Oh dear, what have you done to this pub? Ripped out all the cosy little partitions and made it one huge cream space as echoing as a diner without the charm. There is a bigger beer choice it is true but that doesn't make up for the loss of its old cosiness.

Back here for the first time in years, and it's been ten years since I was a regular here. Even so the restaurant manager remembered me. I had Fullers Pride, which you do in this area; this is Fullers country. Had some Thai food which was more than palatable. Latymers keeps going on the office-worker trade I suppose, and hasn't changed that much in the intervening decade; the huge ceiling mirror left over from its life as an American-style bar, all cream sofas and red motifs on the wall, is still there, easier to leave it in situ I expect. Its past as the Red Cow is long behind it but never quite forgotten.

NIGHTMARE!
Go in for food at 10 minutes to 3pm, to be told they have stopped, when pointing out the sign that says they served food until 3pm, they reluctantly said they would take our order. Great when you have to talk people into taking your money!
My friend wanted an omelet, we we told they fryers were off, so she couldn't have it. Apparently she took to long to choose something else, by which time it was 5 to 3pm, and we were told no food!
We will never ever go back here, shocking service from the food side of the business... not sure how they have any customers

Perfectly serviceable Friday night pub with very friendly service (unlike a new venue visited last week for the first time)
Only minor complaint was that for a Fullers pub there wasn't a huge selection - Pride and ESB from memory and suspect there was Honeydew as well. Still, the Pride was far from the worst one I'll ever have.
Oh, and why do pubs have television going when there's nothing really to watch on? There's only so much Sky Sports News one person can watch without turning slightly zombie-like.
|
Love this pub! I work around the corner and regularly pop in. Cheeky pint in the afternoon to the cricket, thai lunch, after work drinks, all sorted. I even travel in on the weekends for the footie now and again. Fairly quiet, under-rated pub.
|
Looks like the management has changed at Latymers. New manager is very friendly and welcoming and clearly cares about quality. Have seen some interesting nights and ideas starting.
Great thai restaurant at the back and good selection of well cared for beers. I thought the prices were good for the area and I would definitely recommend this place, either for an event, or to start the night with quality thai food (the place that invented 'tiger sauce' apparantly!), before settling in to beers without even needing to move from your seat!

Interesting pub. It's another Fuller's offering and they tend to be good. It's got one main pub room then another room for the restaurant which other posters have mentioned.
There are plasmas for football etc, they can show different channels on them but only have sound for one obviously.
Onto the important points, the drink is good, and not that expensive for the area, but also not cheap. The drinkers seemed to be a mix of locals and office workers.
The pub's nothing out of this world but it's not bad and good for sport.
|
Maybe the Manager has been advised to watch people with a drink problem.
|
The manager is 'suspicious'

This is a reasonably small pub with a Thai restaurant through the back. It is quite nice and has televisions for sport should you wish to view any. I find the seating a bit awkward for some reason, that is if you are not able to get one of the tables at the side and are left in the middle, but that's probably just me. It's open until midnight from Thursday to Saturday which is a bonus.

Cheapest London Pride (currently 3.00) in the area and the Pride is always in a perfect nick.
|
Went in for a quick one with a few colleagues after work, and my eye was caught be a well-presented display of Fullers bottled beers. Although I prefer the draught version (where it can be found), the London Porter went down well. Otherwise no real change from my previous review.
|
From the outside it has always looked a bit odd as it is a new build. The Pub was clean and friendly. It was very busy with two Sky sports screens showing the live Cricket and the latest sports news- my heaven but not everyone's. Big circular mirror on the ceiling quite a feature Locals at the bar and tourists sitting both sides of us. Family came in the pub and went to the Restaurant section at back of pub. My daughters ate the Thai food and declared it great. I drank a very nice pint of Pride and was very tempted by the bottled Fullers beers on offer.
|
Yes, I remember the Red Cow (this was when Fullers also ran the nearby Clarendon and the Nashville at West Kensington) - all 3 were "pub rock" venues! I always enjoy the beers and the Thai food so this pub suits me fine!
|
Fairly simple inside, lots of tv's playing sport and fruit machines which was annoying. However they do have Fuller's ales on tap and also a great, cheap and athuentic Thai restaurant.
|
For those of you who don't know this pub used to be the Red Cow. Locals closed it down in the late seventies. Re-opened as Latymers much later.
Pub is clean & pleasant, beer is fine, as is the food. But the Red Cow is so sadly missed. First pint of Fullers I ever had.
|
Crowded and busy with people spiling out onto the pavement, Fuller's beer selling so fast it's no surprise it's fresh. Thai food very good also. People from the nearby (now gated) St Paul's Court have probably finally found it.
|
For an early Thursday evening, the place was busy but not packed and the Thai food looked and smelt tempting. The Discovery was also much better than on my last visit (see below), hence the new review and corresponding improvement in my rating.
|
Fuller's house in the base of a rather soulless 60s block. Was packed on the Sunday lunchtime I visited and the Thai food smelt good. Some big family-type parties in evidence, so it obviously commands a local following.
|
Visited today and enjoyed a couple of excellent pints of London Pride and a delicious Thai lunch. Sorry to hear that Ken the landlord is moving on at the end of March though. All the best Ken!
|
So packed on Friday that we did not venture in - went back today (Christmas Eve) and the place was virtually deserted (I suppose that the local offices were mostly closed). Rather indifferent pint of Discovery, but the London Pride was OK. Nothing special.
|
Visited on Sat 18/11/06. I had a superb couple of Thai courses, washed down with a pint of London Pride which was very well kept indeed. Although not be any means my favourite pint, the Fullers was nevertheless fully enjoyable.
I appreciated the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff at Latymers; on Saturday evening there was a combined 21st and 50th birthday party, with most of the pub reserved for it. They still made an effort to find me a table at which to have my pint and meal, and I was made to feel welcome.
This is quite honestly a very pleasant pub.

Awful place. Real ale pub destroyed by soulless decor, indifferent staff and equally indifferently kept beer. Comment by anonymous 14 Apr 2005 doesn't surprise me.
|
I love this pub. I've only ever had positive experiences with the the staff here...they don't all scream last orders at you but come round and ask you if you'd like another drink before they close the bar. Was busy over the world cup and the atmosphere was good so obvously there's plently of people who agree with me.
Attracts the after work crowd, quieter in the evenings though. I feel comfortable going in alone sitting on the sofa to read a book and have a glass of wine which I reckon says a lot for the feel of the place. (Also slightly negative or positive depending what you're after-they do sometimes rent the place out, I went for a Sunday lunch a few weeks ago to find it was shut for a private function.)
Thai food is good if you like thai, it's not my favourite but still enjoyed it. They also do takeaway.
Best of all....it's staggering distance from my front door-horray! :)

Further to JPP's comments about 'The Sweeney' production crew being based across the road at Colet Court, the opening credits to 'The Sweeney' were actually filmed in Colet Gardens which is next door to Latymers. I was very surprised to read anonymous's comments about her experience at Latymers. My colleagues and I have visited on many an occasion (!) and always enjoyed great food, beer and service. PS All the best Ken - mine's a Stella !

Good Thai Food, great atmoshpere on a Friday night, club manager Ken is a nice bloke.

With regard to the last comment I can only say that I was a regular at Latymer's from its opening as the Red Cow in 1989 until I moved away from the area earlier this year, and I never found the staff to be rude, nor did I see any trouble there.
|
I work down the road from this pub and had always heard that the food is divine. My colleagues and I were very excited when we finally managed to get away for some lunch there.
We were comfortably seated, had ordered our food and were enjoying our wine when a large table settled behind us. One plate of food had already arrived when the Bar Manager asked us to move to another table so that this large table could be more comfortably seated. By the time we were moved into the restaurant our three plates of food had arrived and we had to struggle to another table with hot food. I commented to the bar manager that I thought this was all carried out in a highly unprofessional manner. I worked in hospitality for many years and would never dream of doing this to a customer.
He then proceeded to argue with me. I replied that I wasn't having a conversation and that my opinion was merely that his behaviour was highly unprofessional.
The large table for whom we had been moved, who had been very happy where they were, had only drinks and had left by the time we finished our food.
The waiter who removed our plates commented that he had never seen poeple being kicked INTO the restaurant before!
My colleagues and I finished our meal, had another glass of wine and then made to leave.
The bar manager then followed us outside the pub and told me that he had never been so insulted in his life. (My colleagues and I had thought he was coming to apologise!) I do not believe that I was insulting; I was merely expressing an opinion - that his behaviour was unprofessional. He then proceeded to tell me that had I been a man he would have hit me! My colleagues and I were shocked. He then barred me....
I find it interesting that he would bar me outside the pub where none of his staff would be aware of this!
Needless to say I immediately got onto Fullers and laid out the details as I have here.
They responded quickly enough but denied all I had written - effectively telling me that I was lying. What would I gain by lying when I had two colleagues with me.
I would not waste time or money on this place again and am disgusted that a company like Fullers would condone such behaviour and did not even have the decency to apologise.
Needless to say I am informing as many people as possible of this occurence so that they know not to waste their money at Latymer's.

This is probably also the same pub where AC/DC did their first ever UK show back in '75 or so.

Dave and others, it would have been the very same place. Closed as a music venue in the late 1970s and then demolished 1981 or '82, a new 'Cow' opened in 1988, renamed in 1989.
chrisa - 18 Nov 2003 16:59 |
Thanks JPP. Would this be the same'Red Cow' that was a live music venue ? For example Squeeze played a 'Red Cow' in Hammersmith in MARCH 1977 ; 2 GREENWICH - THE BELL 5 ST. ALBANS - CIVIC HALL 6 THE NASHVILLE 17 HAMMERSMITH - THE RED COW
|
Used to have much more character before 1989 when it was The Red Cow. This was the crew of "The Sweeney's local when they filmed from 1975-78. It features in quite a few episodes. Their production base was just across the road at Colet Court.

Friendly Service. Tasty Thai Food (Chicken Number 5 is excellent). Nice pint of Stella. Only two minutes from work. Heaven.
|
This place is growing on me very slowly (like moss). Very good food, as Julia says, and the bar area is comfortable with ok beer even if it's a bit soulless. It's now open for Sunday lunches which could be worth checking out.

Very unusual - the front half is a pub, the back half is a Thai cafe. I can't tell you anything about the pub, but the food is fantastic so it's well worth a visit.
