The Brackenrigg Inn, Watermillock
oh dear, oh dear, oh dear
a pub in a lovely location, overlooking Ullswater and the surrounding hills, but spoiled by crap service and overpriced food.
Unfortunately, this typified a lot of the pubs in the Lakes that we visited during our week in April - great place, shame about the food and prices. Since when did it became ok for pubs to charge over 10 for sausage and mash or fish n chips?! But that seems to be the norm in many Lakes pubs
this particular pub was one of the worst - a relatively quiet weekday lunchtime order for 8 people turned into a farce - with the adult meals turning up 15mins before the kids (despite a request to the contrary), very average sarnies for over 6 a shot and an inability to find anyone to serve us resulting in us leaving early, having got bored of trying to find someone to order coffee or food from
perhaps we caught them on a bad day, but the service had an air of Fawlty Towers about it, which was probably normal. Maybe ok for a quick drink on a drive down Ullswater, but unless you enjoy paying top whack for average food, give it a miss!

Went here last week with the family for lunch in the beer garden on a sunny Saturday. There were about 8 other customers apart from us, so it was disappointing that a simple food order took 45mins to arrive. And more disappointing that the chicken in the burger was burnt on one side and the bap stale.
kids meals ok, but it's just very average - ok if you're starving, but not where I'd take friends. The Black Swan at Pease Pottage is a much more consistent pub for good food and service - would recommend that over this any day

This is an excellent pub - beautiful location next to the canal, lovely garden and kids play area, good beer and very good food at a reasonable price.
It's the perfect location for a lazy weekend afternoon in the summer and we'll certainly be going back when we visit the area again.

We've been going to this pub for the last 6 years, even though it's 15 miles away - because it was such a good find and the food was great quality and good value. It was the place we'd take friends if they were visiting, and was the osrt of place where the chef would take the sunday joint of beef off the menu if he wasn't satisfied with its quality.
However, last time we went we were disappointed - the food menu had become run of the mill and boring (scampi, sausage and mash, steak etc) and increased significantly in price. In the end, we decided not to eat there and went to another pub nearby. There was hardly a meal for less than 10 - a 15-20% increase on previous prices.
I don't know whether this is because it has changed hands recently and the new owners have reverted to the 'traditional food at restaurant prices' philosophy that so many pubs have now - but it was certainly a step down from the many previous occasions we'd eaten there.
The location, decor, garden and beer are still lovely - it's a stand-out pub in those respects, but I rerally hope the landlord looks agin at the food offer to tempt us back on a regular basis!

The White Horse, Maplehurst
good little pub in a lovely spot. simple but reasonably priced food, decent beer and a bar with a lot of character
nice garden out the back too, so plenty of things for the kids to play on or space for them to run about
doesn't take cards though - so take plenty of cash if you're planning a session or a meal!
