The George, Shalford
A wonderful warm and homely village pub just outside Braintree. I dropped in for a bite to eat with my girlfriend last month whilst out on our motorbike. a fire was roaring in the hearth and there was a friendly hubbub of voices at the bar. Both men and women were enjoying a Sunday afternoon drink which is always a good sign and it was clear that most people knew eachother which was why there was such a good vibe in there. We were warmly welcomed and treated to a fabulous home cooked meal for about 10 each. I had chicken Kiev and my girlfriend had Salmon en croute. Both were excellent and the eating area was attractive and cosy. We had a nice chat with the landlord and a couple of customers before heading on our way. I should mention that the setting is an ancient 17th century building replete with wooden beams and low ceielings with ample parking and an outside seating area although since it was January it was the warmth inside that was the big draw. All in all a perfect experience and highly recommended if you are passing that way.
