Welcoming village pub, with a large open fire and ales from the local Shalford brewery - had Stoneley Bitter. Was surprised to read this has been a Champion Beer of Britain finalist, as it wasn't anything special. Decent, if 80s style, good value pub food. Nothing at all wrong with the place, but not quite enough that is sufficiently fab to justify its rating here - which is perhaps a touch high.

Having been recommended to visit The George, we have returned several times and always enjoyed sizeable portions of good food and an impressive choice of beers on tap.
A warm atmosphere, with a homely feel generated by low beamed ceilings and an open fire - what more could you ask for on a cold Winter's evening?
Thoroughly recommended and worth a drive out.

I recently hired the pub out for private function (My uncle's 50th Birthday party). The Food laid on was fantastic, with an atmosphere to fit. The band that the landlord sourced were fantastic (It is also true that Matt Cardle was due to play at another function held at The George but Xfactor fame beckoned! I suspect the landlord has an uncanny knack for spotting up and coming talent!)
Also a great pub for atmosphere during major sporting events. I imagine the RWC 2011 will be special because it is in summer and last year for the footy world cup they moved a giant widescreen plasma outside, had a bbq which was a bargain, 2.00 Sausage rolls and free roasties on tap! This is a pub run in a traditional way where the customer comes first with modern attitudes to what a modern punter requires; large portions, great beer and good value entertainment (all of which are locally sourced!)

A wonderful warm and homely village pub just outside Braintree. I dropped in for a bite to eat with my girlfriend last month whilst out on our motorbike. a fire was roaring in the hearth and there was a friendly hubbub of voices at the bar. Both men and women were enjoying a Sunday afternoon drink which is always a good sign and it was clear that most people knew eachother which was why there was such a good vibe in there. We were warmly welcomed and treated to a fabulous home cooked meal for about 10 each. I had chicken Kiev and my girlfriend had Salmon en croute. Both were excellent and the eating area was attractive and cosy. We had a nice chat with the landlord and a couple of customers before heading on our way. I should mention that the setting is an ancient 17th century building replete with wooden beams and low ceielings with ample parking and an outside seating area although since it was January it was the warmth inside that was the big draw. All in all a perfect experience and highly recommended if you are passing that way.

I was recommended to this pub in Shalford by a freind a year back. I have been there on a multiplicity occasions since, simply because the food, service and attitude of the management and staff is superb. A fine selection of real ales, well kept by the owners rivals my all time favourite pub in Stock Essex, namely the "Hoop" a several times winner of the CAMRA top pub. The food is brilliant value for money and I just dont know how they manage to provide such large portions for what they charge. I would wholeheartedy recommend this pub to both serious real ale drinkers or just passing visitors with or without families looking for a great value drinl & lunch.

Ignore reviews pe-dating 2010 as new management.
blue scrumpy is correct-opening hours erratic esp on a sunday.
The one and only time i visited this pub under its current management - there was an argument over double charging. The landlady who had been taking money when drinks ordered in the usual way suddenly declared drinks ordered an hour earlier had not been paid for claiming she had not taken the money then because one person had not finished drink and not ready for service of next drink ordered. never heard of publican not taking the money when drink ordered unless tab agreed upon -a recipe for arguments . My friend was intimdated into paying what she was sure was for a second time since she had no proof that had paid when ordered. Subsequently the landlord handled situation in an aggressive manner.
Beer is passable; beer "garden" is part of car park adjacent to quite a busy road. several more attractive and welcoming pubs in the area. this one to be avoided.
rated 1 cos at least it was open!

The third of four consecutive pubs we found closed last night. So rule this one out if you fancy a drink on a Sunday evening. It's hardly surprising that pubs are closing down at a rapid rate of knots when the only one in miles showing any signs of life (all the internal and external lights were on) is having a lock-in at 7pm in the evening! We weren't the only people trying to get a pint. So I hate to think how much business they are losing. We then continued onto the Dog Inn in Wethersfield, only to find it is now an Indian restaurant. I suspect the George will go the same way soon. I normally reserve judgement on pubs that are closed when I visit, but as we're talking about having a beerintheevening and you simply can't get one on a Sunday evening, I'll score this a 0/10. Maybe I'll be back in this neck of the woods someday to revise my score. But for now, it's about as useless as the closed Indian restaurant in Shalford.

Well renowned locally for its food and its beer, the George is what a decent Village Pub should be. Beers are sourced from Adnams and Woodfordes, but most notably from the local Shalford Brewery. I was able to try Shalford's Stonely Bitter and Levelly Stout on a recent visit and both were excellent. Food is also very good with a wide choice including and excellent mixed grill.

Dropped in here on Sunday afternoon, had a full roast dinner (huge portions) and tried 4 of the 6 real ales on tap (luckily I was not driving). Very friendly pub with a massive real fire crackilng away.... this is how village pubs should be. We will be gojng back.

A fantastic warm pub in the picturesque villiage of Shalford near Braintree. The only pub in the village and immediate area. Good food and atmosphere. Being sold in early 04' with good new things to come. Good destination pub for the future I feel.
