Friendly Free House with well kept beer. thefirkintaster - 15 Aug 2012 06:35 |
The Bell in Standlake now appears to have been bought out by the owners of the Boot in Barnards Gate up the road. And no looks like it's a free house rather than a Greene King, which is hopefully a good thing - reopens in Aug '09 according to the sign outside... coatesg - 1 Jun 2009 16:34 |
For my money, it is too early to say as yet, as this pub is under new management yet again (June 2007). Following the last four Landlords in as many years, my first reports from a few locals are that things, maybe, are now on the up. Certainly the new Landlord at The Bell, an amiable enough fellow called Colin, does seem very committed. As a pub property, The Bell at Standlake has all the makings of a good, honest, unpretentious, local community pub complete with village post office and shop next door. It also has its own small paddock to the rear of the pub that would be ideal for an impromptu BBQ, or a five a side team practice, or a scout, or girl guide event, or perhaps a charity car boor sale. My concern is, that with financial pressures to pay the brewery over the top rents, the latest incumbent will, once again like all those who have gone before, struggle to make it all pay. Ultimately he may be forced, yet again, into offering a selection of highly priced fancy food that is already very well, if not over catered for, in the surrounding area. In my opinion, what is now needed is just an honest community pub, a fun and safe place for locals of all income levels, aspirations and ages to mix and get on well together. A place with a happy atmosphere, a place serving good value food that is not pretentious but that is good enough for a birthday celebration meal at about 12 to 15 pounds per head. A bit of TV in one bar, a game of cards in another, a BBQ in the garden or paddock and a slap up family celebration meal in the back restaurant. Great! Just what is needed. But . . . . . . . will it happen this time around? Stay tuned! All the best, Frankie Lee-Darling anonymous - 30 May 2007 20:33 |
Used to have the best bar-billiards team in Oxfordshire 20 years ago;and the best landlord-never been the same since. anonymous - 12 Nov 2006 14:38 |
