Yes. A great improvement, the place has been pulled down. Only worrying question is, where will the low life that formed it's clientele go now ? Must visit the Clydesdale soon

Read the reviews from froscani and loughtonian and thought it couldn't really be that bad..............it is ! Decided to pop in on Saturday lunchtime and didn't get through the door as the terrace and doorway were full of drunks, fat women, chavs and horrible kids. They all seemed to have a vocabulary only of words rhyming with "duck" and "hunt" So, I don't know what the pub is actually like but nobody normal would want to risk getting near the clientele that I saw. Either go elsewhere or give up drinking !

Visited this pub yesterday to kill some time and its just plain awful. Full of drunk, agressive, loud and unpleasant people at 4:40 in the afternoon. I cant have been there fore more than 25 minutes but I heard the f-word used at full volume at least 50 times.
Aside from the people, the pub is small, sparse, dirty and every chair seems to be broken in some way (hence the reason for everyone standing at the bar). There were food menus on the tables but there is no way I would eat anything from there. The only good points were that its a haven from the college kids that hang around outside and the barmaid was hot. Otherwise its a dive.

A bit of a dive until a few years ago, but in recent years it has smartened itself up a lot. The main bar area is still rather dated and tatty and some of the clientele are still a bit rough around the edges, but the staff are friendly and the new restaraunt is actually rather nice and very good value for money, especially the carvery.
And, unlike most pubs in the area, it still retains its essential 'pubiness' and isn't trying to be something it's not.

I was sorry to hear about the last posters experience -mine has been very different.I have known the manager Jim now for over a year through the generous Charity support he gives to our local primary school .He has always been a perfect gentleman and extremely helpful.Several of our parents have eaten at the Carvery and rated it very highly. Although I'm not local to Loughton ,I have supped with the locals and even as a lone lady found the atmosphere very welcoming and friendly ,and there was a lot of good natured banter and laughter going on. I'd certainly recommend it.

Having enjoyed the Carvery on a previous occasion, I returned with my family the following weekend (a Saturday). As there are no other menus other than the carvery on display in the restaurant, I brought along some fruit, a yoghurt and a small sandwich for my two young children aged 2 and 3. I always do this as a back up, as it enables me (and other restaurant users) to eat in peace if they are hungry and there is no other alternatives available that they would eat. We had eaten like this on the previous visit and everything had been fine. This time I was approached by the waitress and asked not to use our food, as they had noticed we had done this previously - I asked if I could provide them some fruit and explained that they were eating bits from our plates that we had purchase, and similarly drinks for them from the bar. However, we felt uncomfortable eating our meals afterward and I asked to speak to the manager to explain. I explained we had previously enjoyed our food and attempted to say I felt embarrassed if there had been an issue the first time which hadn't been addressed. I explained that there wasn't other options available and the manager said there was a bar menu. I said that this was not displayed anywhere in the restaurant section, nor was I offered an alternative when asked not to provide my own food. I would have gladly ordered from this menu, had I been aware of it. At this point the manager said 'I can't be 'f***ed' talking to you' and walked away. I was very upset as I had been speaking calmly and politely and had actually enjoyed the food we had eaten! I asked the waitress if she would ask him to return, which he did after saying to the pub side of the bar 'it's sorted'. I tried to resume our conversation, but he walked away again saying 'speak to the manager' (which he is). Needless to say I was very disappointed with his attitude over what was simply an oversight that there were other options available. I have never been into the pub-side (due to the children) nor eaten there and I re-checked the carvery/restaurant menus and there is nothing to suggest other meals are available. An unfortunate end to a family meal.

avoid this pub big time, avoid the 3 brinkley girls, and mother, they are slags, you cant miss em. leeann the oldest one is a liar, and cheat and a dyke. full of queers/lesbians in there, and a swingers club going round the Mccormacks and the atkinsons houses. basically full of low life scum, really avoid or you will catch some horrible disease.

I have to say I particularly enjoy going to this pub,for just a quiet daytime drink or on Friday nights for the Rock covers bands. There has previously been a lack of decent live music in the area,so until the Churchill changed owners there was absolutely nothing to do locally. Halloween down there showed the full potential of the place, the Band,Replica were brilliant. The atmosphere was great from the minute we got there, people were up dancing, having a genuinely good time and Most people in there had gone to a big effort to dress up for the occasion! Most friday nights are in there are a really good night, with entertainment on hand as well as some lovely bar staff, and a good Guv. The area of the carvery is now looking good,so I'm looking forward to eating in there. If I'm going out locally there is nowhere else I'd rather be.

The Churchill is not perfect I agree but give this pub a chance. It has just been taken over by new management and things are happening. The riff raff are on their way out! Friday nights are a must for a start. Some weeks the customers put the bands to shame as they are few and far between cos they're all outside having a fag. I have been made to feel very welcome by the staff and some of the bands 'East of Java', 'Expose', 'Hedgehog' are top quality. So if you're a bit of a rock chick check it out! And watch the rating if they can keep up the improvements this pub could be going up in the ratings!

Look out for the rusty mistatio

I've been frequenting the Churchill for some time now and have always found it a very pleasant pub to use. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. I've always found the locals to be very amiable (obviously you always get one or two who shall remain nameless)but in general all is well. Don't plan on bringing the family though as they the management operate a strict no children allowed policy

this pub is aint great, i used to go to watch live prem plus football back in 2001, it was nice, but the pub slowly took a drive and got worst, its dirty, the regulars are unpleastant typical of debden. food is poor and lacks a good selection of beer. dont go there!

This pub is alright now! Thing is i work in Debden Broadway where it is and i know most of the regulars already, but if i didnt know no one i would probably end up goin elsewhere for a quiet pint. Pub has good drink, space, and seating. Tv and pool a good idea for here, food is not. Highly Recommended if u do live local or in Loughton area. Easy to get cab home from here as cab drivers usually meet outside. Bonus.

This pub has new managment who have thrown out all the local drug sniffing pikeys, the beer is a bargin, so are the shots, pool table, juke box are seperated so you play it loud and play pool with out disturbing the older bitter drinkers on the bar, ok so the foods crap, but its pub stuff and its as cheap as bleedin chips. Visit it, its a tradional pub and the new team are very pleasant!!

No, no, no, no, no and again no. Went in with a couple of friends (of mixed ethnicity) and were told in no uncertain terms by the local meatheads that we really ought to leave. The biggest, fattest zero ever.

This pub scares the hell out of me a couple of years ago I went in they as I approached the bar I ordered my drinks and than I looked up at the bar display they was several photos on display of some guy who had his toe amputated the photos where of the toe before the toe was amputated and after it was amputated nice. I found the pub un friendly it seemed as if you was not regular your not welcome.

I visited this boozer last month as the relief Manager is a good friend of mine! The previous landlord had just done a runner with the xmas takings, Plasma TV's etc, and as a result a lot of work is being done by the incumbent to restore confidence in the place. Sure its a shithole but the hired hands seem good fun, the beer is cheap and the road out of Loughton isnt too far away. Give the place a try, if anywhere needs a drinkers support, it's this place!
|
1.30 for a pint of John Smiths & 1.60 for a Fosters ! But the catch is you're drinking in a Hell hole and surrounded by the local losers. Gets a 2/10 from me, that's only because the beers cheap and they've a decent Plasma to watch the footie on.

This is a terrible pub. It's a tragedy. Could be so good. But it's not. The food was so bad, and took so long, it was like they went with our cash to the local sainsburys, bought the ingredients, came back and cooked them. This is the only explanation as to why it took 40 minutes to serve a couple of beef burgers. It's as if they don't want you to buy food in there.
But the beer is cheap.

The Sir Winston Churchill used to be my local when I lived in Debden, until 1989. It hasn't changed much over the years. It still has the same old stalewarts who go in there. My own brother used to be a Barman in there some years ago so when I celebrated my birthday earlier this year, we went back for a bit of nostalgia. No it hadn't changed a bit.

The Churchill as its called by locals is a typical council estate pub. It is a real dive, one to avoid.
