Rose Villa Tavern, Birmingham

Visited in December 2014

Beautiful pub owned by Bitters n Twisted chain who run a number of venues in town.

I had an amazing pint of Cappucino Stout, I'm not a great stout fan but this was just gorgeous.

Food is available, its in the style of american diner type stuff but is nice and filling and prety cheap.

Absolutley worth the trip

The Prince of Wales, Birmingham

Very good pub tucked away behind the ICC. I often pop in here after work at the Barclay Card Arena.
Traditional boozer and always a warm welcom. Gets quite crowded at weekend evenings.

2 Feb 2015 13:38

The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham

Nice pub but was much better before it became a trendy bar however given its location it didn't have much choice.

The Woodman, Birmingham

How lovely to see this pub back open. I remember going in there often some years back.

Lovely restoration work sees the bar standing proud with its beautiful tile work. Food is available and all sounded lovely.

Speaking with the landlord there other plans in the pipeline to open the upstairs up as a bar aswell.

Owned by the same people as Post Office Vaults this place is on to a winner.

Brilliant pub.

2 Feb 2015 13:34

The Craven Arms, Birmingham

Definatley worth the walk to find this hidden boozer in Brum.

Friendly staff and regulars await you in the pub. I had a pint of bank vault which was different.

Will definately be returning in the near future and will be on my pub crawl list!

Oast House, Southport

Visisted in October 2014. Small bar which very much gives the impression of being for locals. Having braved it I found that all in there were very friendly.

No ale on offer but the Carling was ok and priced at £2.50 a pint.

Randomly about 8pm a large dish of paella and fresh bread was produced on a table and available for all to share.

2 Feb 2015 13:25

O'Leary's, Southport

Scruffy little pub with pool tables on the upper floor and a few tables downstairs. No real ale on offer but the Carling was pretty good. No food served however you are welcome to bring your own.

They had live music on both nights I visited and it was very good. Atmosphere was lovely and the place got very busy.

Prices were very cheap considering its location in a coastal resort.

2 Feb 2015 13:22

Catherine O'Donovan Free House, Birmingham

Definately closed

2 Feb 2015 13:14

The Bureau, Birmingham

Nothing special. Typical city centre 'wine bar' type place filled with suits and lacking atmosphere.

2 Feb 2015 13:13

The Bull, Birmingham

Absolute gem of a pub. The landlady was very welcoming and friendly as were the other 2 staff that were on. Beer was very well kept.

Interior the pub has plenty of curious and is a 'proper' pub. They do a range of food which all sounded hearty and very nice.

I fully intend to visit this place more often

2 Feb 2015 13:12

The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham

Excellent city centre pub. Good range of beers and excellent range of Ciders.

No food served but your welcome to bring your own. Cracking pub nicely tucked away.

The Peaky Blinder, Birmingham

This bar is what was until recently 'Confessions' bar and prior to that was Sara Moons.

Now called 'The Peaker Blinder' it is simply trying to cash in on the hit BBC drama. However, it is making a somewhat poor effort. The place is adourned with manequins which obviously are all wearing flat caps. Signs near them warn anyone that touching will see them barred. Aside from the frankly wierd manequinns the interior isn't much different to how the place was in its previous incarnations.

Beer selection - nothing special, Carling, Strongbow, Stella etc... I had a pint of Strongbow darkfruits which was refreshing enough.

It is a shame that the owners haven't put more effort into the theme of the bar as the idea in principal is very good, granted it's probably in the slightly the wrong location and architectually it will never be close to Peaky Blinder styles but the interior could be significantly improved upon.

Service was friendly enough although some of the natives, some of whom may have never been home since it was Sara Moons looked a bit ferral.

21 Jan 2015 13:52

Partners, Birmingham

Re-opened as XLs bar in 2014, not sure if still trading

21 Jan 2015 13:45

The Lamp Tavern, Birmingham

Every time I visit this pub I fall in love with it a little more. It's a gem of pubs in Birmingham.

I can not shout loud enough about this place. If you haven't yet paid it a visit then you must!

21 Jan 2015 13:42

The Equator, Birmingham

This is lovely bar. It has a relaxed atmosphere and very friendly staff. I often pop in at lunch time if I'm working in the area.

Furnished with comfy sofas and bar stools. The bar is a small 1 roo affair and I should imagine gets busy in the evening.
I always look forward to visiting this bar.

21 Jan 2015 13:38

The Kerryman, Digbeth

This is a great pub in the Irish quarter of Birmingham. You'll not find top quality real ales or the like but you will get a decent pint of lager or an excellent Guinness.

On entry the bar is to the right and runs a decent lenght. Its been modernised and is the sort of bar you can expect to see in a stylish night club.

there is a small drinking area near to the bar usually inhabited by the regular Irishmen who spend their days staggering around the Digbeth boozers.

The pub then opens out into a reasonable size dance area to the rear of which are located the toilets.

During the day there are usually a handful of staunch irishmen who can regail you with amusing anecdotes or with whom you can set the world to rights. In the evening the pub becomes a lively post work bar. At weekends during the day it is busy especially on match days then of an evening it moves into a nightclub type of venue. It also provides a convenient place to meet for pre gig drinks for the HMV academy next door.

28 Sep 2011 09:19

The Bromford Inn, Birmingham

Closed, looks like its going to be demolished.

20 Jul 2011 11:13

The Prince Hal, Chelmsley Wood

Another 'Shameless' style pub full of chavs with broods of multicoloured children and no intention of ever working or being a useful part of society. Proper dog hole of a pub.

22 Mar 2011 11:53

The Fountain Inn, Birmingham

just paid the place another visit. Great venue. Only ale was bishops finger which was ok. The place was welcoming nd friendly. I really like this place, shame it only opens at 4pm!

16 Dec 2010 16:27

St Bernards Grange, Sheldon

Crap food. Crap beer and crap service.

14 Dec 2010 12:20

The Radley Arms, Sheldon

This was the local BNP HQ. it has now closed and I believe it is earmarked to become a super market.

14 Dec 2010 12:19

The Chestnut Tree, Sheldon

Went from being the chestnuts to an indian bar and grill, which burnt down earlier this year. currently closed but looks as though building work taking place.

14 Dec 2010 12:17

The Rooster, Sheldon

Always been a good pub, from when it was the Corner stone, then the king george I think, then the red rooster and now just the Rooster. I wouldn't say this was that rough of a place.

14 Dec 2010 12:16

The Baldwin, Hall Green

I'm sure everyone is worried Darren!

I would have to agree with the rest of the comments (Except Darren) this place is a hole!

14 Dec 2010 12:04

The Punchbowl, Chelmsley Wood

Jeremy Kyle could do a christmas special from this dump!

14 Dec 2010 11:49

Windsor, Birmingham

Used to be a good boozer but yet another victim of the atmosphere killers.

14 Dec 2010 11:38

The Trocadero, Birmingham

Agree with whats already been said. Used to be a great pub serving great food (The Troc burger was phenomenal). Shame to see its gone down hill.

14 Dec 2010 11:35

Toad At Bullring, Birmingham

Its been known by a couple of names over the last few years, it is now however closed. The doorway seems to provide a a conveinient shelter for some Of Brums homeless though.

14 Dec 2010 11:33

The Shakespeare, Birmingham

This used to be a great pub when it was a 'proper' pub up until around 2002 when the redevelopment of that row of business' took place. Since then this has become a bar without an atmosphere. Shame.

14 Dec 2010 11:31

The Fox and Grapes, Digbeth

Wonder where all the charcters from here are drinking now

8 Nov 2010 11:56

The Gospel Oak, Acocks Green

Being turned into apartments.

8 Nov 2010 11:43

The Wellington Hotel, Birmingham

What are the opening times for this place?

8 Nov 2010 11:41

Cobbs, Birmingham

Paid a vist there again last week. This place always seems to amaze me as to the diversity of its customers, as has been mentioned by ILooklikeme.
Possible the cheapest pint in the city centre, not a bad pint either. Wouls like to go in of night and see what the difference is to the daytime.
Its always on my list of places to go when Im one of my backstreet walkabouts!

12 Oct 2010 12:12

The Lamp Tavern, Birmingham

I was going to pop in last week for a quickie but it was closed, it was before midday though!

4 Oct 2010 11:38

The Wellington Hotel, Birmingham

Don't think its open during the day.

4 Oct 2010 11:36

Dragon Inn, Birmingham

Typical wetherspoons really. I popped in around lunchtime last week, full of pensioners ordering coffee (Wish they would go to coffee shops!!!) place was clean, staff friendly beer ok.

4 Oct 2010 11:32

The Mercat, Digbeth

Unless there is a secret entrance this place seemed very closed on Thursday 30th september.
Probably not a bad thing either!

4 Oct 2010 11:29

, Digbeth

By far one the best pubs in Birmingham and one of only a handfull of 'proper' pubs that remain.
I enoyed a lovely pint of Carlsberg on Thursday last week, served to me bby a friendly chap. There were only a couple of people in (lunchtime) but were friendly enough.

Cracking pub!

4 Oct 2010 11:28

The Wellington Arms, Weymouth

Smashing pub!!!!

23 Sep 2010 12:50

Rendezvous, Weymouth

I go to Weymouth every year and have not been in this place since 2001 when I was on exercise in nearby Wyke Regis.
Us squaddies piled in to the place back then and had an excellent evening with a very good live band. Needless to say we had sunk a fair few on our way to the place and were ever so slightly merry once there. Alas that was some time ago now and wife and child have put paid to such merryment. I may try and drag them in next year when we are down there!

23 Sep 2010 12:45

Partners, Birmingham

Changed its name to Glamorous showbar. Closed down late 2009/early 2010.

20 Sep 2010 12:59

The Railway, Birmingham

now the Bright House. Hasn't been Sam Wellers for some time. Same sort of place though, bit of a dive, natives are a bit 'cautious' of strangers.

20 Sep 2010 12:55

Horans Tavern, Digbeth

Is this now the Forge?

20 Sep 2010 09:58

The Carpenters Arms, Digbeth

I agree with Nalarewop,
My friends brother used to run this place around 2002 and it was a cracking pub. Shame its gone.

20 Sep 2010 09:35

The Town Crier, Birmingham

An episode of shameless could be filmed in this place!

20 Sep 2010 09:32

Spotted Dog, Birmingham

Closed now.
Was a good pub of a similar ilk as the fox and grapes, then got taken over by new management and it went down hill faster than a fast thing. Pitty.

20 Sep 2010 09:26

The Bull Ring Tavern, Digbeth

Full of character, they look a bit scary in there but they are friendly enough. Nice little boozer.

20 Sep 2010 09:25

The Dubliner, Digbeth

Another great pub. I've said for years that Digbeth is the best place to go drinking in Birmingham!

20 Sep 2010 09:23

The Big Bulls Head, Digbeth

Great pub, simple but excellent food, friendly staff and regulars.

20 Sep 2010 09:21

The Kerryman, Digbeth

Smashing pub!!!! had many an excellent night (and day) in this place!

20 Sep 2010 09:20

The Mercat, Digbeth

Is this place still open?

20 Sep 2010 09:20

The Fox, Birmingham

I'd agree with Mattyboy on this one. Having spoken with the one of the directors of the brewery which supplies the place, the reason it's not open in the day is due to it being sandwiched between 2 Probation offices and during the day as many of the offenders linger outside, and no doubt would enter the pub, also next to one of the probation offices is an agency dealing with alcoholics.
I can see why they stay shut until the evening!

20 Sep 2010 09:11

The Fountain Inn, Birmingham

Have been in a few times in the hope that I was just unlucky on my first visit. On every visit I have found the place to be lacking in atmospher, borderline rude staff and expensive bar prices. The place needs a refurb, inside and out and change of management would also be beneficial.

20 Sep 2010 09:04

The Old Wharf, Birmingham

Now closed I think

1 Jun 2010 12:14

The British Oak, Birmingham

Finally found the place open yesterday.
Popped in for a quick pint, only 2 other people in there, one was the landlady.
Clean pub, friendly enough, not a bad pint of Carling.

31 Mar 2010 09:16

Queens Arms, Birmingham

Now closed.

16 Mar 2010 11:38

The Lamp Tavern, Birmingham

This is probably one of the best little pubs in Birmingham. I love the place and visit as often as I can when Im in the city centre.
first visited it about 10 years ago and it hasn't changed a great deal!

2 Mar 2010 12:16

Cobbs, Birmingham

I agree with Mattyboy. This is a great pub, with some real characters in it!

2 Mar 2010 12:13

The Fox and Grapes, Digbeth

Its sad to see another fine Digbeth pub closed, no doubt destined to become apartments.
Used to have some great nights in here!

2 Mar 2010 12:12

Missing, Birmingham

I found the opposite of Birmingham Boy.
With one of my firms offices just around the corner I would often stop in for a pint and always found the staff to be friendly and the beer ok.
Went in last week, 1st time since new management took over, and while the place has been given a deserved make over I found the clientel to be totally unfriendly and the staff stuck pretentious queens.

2 Mar 2010 12:09

The Pit Stop, Birmingham

Closed. Now a the Handmade Burger Restaurant.

2 Mar 2010 11:55

Catherine O'Donovan Free House, Birmingham

I tried to visit again last week Thursday, sign outside said open from 12 - 3, however at 12.45 it was still closed and showed no signs of opening anytime soon.

2 Mar 2010 10:59

Trusty Servant, Chelmsley Wood

closed and demolished.

24 Feb 2010 10:12

The Poachers Pocket, Kitts Green

Re-opened 2 weeks ago. Not paid it a vistit yet

24 Feb 2010 10:07

The Eden Bar, Digbeth

I think this place is now called Eden

24 Feb 2010 09:55

The Jester, Birmingham

Had closed down but has recently re-opened with a new manager. Not been in but have heard good things about it.

19 Feb 2010 11:42

The Town Crier, Birmingham

The only thing missing when I walked in was the sound of Dualing Banjo's.

A pub I have passed many a time and never gone in until last week when I stepped inside one wet afternoon. There were 6 people in there not including me. 4 of them were sat at ther bar meaning to get served you had to squeeze between them. They all went uncomfortably silent as I approached the bar and I could feel the eyes burning in to me. I ordered a pint of lager and took a seat in a corner, near an exit!

It was at this point it struck me that everyone was indeed drinking either cider or lager from a can and I was the only one of the 7 of us drinking draught lager. The lager didn't taste off, although it wasn't the coolest tastiest pint I'd enjoyed.
I braved a trip to the toilets and they didn't let the place down, theywere well in keeping with the pub.

Didn't brave another drink and left rapidly. Who knows, I may pay the place another visit for nostalgia!
