user reviews of the Galleon Inn, Fowey

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The best pub in Fowey and the only one not tied to the Cornish mafia.

Bright and airy inside and of course a cracking estuary view.

We visited on a November weekday so the place was nearly all ours it would be manic in the summer I imagine.

8/10

I agree with Steamer, Sharps are not not the greatest beers.
Again three on this visit, Atlantic, Coaster and Doom. Skinners Lushingtons and a very nice Fowl Play from Cotleigh.

Excellent food and Skinners ale. Lots of Sharps beers which don't interest me but the Skinners was excellent. Lovely spot overlooking the estuary. Look to previous comment for how to find it or go to the riverside and turn left and enter through the "back door".

Doesn't look the most inviting place from the street.
Enter pub down a passageway.
Smell of cooked food from the kitchen taints the air.
Seating is a bit on top of each other.

Having said that, you will find, at last, a different choice of beer than in most Cornish pubs.
Vale of Glamorgan's Scorchio, Bay's Devon Dumpling, Cornish Coaster and of course the ubiquitous Doom Bar. All roughly £3 a pint.
Good priced grub at £6.
Worth a try.

Large bar which goes through from Fore Street to the harbourside with excellent views across the estuary. It obviously gets very busy in high season but probably has enough room to cater for all!. The light furniture and the many windows made it feel quite light and airy even though you walk down a passageway to get in from the shopping street. Quiet when we were there but still had a reasonable selection of ales on draught - Sharp's Cornish Coaster and Doom Bar as well as Bird's Skull Duggery and another dark ale which I've forgotten the name of. Anyway the quality was fine and the service prompt and efficient. Prices were very good considering that this is a tourist destination.

Excellent pub in a great location on the river. Good reasonably priced food, live music most Friday nights and the best selection of ale in the town at only £3 a pint, which for Fowey felt like a bargain.

Would really recommend. Great steak, plenty of chips and onion rings, and some really nice beers well kept. Will come back if i'm passing!

Slightly unusual layout (down an alleyway, huge conservatory, etc) but nice views make up for it!

Would recommend anyone in Fowey that wants to eat to come here. Excellent location, roomy, excellent service, great food, good prices and the best pint of Doombar I had all week. Came here on holiday last time around 5 years and had a similar experience.

Some pubs are effortless at getting it right. It makes you wonder why so many get it so badly wrong.

Great location on the estuary with good outside seating.Agree with the comments about the decor at first inspection but good choice of beers, including Skinners Green Hop,when we visited and surprisingly good and excellent value food.Sharps Cornish Coaster also a decent pint and refreshing change from Doom bar.
Seems a good community pub too judging by the number of people in on a charity bingo night.

400+ years od and decked out like pub nouveau crossed with someone's conservatory. The outside seating overlooks the harbour and over to Polruan, but it loses the sun come the afternoon. Had a decent pint of Betty Stoggs Big Sister in here, but the decor left me cold.

My first visit in sometime and not disappointed. Several beers on offer along with Cornish Rattler cider and although we had eaten the food looked superb and well worth trying. The patio outside overlooks the Estuary which is always good viewing. The only freehouse in Fowey, it is well worth visiting

Good sized pub with a great terrace over-looking the estuary. I imagine this gets pretty packed and quite difficult to actually get a seat along the water's edge. Not much to look at from the street side (just an alleyway in fact) but worth making the effort to investigate further.
There was an Irish singer on a recent Saturday night visit who wasn't really to my taste but a few people were getting in to the singalong spirit.
It's nice to find a pub that not woned by St. Austell's in these parts. There were five beers on tap (three from Sharps) plus Blackthorn, Cornish Rattler and Scrumpy Jack ciders.

No Skinners here so had Sharps Doom instead. Nice drop. Food standard pub fayre

My 2004 edition of the good beer guide recommended this one, so I gave it a lash despite the unappealing exterior.

We had coffees (it was 10am afterall) which were cups of brown milk.

The guide states that this place is 400 years old, but there's no evidence of that now - it looks like it's been refurbished and it's now devoid of any charm or character. Awful. Really need to buy the new guide.

We wandered about Fowey trying to find a pub that wasn't St Austell's brewery owned. Doesn't look much from the outside but is attractive inside with some ales available. Well appointed position.

A good pub that all of my small group seemed to appreciate. Four hand pumps with Sharps Cornish Coaster, Doombar ,Banks Original and possibly Courage Best. This was possibly the most reasonably priced pub of the week. I believe the Cornish Coaster was priced at 2.20 a pint. Everyone in our small group were happy with the rear outside tables facing the water, especially the smokers.

Not really my type of place but served a cracking pint of Sharp's Doom Bar which I drank sitting outside overlooking the river.

The pub is part of a small local group called Ladybird Inns.

An average pub with a big bar area and lots of seating and therefore lots of families. Both the food and beer are good. The best bit is the small outside area adjacent to the quay side where you can watch the boats come and go. If you can't get a seat, ask for plastic glasses and stand out in the square.
