The Adelphi, Leeds

This pub does not charge for it's beer. Yes, that's right, the beer is free. Instead they operate an extortion racket where your pockets are ruthlessly gone through and emptied while at the bar. The prices in this pub are theft, pure and simple and the landlord (or whoever sets the prices) is a thief. I have just been in the Adelphi for the first and last time and I refuse to dignify their prices by describing them as simply exorbitant or daylight robbery. £3.74 for a pint of 3.9% bitter in a northern city is beyond such lame descriptions. The last person who passed through Yorkshire and was as much of a thief as whoever runs this place was riding a horse called Black Bess and was arrested and hung upon arrival at York. The same fate should befall the criminal who has just robbed me. Note that the Adelphi is directly opposite the Red Lion, a fabulous Sam Smiths pub that serves the best pint of that company's bitter that I have ever drunk and that will charge you just £1.80 for the privilege.

Palace, Leeds

Nothing exceptional and grossly expensive for a northern town boozer. Won't be visiting again. There are better places in Leeds.

Templar Hotel, Leeds

I've only started visiting Leeds recently and this is a gem of a find. Traditional, busy and friendly at the times that I have visited, but the real attraction has been the beer.

Two beers stood out to me particularly: York Brewery Terrier and Kirkstall Pale Ale. Both were sublime, to die for, gorgeous, etc. But these beers always are good. The thing was that you could just tell the care that had gone into getting these beers into the cellar and out again at the highest possible quality. I can't put my finger on how I could tell, but you just can. Sometimes beers are really, really good. Occasionally they are EXCEPTIONAL! This pub sells exceptional beer.
