Walked in, looked at beer selection, walked out. This place came recommended. Not sure why.....

Closed for refurbishment at the moment.

The Lendal Cellars, as the name implies is subterranean and was the last hostelry visited on my Eboracum odyssey. After having gotten accustomed to the gloom, I was served a pint of Roosters Yankee by a charming young lady with a winning smile.

Its an interesting pub belonging to Greene King, so alongside the aforementioned Roosters Yankee, you got the run-of-the-mill, insipid I.P.A, or Old Speckled Hen which Greene King emasculated as it was a superior product to their own Abbot Ale.

There were a couple of young mothers inside accompanied by a gaggle of mewling offspring, so I took my pint outside to sit in the sunshine, And although sunny, it was akin to sitting in a wind tunnel, as can be seen from the photograph.

Apart from the nice lass behind the bar, there is not really a great deal to recommend The Lendal Cellars, hence a rating of 4/10.

I enjoyed a pint and a half of some porter called Drop O The Black Stuff in here the other Sunday, which was delicious. The food that went with it was too. Shame about the pissed-up Geordies falling over each other in the corner (it was about 1 in the afternoon), but then that's hardly the pub's fault. (They left anyway, possibly at the urging of their embarrassed girlfriends.)

Zero atmosphere in here, on a Sunday lunchtime at any rate, but I enjoyed a quick visit anyway.

Greene King IPA was not in very good condition when we visited very busy on a Saturday afternoon no organisation at the bar very interesting vaulted cellars though

Went here for a mid afternoon bite to eat and a pint. Very pleasant surroundings (though it was rather quiet), decent food and very pleasing to see Aspalls cider on tap. Could happily spend an afternoon putting the world to rights in this place!

This pub has a few real ales but seems to lack some atmosphere

Situated virtually opposite Harkers, on the other side of the road, is the Lendal Cellars, a former Hogshead pub, but now a rare Greene King outlet in this neck of the woods.

Arriving at the front entrance of the pub, down a small slope from street level, we see an information board telling us that the pub stands on the site of an Augustinian friary traced back to the 13th Century.

Inside, the pub is much larger than expected, with a number of interconnecting rooms with low arches and much exposed brickwork, as you'd expect from what were, presumably, at one time, cellars. There's something of that chainy pub feel to it however. Outside is a large seating area around three sides of the pub.

Loudish music means that the pub is evidently trying to appeal to the younger drinker and, on my recent June early evening visit, a few reasonably well behaved hen/stag groups appeared to put down roots for a long stay.Interestingly however, it was advertising itself as a World Cup free zone.

Being a Greene King pub, the beer is not much to write home about. The IPA was not on and, for some unaccountable reason, I went for the Ruddles County - 2.65p - in preference to the guest beer from the Warwickshire Beer Co. It wasn't very good at all, but not bad enough that I could justifiably take it back. In retrospect, I can't imagine there's much real ale trade here at all.

Whilst not being a particularly bad example of that genre, this pub is probably more suited to hen/stag parties and the circuit crowd. If you don't come into that category, I'd be inclined to give this one a miss.

Went in to this one on recommendations from this site, however there is an overwhelming smell of stale food when entering. The building is interesting and its worth a poke about, but I prefered to sit near the door to get some fresher air, even though it was cold outside, then the barmaid shut the door which was a blow. The beer was average at best. There are much better pubs in York to see.

Great little bar with underground vaults, Possibly not the best in York but one of my firm favs when i visit. Has always had a friendly atmospher when i have been there, So was unhappy to read about its dog policy in one of the reviews below, As someone who lives in an area where this is not a problem i don't understand it.

Reasonable ales on offer. Not really much else to say though. Standard greene king food stuff on offer.

Nice pub. It's standard Greene King fayre, but in an unusual setting. The staff seem friendly and both the beers I tried tasted well kept.

A couple of weeks ago myself and a few other freinds booked a table at The Lendal Cellars and had a lovely time there, all the staff seemed friendly and knew a lot about the products they sold, after our meal we ended up staying most of the evening.

I was a little unsure before hand as I had heard about the fine for the standard of the kitchen so I enquired prior to booking and was informed that since the pub has been under new management in the last year they have recieved excellent kitchen hygine reports and have also been awarded food pub of the year for Greene King and with our experience there I can see why.

Went in with friends over the weekend... Great food in a quirky under ground cellar.
Not sure what the other comments about bad beer quality are about we had 3 different pints of cask beer all of which were fantastic.
We had food which was also of a high quality helped by a 2 for 10 offer. We waited a while for our food but it was well worth it.

I recently visited York with some members of my family and my dog.

We sat in the (mostly empty) outside seating area and two members of my family entered the bar to order food and drinks for four adults. While they were in the bar we were informed that we were not welcome in the outside area and made some excuse about food being served and the law and dogs.

I would like to point out that while I respect it is the landlords discretion to allow dogs in the bar, it is nothing to do with the law. Hygiene rules restrict dogs from areas food is being prepared or stored, NOT areas where it is served. In this case we were not even in the bar but outside.

If you have a dog and want to eat or drink in York go elsewhere. The Roman Bath just around the corner is dog friendly.

With 5.3million households in the UK owning a dog it is a large part of the population to banish - but thats up to the landlord and his till.

Lovely quirky place with ok selection of beer but staff a bit of a let down. the 2 on when I visited couldn't raise a smile and when asked if they gave CAMRA discount they didn't know what Camra was which is a little strange for a real ale pub to say the least. with a few changes this could be the perfect pub

Your mobile will never work in here ! Run of the mill pub with a slightly unusual ambience. Often get a sour pint if you choose something which is unpopular, as it sits for days.
MountainMan - 5 Apr 2008 22:54
HAHAHAHA ARJH - you should read up on this pub theve just been fined 11,000 for a havin an apallingly dirty kitchen never ate there never would!

Good place, good selection of beers. Nice atmosphere. Let down by high prices.

One of my favourite pubs. Always make time for this place when I'm in town.
Expat_Mat - 29 Dec 2006 09:39
Good pub. Decent selection of ales, interesting venue inside. Good long tables for mass drinking games on an all-dayer. Solid.

This pub is always in my pub crawl when I go back to York.
Pretty good beer and the foods quite good too, but a fantastic and unique building, as the name suggests, it is a converted cellar so don't try to visit if the Ouse is in flood.

A local watering hole whos pricing system is almost identical to judges lodging up the road. A pub with bags of character and an extensive beer terrace outside the main entrance. It boasts a range of cask ales as well as the usual array of beers. I always find this place to be either very busy or empty.
p.s If your tall like me watch your head in places.

A pretty good, city centre pub. As can be expected the prices can be a bit steep, but the choice is pretty good (up to 6 ales, few lagers and the usual aray of bottles) and the drinks are well kept. Likewise the food is good pub grub, and not too wildly priced. The setting is also pretty good, downstairs into the main bar, and further down to a semi-circular roofed celler, very nice.
However, in terms of limitations, it can be either very dead (as it is quite large) or really busy (especially as the bar area is quite small).
alistair_cross - 8 Jun 2005 13:04
Hidden away right in the centre, promises so much when you first walk in with its exciting i-am-in-a-tunnel vibe. then turns out to be nothing more than a standard chain pub.

also the further inside you progress the worse it smells. also unfortunately suffers from meathead personality free door staff who begin rudely herding you to the door on the stroke of 11. perhaps they were just trying to save me from the smell.
iainyork - 15 Feb 2005 00:49
Used to do fantastic food, but now just regular fodder. Still worth a visit though, it's an interesting pub.

An absolutly awesome pub, the experience will is a good one for young or old. All the staff are friendly and polite. A great meeting place to start off a great night.

went to this place, found it to be different from others and quite enjoyed being there.

If there was a prize for 'most improved pub of the year' then the 'Cellars would probably win it.

The pub itself is indeed built in old cellars, but with some outside seating. Used to be a place to avoid, but has rallied magnificently with a good selection of handpulls (6 in all, including Wadworth's 6X, Everard's Tiger and Adnams Bitter) and Hoegaarden on tap. A bit on the pricey side, but no more so than any of the other pubs in the city centre. Has a pool table (with red baize, no less) and a quiz machine if that's what floats your boat.

Gets ludicrously busy at weekends, but definitely worth a look during the quieter moments.
