Staying nearby a couple of weeks ago , we were pointed towards this place by comments in the visitors book. What a find. My wife and I called in for a quick drink on the Sunday night to make a couple of bookings during the following week. On every visit we were given a really friendly welcome by whoever was on duty that night.
We ate there twice, and all four of our meals were absolutely superb. The steak and kidney pudding I had on the first visit was unbelievable.
The pub itself is a fabulous building with all its original features. My only possible criticism is that on our first visit we were given the table nearest to the Inglenook fireplace, and after a few minutes we were both overheating.
It used to belong to the long defunct Strong brewery , and the name 'STRONG'is still writ large in red letters on the front of the building. A fine selection of Ringwood ales completed a very fine picture.
Ten out of ten , with not a moments hesitation.

This is a really excellent place. Holidaying in the area and on a walk, we stopped by on a late Saturday lunchtime for lunch which was quite excellent, if somewhat on the pricey side. Drinks were fine too and staff very friendly.

In my search for the perfect country pub this is as close as I have got (so far). I visited it several times whilst staying nearby, sometimes for just a drink and twice for meals. The staff, whoever was on duty, were always very friendly and welcoming; the beers were excellent; and the food was excellent as well. The outside is picture perfect, but I especially like the fact that the interior has not been prettified, it has been left genuinely rustic (not fake rustic). One bar has been devoted to food, but there is still a drinker's bar. All in all a pub I could spend a lot of time (and indeed I tried to!!). 10/10.

Visited this excellent pub whilst visiting family in Salisbury. The location is to die for - we enjoyed an excellent meal in the garden. The steak and kidney pud (with the trimmings) was a joy, as were the the meals of fish platter and cheddar ploughmans chosen by my other members of my family. I,Personally, not driving , sampled the Palmers Copper Ale followed by the Timothy Taylor and the Bitter? very nice! and well presented. The staff were brilliant and welcoming. This Pub should not be missed rating? 10/10

A real log fire was burning nicely in the bar, and I chose the Palmers Copper Ale which was very good, although it was just a bit too cold for me. London Pride and two other ales were also available on the hand pumps. The soup and the cafetiere coffee to follow were fine. Glad to see some of the locals were using the bar as well as some passers by. Worth another visit next time I'm passing this way.

Not a bad pub, Tuesday night in Octobers probably not the most representative time but the pub just lacked something. The staff were fine.
Cant remember which beers they had but the one I had was very average and nothing unusual so went onto the Old Rosie scrumpy. Not a bad pint but 3.20 a pint? Southern prices maybe. The food was fine but certainly WELL overpriced.
All in all, The Compasses in Damerham (just up the road) is a better bet.

What a delightful pub. the new owners Kerry and Andrew have really added something special to the Rose & Thistle. Lovely welcoming atmosphere to a real country treat. The food was delicious and all home cooked. Superb menu which apparently changes daily. Well worth a visit, again and again!

First visit to find Andrew and Kerry as new mine hosts having come in 2 1/2 months ago from East London. Very friendly and beer (4 ales) top class. Tried Palmers Copper Ale as driving and only 3.7 abv. Andrew is very keen on real ale and looks to be bringing in guest ales in near future. Food was good. Will certainly be back shortly.

A lovely find in a idyllic village... Food was lovely and the wine list extensive. Pride was off but the Palmers seemed to be kept well.
Will certainly be back.

We all enjoyed Mother's Day lunch here yesterday. I have to say I haven't been so impressed by pub food for such a long time. The roast potatoes were amazing, none of this deep fried rubbish you get in so many pubs now and the banoffi pie was to die for. It's very popular and has limited parking so make sure you book and get there early. I'll be returning very soon !

Firstly I would like to apologise for the seemingly rather less than perfect service referred to in the previous comment, a print out of which is now hanging in our kitchen!! We are always happy to receive feedback from customers - both good and bad - but it is particularly helpful if negative issues are raised with us when they occur so that we can deal with them immediately. We always strive to provide the best possible service, and receive many positive and encouraging comments from our customers

I have made comments about this pub before which have always been favourable, however I went there recently with friends and was very much put off by the rough service. We were four taking lunch in the inside eating area close to the door leading to the kitchen; not ideal but my real concern was the total lack of interest that the waitress displayed. The plates were 'plonked' on the table, no comment from her e.g. hope you enjoy your meal or something similar. She was clearly pissed of at having to work when the sun was shining outside. When my plate was put down some of the salad fell onto the floor; she didn't notice or chose not to so there was no comment from her. We had taken friends there hoping to impress; no luck i'm afraid. We will probably give it a go sometime in the future as the pub is smashing and the location equally so. Oh, by the way, our food was average.

Food is good. Beer is usually good. Location is charming and it appears to be well frequented. Interior is a bit shabby.
Parking behind pub. Garden in front. Lots of smoking in bar.

WOW I must take a picture and up load it. Beautiful pub & garden. Good selection of drinks, cold beer fridge, friendly staff, no corperate feel what so ever. This is worth a two hour journey out from London using your SAT NAV just for a summers drink (Ever if petrol ever reaches 1.50 a litre) The Food looks real (ie Not Brake Bros or 3663)

Only discovered this pub in the last year and I totally agree with the comments below. The service food and beer are excellent, and the ambience is just right. Never mind the signal as the use of mobile phones in the pub is banned; great!

Delicious food, exquistely pretty village.

It lives up to its website page and is in the kind of village where you expect to see Miss Marple trimming a bush. Don't bother with your mobile - no network signals get through. Exquistely rural.
