This really is the best Pub in North Wales!! Autoharpy - 26 Jun 2013 10:55 |
What a delight, a traditional Old World pub with great food, great service and of course very well kept Real Ales. For wine lovers there is an extensive list. You can't help but relax as soon as you enter the pub with its log fires and many original features from century's gone by. If it's your birthday you can have a trumpet rendition of Happy Birthday at your table given by the landlord and for Anniversaries there is the Anniversary Waltz. Well done Simon and Nina in created this fabulous home from home. This must be the best pub in North Wales. kevmax1212 - 10 Jun 2011 13:45 |
The trees are bare, the days are short and judging by the coats that the majority of Wales are sporting winter is definitely upon us. I recently had the annual feeling of 'oh my god it's that time of year again' and dragged my hesitant other half out to indulge in some good grub at The White Lion. The evening we spent in front of the fire was an almost a money can't buy experience. The White Lion Inn, situated just a mile above Colwyn bay is picture postcard perfect and was the ultimate cure for my bah humbug attitude. The food can be described as none other than traditional genius. I saved myself all afternoon so that I could enjoy a delicious home cooked meal to the full, an I can honestly say it was a wise decision. There was an array of contrasting flavours to choose from and I can assure you that as quick as our order was taken my grumbling tummy was silenced. We began with the garlic mushrooms, served with a side salad made up of locally sourced vegeatables and garlic granary bread. Not only was it presented beautifuly but the chef had clearly taken the time to take a simple dish to a whole new level of yum! Having done my fair share of travelling around the countries pubs, The selction of Ales was impressive. After much deliberating and swigging, we settled on orme's best. Recommended by the landlord this superb bitter was dark and nutty and wet our whistles for the entire evening. The real Welsh lamb shoulder was to good to miss and made up the central part of our feast. Served on a bed of cheddar and bacon mash along with almost every vegetable I could think of, I had to unbutton my jeans and take a breather but every bite was as tasty as the last. Once again the White Lion hasn't let us down. lowz765 - 27 Nov 2010 22:19 |
Having been spending a few days visiting friends in North Wales and drinking in pretty rubbish pubs, I was pleasantly suprised when we went for a meal one evening in this charming hostelry set in a small hamlet in the Welsh hills. Firstly, it's location is beautiful and right next door to one of the oldest churches in Wales and the pub itself is apparently the oldest pub in the area dating back to the 15th century and possibly beyond, you can smell the history in this place. You can also smell a whole load of delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen window, but first to the beer. 3 real ales, all from the wonderful Marstons brewery including Pedigree, surely the king of ales. Tried 'em all, fantastic, twice I think. One of the beers is a guest ale so I was told, so always something new to try ( they've got lager as well but who cares ), good wine selection too. The food, the food, the food, what can I say, only that we came back 3 nights on the trot ( that should tell you everything. Day one: The most succulent steak I've ever tasted, Day 2: The best Real Welsh lamb money can buy, Day 3: The only Steak and Kidney pie I've ever liked ( I was talked into it ). All the staff were relaxed, attentive ( but not overly) and very friendly, in fact, the whole atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed. The landlord played Happy Birthday to one lucky customer on his trumpet and each night there was something different going on. The first night was a fantastic Jazz band, the second a lovely bluegrass session and the third a hilarious quiz night, (god knows what it's like at the weekends). By far and away the best pub in the area, we tried a few others we found on the internet courtesy of (get this) the free WiFi service that the pub supplies ( pretty good for what feels like the land that time forgot ), but frankly, when it came to our last night out there was only one place to go, and our faces were recognised and the welcome never faltered and had a hilarious evening with the farmer who delivers the freshest free-range eggs every evening from just up the road, this is a proper hub of the community in every way and one that I'm starting to almost feel a part of. Waste no time, get down there now. BlackBob - 19 Aug 2010 13:47 |
