No idea why everyone keeps going on about the price of food here, as I was more than happy to visit repeatedly on a trip to Noss Mayo in February of this year. I only tried one beer, the very locally made Church Ledge, which I liked so much that I never tried anything else. Where we stayed meant that we had to walk past the Swan to get to the Ship and the former was always shut or completely empty and the latter full and bustling, even in February.

Called in here again whilst doing a bit of the SW Coast path. Didn't really intend to stop (we'd brought our lunch in a backpack) but it's simply the sort of pub you can't just walk past! We sat on the patio overlooking the creek and admiring the views. I had a pint of Tribute which was as good as ever and we resisted the temptation to eat - although the sandwiches in the backpack seemed to lose some of their appeal by the bowls of moules being served to the next table!
This is a lovely pub in a lovely setting. Not sure I'd ever eat there again unless I come into an inheritance, but for beauty, charm atmosphere and location it's just impossible to beat. Could have stopped longer but the sandwiches were calling so we set off and began the long climb out of the village.

Fantastic setting. Beer well kept and a good selection. Food very nice but very expensive for a pub despite the view. No locals to be seen only people up for the weekend staying at their 'weekend' cottage. Despite this and to be fair, the bar staff were very good at their jobs and the landlord knows how to run a pub so fair play. So lets not forget the beer. Very good.

As to this pathetic complaint by miss_magoo2 (magoo, rings any bells?). I have been going to the Ship Inn for many years. I live in SE Cornwall and take the Torpoint Ferry to get to this FANTASTIC INN (paying 1.50 for the privilege). The bar man is human and may have made a grave mistake (we all do at times). Maybe you should have checked the bill again to make sure before leaving and this fuss would not have happened. It is so common and easy for people to complain but to accuse people of trying to do you out of 10? For that money, it is hardly worth it. "Stole" is a very serious accusation! :s I have always found the pub to serve quality food and friendly service over the years and it is very popular. As to prices, you are in an afluent area of the South Hams, prices are higher as you are getting a premium product. I will not be put off by this complaint and to anyone who is thinking of going to the Ship Inn, go because you will love the atmosphere and food!!!

This pub is shocking! I went for a meal with my family and paid for a round of drinks at the bar. The bar tender wrote these drinks down and so i asked to make sure that they would not appear on the bill as i had already paid for them. he assured me that they wouldn't. My boyfriend also asked to double check.
........one VERY expensive meal later (not worth the money, you are purely paying for the view).....
a few days later i found the receipts (my mother in law had paid and therefore had not checked the bill) we had been charged for the drinks!!! I phoned the pub and i believe spoke to the manager to whom i explained why i was phoning. I was spoken to like i was lying and trying to pull a fast one! I was told to send a copy of the receipts and only if she could find the evidence on the till roll would i get my money back. She was very rude and non apologetic!
This wasn't a great deal of money 10 or so but out of principle i did as asked and sent a copy of the receipts along with a letter explaining things.
A few days later i recieved a cheque for the exact amount (to the penny!) along with the photocopy that i had sent. there was not a letter, there was no apology or even a 'with compliments' slip!
Considering they 'stole' my money (if we had walked out not paying then im sure they would have contacted the police!) would have thought a sorry could be the least they could have done and if they are going to be so 'exact' about the money then they owe me for the envelope, the stamp, the photocopying......and my time!!!
The question is how often do they do this???? a good little money earner for them?????? if you go here - check what you have paid for!

Driving down the narrowest of narrowest roads to reach this pub I thought it had better be worth it. Well you can not grumble about the setting - fantastic. The selection of ales fantastic. The price of the food - fantastically .... high. What do you do, drive back up the hill on an empty stomach or stay and have lunch? We stayed. 11.95 for a Sunday roast (1 extra for pork), half that price anywhere else. The plates were very very hot, but the food was on the cold side. I'll give the food 1 out of 5 but the real ale top marks (5). About six to choose from and not all the usual ones you see. A word of warning. Do not park too near the water like some twit did. He had to wade through a foot of water to get to his car after the tide came in!

Beautifully located at the end of a creek in what must be one of the prettiest villages in Devon. Choice of either a cosy bar on a couple of levels inside or you can sit and watch the boats from the large terrace. It's very clean and well kept and looks as if it has been recently refurbished however this has been very well done so it hasn't lost it's character. They do very good food, on the pricey side but well worth it. However you won't feel out of place just dropping in for a pint, as many of the locals obviously do.
A good range of well kept, mainly West Country ales. Didn't try any but the wine list looked pretty comprehensive as well. Good service on my visit so not much more I could ask for in a pub. Just one small complaint, it's on the wrong side of the creek for the best of the afternoon sun, but that really is churlish!
Another plus is that it's well located for walking a very stunning section of the south west coast path with a couple of fairly easy circular walks possible from the village.

What a great pub. Perhaps a little over soign, but perfect for a lovely long leisurely lunch, especially outside on a sunny day, watching boats potter up and down. Ahhhh!
Great food (yeah - not cheap), great beer, great atmosphere, nice people.

good pub ,expensive but good food.as the swan over the road is closedit gets very busy.best to book .Plenty of locals hogging the bar area

Great food, Great beer in a Great location, this pub has it all. No denying the restaurant menu is expensive, we ate from the Bar menu and shared a starter and that was plenty of food for us and we both have big apetites. The Steak and Kidney pie was the best for a long time, shame we don't live next door!

decent ales summerskills -tamar, Pincetown jail ale and IPA all in good condition

The Ship Inn Wow! What can I say about this place its the best ever, the best Real British Ale local to the region, Real British Food from Devon farms, Location, Location (on the water), good customer service, a welcoming environment and a Home away from Home. This pub recently changed owner and I am happy to say the new owner did not change much, he did not have to. I love everything about this place.

Re-visited this pub in September 2007. First time I'd been in the area for 3 years and it was good to return.
They keep a good selection of beers, which were all good (yep tried 'em all) and they had some pretty good wines too.
Food was excellent and of course the pub is in a fantastic setting.
It is quite pricey but they're catering for a holiday set who happily stump up 2000 p.w. to hire a house in the village, so it's no more than to be expected.

Admittedly the pub is located in a beautiful area but the food certainly isnt worth the prices there and they def. need to sort out the paying your bill situation.

Visited this excellent establishment over the weekend. This coincided with the completion of the Revelstoke Run, which is for those younger and [very much] fitter than myself. A really good time was being had by all - finishing line, applause, prize-giving, quaffing of re-invigorating healthy drinks, etc. The pub: or pub-restaurant, really. Good Thatcher's Cider, and Tamar ale ['nice, light, and a good lunchtime ale' per SWMBO]. Excellent food - good menu, with food really well-cooked. Whilst it is understood the establishment has been sold in the recent months [the old owners moving to Plymouth's Barbican area], I am advised that nothing much has changed; food quality and quantity are both fine. Serving staff all pleasaant and helpful - thanks! Drawbacks - well - it's not really cheap, but as you get exactly what it says on the menu, well-cooked, and in good portion sizes, the value-for-money is pretty reasonable. The pub has a lot of interesting memorabilia, pictures etc. Most are ship-linked. Strong eight.

Cracking place, not exactly a pure pub anymore as the food is almost the main reason to visit... Service is always top class, and the beers are well looked after.
Get a seat outdoors on a hot day for lunch and you'll end up staying for dinner!!!
|
Lovely pub in a fantastic location (if a bit tricky to get to - winding, narrow roads). Good selection of well-kept real ales and some great food - if a little pricey.
On a sunny day sitting outside on the terrace can't be beaten. You never want to leave!

Had lunch here with my dad yesterday - thought the food was really superb - beer is good too. Only thing that irked me was having to queue for 15 mins to pay, which seems stupid when the cheque is brought to your table. if you are eating they won't bring bar drinks either. Not that that should spoil a very pleasant experience. Watch the tide though!!

I love this pub. Great food, great cider, great ambiance and very friendly staff. I sent them an e-mail about my pleasant stay and they even replied the same day with a thank-you! Very efficient. Not too posh for me at all; it's nice to be treated as a guest!

Fantastic views if the tides in. Yes the food is expensive but it's probably worth it on a nice sunny day if you are outside. Not really a local's pub, more a gastro one as mentioned before.

A bit London for Devon? Comparing the Ship to a "gastro-pub" is an awful thing to do.. OK, its more than a village boozer, yes it does excellent food, yes the people working there serve you in a quietly cheerful manner. Whats wrong with that, and whats London about it?
I think the easy going, beautifully located pub is one of the best of its kind in the country. And I wish more country pubs made the effort to catch up!!
