We arrived at this country pub to find most people leaving and suspected it was closed for the afternoon. However luckily for us, it was still open. We were the only people in the dark, moody interior. Although there were still a few people in the garden at the rear, where an open window gives access to the bar. Brakspear Bitter & Oxford Gold & Wychwood Hobgoblin were the 3 ales on offer. Addlestones was the cider. A perfectly acceptable country pub.

Visited this pub on a weekday lunchtime to meet up with some old friends. Lucky that it was a glorious spring day as I'm not sure the pub would have held all the customers! Place was packed on a Monday (must be a good sign).

Only had one pint as i was driving but Hobgoblin was very drinkable. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Thought the food was good value for money - salad stuff was really fresh and crisp.

All in all a pleasant couple of hours and will certainly return (if I can find it again).

Dads 84th Birthday so me, mum and dad went to the green man
Service very good, Food very poor?.
Rump steak was dry and the mushrooms looked like they came out of a lazy students dustbin.
Mums Tuna was just plonked onto the plate and dads Goulash ?? well not good
Shame as We have lived in Winnersh for 45 years and have always enjoyed the Green Man
No axe to grind
But wont be going again

When we planned a walk in the Hurst/Twyford area and researched on BITE for a lunchtime stop, the Green Man stood out. An average score of 8.6 ! This must be a pretty special pub. We looked forward with eager anticipation to our visit, expecting food like that at the Waterside Inn, beer tasting as if it was straight from the brewery and staff of the "quality" of those at the Spearmint Rhino.

And what we actually found was a very pleasant pub. For a Friday lunchtime it had quite a lot of customers. The Oxford Gold was absolutely fine and the Haddock and Chips equally so. The guy behind the bar was very friendly and even brought our drinks to the table as we recovered from our walk alongside a very muddy River Loddon.

Any negatives ? Well the area where we sat suffered from very low light levels - my eyes aren't what they were but I had great difficulty reading the menu. ( and I nearly nodded off, but that could have been the beer ) And although Brakspear's beer is fine, it ain't what it was ( not the pubs fault I know ). But as you can see, I'm being picky.

It's difficult to judge a pub at lunchtime as, whether it's good or bad, atmosphere tends to be non-existent. But we would happily return here. 8.6 ? I'll give it an 8 - maybe the evening ambience lifts it that extra notch.
