Palmers pub, palmers ales. Not everyone likes this stuff; IO don't but otherwise a decent enough pub

Visited recently on the bank holiday weekend.
Impressed to see Palmers ales on the bar, one of my favourite brewers.
Clientele appeared to be very much related to the proximity of the country house (NT crowd), and they appeared mainly to be there for the food, which looked good- largish portions for those that judge simply on that. We had starter-sized meals, and these were good.
Our dog was welcome, as was our three-year old daughter and the staff were friendly.

Had lunch here in July. Food and service were fine and staff friendly. Three Palmer's on, including Copper Ale. Based on my experienc e I would go back again.

Went here a while ago and thought the ale (Palmers) was good. Had some food as well, and that was not bad either. The one thing I would say was that the reason for going there in the first place was to check it out for a subsequent visit with family, kids etc. On the first occasion (a Saturday), there was tons of choice on the menu - including lots of vegetarian options on a specials board (around 6 or 7 dishes, more than most pubs bother with). The second visit (a Sunday lunchtime) - no vegetarian food at all. None. Nada. Zip. Bupkiss. Now, some people might think "Well, it's a Sunday - they were probably doing roasts". Yes. But one of the meals on the menu for that first visit was (wait for it) a veggie roast, with all the trimmings. So they obviously can do it. To not have it on, on a Sunday, and have no other veggie options - that's just daft. All that said, the pub is a good one, really

We now have skittled here for a whole season and found the place to be thoroughly welcoming, with the skittlers grub (massive platters of sandwiches) to be more than sufficient, although some of the lads have said they would like chips and pies/sausages or the like. A minor point however, as we have voted to go back for next year. Bar staff are always friendly and charming and mine hosts Kevin and Carolyn have done a great job particularly after the last incumbents (apparently; I was warned off by a former local) Beer is Palmers and has never failed, in fact it has Cask Marque accreditation so you can taste and try, before you buy. Haven't dined here yet but food always looks good. Can be heaving or quiet(ish) depending on... well who knows these days? Pub trade can be variable even on a Friday night (when we skittle)

I seldom feel compelled to write reviews online but a visit to The Phelips Arms today has made we want to warn other visitors from going anywhere near this place.
We visited the pub last week after a great visit to Montacute House. It looked OK - we didn't have high expectations for anything other than a decent lunch for four adults and three hungry children.
I won't go into much detail about the food - other than to say it was terrible and clearly anything other than the "home-made" of the menu - but the experience was summed up by the *incredibly* grumpy owner/barmaid demanding 60p per pint of tap water when we had spent over 50 on food and drink. Under any circumstances that is incredibly tight but my warning is simple - DO NOT GO TO THE PHELIPS ARMS IN MONTACUTE!!!

i recently went in for lunch iin this pub, and the meal was very nice. at first i ordered 2 pints of coke. i nearly had a heart attack when the barlady asked for 6 pounds and ten p!!!!! for 2 pints of coke!!!!!! i thought she got mixed up with the prices of two pints of beer!!!! i am still shocked at how much they charged. is this the same for all brewery run pubs? i have never paid this much before. the most i have paid for a pint of coke is 2.20!!!

Ok ish village pub serving Palmers, allbeit in good condition. Tried a Guinness and wished I hadn't. Since when has it had cidery flavours? As a result lower marks than perhaps it merits, being the only pub open in this village now.

Decent Country Pub, friendly staff and the palmers beer was very well kept. I did not try the food, but it looked very nice. Menu was more restaurant than standard Pub Grub. Very handy place for real ale drinkers to go before a Yeovil Town game as it is handily placed for the ground (Driving rather than walking), and by going through Montacute you avoid the traffic.

We spent a fantastic Valentines evening in this beautiful country pub. The pub was full to bursting which gave it a wonderful atmosphere of peaple enjoying themselves. We were warned that there would be a delay in getting our food as it was so busy but it was well worth the wait as the food was really first rate ,you could tell that everything was fresh and cooked to order. The landlady and staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. The evening was rounded off with a fun night of quizes and games. I couldn't recommend this little country pub enough, for good food, friendly staff and a wonderful ambiance

This is a great local pub, with warm and welcoming landlords Kev and Carolyn. The food is great and good value. We have eaten there several times in the last 6 months and everything has been delicious and beautifully cooked. There is a good choice also. Every village needs a good pub at its centre, and these new owners are doing a great job at providing one.

A very good village pub with friendly staff and good, well kept beers. Modest menu of typical pub grub at reasonable prices.

Stopped by yesterday (Bank Holiday Sunday) and found it well-kept, very clean, with a good selection of beers (and Thatcher's Cider) and quite good food (though I only had a sandwich, the wife had a bit more). But at 1:00 there were only 6 customers in the whole place. One couple came in, looked over the many empty tables, and apparently decided that SOMETHING must be wrong so left. I can't figure out the emptiness at what should have been a busy time. I found it a very good place indeed.

Returned after a"prompt" from the new landlords.Nice atmosphere ,well kept pint of Palmers .Will visit again soon to check out the food.

TOTALLY IGNORED FOR TEN MINUTES-SO LEFT

very dissapointed with this pub, we had heard that they had good food and it was local.
Lovely looking pub, but a very uninspired menu. I had the "seared tuna" from the menu (9.50)which was inedible due to it being cooked to within an inch of it life, a can of tuna would have been more palatable. my wife then found an inch long catterpilla in her salad, redering the rest of her lunch inedible.
no massive issues there, you may say, neutralised by an apology and maybe the two soft drinks removed from the bill. however when i highlighted the issues to the landlady - no apologies were offered from the chef (the landlady's husband) for the bug in the salad or the state of the tuna, and it was explained that that was the way most people wanted there "seared tuna" cooked - would have been nice to have the choice though! and why describe it as "SEARED" i.e. pink in the middle.
The customer service was lacking so much that i felt compelled to post this review. had a token discount or even an apology been offered this could have been avoided. I hope this was a one-off or bad day, as I am sure i would be along in giving this pub a wide berth - Shame!

Very good food and beer. This is more of a retaurant with a hotel than an old world pub as you would probably expect from the outside.

Great beer (Palmers)in a great atmosphere. The locals are very friendly and the food is good. What more could one ask?. It is in a traditional 17th-century listed hamstone building overlooking the village square and close to historic Montacute House. One of its key features is the pleasant garden. .
