a number of different drinking areas, plenty of space and generally pleasant surroundings. Extremely handy for Lime Street station.
19 Oct 2009 19:38
Not a bad place to start if you are after Cain's beer and happen to be up that end of the city centre. There were three Cain's ales on when I visited including dark mild. Also two or three guest ales on handpump. Interior is interesting, made up largely of old chemist shop memorabilia (hence the name I suppose). Bar staff not the friendliest but efficient enough, didn't take long to get served even on a Saturday night.
19 Oct 2009 17:02
Went in on a Saturday lunchtime which seems to be the best time to go, busy enough but not crowded, and got served straight away. Jennings Cumberland Ale and Shepherd Neame Late Red, both well kept and well served. The fabulously ornate interior of this pub just has to be seen to be believed, it really does feel like an old gentlemens club, with its wood panelling, stained glass, mosiac floor and leather chairs etc. Upstairs the elegant restaurant serves some of the best pie and mash I have ever had, and service is generally quick and friendly throughout.

The Angel and White Horse, Tadcaster
Called in here the other day when passing through Tadcaster. Coming from East Anglia this is the first time I've ever managed to find Samuel Smiths on draught, also its nice to see a town that isn't completely overrun by Greene King! This is a good pub for drinkers, the SS Old Brewery Bitter was superb, just wish they'd put some of their other beers on handpump rather than freezing cold smoothflow taps!! Food was definitely microwaved as it came too quickly to be anything else, and the mash potato looked / tasted suspiciosly like the instant variety... however the pub itself is very pleasant, elegant wood panelled interior and comfortable seats. A nice atmosphere to sit and drink / chat in.

The Yorkshire Terrier Inn, York
Characterful gem of a pub located on Stonegate in the centre of York, only a short walk from the Minster. Been here a few times and never fails to satisfy. York Brewery beers plus guest ales all served in excellent condition by friendly staff, and on the one occasion I sampled the food (pie chips and peas) this too was superb. Pleasant upstairs room with large bay window which is excellent for watching the world (and the totty) go by. Toilets also upstairs very clean (at least the gents was), there is a stairlift for those less able to manage stairs. One of those places that it is a criminal offence to miss if you happen to be in York.

The Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds
My favourite pub to visit when in Bury St Edmunds. Never had a bad pint, not tried the food but everyone I know who has gives the place the thumbs up. Generally pleasant clientele and always seems to be free of chavs and other general vermin. A good place for a couple of nice relaxing pints with friends.
30 Aug 2009 17:40
Paid a little visit here the other day around lunchtime. Can see what people mean when they say they would let their train go and get the next one. Had a couple of pints - very different beers but both in excellent condition. Didn't try the food but have to say it smelt wonderful! Walls covered in old (mostly railway orientatated) memorabilia and conservatory very comfortable. Reckon I'll have to stop off there again next time I'm passing through...

One of the best and most charismatic pubs I have ever visited. An ever changing variety of ales which are always in top condition. Good pool table and a jukebox with an excellent selection of classic rock. Charismatic and friendly staff and locals alike. Love this place and cannot recommend it enough.

The Berney Arms Inn, Berney Arms
Been to this pub a couple of times in the last few weeks and all I can say is fantastic. Sampled most of the different ales on offer and all were excellent, as was the food. Friendly welcome from owners / staff and a gorgeous setting in an unspoilt nature reserve. Can recommend a visit.

Had an hour or so to kill in Portree during a whistlestop tour of the Eastern seaboard of Skye, and this was the first place I came to. Two handpumps serving Caledonian Deuchars IPA and Black Sheep Bitter.
On asking for a pint of Deuchars I was informed that it was off, which begs the question why was the pump clip not turned round to show this? As a result I had to settle for a pint of easily obtainable English beer (this is not by any means a slur on the beer itself) when I had hoped for a rare Scottish ale...
The pub also has big screen sport. Bar staff not exceptional but friendly enough.

I think the timing of my visit to this pub was a little unfortunate as I'm sure I didn't get to see this pub at its best. I only had an hour to kill in Perth, so everything was a little rushed by the time I had walked from the railway station.
The pub was busy on the Friday afternoon I visited, and it appeared to me that many of the ales were being changed in preparation for the evening and the weekend in general. I could only get a pint of Hopback Summer Lightning, which was excellent in every way, however I can get this regularly where I live, so was slightly disappointed not to get the chance to sample some local beer. However I accept that for many of the locals this English ale would make a good guest beer.
I can only echo the comments from other users about the friendly welcome recieved from both staff and locals. I will definitely make a point of returning to this pub when next in Perth.

Now one of the best pubs in Woodbridge in my opinion. Owners Kim & Steve plus staff always very friendly and welcoming, and there are no fewer than 8 handpumps on the bar, serving a wide variety of well kept ales. Last night I had a superb pint of Timothy Taylor Dark Mild, which I have never seen before in this part of the world! For lager drinkers I can recommend the draught Staropramen, imported from the Czech Republic - at 5% it beats Stella hands down!!! Fun quiz night held once a week on Tuedays.

Not my favourite Ipswich pub. Went in recently to find the place smelling of line cleaner / bleach / some other similar substance, and on sampling a pint of Adnams Broadside had cause to suspect that the line cleaner had not been properly rinsed from the lines... However by this time the lone barman had mysteriously disappeared!! Better off having a little walk out of the town centre and visiting the Dove...

Visited this pub the other when I had an hour or so to kill in Par before catching a train. Literally over the road from the station, I found the pub welcoming and friendly, with a pleasant atmosphere. Being from East Anglia I ignored the two guest ales (Greene King Abbot and Old Speckled Hen - I can get those anytime) and went for a couple of pints of Sharp's Doom Bar, which I can only describe as faultless. A few people were a little miffed that no food is served after 14.30 even on a weekend, however that is only a small gripe about what is otherwise a pub well worth a visit.
21 May 2009 02:04
Only problem I have ever had with this place is the fact that they don't serve meals until 6.30pm on weekdays. This is not much good if you have to be at the Royal Albert Hall for a 7.30pm show. Otherwise good - never had a bad pint in here and the selection of ales is generally most agreeable.

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington
Went in here the other day in search of something to eat before heading to the Albert Hall. First impressions were relatively clean but noisy with both music and televisions blaring away. I ordered a pint of Adnams East Green and got something resembling a muddy puddle which gradually 'half' settled to reveal around an inch of sediment at the bottom of the glass... Had the 'large' fish and chips which turned out to be anything but, would hate to see what their 'regular' portions are like!!! My mate ordered a chicken burger with bacon and cheese and got a beefburger instead, and all this for rather inflated prices... don't think I'll be going back in a hurry... walk a little further and visit the Anglesea Arms instead.

Manningtree Station Buffet, Lawford
One of the best station 'buffets' on the rail network. Good place to sit and quaff a pint of ale while waiting for your train.
8 Nov 2008 22:40
Well-used Adnams house just a little way out of Ipswich town centre. Sells the majority of Adnams beers including seasonal brews. Never tried the food but it always looks and smells good. Quite a welcoming atmosphere. Big downside is that, like most Adnams tied houses, the beer is very expensive. Yes you get a good quality pint but if you choose to have more than one drink here, you won't be having a cheap night out.
8 Nov 2008 22:36
An absoulutely exceptional ale house. 12 handpumps plus a choice from the tap room. One of the very few pubs outside London to serve draught Meantime beers. Lager drinkers are well catered for with a selection of quality imported brews, including fruit beers and the marvellous Budvar Dark. How many pubs sell dark lager at all, let alone on draught?? Four beer festivals per year, and a microbrewery is planned. Owners and staff always extremely welcoming. Only downside is that at busy times there's often very little hope of finding a seat. Otherwise top-class establishment, the best pub in Ipswich by far.
8 Nov 2008 22:25
My local boozer. Yes this does look like a classic estate pub, but once inside the atmosphere is very pleasant. Selection of real ales including Adnams and Greene King along with a variety of guest beers surpasses the choice offered in many similar establishments, and all are very well kept. The food has always been to a high standard, and the regular customers are always friendly. Good local.
8 Nov 2008 22:18
One of the best pubs in Suffolk in my opinion. Old place with wood-burner in winter, live entertainment on Friday nights. Selection of 3 Greene King ales, always kept in exceptional condition. Eaten here many times and found the quality of the food to be consistently high. The carvery on Saturday nights is to be partcularly recommended - but book early! Trevor the landlord and his staff always make anyone feel welcome - as do the locals. One of those precious few places where a lone stranger can sit at the bar with a drink and be involved in the conversation before long. An excellent venue.

Ye Olde Reindeer, Banbury
A first visit for me last week - and one I shall be repeating when next in Banbury. Proper old fashioned pub with a very agreeable atmosphere. I noted five different Hook Norton ales on hand pump, had two pints of Old Hooky which was in tip-top condition. I also heard other customers saying that the various other beers were of similar quality. Food-wise, I opted for the 'Reine Deer Special' which was listed as being ham, home-made bubble & squeak, baked beans and a fried egg. I requested the egg to be omitted owing to an allergy, and was pleasantly surprised to be offered extra ham instead. The food was of an equal standard to the beer and everything was reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and I was made to feel welcome. Recommended.
