Fleet Inn, Twyningback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Can only assume that the place has had a revamp recently. We had Sunday Lunch and found service, beer and food quality excellent. Lovely location. Great experience.

Visited the wonderful place twice on Saturday. They have not had a great deal of good luck recently, having only just reopened after a fire wrecked part of the pub and they deserve a change of fortune. A large pub on the River Avon with seperate accommodation, a mooring for passing boats, a very large garden with a childrens play area and yes, The mini golf is still there! It is a super place to spend an afternoon. Good choice of Beers, Lagers, Wine and bottled offerings, but mostly run if the mill stuff rather than a beer tickers paradise. In the evening we returned for a meal in the restaurant which to be fair, takes up the majority on the floorspace. The laminated menus look a bit cheap, but we placed our order and when the food arrived, it was truly excellent, wonderful flavoursome Rib Eye Steak, huge onion rings and hot chips that stayed hot. It really was top top quality food and if they can keep up these standards it deserves to be a real destination venue. All the staff were helpful, considerate and numerous. I hope they go from strenth to strenth and the people of the area discover what a wonderful place the have near them.

Nipped in week before last, for couple of pints and a bag of crisps, the Westons SP was good. Crisps not so good, oxidized, oo-er.!! Any chance? No probs, change my crisps for a fresh pack, thanks girls, no drama just good service.

Before the floods had so much going for it - visited The Fleet in early last year hated it. However, popped in last week, pleased to see bit of a revival is taking shape. Pub is very clean, redecorated, bar kept tidy, staff willing and pleased to serve, and not too poncey. Outside, very tidy, overflow parking sorted, got rid of that mini-golf.
Is painting over the oak beams a sacrilegious heresy one for Kevin McCloud perhaps.
As nominated driver, didnt get much chance to sample the gear, fair range of ales, some Westons & Thatchers, food looks nice, few veggie items for her indoors, let you know, try it out next week.
Critical report next month. Bout time this old ladies fortunes were revived.

I grew up across the river from the Fleet, it used to be a fantastic pub, packed on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, the food was good as was the beer. The ferry across the river made a trip to the Fleet even more entertaining (plus drunken staggering back through fields of cows). About 10 or so years ago they spent a fair bit of money on the place and spent it on the wrong things (colonades and crazy golf in a village pub anyone?). This pub has the potential to be amazing, excellent location, the ferry, a flat pleasant 2 mile walk from Tewkesbury, the list goes on. Unfortunately the floods of 2007 seem to have killed it.
I went last night for the first time in 5+ years and left feeling depressed that such a mighty pub had fallen so far. The bar, which on a Sunday would've been packed with regulars and visitors was empty bar a slovenly looking youth in a vest eating chips (who seemed to work there) and a rather unpleasant barmaid. The choice of ale is limited to 'Bitter' advertised with a piece of card attached to the pump, no idea what it actually was (it wasn't too bad to be fair) with a number of empty pumps. The inside was grubby and all the furniture in the beer garden had seen better days. The moorings haven't been renewed since the floods thereby stopping any passing nautical custom. We stayed for one drink and left, feeling sad that someone could allow a pub which could make an absolute fortune in one of the best locations in the country to deteriorate so dramatically.
On the plus side we then went to the Village Inn, where the landlord and locals were friendly and welcoming and they had Doom Bar and Wickwar BOB on tap which made me feel slightly better.

Came across this pub and was impressed with its riverside location, but the place looked so filthy on the inside and outside that we didn't dare stay to eat or drink there.
Just as well given the apalling reviews on this site. Sounds like we had a lucky escape!

I live a 5 minute walk from this pub in a lovely village called Twyning with the beautiful river Avon flowing through. The scenery is lovely and the place magic IMO... BUT this pub is the WORST, MOST AWFUL, ROTTEN, FOUL, DISGUSTING place on planet earth I kid you not, dont stay here, dont drink here, and certainly do not eat here..... See the river take a drink from the shop and then go to the other pub in the village the village inn. When I think about it more I lose my words, the pub could be fantastic, but it could well be the worst pub EVER, well done landlord!

THE WORST PLACE TO STAY, EAT OR DRINK IN BRITAIN.. Arrived on a Sunday evening after driving down from Scotland. Had booked over the phone so we could brak our journey from Scotland to Cornwall. If we had been earlier we would have left immediately to try and fine somewhere else. Filthy bedroom, the dirtiest carpet and shower I have ever seen. Dining areas and bar area complete with cobwebs, sticky bar and even sticky carpets. Sat outside in the riverside beer garden. Brilliant location and the website pics didn't show how shabby the place is. There were a few people, all tourists, dining outside that evening, none inside. Even outside we could here the " so called " chef having tantrums, smashing crockery and thrown pots and pans. We or none of the people dining paid for our food as it was disgusting. Must be hard to burn batter while the fish inside is still half raw. It seemed standard procedure to offer everyone who complained free drinks. We had two bottles of free wine and never ate or paid for any food. That is except breakfast which we abandoned due to being unable to get ionto the main hotel building in the morning. The 3 bedrooms are in a separate converted boathouse which has no access to the locked main building. No loss, they can keep the breakfast we paid for. All in all this has just got to be the worst SH1TH0LE in Britain and I'm not kidding. I warrants being closed down by the Dept of Environmental Health or Trading Standards. Managed by morons and staffed by could care less staff who were used to being on the receiving end of complaints on a daily basis. I voted a Zero cuase I cant vote any less. Really annoying was that in the morning we went to Tewkesbury for breakfast and it was full of really nice hotels. The Fleet looks great on the website, but, trust me it really is disgusting.

Having previously stopped over for a drink and being very impressed with the location by the river I decided subsequently to book 2 rooms for four of us for a two night stay. After playing a round of golf we arrived at around 5pm to be asked by the bar maid, " had we not received a phone call". On indicating no call had been received she went to say the boiler wasnt working and there was no hot water. It was a hot day and we were very sweaty and in need of a shower, so no hot water was out of the question. I asked to see someone in charge and was told the man in charge had gone to the doctors and she was on her own. Although she was distressed that no one had bothered to contact us she was only the paid barmaid. Eventually the man in charge returned but would not talk to us in person and sent a message via the the barmaid to offer 25% discount. The barmaid gave us a name of a bed and breakfast which we went to and promptly booked and had an excellent stay. It was very evident that, apart from the barmaid, nobody could care less about the position we were in and I think we were lucky to end up as well as we did. Having read other people experiences who actually stayed there it seams to me although we suffered initial inconvenience we had a lucky escape.

Worst pub I have ever had misfortune of eating at. Rude, cocky barman should have set alarm bells ringing. Drinks were in grubby glasses. We ordered and finally received our food after a 55 minute wait. Bangers and mash was not bad, but i was so irate following the long wait it was not to be enjoyed. The people who ordered before us didnt even receive their meals... When it came to paying, the bloke I assumed was running the place offered a feeble apology but said the 2 blokes in the kitchen were working their bo***cks off. Well, I dont care to be told how hard the chefs are working when I am paying good money. He also blamed the bank holiday for the rush! Now call me picky, but surely the bank holiday was quite clearly marked on the calendar and therefore predictable! It wasnt even nice weather so there were definitely fewer customers than there could have been. Tip: AVOID!

Me and my husband from Austrailia were on a twelve month visit to Britain, sailing various rivers. We came across the Fleet Inn when voyaging along the River Avon. It seemed like a glorious country retreat and that continued when we entered and were welcomed by a lovely log fire and ancient beamed ceilings. We had never seen anything like it, coming from Down Under!.
But however, our first impressions were soon abolished. We were welcomed by an unfriendly, unprofessional member of staff and we were then given the wrong meals and the wine we ordered did not arrive for 35 minutes! The member also looked like he was "sucking a lemon" which didn't leave a good impression. However, on the other hand, there were two delightful members of staff by the names of Matt and Sianie, if I remember so. These two were helpful and extremely friendly and were even still studying secondary school and put the so called "professional, full time" staff to shame! We are planning to visit again in a few years time and it is unlikely that we will be visiting the Fleet Inn again.

We only wish that we had read the review by 'another-puffin' before 10 of us stayed at The Fleet Inn this weekend (29th Nov 2008). Our experience is pretty much identical, possibly worse. VERY, VERY poor accommodation; in fact the worst we have ever experienced in the UK. Dirty, damp. smelly and cold - but at least the bed linen was clean and the view of the River Avon was nice... 'Converted Boat House' was so grim that bar and restaurant were never visited. DO NOT BE TEMPTED BY THE CHARMING WEBSITE! A concrete box on the edge of the M5/M50 would prove vastly superior.

I recently stayed here for 2 nights - Nov 2008 When I arrived the booking in was good. They took me over to the room - The Avon, a double room for single occupancy in a converted boathouse. It sounded idyllic. However the entry corridor had a very musty smell but the room smelt OK, probably because all the windows were open and it was freezing cold. They closed the window and turned on the heater. I had a reasonably quick (good) meal in the pub and then went out. When I returned at 11:15 pm, the place was in darkness - pub closed. Breakfast (juice, milk, cornflakes and croissant) on a tray in the room. They advertise cooked breakfast at an extra cost but I wasn't offered this at all. I investigated the room and bathroom: * no shower curtain * bathroom floor that moved when you walked on it * no cup and saucer for a hot drink * a dirty bottle of ketchup on the floor by the mini-fridge * a dirty carpet that needed a good vacuuming * the wastebin hadn't been emptied since the previous occupant * a live earwig in the bed I managed the first overnight stay but without a hot drink at breakfast. I then went out for the day before anyone was around, returning again at 10pm. Then I discovered: * breakfast tray on the dusty floor outside the room with the milk container and glass of juice uncovered * rain spots on the breakfast tray * the room hadn't been entered since I left it * bed unmade * previous breakfast tray still in the room Luckily the bar was still open so I went to complain. Immediately they only charged me for one night's stay plus the meal. No questions asked, I felt as if they weren't surprised. I was told to leave the key in the room when checking out - obviously 10am is too early for them to be around. I just want to try and prevent other people having such a bad experience.

Enormous riverside eating house, where in Summer boats may disgorge large amounts of day trippers. Competitively-priced and interesting menu with reasonable veggie choice (not so much as there used to be, but you can get nut roast on a Sunday). Although they claim real ales there was only one (St.Austell Tribute) on this occasion it was a nice pint, but expensive.
