Cosy and festive atmosphere albeit getting busy when we were there at 5pm on Friday. The Pickled Partridge ale was perfectly decent without being prize-winning.

Pricey beer for location as others have said. Food OK but stops Sunday lunch at 3pm which seemed early, and had run out of lots of dishes when we were there, bad luck I guess.

The pub is in one of the best locations in Topsham right by the harbour with plenty of outside seating.
Inside does get busy with many meals being served.
The trouble is it's a Hall and Woodhouse pub which mean expensive and a poor choice of beers.
So just a 6/10 from me

Nice location with plenty of outdoor seating. Beer of good quality

My wife and I had lunch in the Lighter Inn last Friday (13/08/10). She drank Tanglefoot which was good and I had a decent glass of South African chenin blanc. Her fish and chips were first rate and my four large sardines were absolutely gorgeous. Service was prompt and courteous and I thought the prices reasonable for the terrific quality meal we had.

Recently went to this pub for some beer and food. Beer generally good if you like Hall & Woodhouse - First Gold, Tanglefoot and Lemony Cricket on when we visited. Bar staff were generally helpful and a nice place to sit outside and enjoy the river.

However.... the food was absolutely shocking - everything seeming to come from either the microwave or the deep fat fryer. One person in our group ordered chicken which was actually raw in the middle. The rest of the party had food that was at best below average.

Summary - nice for sitting outside and enjoying a pint, but steer clear of the food - possibly one of the worst eating experiences I've had for some time.

Visited on an August Sunday & it was very busy. Service was quick but at the expense of quality.
8.95 for a roast dinner is on the high side and we expected more than
a couple of thin slices of tasteless beef, 3 roast potatoes, a few carrots, swede and mangetout. The ubiquitous Aunt Bessie Yorkshire pud and thin gravy was a real disappointment.
What I disliked most was the large soup bowl in which it was served.

One redeeming feature was the Dorset apple cake and ice cream - Lovely.

A beautiful setting but if these prices are charged then the food needs upgrading.

We started our tour of Topsham here (after a visit to the excellant cheese shop in the High street) beer was fine, and as others have said rather expensive, but its clean and comfortable and I should imagine in the Summer packed with Holidaymakers. Its certainly nice to sit outside.

I've just told a friend we'll go out for dinner at this pub and when she looked it up, she saw a list of bad comments about it. I can honestly say, I've been over ten times and can't for the life of me recognise it from the comments I've read. We've tried a number of their specials and dishes off the regular menu and think it's great - and we're not easily pleased. The sausages and mash come in a really tasty gravy with gorgeous mash, the crab sandwiches offer more than the usual 'veneer' of crab you usually get in pubs and are served on lovely fresh bread, the fish dishes are always tasty, and the service is always quick and friendly. I've eaten at some of the top 100 restaurants in the UK, with food cooked by top UK and Italian chefs, and I would recommend this pub any day. It's always busy, which is a good sign - and you often have to book for a Saturday night. I can't comment on the beer but my dad's been there a couple of times and I'm sure he'd be the first to mention if there had been anything wrong. They also serve a lovely red by the glass, I think it was the Shiraz. Honestly, please don't base any decisions on the comments above/below - try it for yourself. I'm definitely going back, time and time again!

Blighter. Beer poor, food expensive

OK pub in a great position. Prices are (not surprisingly) on the high side for the area. 8 of us ate their one night and the staff were good to accomodate us all in bang on food cutoff time. Meals were fine, though we were so hungry by then we'd have eaten pretty much anything.

A cracking position for a pub, right by the river. Alas thats about the only good thing about it.
It's a hall and woodlouse pub so you can't expect much. The beer was ok considering its origin, the service can best be described as poor, and the atmosphere non existant.
Didn't try the food.

Fair to middling. Food is OK, beer is OK, but nothing more than that. Fairly pricy for what you get. Often a wait at the bar. No real atmosphere.

A great location and a wide ranging menu - My lunch was very tasty, but my friend's sandwich was stale.
All-in-all a pretty decent place - can't comment on the beer as I was suffering from last night's excess in a bad way.

This should be a cracking pub. A good range of beers, a good looking menu and the riverside location made for summer evenings. However the food was terrible. Both the Lamb Ragout and Lamb Chops, on the specials board, were tough. It didn't help that the manager informed me that the Chops were supposed to be cooked this way. I shall not be returning.

Prompt telephone service for booking. Good menu, good food, value for money. Excellent beer only Badger but very well kept. Lovely view over river. Minor problem with chair sorted at once. Only problem lack of parking in Topsham (could be due to a large funeral on the day)will certainly return

lovely fish dishes and puddings, excellent red wine and wonderful setting, satisfying and worth a visit

Large riverside Hall & Woodhouse pub. Food is available most of the time - with many fish specialities. The monkfish I had was excellent. The pub has two non-smoking areas. Real ale is available.
