White Lion Inn, Llanelian yn Rhos
The trees are bare, the days are short and judging by the coats that the majority of Wales are sporting winter is definitely upon us. I recently had the annual feeling of 'oh my god it's that time of year again' and dragged my hesitant other half out to indulge in some good grub at The White Lion. The evening we spent in front of the fire was an almost a money can't buy experience. The White Lion Inn, situated just a mile above Colwyn bay is picture postcard perfect and was the ultimate cure for my bah humbug attitude.
The food can be described as none other than traditional genius. I saved myself all afternoon so that I could enjoy a delicious home cooked meal to the full, an I can honestly say it was a wise decision. There was an array of contrasting flavours to choose from and I can assure you that as quick as our order was taken my grumbling tummy was silenced. We began with the garlic mushrooms, served with a side salad made up of locally sourced vegeatables and garlic granary bread. Not only was it presented beautifuly but the chef had clearly taken the time to take a simple dish to a whole new level of yum!
Having done my fair share of travelling around the countries pubs, The selction of Ales was impressive. After much deliberating and swigging, we settled on orme's best. Recommended by the landlord this superb bitter was dark and nutty and wet our whistles for the entire evening.
The real Welsh lamb shoulder was to good to miss and made up the central part of our feast. Served on a bed of cheddar and bacon mash along with almost every vegetable I could think of, I had to unbutton my jeans and take a breather but every bite was as tasty as the last.
Once again the White Lion hasn't let us down.
