Had heard about the Adelphi quite a lot and thought I need to try it. I had hyped the place up too much in my mind. It's quite a spectacular interior that is quite pretty to look at, but the ale was lacking. I had a pint of Roosters Yankee at £ 4.30 and it looked flat and had barely any taste. May be it's the pint but I was immensely disappointed and I'm not sure I'd want to return. May be I should have been safe and plunged With a pint of Landlord, we'll never know.

Oh no!. One of my favourite pubs hit by the floods.
Those damn floods.
Needed a local to bring me to this pub and I am glad that he did.
A superb Victorian boozer. Lots of little rooms to explore.
A decent pint of Landlord.
Absolute classic which I guess may have been the tap for the now dead Tetley brewery. A variety of beers on offer including Leeds pale and Orkney Dark island to be drunk amidst Victorian splendour.
Classic Victorian pub, remarkably little spoilt. Now a buy pub attracting people of all ages with a range of beers and food. The freshly cooked food comes from a small menu and is well-priced. A small range of real ales, lagers and craft beers. I had the Leeds Pale Ale which was excellent. Not cheap at £3.45. It shows what can be done to keep a pub alive, considering the Adelph is not close to any housing.

This pub does not charge for it's beer. Yes, that's right, the beer is free. Instead they operate an extortion racket where your pockets are ruthlessly gone through and emptied while at the bar. The prices in this pub are theft, pure and simple and the landlord (or whoever sets the prices) is a thief. I have just been in the Adelphi for the first and last time and I refuse to dignify their prices by describing them as simply exorbitant or daylight robbery. £3.74 for a pint of 3.9% bitter in a northern city is beyond such lame descriptions. The last person who passed through Yorkshire and was as much of a thief as whoever runs this place was riding a horse called Black Bess and was arrested and hung upon arrival at York. The same fate should befall the criminal who has just robbed me. Note that the Adelphi is directly opposite the Red Lion, a fabulous Sam Smiths pub that serves the best pint of that company's bitter that I have ever drunk and that will charge you just £1.80 for the privilege.
EXcellent interior, well worth the visit. Reasonable range of beers as well, particularly good for foreign draft ones. However, the piped muzak seemed right out of place & made sure I didnt stay for a second pint.
Nice decor and great selection of ales. However i have been short changed twice in 2 visits! Both times fortunate to realise - but then a third time i paid by card and got charged for an extra pint when i checked the receipt (!) - BEWARE!
Very expensive, 3.20 for a pint of Leeds best, worth it just to have a look at the victorian interior what its struggling to hang on to!
This used to be one of my favourite pubs in Leeds but attempts to trend it up is detracting from its genuine Victorian charm - you can't take your eyes off the trendy lighting, funky wallpaper and how much lighter your wallet is. Of eight city centre pubs, the Adelphi's price for a standard pint (Timothy Taylor) proved the most expensive.
An amazing facade and great bar now alas trendied up with eclectic furniture, board games and wasabi peas. I have found the bar staff to be less than pleasant and although hand pulled bitter is still offered it is not served to any standard and the price at 3 and above is downright disgraceful. Somewhere to go once in your life to see what is left of the great interior decoration but definitely not somewhere to venture back to or linger in...........

Interesting boozer but the problem with this place is that they know their target audience is people under 30 so they play on it. Every now and then you get a few hen and stag parties. Not a regular occurence though.
Now for the beer..what was on today. Peroni, Franszlaner, Roaring Meg, Mort Subite, Fruli, Sierra Nevada, Staropramen, Leffe, Kirin Ichiban, Hoegarden, Amstel, Aspall Cider, Old Rosie, Landlord, April Fool, Copper Ale. Bar staff were a bit condescending but a good selection.
Visited this pub on a previous trip to Leeds on the strength of it's CAMRA NI status but I have to agree with some of the previous reviews in that this gem has not been properly looked after, feeling somewhat rundown.
I've been wanting to say this for a long while - why oh why do the operators of a fabulous listed pub like this feel it necessary to fill it with 'contemporary shabby chic' tat that only serves to hide the many original features that are still present? This pub deserves better!
Leffe now on tap, but don't dare ask for it by the pint!
Hmmm. 3 for a Landlord, no thanks! This is Leeds not London or Dublin.
aarrgh, will someone please put this pub back the way it should be. An awful lot of features have survived:-wood panelling, mosaic floor, fireplaces etc. But it has been trashed by garish paint schemes and 'orrible furniture:-its not pandering to yuppies, just people with no taste regarding their surroundings. You only have to visit the Marble Arch in (not far away) Manchester to see how a pub can be popular with a mixed crowd, without trashing its architectural and historic features. ( take a lesson from the Victorioan shopping centre up the road). Uninspiring choice of ales, but the Landlord was ok.
Agree with previous comments, this is an imposing multi-roomed classic that is deserving of it's place on CAMRA's NI, but it's geared towards the trendy circuit crowd more than anything (described in detail below)- whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of opinion. Even if this puts you off you should consider a visit as the beer and atmosphere are good. Tried a Tetley's as we were so near the brewery which was unexciting as ever but fine. As you'd expect in this yuppie area, it's not cheap. Food served which is somewhere inbetween pub grub and gastro food. Personally, I think I'd prefer it more traditional, but all in all a decent attempt to modernise a classic without tearing the heart out of the pub.
I'd say Mr Bonser has summed up this pub pretty well, it occupies an enviable location near the river which attracts alot of the Leeds Yuppies through its doors but credit where credit is due, they had good beers on and have for the most part kept things sensible on the inside, which has several rooms as mentioned. TT Landlord was fine and the service was good. I'd come back but its probably not a place I'd spend a whole evening in.
Ornate multi-roomed Edwardian pub, just over the river Aire and close to Tetleys Brewery.
The pub is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Unspoilt Interiors.
Designed by the same architect as the Cardigan Arms and the Rising Sun in the Burley area of Leeds, the pub has much to admire internally, despite improvements to pander to Leeds yuppiedom who seem to have invaded the vicinity - look at all the loft style apartments close by. In particular, one of the rooms resembles a Turkish brothel, what with the low settees covered with white sheets. Some of the dividing glass screens have been covered up by blackboards describing how beer is made.
Reflecting the target clientele, food is a major part of the operation - not quite gastropub food, but a clear step up from normal pub food. Moroccan cooking seems to feature quite a bit.
Beer prices also reflect the target clientele - both the Landlord and the Tetleys were at prices higher than average for the area. Lots of foreign beers and lagers are also available.
Read the information board outside over the road giving the history of Bridge End - the gateway to Leeds.
Despite some dubious "improvements" from what I remember of the pub in the 1980's, this pub is still well worth seeking now

Characterful interior, with many historic features. Five real ales on today, including a very decent pint of Old Mill (Snaith) Summer Sunshine. Well worth the short walk out from the city centre.
The Adelphi is a mixed bag. Usually a decent guest ale to accompany the tetleys. I had the fishfinger sandwich mentioned a few weeks ago. I didn't expect birdeyes finest plonked down in front of me but that is what I got! I told the bar person to thank the Captain personaaly for me. Can be a bit too busy on a fri/sat night due to the twenty something art school (didn't go to art school but wear the trendy non perscription glasses anyway)crowd who hang around the bar nursing a poncy lager in a stupid glass. Not cheap but the wasabi peas are recommended.
Definately pricey! Interesting decor though, and worth a visit for that alone. Crisps were 1.10 when I last went in.
This was always an interesting pub. Overlooked by many as it is over the river from the city centre. Great Tetleys as they only have to bring the barrels from next door. I spent many happy Friday nights here when they had the "Bowie Club" upstairs,
Very close to the Tetley brewery, this is pub still has several bars rather than having been knocked into one. I enjoyed the house speciality with my pint last night, a fish finger ciabatta sandwich with lime mayonnaise and salad garnish. Much better than youd think from the description - recommended. Another punter claimed to have paid 3 for what looked like a bag of crisps, so this may support the claims of high prices by previous reviewers. The place has a friendly atmosphere.
Decor is impressive and worth visiting for that alone. I couldn't fault the beer and food for quality (although only two real ales on offer), but this place is noticeably more expensive than other pubs in Leeds. If that doesn't bother you, this place is definitely one to go to. It's also conveniently placed on your way back from the Royal Armouries.
as a mature student new to leeds a few friends recomended this lovely little gem to me,def on of my all time fave pubs. yes it is expensive, but that to me is a good thing. I would rather pay over the odd for a well maintained erdinger in a fantastic setting just to get away from the ar*eh*le students in the main area of town. A city tresure and may it stay this way for years
The pub has changed from very much a local's pub to a venue that has done an excellent job of attracting the young professionals and tourists from the nearby hotels and appartments. Taylor's Landlord now costs 2.60 a pint though!
beautiful historic pub, great beer, expensive tho so that stops me giving it a 10
A superb pub - all pubs should look like this. One of Leeds' best. Several rooms, dark woodwork, a grand entrance lobby, Victorian decor and an excellent pint of Tetley's (well it should be - it's just up the road from the brewery). A shame that one room has been 'trendified' with sofas and cushions.
Great beer, top pub

grand old Leeds boozer given a recent slightly bizzare refurb (tho' not unappealing when you get used to it). Staff were friendly but it is very expensive - pint of Tetleys 2.30!!! Worth a visit if only for a look at the stately way Victorian pubs were put together

I love the decor in this little pub - a good mix of old and new. The only criticism I have is the price of a pint - ouch!

Nice pub - I like the idea of different rooms - all seem to have their own theme too... Wasn't too busy in the week before Christmas - a few blokes like me in there waiting for the missus to finish shopping... Much better than the endless number of yuppy wine bars that have cropped up. Nice wholesome food, but kitchen closes at 3 sharp if you are having a late lunch (as I was).
Definitely recommended.

This is a great pub, it's newly refurbished and has a real cosy feel. It's near Call Lane, the food is lovely (try the Aberdeen Angus burger!)and they serve great beer. The atmosphere is great as you can kick back and relax or go wild playing hungry hungry hippos! I recommend this pub to anyone.

Good proper pub, which seem to be fast disappearing in cities these days. I spend most of my time in either Leeds or London and this is one of the best pubs in either.
Marvellous pub. The Beer Monster is spot on. Highly recommended for visitors to Leeds. Its a shame however that they see fit to put promotional drinks posters over some of the splendid etched glass screens.
A fantastic little pub, just far enough away from the trendy wine bars of Leeds to deliver great beer at rock bottom prices, and without the yuppies. In "Happy Hour" pay 99p for a superb pint of Tetleys. One of Leeds little treasures. Go there. Monster.
A true Victorian gem which serves as the Tetley brewery tap. Multi-roomed pub with fabulous architectural features. One of the rooms is a no-smoking room. Minimal piped music just a calm environment to enjoy theoretically the best pint of Tetley in the land. Has fallen out of favour in recent years as the epicentre of Leeds has moved a little further north. Pubs like this deserve your support - hunt it out.
