The Griffin has now been open again for 3 months, and is going from strength to strength. Both bars are now fully refurbished, and the beer range stands at six, two hand pumps and four from the barrel. All are in superb condition and come from local brewers such as Red Fox, Colchester and Brewshed, and other from farther afield. Particularly popular so far have Been Dark Star Hophead and Skinner's Cornish Knocker. cider is from Aspalls on draught and from Thatchers and Westons in bottles. grub is comprised of a fine selection of homemade pies and Scotch eggs. I cannot recommend the pub highly enough. ahscum - 26 Mar 2013 19:15 |
Big changes at the Griffin. This previously Greene King tied pub has now been taken over by the owners of the Five Bells in the nearby village of Colne Engaine, which is well renowned for both its food and ales. The refurb is still continuing but one of the two bars has been open since just before Christmas. The result so far is a quite spacious bar complete with an enclosed real fire and wooden decking. The owners have stressed that this is to be a locals pub and there is plenty of seating and even a darts board, rare enough these days. Five ales are on offer, Adnams Southwold on the sole hand pump whilst four guests are served straight from the barrels by the side of the bar. Most of the guests will be sourced from local breweries though there are plans for some to be sourced from further afar. My visit saw beers from Shalford, Red Fox and Nethergate as well as Bishop Nick's fine Heresy ale. All were well kept and not too cold. A fine and welcome addition to the ale scene in a town dominated in the main by GK. ahscum - 12 Jan 2013 13:27 |
