Good Beer Guide 2019 Entry - and well worthy. Like Mr Mallard, I had the a Kelham Island Bitter and it was perfect.
Lovely hob gate fire. Good food. Good Service.

Pleasant enough tourist pub in a pleasant enough tourist village. Ale was on good form and worth dropping by for - The Kelham Island Bitter in particular.
On a recent visit to Castleton (on Garland Day), we chose this pub and found the beer and food very pleasant. At the time, the ales on offer were mostly (if not all) Farmers ales from the Bradfield Brewery, near Sheffield. We tried the Farmers Stout and Farmers Brown Cow, both of which were excellent. The pub was comfortable and well kept, and the service was friendly and efficient.
The beer I have had here (Landlord and an Abbeydale) on the last two occasions has been subpar. The staff have not been particularly friendly or clued-up either. it is a shame - the bar itself is very nice and this could be a smashing place. Perhaps I went at the wrong time (winter lunchtime).
Beer choice was a little more limited than some Castleton pubs, but the ale that I tried was very good. There is a fairly large bar area as well as a big room set up with dining tables

Great pub.
I visited in February with my wife and 4 year old. It was a cold day so it was great to walk into a pub with 2 real log fires. The service was very good with 4-5 good real beers on tap. The food was good as well and very reasonably priced. The 4 year old was given a colouring pad and won a prize for completing it. I would certainly go back.

Visited last week, they had 5 ales on tap. Landlord which was ok, Sheffield Brewery's Seven Hills (v nice) Everards Tiger (not bad) and I can't remember the others. We didn't bother with the restaurant as apparently the food is the same as served in the bar, had a mixed grill which was a heartly plateful and did what a mixed grill should, filled me full to the gills with tasty meat. I enjoyed my visit and would happily go back.

I visited here several times over Christmas & New Year 2010, having last visited Feb 2010. What a difference! Super choice of beers, all at correct temperature, staff friendly, & I would say to anyone who has been before & was unhappy, "try it again". well done John and Vicky.

BEER... Well what can you say about the Nags Head? I've been here loads over the years and seen staff come and go at a rate of knots... The Cask lines have increased and the old regulars of Lanlord & Black Sheep kept. The temperature of the beer has improved immensely used to be far too cold. Spoke to young chap behind the bar regarding the ales, He wasn't that knowledgable about them but knew which breweries they came from though. He told me that the chef had took over running the hotel and spent a lot of time in the cellar looking after the ale. The price and quality of the cask is really good now and would recommend anyone touring castleton to pop in and try. Keep up the good work chef whoever you are.

What's going on here? The previous post doesn't even mention the word beer! There are plenty of hotel review sites around on the net so why don't you go there if you want to have a moan about a hotel? For the record the beer was good here both in choice and condition and the staff very friendly. The atmosphere was warm and cosy. I would definitely go here again.

The Olde Nags Head is professionally presented in the net BUT did not meet up to our expectations on arrival. Young man on reception who constantly sniffed rather than clearing his nose was the start, waiters walked around with their shirts hanging out .. !! Our room (Castleton) looked super on the web-page and was described along the line of LUXURIOUS (certainly on the boards in front of hotel). Anyway, this was a tatty, uncared for room. Carpets and windows rotting, old/non-functional furniture (scratched and rusty mirror, wardrobe door did not close - and wardrobe had no bottom to it!). There was a HUGE hole in the wall behind the chest of drawers which was a bit frightening. The spa-bath sounded great on their webpage but the jets were rusty and old and the look of the sealing (ie no sealing) around the base of the jacuzzi was less than appealing. We did NOT use! The bathroom windows didnt open. The list of negatives was never ending. We complained. Have heard nothing til to date - so that just about sums it up. A real con. Do NOT get your hopes up re this hotel. We did and were very disappointed.
Just a short visit last weekend. Quick half of Black Sheep which was far too cold and lacked flavour. More of a hotel bar than anything else.
Called in here on the recommendation of my brother-in-law who really rated the food. We were not disappointed either - chose from the "sandwich" section of the menu and were presented with baguettes the size of torpedoes accompanied by salad and real chips that looked like each one was carved from a single whole spud. The beer range was limited to Black Sheep and the ubiquitous GK IPA, but the pint I had was fine. Perhaps the best thing about this visit however was when, as a long-shot I asked the barman if he knew a guy that I first knew 40 years ago, last heard of in Castleton. "Yep. Does pub quizzes. Works round the corner in The George. He's on til 6 tonight" Next stop The George!
Stayed here a couple of days ago but will not be returning. After walking all day was looking forward to a long hot soak in the bath but no hot water! My wife had to boil kettles to wash hair in hand basin! When complained about this staff tended not to believe this and said 'there's plenty of hot water down here'. Next morning chef failed to turn up to cook the 'award winning breakfast' and lone member of staff acted as barman, receptionist, waiter and cook, not surprisingly doing none proficiently. To sum up, appalling service, will not be returning to this establishment.
this has the potential to be a great pub, but the ever changing staff means there is no continuity & no committment to customer satisfaction, but having said that my son & his family stayed there in November, & were well satisfied with the room, service & food.

Booked a table for 8 for a 50th Birthday party last Saturday. After being sat at the table for 15 minutes the Manageress gave us a cock and bull story about the gas going off in the kitchen and they were unable to serve us. We know this was not true because other diners were getting fed. So we hot footed it over to the Bulls Head were we got good service and good food at a reasonable price. The Nags Head is a joke and will be closed within 12 months mark my word.

Had a fantastic stay here. Lovely staff and delicious food. The room was a little tired but all under renovation i believe to be really 'des res' for next year. Will definately return. Super location and the staff could not do enough to for you.
Good beer and new decor. Friendly service, although one barman was slightly creepy. A decent enough pint, though, and worth the visit.
Terrible.
After a very long, wet, walk, me and a friend popped in here after looking at the reasonably priced menu outside. We needed some hearty grub and a good pint. Instead we were welcomed by a bitter, middle aged woman who found joy in completely ignoring us and disappearing somwehere upstairs. When she returned she continued to blank us. We couldn't believe how rude she was, we laughed in disbelief and walked out. The worst service I have received in a long, long time.
The service is terrible. After a long walk we headed here for a well deserved pint and some food. We were greated by a woman behind the bar, who walked off as soon as we entered. 5 minutes later she returned, walked behind the bar, and stared into space clicking her pen. As she was so rude, we voted with our feet, and walked out.
Went there over the Christmas holiday but since my last visit in October, almost all the staff has changed, including the manager, who seems determined to alienate the staff, customers & locals alike., As such I only visited it twice on this visit & I wouldn't be surprised if it was closed by the time I visit it again. Beer was ok, though only Black Sheep & Tim Taylors on offer.
I was there early October 08 for 2 weeks, didn't stay at the hotel, but visited it every day, & although I didn't eat there,( I don't mix eating with drinking), the food looked very good & everyone seemed happy with it. They now have a new cook, Ant, & Suzie behind the bar. The beer was superb, look forward to going back for Christmas.
Stayed here for 2 nights and was welcomed by a nice friendly white bearded bloke who showed us to our room. Our room ladyblower was clean but the shower is still naff. A good selection of real ales are available and the timothy taylors landlord was a good pint if a little underfilled.! We ordered steak and ale pie with chips and seasonal veg and ended up with burnt pie hidden with gravy and what looked like a tin of peas heated up and tipped on the plate. The chips were nice though. When the waitress asked if everything was ok i complained about the burnt pie but no one got back to us or appologised. We decided not to eat here again after that. The breakfast was ok The kitchen staff are all youngish people and i overheard one manager calling one of his kitchen staff a pillock which i thought was unprofessional especially whilst customers were in the bar drinking and eating. I also hate to see the chefs outside smoking when im going to eat a meal they have prepared. The home made pies in the george just round the corner was first class nosh and a good pint of bombadier to go with it. All in all it wasent a bad stay at ye old nags head for the price of 99 for 2 of us for 2 nights. The burnt pies should have never been served to us and when we complained they should have done something and not ignored it. Needs a little more work and better kitchen staff to make it a more enjoyable stay.

Stayed in Ladybower room - Room lovely, carpets not hoovered, breakfasts lovely, shower too hot (couldnt adjust without losing waterflow)
Stayed overnight here in April. The jacuzzi was a real treat after a tough days walking. We ate at the carvery and thoroughly enjoyed it. Three meats on offer and plenty of vegetable choice. Pleased to report that I managed seconds since it is 'All you can eat'. Beers on offer included Timothy Taylor and Black Sheep. I stayed on the Taylor which was perfect. 8/10 which includes rating on the room.
I had my christmas dinner here. I found the meat to be very dry, the veg was under cooked and the gravy was more like custard. I had to wait an exceptionally long period of time to recieve my meal. The service was very poor and I certainly would not recommend this pub to anyone. I felt that whilst we were eating our meal we were being constantly watched which made me and my family very uncomfortable. Their hospitality was very poor and unpleasing.
i am not happy with this pub the staff dont care for custimers and would rather kiss up to the boss the meats are sent out not cooked and there is no local discounts in my opinion i would not recomed this public house to anyone!
Great little pub, with a fantastic carvery restaurant. Staff very friendly. Centre of town which is great.

Very poor service You have to ring a bell on the bar and wait several minutes before someone can be arsed coming to serve you. Got the impression the proprietors thought we were intruding in their house and not a public house at all. Had Black Sheep which was very good but couldn't face ringing the bell to inconvenience the staff by serving me again.
We ate here on a Sunday...What a carvery, amd all you can eat, the best we have ever had. Meat was juicy and succulent and all the very was perfect and we got to hve another plate full. AWESOME 10/10
I stongly recommend the all you can eat carvery - just what you need after a day's walking. Beer selection was ok if unspectacular.
Very good Sunday Roast as ever by the angry little chef.
Defo the best food in the village.
I recently had a belt busting 'all you can eat' Sunday carvery and it was fantastic. There's great beer too, with Erdinger (or more aptly Edringer) on tap!
I have to disagree with the comments below, I met Ben on my visit, a very friendly and handsome young man. The French/Canadian chef, Dan, is always on hand for a laugh as well, all in all a great team of waitresses, waiters and chefs.
However, the best thing about the place is how they have welcomed Sophie into the kitchen. She's on a local authority special needs placement and on all accounts is learning well, currently in charge of the frier.
I can't recommend the Nag's Head enough and will be back there this Sunday!
A cute establishment, went for the fabulous carvery on sunday, lovely food, and service was good, although the barman ( think his name is ben) reminded us of that bloke from the gooneys - hey you guys!... apart from him, all the staff seemed polite and friendly, theres also a female chef who is aparently (according to our male friends) a fine piece of hot ass, all in all a lovely pub, gogogo!
very cosy, freehouse, pub. landlord nigel's monday quiz is very inventive and entertaining. good selection of local and national ales, as well as erdinger on tap, headache juice of the finest quality! the head chef guy is a fantastic chef as well as a top bloke (although i hear he had trouble with the urinals on a recent holiday to latvia, definitely a story worth hearing!) the staff overall are welcoming and friendly, especially as a large scottish fellow has left the establishment, and the bumbling barman james is always value for money. a large selection of rooms to let compliment this lovely country pub.

quick update - back in village last weekend - they've done up the restaurant, new everything, smart - beer still ok as well (!)

good traditional pub, best in village (of the 5 I visited anyway!), excellent real ales, wide range of food at reasonable prices (I had the beef and Stilton sandwich - VERY nice!). They advertise a Monday quiz and weekend carvery.
Magnificent pub in all respects. Whilst I was there, a "singing" Jack Rusell was a regular visitor. If you don't believe me ask Gordon the barman.

visited march 2006 for 10 nights. Superb beer at reasonable price. Staff, including Gordon, very welcoming.
