It was too busy for me to note down all of the ales on sale last Saturday (and too far into our pub crawl) but I remember choosing one of the Pilot Brewery's beers (possibly the Gold) rather than the "served flat unless otherwise requested" Bass and thinking it was better than the equivalent I had drunk a couple of hours earlier in the Gower Brewery taproom on Newton Road. My overriding memory, sadly, is of a group of retired elderly gentlemen sitting opposite us, one of whom badly needed an immediate change of trousers (shame his friends couldn't have looked after him better)....

It's still sat there, in that groove, as well described hereinbefore, and is absolutely fine for that.

We made the trip out to the Mumbles to try Wales CAMRA's pub of the year. It's a good pub. But I'm not convinced that it's the best pub in Wales - I could name at least 10 that I think are better. Even locally, the Railway Inn at Upper Killay takes some beating. Nevertheless, it has a good range of ales - Pilot Wrecker, Gold & Black Storm, Tiny Rebel Beat Box, Sharps Doom Bar & Rudgate Ostara. There are no real ciders. But they do have a good selection of Welsh and Somerset ciders in bottles. Has a nice location on the seafront. We continued by having a stroll in the sun to the Mumbles Rugby Club (not listed on here). Two poor Tomos Watkins ales later and we'd wished we'd stayed in the Pilot!

I went to the Pilot having been recommended as it is a CAMRA award winning pub with it's own brewery on-site. The staff were friendly and offered useful advice on the range of beers available.
The pub is situated in a great location on the front at The Mumbles overlooking Swansea Bay. It seemed very popular with locals and visitors alike, as the small premises were crowded with Saturday night drinkers.
The range of real ales is excellent and includes guest beers as well as those actually brewed in the pub. Pilot Gold was a delicious pint!
Thoroughly recommended and will certainly visit again when in that area.

Strange comment by Mumbles 1 below I thought, if he likes it so much up the Park Inn, and Mumbles Ale House, why doesn't he just stay up there and drink in those Pubs, rather than complain about Richard at the Pilot, whom I've always found very hospitable........
|
Called in here recently for the first time in a while, and what a lovely Pub all round nowdays, excellent service, great beer selection, pleasant atmosphere. Great to see this Pub open again and doing so well........
|
Undoubtedly a good pub, undoubtedly decent beer, just wish the owner would wear a smile every once in a while and remember that people will eventually stop going (as I have) if he isn't a touch more hospitable. You get a much warmer welcome at The Park Inn. I haven't tried the Mumbles Ale House yet, but the competition is coming and Richard would do well to remember that.

Lovely pub with Welsh slate floors, several well kept local beers and peaceful atmosphere. I could have happily spent hours relaxing over a fine Gower ale in this charming establishment. A refreshing change from the London gak pubs I've been finding myself in.

A guy in the Dragon hotel in Swansea in which we were staying recommended The Pilot, and can I can honestly say I wasn't disappointed. The Pub houses a micro brewery in the back brewing beers under the "Mumbles Brewery" label. I sampled Mumbles Mile 3.8%, Mumbles Gold 4.3% & Lifesaver 5.1% whilst my wife tried and enjoyed Oystermouth Stout... It was pretty quiet at 4pm on a Wed afternoon, but friendly and seemed to encourage both locals and the tourists on the "Mumbles pier stroll". Give it a go...

Tried this place for the first time last Tuesday. Right, it is great to find it has re-opened and now houses a micro-brewery. Pity, the Mumbles Mile went off at opening time (don't they check before they open ?) so had the Mumbles Gold instead, perfectly acceptable. Very good place, and certainly the one to head for on the sea-front. Just lacked a little atmosphere to my mind, but I expect that will come. Recommended.

Paid several visits to this fine brewpub whilst enjoying a weekend's walking on the Gower coast. This is a friendly local pub that was serving seven ales on each of my three visits. Three were the standard ales from the Pilot's own brewery, Mumbles Mile beings particularly impressive. Bass is also a standard here win guests being Doombar, Gower Power ( another fine local offering) and Thornbridge Jaipur. However, the best beer of all was Pilot's Dark Ale, Lug Juice. A must visit along with the Park Inn when in Mumbles.

Friendly pub with a very impressive range of Gower beers.

Have to say I was dead impressed with this place. We popped in around 6pm on a wet Monday night and the place was surprisingly busy and full of friendly local characters. The Pilot has a good spot on the sea front to watch the world go buy if you are lucky enough to get a seat by the window. Nice selection of well kept ales and the missus was pretty happy with the selection of bottled ciders...

Great to hear this Pub has re-opened, and I saw a fantastic article in the local " Evening Post " newspaper recently, which hopefully will be a boost for their trade here. The pictures on this site now make it look VERY nice indeed too, might be worth a visit over the Bank Holiday, methinks.......
Good Luck to Richard and Jo........

Great to see The Pilot open again with people running it that are truly dedicated to the job. Fantastic service, very clean and a great range of real ales that are kept meticulously.
|
Great to see this characterful pub reopen, the large windows contribute to a bright welcoming atmosphere. A wide range of top beers is always available with a regular input of guest ales not to mention a comprehensive list of best ciders. I am looking forward to sampling the Pilot's own, brewed on the premises, beers due to appear soon.

The Pilot has reopened!! Local couple Jo and Richard have bought the freehold and have reopened the pub as a traditional pub concentrating on real ales! They are going to start brewing their own beer in the next couple of months so it will be well worth a visit. Jo loves her cider so there is a good selection of bottled ciders available too!! Dogs are welcome and the pub has a warm welcoming atmosphere :-)

Been closed for a while now, with no sign of it re-opening either, big " For Sale " outside nowdays too. Another Pub in the centre of Mumbles bites the dust by the look of it, which is a shame all round.......
|
visited the pilot during our holiday in Wales in October 2011. very welcoming to us and our dog. Had a nice pint and a very good value meal which was very tasty. The Pilot is ideally situated by the Mumbles seafront and has a car park near by. loved it so much, we considerd applying for the tenancy!!
|
I think it may have joined the list of closed pubs. It's pictured on a property website with closed up windows. Sigh.

We got a really warm welcome from the staff and the regulars.....even despite a few friendly digs about England's football team! We went several times and will visit again some time. It is unpretentious and quite plain - but that is often a good thing.
Great view from the front.
We liked it.

Sorry in my last post i was compairing it from when i visited when a young chap had it, The service i recieved then was fantastic, The young chap even went out of his way to make my wife a cup of coffee which they didnt normally do....
|
Well all i can say is that i didn't like this place at all, The quality of the beer was poor, The feeling was overall unwelcoming from when i visited the pub last year when i young chap had it. I shall have to visit again and see if my feelings change.
|
Nice and clean, very friendly. Had Sly Fox on draught, very nice pint. Bit quiet, but it was early evening when I visited, so hopefully got busier later.
|
10 September 2008 called in the Pilot today for lunch . Fantastic value - couldnt quite believe it but true. Two meals - (I chose cod peas and chips and my wife had scampi peas and chips )- plus free bottle of wine - under 13!! Felt slightly guilty when we finished the main meal and crossed over the road to Verdis for the afters. Would certainly recommend the Pilot.
|
Sometimes open, sometimes not....seems like a lot of Mumbles Pubs are suffering the same fate at the moment.....Which is a crying shame actually......
|
The Pilot Is Reopened!!! We visited the "The Pilot" on July 29th, 2007 while attempting to drink "The Mumbles Mile." The new proprietor is a terrific hostess and we found her pub to be very inviting with a really fun crowd. All of her ales and bitters were top notch. If ever in Swansea go the extra mile and visit "The Pilot" along The Mumbles Mile! lechyd Da! - Dean Williams

Another famous Pub in Mumbles that has been boarded up for a while now, big development going on around it at the moment, perhaps it will re-open one Day......
