Prefer to find an unspoilt pub serving real ale and good food at a reasonable price. Difficult to find nowadays, some pub "improvements" have succeeded in ruining the character of pubs, although I have to admit a few gastro type pubs have managed to serve decent beer with good food. Large screen TVs, games and jukeboxes are not for me.

The Swan, Enford

Rushed in just about 2.20 one weekday afternoon, the only other customers were a couple finishing their lunch. There were some 5 different ales on the handles which looked appetising - unfortunately I couldn't have one and was in a hurry so I had a coffee - excellent it was too, with a 2 cup cafetiere. The pub sign is now suspended over the road on the gantry once again, the pub interior is from a bygone age yet smart. Service was pleasant and helpful, I must go back to sample the ales andsd atmosphere some other time

The Bell, Amesbury

Narrow stone frontage but goes back a long way. Had a pint of Abbot which was in its usual JDW excellent condition and a beef madras curry as it was curry day - all for less than £6! Service was quick and I was asked if the food was OK after it had arrived at the table. Time was around noon and although quiet, customers kept on arriving. My table at the front nearest the road gave me a good view of the large TV showing Sky news with subtitles. Worth returning to when I'm next in the area.
