The Tabard is still just about the best pub in Chiswick. It's tucked just around the corner from Turnham Green tube station. There's a decent selection of ales - Greene King Abbot & IPA, Truman's Swift & Waterloo Sunset, Sambrook's Junction & Powerhouse Porter & St Austell Tribute. There were also 2 real ciders - Weston's Old Rosie & Lilley's Strawberry Cider. They offer a CAMRA discount, but apparently not on the cider. The clientele were a bit rowdy and the atmosphere was noisy in general. But a fairly decent place.
Sadly, it would seem that the dear old Tabard has been re-decorated by a twelve year old ! Can't face going in there, so sorry Tim.
Hopefully TPB's experience was a one off as we had some excellent ales there yesterday and we were impressed at the range and choice of light and dark cask beers. Food was ok.
Had a pint of pale ale there that was clearly off (as a long standing CAMRA member Ive had a lot of pale ale). Bearded barman refused to give me a refund, saying in his opinion the beer was fine. It was vile and very off. As I was with friends who had drinks I had to pay for an extra pint, and he said that some people had also complained about the 2nd beer I chose! - not saying much for the beer quality at this pub these days! A bad taste in the mouth in more ways than one. From now on will avoid this place.
With the Duchess of Cambridge currently closed. This pub is an excellent alternative. Good choice of ales, well kept served by friendly bar staff
Attractive multi-room pub (with theatre) on edge of Bedford Park conservation area and almost next to Turnham Green station. It sells a range of micro-brewery beers. I had Old Slug Porter which was in excellent condition. Does food which i did not sample but it looked fine.
What a turn around in the last 6 months. New staff seem on the ball and know their beer and with a selection of 12 real ales/ ciders on tap it makes this pub the best in Chisiwck.
Very quiet lunch time when I was there. Excellent ale tho. I'll hopefully get in this pub again soon.
I really want to like this pub as it has just become my local. I've visited at least 5 times in the last few months and whilst the ale has had its highlights, and I like the 'snug' in the back, the rest of the place leaves me cold. And I'm afraid the staff haven't impressed me much either so I'll just keep walking down to the Duchess of Cambridge.
I went to the Tabard last night for the first time in some 5 years and was pleasantly surprised. Excellent rang of real ales. I'll be back soon!
This is a conveniently located pub very close to Turnham Green Tube station. The outside area is pleasant in the summer, the theatre is a nice addition to the atmosphere of the place when something is on there and it's not very expensive considering it's in west London.
Five ale pumps, with four on last night. Enjoyed a couple from the Titanic and Butcombe breweries (also had Otter and St Peter's ale on). Very good pies, friendly staff and felt like a proper locals' pub, despite a lot of the people (including me) being there to go to the theatre upstairs. Type of place I would happily frequent if I lived in the area.
Beer 1 pint Pedigree Marston = 3-07p Sunday Roast Beef Dinner (Large) = 9-85 Total 12-92p
Genuine William Morris tiles on the wall
Not a bad pub.
Has two nice pints there recently. I just arrived at the wrong time as the packed theatre had just emptied for the interval. The bar staff were very efficient though and I found a place to sit around the back. Will definitely return soon.
Decent pub, two minutes walk from Turnham Green tube. Various seating areas, including a nice quiet snug round the back which doesn't tend to get too busy. There's a theatre upstairs that hosts plays for those who are drawn to it. A pub with a different feel to each bar and an outside terrace that does get busy when it is warm. Staff friendly and attentive-well worth a visit!
Echo the positive comments of other reviews. Enjoyed very well-kept pints of Purity Mad Goose and Brains Reverend James. Service was efficient and prices were reasonable for the area. The pub has a good, relaxed atmosphere and is definitely well worth a visit.
Well located free house near Turnham Green tube station. Beers available on my visit were Oxfordshire Pride of Oxford, Batemans XB, Brains Reverend James and Youngs London Gold. The pumpclip for Deuchars IPA was turned round. The old fashioned snug looked quite cosy. Cabinets in the bar area contained cricket memorabilia. There was also a pleasant outdoor drinking area to the side. Possibly worth a return visit, when I haven't tried 13 other pubs before!
Went down on a Wednesday which is the current quiz night. Started about half eight. Good beer on tap and the young quiz master was very funny. We didn't win but all had a good night. Definitely would recommend both the quiz and the pub.
I'm slightly surprised that this prominent looking pub, just round the corner from Turnham Green Station, hasn't had a posting here for over 12 months.
The pub was built in 1880 as the pub for the commuter garden suburb of Bedford Park and the building is Grade 2 listed. An unusual notable external frontage gives way to 2 interconnecting bars, with some fine original wall-tiles in the room on the right being of particular note. The pub features in CAMRA's Regional London Inventory.
The bar on the left has an adjoining food orientated dining area and an unusual sunken wood pannelled snug type area. There's some memorabilia from the pub cricket team - The Tabard Pilgrims - who are evidently very active. Next door there's a 60 seater theatre attached to the pub.
On the pavement outside, a sandwich board tells us "Best real ale choice or your money back" and, on my recent Saturday afternoon visit, 4 real ales were on - Butcombe, Batemans XB, Rev James plus one other which I've forgotten ( Spitfire?). A 5th pump had been serving Tribute, but it had run out. The Batemans XB - 2.83p - was in good nick.
I find it difficult to assess on a single visit where this pub is trying to position itself. On the one hand, the beer choice is welcomed in a Fullers dominated area and there's an active pub cricket team, but, on the other hand, there's no TV's for televised sport and no real pubby atmosphere or feel, which is discouraging. Food obviously plays a big part, but, unusually for the area, its of the pub grub variety and not gastro. The pub was virtually deserted on my visit and those few customers present were evidently not regulars.
The jury's out on this one as far as I'm concerned but, given its convenient location by the station, plus beer range, I'm inclined to give it another go sometime.
Quite a nice pub. A large interior full of nooks and crannies, with two separate areas connected only via the external door as far as I could make out. The bar sits in between. I was having a softie, but there were three or four real ales on display including what looked to be one or two guests. A small beer garden with steps going up to an upstairs theatre advertising comedy. I would return.
Great live music! went for the first time last night and will be sure to return!! If you love 'blues' be there, 2nd and 4th Sunday of month I'm told. Nice crowd, fine JD all I needed, with music ;)
I'm a regular at the Tab's and was very furious with the lack of cleanliness from the new manager, his boss Simon, send me a nice (and quick response too) email, about taking care of the issues. Let's hope for the best. I miss the warmth welcome and smile face of the old manager though, not just because she's hot, but because she really cared about the place.
Good beer selection including Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Went in last week hoping to see Euro 08 semifinal but was told that new manager does not like sport on TV. Met someone in there last night and there was tennis on. The same barman said that tennis is ok but football watchers are too rowdy Perhaps the manager should publish a list of 'acceptable' sports
I gingerly edged my way into here last week as I couldnt remember leaving the last time I was in. Thankfully the barman was polite and I breathed a sigh of relief.
Landlord, Deuchars, Tetleys, Bombardier, Stella, Fosters, Strongbow, John Smiths Staropramen and Leffe were all available although the Bombardier was off. There are lots of tucked away drinking areas and I think that I stumble across a couple having an affair as they jumped out of their skin when I came bowling around the corner with my pint. There was some easy listening music playing, but it could not be heard from the small public bar. There is some covered and uncovered outside seating to the side of the pub next to the entrance to the Tabard Theatre, but it is next to a busy road.
I quite like this pub and I would recommend popping in if passing.
This pub has lost a lots of its atmosphere since a recent change of manager. The food is amazingly boring, incredibly overpriced and extremely slow in being served, probably due to the tight-arse manager only putting one barman on at lunchtimes. You can sometimes wait for over 5 minutes for someone to appear! Local villains, here's an opportunity to leg it with the till and a couple of dozen bottles!!
I went to the Tabard this evening to see Al Murray in the upstairs theatre. The show was great, and afterwards, I got Al's autograph which was great too... The Adnam;s Broadside was excellent and at 2.65 a pint was very good for the area. The church opposite (St Michaels & All Angels) was featured in Nuns On The Run with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane. My dad was involved in building work at the church when the film was made.
I'd love for Gordon Ramsay to visit and tell them where they went wrong.
Ridiculously priced food, which is hideous!
Went there recently 'cause I knew the manager and she's not there anymore... tables were all dirty, staff drunk behind the bar, no music, no food... what happened with the Brazilian vitality that used to be the charm of the place? Terrible atmosphere and quality of ales where are the Brazilians? Ill move my local whatever they are
Good choice of beer, good service, food excellent if a little pricey.
I love this pub, it rocks bells. Quiet, friendly, efficient and basically perfect for a proper session on the beer. The food is boring but then, any proper session around this corner of London deserves to get crowned with an Andy's Kebab.
Went there last night and the place was very busy, there is a theatre above the pub!!! Real Ales were perfect (I tasted all of them!), my burger was on time and the staff was friendly. Chiswick is finally a nice place to live!
anonymous - 27 Oct 2006 11:10 |
Popped in here with my girlfriend after a day mooching around Chiswick for a quick pint while wating for a bus and got absolutely hammered. Made random friends with some other hammered people. Nice, easy-going pub (I think).
Is it my imagination, or has the menu changed for the worse (asides from the tacky plastic laminate)?
Couldn't find my favourites and the prices seem to have gone up.

A multi-roomed pub in an historic building, also benefits from various outdoor areas. The "retail space" (bar and food counter) had difficulty meeting demand on our visit, and substantial queues built up. Once ordered, the food service was quick, and of good quality. A very good selection of beers and real ales, catering for most tastes. Highly recommended, especially "off peak".
kalex - 30 Aug 2006 21:23 |
I so agree with several reviewers here. Beer ok, the place is comfortable enough and easy on the eye, but the meat was thick slabs, and the vegetables an afterthought.
Was there last night for the game, great atmosphere, staff was nice, then decide to stay for food and what a surprise quality food I found... had a burger and my friend had a fish n' chips. Will be coming back soon.

One pub I had not bothered with after living in Chiswick 5 years as it is a bit out of the way for me, but after reading a prevous poster saying the staff were Gothics I was tempted to go being a Goth myself and fed up with all the local casual or old man pubs with sport showing. There were NO Goths behind the bar, but on entry the pub seemed small and grotty, the food looked good so we found a table and orderd. I decided to go for a wander, it was only then I realised the pub is much bigger than seems and a nicer carpeted area around the backm, so we moved there. The food was great, service good and freindly and attentive. Would def go back. THey do unfortunately show the football though. Pity all these pubs chase the same market.
This place is one of the better pubs in Chiswick and far better than anything you'll find on the High Street (which isn't really saying much). Having said that, I don't think it in itself is particularly special, it is nice and has a decent little terrace but nothing outstanding. I'll pay it a visit one evening some time to see what it's like then. The service was pretty good on my visit.
Nice pub, with deceptive size, and plenty of character. I always get good service here, from friendly, chatty staff. Beer is good, and reasonably priced. I've eaten here a few times. This place has the same manu as The Duke. I'd forgotten they were both Spirit. Thought at least one was Fullers. Anyway.... My rump steak, on my last visit, also came out Medium-rare, and I'd ordered it Medium-well. My mate had ordered his Medium rare, and they were both put down without checking whose was whose. They both appeared to be cooked the same. Still a bloody good pub though, I'll just double-check on my steak next time I order.
Graam - 10 Apr 2006 20:00 |
not impressed. Went into The Tabard on a Saturday lunchtime. Ordered two rump steaks and a fish and chips. Staff did not seem pleased to accept food orders. Was given the bill before the food arrived.
Rump steaks were thin and cooked medium rare, despite being ordered well done. Frozen oven chips were very dry. The mushrooms were like wood shavings. On the whole I would not recommend this as an enjoyable eating experience.
Comfortable. Friendly. One of my favourite pubs (probably biased since it used to be my local). God knows how much money I've fed into the quiz machine over the years.
Belied its old man status on my last visit by being rammed with what seemed like every pissed up posh kid in West London. Reminded me of being in the White Hart in the nineties - Trish would serve anybody who could see over the bar.
best pub in its area. cosy, good selection of beers and very friendly, even if it can get a bit busy on friday/saturday nights. may well find it lacking a bit in representing the younger generation, but its by no means an 'old man pub'. only problem id say, is that when the manager is around it's very difficult to look away from her... she's truly beautifull and one of the nicest persons i ever met.
anonymous - 8 Mar 2006 18:06 |
Thanks for all feddbacks! Come to celebrate St Pat's Day with us, the bar will be open till 1am!!!
Very nice pub with good quality beer and decent prices. Pleasant atmosphere and quieter/more relaxed than the big pubs on Chiswick High Road. Go here for a quiet drink rather than a big night out.
Nice pub with a friendly atmosphere, definitely the best pub in Chiswick.
Really nice pub, just on the corner where Turnham Green Station is.
I dropped in here with my former girlfriend back in the summer and had a meal. The food in this pub is wonderful (esp, Coriander Chicken with Rice) and reasonably priced. There seemed to be a good range of drinks and real ale and there was a comfortable atmosphere in there. Found the staff helpful and efficient and they were smiling! A true rarity in pubs and bars nowadays. Will definitely be giving this pub another visit!
9/10
Great little place. Best pint of Pedigree I've had for a while. Nice snack menu, lots of little rooms tucked away, large non-smoking area. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Music was non-instrusive, and the clientele were chatty and polite, but not snobby and suity. Definitely my first stop when at Turnham Green again.
This is one that everybody must visit. The boss is quite a character, and knows her ales. The pub is ancient and characterful. Polite and nice staff. Great sunday roast.
Very cosy with the fireplace and candles, fantastic quality of real ales. One of a kind!
anonymous - 13 Nov 2005 20:45 |
Just had a Sunday Roast there, and I can say is the best is Chiswick... staff and manager were very nice!!!
anonymous - 30 Oct 2005 16:32 |
One for the ale drinkers. Excellent house. It helps a lot the manager being so dam gorgeous. In my opinion probably the best ale in this part of the city. I love it.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2005 10:22 |
Fantastic pub... atmosphere was so friendly, food was very good (we had burgers, so people above are crazy), manager and staff were very sweet. We love it.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2005 22:49 |
Who's that really hot barman? dont know his name! GRRR!
The Beer's reasonable (cost and quality), friendly enough, pleasant inside, no chavs.
Yeah, I like it
:-)
Yea, I was going to order some food, but my friends ordered first - and when they were served the krusty brown ice hockey pucks that were meant to be burgers, I decided against. Beer was cheap though, so if you drink enough of that, the food may seem tastier.
anonymous - 27 Aug 2005 16:02 |
Stay away from the food. Admittedly i only tried two bites of the burger but that was enough for me. Somehow they managed to create a solid crust on the outside consistent with it being reheated and microwaved over a three day period. The atmosphere was on a par with a funeral. If you are thinking of visiting - try the Off license instead.
anonymous - 25 Aug 2005 11:20 |
Excellent pub for summer evenings in the garden or cosy nights by the fire in the winter. It has something for everyone - the food is fab and the booze is great, brilliant selection of wines!
anonymous - 16 Aug 2005 22:37 |
Fantastic pub, 20 times better than under previous manager. Food top notch, real ales excellent and the staff are always friendly and efficient, although fashion wise a little alternative. Lais the manager has done so much in 6 months it makes me proud although slightly biased(she was my assistant manager)!
Thanks everyone that came to help Sam and Alex raising money for the Lance Armostrong Foundation... we raised 1200!!!! THANKS! THANKS! THANKS!XXX
A friendly, civilised pub that bucks the trend: no blaring music and shouted conversations; no surly, indifferent staff; beer and food that tastes damn good; and no rip-off prices. And the manager doesn't need to try anything else, she is a very sweet person, always around her customers and supports her staff beautifully! Congratulations! The best pub in Chiswick.
Next Saturday the 16th of july we are having an acoustic night @ the Tabard starting @ 8pm... don't miss out!
Lovely lovely bar. This pub is a must visit.Great beer, great staff and great customers.I cannot recomend this pub highly enough.
Went there after reading the comments here, and they are all corrects. Had a really good nite, lovely atmosphere, the manager came to talk to us, staff knew our names by the end of evening, good food and the quality of the real ales was fantastic. It's my local from now on.
i love the tabard... it's myy dad's local and whenever I go to see him I pop in for a beer. It's a fantastic pub.
Been using The Tabard for on and off for over 20 years and i'm happy to say it hasn't change all that much. Friendly, clean and tidy and an easy going clientele. One of that dying breed of establishment that you can strike up conversation with strangers in and not be thought weird.
Thanks for the nice comments! Feel free to e-mail me with ideas or questions, complements or complaints on [email protected]. Cheers!
Highly recommend it! Went there last friday, excellent food, FANTASTIC BROADSIDE, the staff was very friendly (all of them!), and the manager takes time to talk to her customers... well done!
anonymous - 4 Jun 2005 13:27 |
I love this pub...Lais the new manager is one of the nicest people...she has made the place so friendly and welcoming - everyone in chiswick should visit this pub - it beats all others in the area!
anonymous - 21 May 2005 15:37 |
Fantastic place, lots of arts& crafts, nice crowd, not loud and smoky like the other ones in Chiswick, cosy and friendly. I give 12 out of 10.
anonymous - 5 Mar 2005 22:49 |
This was my late fathers regular wateringhole when we lived in Chiswick and been in a few times with him, hope it still has the same character ??? Have they still got the Theatre upstairs ?
Just round the corner from the excellent Andys kebabs (I used to know Andy), hope they are of the same high standard they were when we lived locally ???
Apparently this pub has a ghost. She is supposed to be seen whistling. It's also go some lovely Art and Crafts details.

Good pub. Greene King IPA available and well kept. Traditional and full of character
Dave - 16 Jul 2004 16:59 |
I love this pub. It's my local. They do huge succulent roast chickens, & lovley crispy roast potatoes, and the service is excellent! They sponsored me 500 to take part in Walk for Life on 20th June 2004 to raise money for HIV & AIDs charity Cruisaid. Thanks Tabard!!!
Jess M - 14 Jun 2004 13:14 |
I've been to better, but if your just after a beer on your way home, or a chat with friends it's great. No idot wakers interupt you.
anonymous - 30 Apr 2004 16:47 |
And W. B. Yeats used to drink there in the 1890s. Well, I thought that was interesting, anyway.
anonymous - 20 Apr 2004 17:37 |
Unusual pub in lots of ways. Has a very unique character. Full of little rooms. Not the best pub around, but thank goodness for pubs that are a bit different, especially round here where most pubs are either chain pubs or gastro pubs.
Johnno - 19 Apr 2004 13:34 |
Great place for a quick one after a long tube ride to Turnham Green. Full of "characters" and "mixed clientele".
Will - 27 Jan 2004 23:55 |
Not tot bad although there were kids in there when I went there once on a Sunday. And I get a feeling there was little or no music but I could be wrong. Nice decor though and an interesting layout. Good for: Sunday drinking unless there are kids there
