White Lion Inn, Llanelian yn Rhos

Having been spending a few days visiting friends in North Wales and drinking in pretty rubbish pubs, I was pleasantly suprised when we went for a meal one evening in this charming hostelry set in a small hamlet in the Welsh hills.
Firstly, it's location is beautiful and right next door to one of the oldest churches in Wales and the pub itself is apparently the oldest pub in the area dating back to the 15th century and possibly beyond, you can smell the history in this place.
You can also smell a whole load of delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen window, but first to the beer.
3 real ales, all from the wonderful Marstons brewery including Pedigree, surely the king of ales. Tried 'em all, fantastic, twice I think. One of the beers is a guest ale so I was told, so always something new to try ( they've got lager as well but who cares ), good wine selection too.
The food, the food, the food, what can I say, only that we came back 3 nights on the trot ( that should tell you everything. Day one: The most succulent steak I've ever tasted, Day 2: The best Real Welsh lamb money can buy, Day 3: The only Steak and Kidney pie I've ever liked ( I was talked into it ).
All the staff were relaxed, attentive ( but not overly) and very friendly, in fact, the whole atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed.
The landlord played Happy Birthday to one lucky customer on his trumpet and each night there was something different going on. The first night was a fantastic Jazz band, the second a lovely bluegrass session and the third a hilarious quiz night, (god knows what it's like at the weekends).
By far and away the best pub in the area, we tried a few others we found on the internet courtesy of (get this) the free WiFi service that the pub supplies ( pretty good for what feels like the land that time forgot ), but frankly, when it came to our last night out there was only one place to go, and our faces were recognised and the welcome never faltered and had a hilarious evening with the farmer who delivers the freshest free-range eggs every evening from just up the road, this is a proper hub of the community in every way and one that I'm starting to almost feel a part of.
Waste no time, get down there now.
